Video of Mark Titus interview sports

thelantern Titus faces life without trillions Buckeye basketball’s merry prankster might be at his career’s end after shoulder injury ZACK MEISEL Sports editor meisel.14@osu.edu It’s rare for an athlete to brush off a potentially career-ending injury as if it’s nothing. But after learning that a tear in his shoulder could cut his ÿnal season short, Mark Titus wasn’t the one who was distressed. “My mom’s actually more disappointed than I am,” said Titus, a sarcastic senior on the Ohio State men’s basketball team. “When the doctors told her I was done, she started crying and she started talking about me playing basketball like it was me walking or something. She was like, ‘So wait, he’s never going to play basketball again?’ like the shocking revelation or whatever. She’s taking it much harder than I am, so it makes it easier on me I guess. She can take all the pain.” Titus ÿrst injured his shoulder during practice earlier in the season. When reaching in to swipe a pass intended for Dallas Lauderdale, Titus’ shoulder became tangled with the 6-foot-8-inch center. He eventually lost feeling in his shoulder, he said. Still, being the relentless warrior he says he is, Titus fought through the intolerable pain, delaying surgery so he could help his team on the court. However, the blogging benchwarmer received further damage to the shoulder when hustling for a loose ball in OSU’s win over the Wildcats.

“Against Northwestern, in the one minute that I played, I went to reach for a loose ball and someone grabbed my arm again and pulled it out of the socket and it popped back in,” Titus said. “So, we took a look at it and it’s pretty bad.” Best known for his off-the-court gimmicks and his blog, clubtrillion.com, which has attracted more than 2 million visitors, Titus seems more sardonic than ever now that his ÿnal season at OSU has been derailed by injury. Although, “derailed” isn’t exactly how Titus describes it. “It’s kind of cool. We usually lift before practice and I MARK TITUS don’t have to show up for the lift, so I can sleep in for an extra half hour or 45 minutes,” Titus said. “I can kind of do whatever I want during practice. If I just want to go downstairs and look at my phone for a little bit and come back up, I can.” Titus started Club Trillion and the “Trillion Man March” as a way to applaud the limited statistics that he and fellow senior walk-on Danny Peters amass in their brief playing time. A “trillion” is derived from the statistical showing in a box score when a player plays one minute, but accumulates no other statistics: zero points, rebounds, assists, shot attempts, free throws, steals, turnovers or blocks.

KEVIN SANCHEZ Lantern reporter sanchez.825@osu.edu The picturesque landscape is transforming into icy frustration as the snow continues to fall in Columbus. Slick roads have been a problem for many students both on foot and in vehicles. An accident Wednesday on State Route 315 northbound left the passenger-side door and front headline smashed on Ohio State fourth-year Emily Metz’s car. When Metz tried to apply her brakes in the center lane, her car slid through several lanes before it was hit by a Chevrolet truck. Both cars ended up in the snow on the side of the freeway. “They had to call a tow truck to pull me out of the snow because my car

was stuck,” Metz said. “If the roads weren’t so slippery, this could have been avoided.” The vehicle, though still drivable, has sustained considerable damage from the accident. Metz was driving below the speed limit when the accident occurred. Despite recent school closings in the surrounding areas, the OSU Columbus campus will remain open for all classes and events today. “Everything has continued as scheduled,” said Bob Armstrong, director of Emergency Management. The only exceptions have been a number of athletic team practices that were canceled because of the weather. As the whitewash continues to blanket the university grounds, winds could reach gusts of up to 40 mph. Armstrong said that Emergency Management is prepared for the potentially high winds and will monitor them closely. The employees of the Facilities Operations and Development department have

Columbus’ own idol got silenced this week. Bosa Mora, 22, of Columbus, was ousted from “American Idol” on the episode that aired Tuesday night. Though he had beaten out thousands of others in the singing competition following his Boston audition, his Hollywood round audition didn’t earn him a place in the top 25. The contestants were called on stage in groups to sing individually. Mora tried to meet the judges’ expectations with his vocal skills, but even with the aid of his keyboard it wasn’t enough. Instead, the judges decided he couldn’t move further in the

BOSA MORA competition, sending him back to the Buckeye state. Judge Randy Jackson joked that people would be able to see Mora performing at a Holiday Inn in Columbus “off Route 52.” In a previous interview with The Lantern, Mora had said he simply wanted to learn from his experience on the show. Following his Hollywood

performance, he said he was grateful for the opportunity to compete. “I believe I did well,” Mora said. “I’m looking forward to continuing my path as an artist and getting my music out to the people.” Though he didn’t make it big, some local fans were sure to keep track of him during Tuesday night’s show. “I wouldn’t say I was rooting for him any more than the other contestants,” said Andrea Lodico, a fourthyear in radiologic technology, “but I did want him to do well, seeing as how he was local.” Lodico said she was trying to ÿnd Mora on the screen throughout the show. Rachel Bryant, a 2008 OSU grad who has followed the show for the past seven seasons, said she was also watching for Mora.

“It’s just cool that somebody from Columbus made it that far,” Bryant said. “I knew before the show that it would be hard for most of the contestants to move on.” Bryant said she is used to seeing contestants sent home. “That’s what the show is about; it’s a competition,” she said. “Even though Bosa is a great singer [who is] far better than most other people, it takes a lot more to be the winner of ‘American Idol.’”

campus Girl adopted by softball team because of sick brother SAMANTHA SMITH Lantern reporter smith.5839@osu.edu The Ohio State softball team has a new addition this season. The team has adopted 12-year-old Sammy Hardy through the Safe on the Sidelines program, which helps the brothers and sisters of terminally ill children. Sammy’s 9-year-old brother Ryan has been adopted by Ohio Dominican’s men’s basketball team through the Friends of Jaclyn program.

the Safe on the Sidelines program, it seemed like a great alternative. The softball team met Sammy the second week of school and has been in contact with her ever since. As a Buckeye, Sammy will be invited to “attend practices, games and team bonding activities to help give her extra attention her parents may just not have time to give in their situation,” said Emily Meyer of athletics communications. So far the team and Sammy have gotten along very well and have spent a great deal of time with her.

Ryan was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor when he was 2, OSU softball coach Linda Kalafatis said. The Northwestern women’s lacrosse team helped Jaclyn, a young lacrosse player, through her illness which later lead to the organization that helps many other children like her. The program is meant to help those with pediatric brain tumors connect with a sports team. The OSU softball team will do the same with Sammy. Coach Kalafatis was interested in the Friends of Jaclyn program but was worried how the potential loss would effect the team. When she heard about

Softball players have taken Sammy to the climbing wall, out for ice cream and even went to watch one of Sammy’s basketball games. “Our mission is to brighten Sammy’s life a little bit,” Kalafatis said. Sammy was ofÿcially introduced as a member of the team at one of the team’s scrimmages Feb. 6. The softball team has created signs for Sammy and they plan to give her a jersey and a locker with her nameplate. Sammy will be a part of the softball team for “as long as she wants to be involved,” Kalafatis said.

NBA hopeful?

Titus says he thinks he can go pro More detrimental to Titus than the time lost on the court is the shortage of ideas to write about on his blog now that a “trillion” is unattainable. “It is weird, because I can’t do anything, really,” Titus said. “And it’s not just in the game, that I can’t get a ‘trillion,’ but I don’t even practice anymore. I don’t do anything. I just sit up here and just kind of watch. I get bored, really. I’m struggling to ÿnd stuff to write about because I’m not really as plugged in as I used to be.” As he wastes away aimlessly on the Buckeye bench, Titus can only ponder the direction his basketball career will take after leaving OSU.

Patients cancel hospital visits to avoid the roads, Medical Center spokesman says

been working around the clock to clear snow and ice from studentpopulated areas on campus. Although the Medical Center has not had a signiÿcant increase in snow-related injuries, many patients have canceled visits because of the weather, said David Crawford, OSU Medical Center spokesman. “Many patients have called to cancel their medical appointments due to the weather conditions,” he said. “This is typical. Many of our patients come from outside Franklin County and we realize it was not

safe for many of them to be on the roads. Their appointments are being rescheduled.” During the harsh weather, university ofÿcials recognize their responsibility to keep students in class so they can get their tuitions’ worth, said Shelly Hoffman, a university media relations spokeswoman. “We want to make sure people have access to their classes,” Hoffman said. “We’ve been able to keep lots [of] sidewalks fairly clear.” At this point, it is safe to assume that unless a blizzard of biblical proportions hits OSU, classes and events on campus will remain open and will continue as scheduled. “We’ll continue to evaluate the situation on a regular basis,” Armstrong said.

Five students showed their Buckeye spirit by sculpting the Script Ohio from Tuesday night’s snow. The masterminds behind the snow sculpture were Calvin Goodman, a ÿrst-year in computer science and engineering, and Matt Elliott, a second-year in marketing. The two had a conversation last Friday about what to do with the mountains of untouched snow. Goodman decided that because everyone else was sticking to “Frosty the Snowman,” he wanted to create a snow version of “Brutus the Buckeye.” After two hours of building they completed a fully sculpted, freestanding “snow Brutus” at Taylor Tower. Unfortunately, like many campus-area sculptures, Brutus survived only two hours: Someone kicked its legs and it came tumbling down.

After averaging zero points and 0.5 rebounds per game during his junior season, Titus applied for early entry into the NBA Draft. The league rejected his application, however, asking him to withdraw his name before he made a mockery of the process. One year later, despite the bum shoulder, Titus feels more prepared for the next level. His statistics speak just as loud, as he has increased his scoring and assist totals from last year, both from zero to 0.1. “I’ve talked to a few scouts and they said that if I rehab properly, by the time the draft comes around, I should be back to full strength,” he said. “As long as I can prove that I am, it shouldn’t be a big deal.”

Although he was disappointed about the ruined Brutus, Goodman did not accept defeat. While sitting in an engineering class, Goodman thought of other ways to show his Ohio State pride. He came up with the idea to sculpt the Script Ohio, made famous by the OSU Marching Band. Almost as soon as the idea popped into his head, Goodman rushed to Elliott and said, “Come on, we’re going to build the Script Ohio!” There was no major design process but the planning took an hour. “I laid out a line where I thought the script would be most visible and started with the small ‘O’ on the right,” Goodman said. “From there we just made everything proportional and worked from right to left.” Goodman and Elliott, along with three other friends, used shovels and their hands to build the snow tribute. They used a stick to hold up the delicate dotted “I.” The dot on the “I” was ceremoniously placed just as the marching band would do it, with Goodman running, bowing, then placing it on top. Goodman said there were no breaks taken in the building process. The team worked three-and-a-half hours to complete the project. He is predicting the sculpture, located at Taylor Tower next to the basketball courts facing Curl Drive, should stand for a week-depending on temperature and how much people respect it. There were risky moments in building the sculpture. At one point, two University Police ofÿcers stopped the team and asked, “Do you know about vandalism?” “They sounded really serious, “ McCray said, “and we were like, umm...” But then the ofÿcers smiled and said, “We’re just kidding!” Once again surprising the students, the ofÿcers then took photos of the team building their sculpture. Bumper stickers say “I bleed scarlet and gray,” but Kyle Harper, a second-year in food science, took that to heart; he cut his ÿnger on the shovel, but patched it up and continued to help. As the night went on, the sculpture-building faced adversity. The snow became icy instead of ° uffy, making it more difÿcult to pack the snow. There were some breaks in the pillars before adding the top of the letters, causing a few minor issues. McCray said getting the loops in the “O” and “H” took the most patience and work. At least 200 people came and took pictures throughout the building process, the team said. A friend of Goodman texted him saying, “You will be on the cover of every freshman pamphlet from now until forever.” The team created a Facebook page called “SNOHIO,” which they say they hope will get 10,000 fans.

Alaska from 7A

Siblings attend Ohio State after growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska town,” Bishop said. “Put it this way, I’ve never seen a better one.” It was there that Bishop would spend countless hours working on his shot and playing his sister, Teal. “All the way up until the year I left, we’d both be out there before school,” Bishop said. “And any chance it was above negative 20 [degrees] we would always play one-on-one. She was a defenseman and I was a forward.” Teal is still a defenseman and now is an assistant captain on the Ohio State women’s hockey team.

Her coming to Columbus is one of the factors that brought Hunter here. Bishop originally enrolled at the University of North Dakota when he was offered a scholarship to play hockey. But midway into his ÿrst season, Bishop decided it wasn’t the right ÿt and returned to Alaska. It was then Bishop visited OSU and was instantly hooked. “Teal [being here] was deÿnitely one of the factors, but there was a lot that went into it. Ohio State was one of the ÿrst schools who showed interest in me [after leaving North Dakota],” Bishop said. “When I came on my visit, Teal was here, my mom’s family was here and Ohio State has a good hockey program. So when you put it all together it was a really easy decision.” Now both in Columbus,

the Bishop siblings have had a chance to reunite. “It’s nice having him here,” Teal said of Hunter. “During our high school years, ÿrst he left, and then I left. We didn’t get to see each other much.” Hunter echoed Teal’s thoughts and added, “We’ve deÿnitely gotten closer living here. We live in apartments right next to each other, so I see her on a daily basis and it’s been really good for us.” The duo will help to lead their respective clubs this weekend as they are both in action. The women’s team travels to Minnesota to play Minnesota-Duluth. The men’s team hosts Alaska at the Schottenstein Center Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

Colonial Athletic Association champion, in their season opener this weekend. Villanova is a member of the Big East Conference, arguably the toughest conference. “Villanova is a playoff team. Their team is hungry, and we know we have a big challenge in front of us,” Myers said. After scrimmaging Duke and Greensboro last weekend, the team has learned a lot. “We have a lot to improve on,” Myers said. “We have to get better at facing off and we played way too much defense. We know we got to be very sound this week. Offensively we have a lot of young faces, we’re just hoping they can grow up in a hurry.” The Buckeyes play at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Saturday at 1 p.m.

However, having a high strength of schedule will be key if the Buckeyes do not win their conference outright. The strength of schedule will determine the teams that receive an at-large bid to the tournament. The Buckeyes are currently ranked No. 16 in terms of strength of schedule. The slate this year includes the eight conference foes, as well as top-ranked Notre Dame. The Buckeyes will face Villanova, the 2009

Buckeyes knock off Hoosiers for second time this season

Be a Part of the Worship Guide Published every Thursday

The win was the Buckeyes’ eighth in a row in Big Ten play, and with the Michigan State Spartans losing their third game in a row on Tuesday, OSU is now in a three-way tie for ÿrst in the conference. The Buckeyes are tied with the Spartans and their next opponent, Illinois. Considering their 1-3 start to conference play, it is fairly remarkable for them to be atop the league at this point in the season. If the Spartans continue to struggle, a win Sunday against the Fighting Illini could leave the Buckeyes all alone in ÿrst place. An outright regular season conference championship would be OSU’s ÿrst since the 2006-2007 season. Ohio State and Illinois square off in Champaign, Ill., Sunday at 1 p.m.

He originally suggested that the injury occurred in his left knee, but the surgery was conducted on his right knee. “He had a routine arthroscopic procedure performed on his right knee,” Poe said. “Good news is everything checked out ÿne and he should make a quick recovery.” Pryor is expected to return to health

NICK OTTE Lantern reporter otte.28@osu.edu The Ohio State men’s basketball team extended its in-conference winning streak Wednesday, beating the lowly Indiana Hoosiers 69-52. The Buckeyes (19-6, 9-3) started the game on a 9-0 run, but the Hoosiers held their own for a brief period in the ÿrst half to climb within two points at 22-20. The success, however, was short lived. As junior Evan Turner sat on the bench with two early fouls, the Buckeyes ended the half on

a 12-0 run. OSU led by 14 at the break and the Hoosiers were never close again. Even after playing only three minutes in the ÿrst half, Turner ended the game with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Sophomore William Buford led the way offensively for the Buckeyes, scoring 21 points on 9-17 shooting. He added seven rebounds and four assists. The story of the game, however, was the stellar play that OSU got from the center position. Junior Dallas Lauderdale matched his career high with 14 points, but more importantly, he grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a season-high seven shots. Reserve center Kyle Madsen added a career-high 11 points on 4-5 shooting.

Forward Hunter Bishop prepares for a shot on goal during a shootout against Ferris State last Saturday.

When the Ohio State men’s hockey team takes on Alaska this weekend, forward Hunter Bishop will be facing off against some familiar faces. The opportunity to play against his hometown team might provide just the spark Bishop needs. The Fairbanks, Alaska native is highly anticipating this weekend’s series. “It’s always fun to play against the hometown,” Bishop said. “It’s always easy for me to get amped up for home games, but playing against Alaska will make it a lot easier.” In last season’s series with Alaska, Bishop scored for the Buckeyes in the Saturday night game en route to a 6-2 victory. Bishop also recorded an assist against the Nanooks in a postseason victory last March. Coach John Markell is hoping for similar offensive production from his junior this weekend and the rest of the season. “Hunter’s got to be a little more productive for us,” Markell said. “His performance has to come up, and he’s capable of doing it.” So far this season, Bishop has recorded eight goals and eight assists for a total of 16 points, but Markell is looking for more from his forward. “He’s one of the guys I’m looking to for leadership,” Markell said. “Hunter is a guy who can really turn it on.” Bishop demonstrated his offensive capabilities last season when he racked up 14 goals and 17 assists. Bishop developed many of his offensive skills playing on the rink at his house while he was growing up. The rink his father built was complete with boards, ° ood lights and outdoor speakers. “We deÿnitely had the best outdoor rink in my

Lacrosse team prepared for new season in new conference ALLYSON KRAEMER Lantern reporter kraemer.18@osu.edu The men’s lacrosse team seems to never stop. When they aren’t practicing at 7:30 a.m., they are hitting the streets and serving the community. The team has already shattered its ÿrst goal of the season, earning more than 515 hours of community service. “When we talk about goals, it’s as important as any of them,” coach Nick Myers said. “We met with the seniors and they thought 500 hours was an attainable goal so we went for it.”

On the ÿeld, the Buckeyes are getting more than a fresh start; they are playing in a new conference. The Buckeyes joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference after the dissolution of the Great Western Lacrosse League. “For us the new conference presents a new challenge. It’s now eight teams and brings in the likes of Loyola, Hobart and Fairÿeld who are all very good, and maintain[s] the ÿve teams that were in the Great West,” Myers said. Leading the team into the new conference this year is tri-captain Scott Foreman. “I’m not the most vocal person. I lead more by example and hope the guys follow,” Foreman said. There is a tremendous amount of leadership on

the team this season. Foreman is joined by fellow senior captains Brandon Freeman and Andrew Stimmel, who the team elected in the fall. “Foreman has core values and really represents what the program is all about. We’re very proud of the effort he brings both on the ÿeld and off,” Myers said. As an individual and a teammate, Foreman wants to see the team stay tight and win every game. “Having more teams gives you more of a chance to get some better wins,” Foreman said. The ECAC doesn’t have conference playoffs. Therefore, the team with the best record at the
