That’s why, at Lawrenceville, you’ll first learn how to listen, prepare, and share your voice. So you can contribute to this big, dynamic thing called knowledge. You’ll start with courses (we have more than 200) that will help you discover just what you can do in the world. You can test pond samples for environmental science, compose a piano piece, or even create your own class. If that’s not enough, learn and serve abroad, start your own research or senior project, or attend a Senior Capstone lecture. By the end, you’ll be more ready for the world than it is for you. Old school. Brave new world. Over two centuries, we’ve grown – from a boys’ school to a diverse community of more than 800 students. From a single House to a 35-building, 700-acre campus. From being one of the oldest boarding schools in the U.S. to becoming one that’s mind-opening and forward-leaning. Today, Lawrenceville students come from about 30 states and 40 countries. They learn to grow their own food on our Big Red Farm. And eventually, they evolve – into global thinkers and extraordinary human beings. All that to say: We may be old, but our thinking has always been light years ahead.
A POWERFUL EFFECT Our on-campus, 30-acre solar farm (manicured by about 70 adorable sheep) generates nearly 10 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. That’s enough to power our school and share with the surrounding area. Plus, we offset 6,288 metric tons of CO2 each year – the same effect as taking 1,253 cars off the road.

Welcome to the Harkness table. At Lawrenceville, you’re in charge of class. You plus eleven others. Since 1936, we’ve empowered students to drive their own learning. To take responsibility for what happens at the table. Our teachers begin and end the discussion. What happens in between – entirely up to you. Radical thinking, for certain. shake things up. And at Lawrenceville, our teachers’ minds make them experts at molding nimble brains able to see not what is, but what ought to be. And at saying, “Let’s toss out the textbooks and go for a walk.” Our teachers lead trips to Bolivia and Tanzania, organize psychology symposiums, and push themselves to learn more and do better (just as they teach their students). Then they bring everything they learn out in the world back to the Harkness tables for students to dive into and devour. Dive head first into The Bowl. Every second-former (or freshman) begins life at Lawrenceville in The Bowl. It’s a space we’ve carved out just for second form students, away from the rest of the school – on purpose. Here’s why: Fourteen-year-olds are not ready for life as eighteen-year-olds. There’s a whole lot they need to learn first. So, at Lawrenceville, secondformers navigate life together – in the same dining hall, spaces, and classes (which are pass or fail during the first trimester). In the end, second-formers build long-lasting, life-influencing friendships with one another. And learn that Lawrenceville isn’t about jockeying for the highest position. Play with passion. All Lawrenceville students are required to play a sport. So pick what gets your heart pumping. Dance across the Kirby Arts Center stage. Whip around rivals on the lacrosse field. Spike it on the volleyball court. Whatever you do, play your heart out.

Big Red. And raring to play. There are just some things you can’t do alone – win football games, conquer crew races, triumph in hockey tournaments. So it’s a good thing we have 62 Mid-Atlantic Prep League varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams for you to join. To teach you how to work together toward something greater than you and you alone. Big Red players win NJSIAA women’s tennis and men’s swim championships. They play on national and international teams – sometimes as the youngest players. They’ve won Heisman trophies and played in the NFL, NBA, and NHL. All thanks to the support and hard work of their teammates. And after the season, when they hang up their cleats, Lawrenceville athletes take their team camaraderie into the classroom, the community, and the world.
