SMALL TOWN FEEL, BIG CITY ACCESS: LAWRENCEVILLE IS NEARBY THE CULTURAL HUB OF PRINCETON, N.J. AND IS A SHORT TRAIN RIDE FROM PHILADELPHIA, NEW YORK CITY, AND WASHINGTON, D.C.

around the harkness table and beyond At Lawrenceville, Harkness doesn’t happen just around the table. Our students roll up their sleeves to dig in, ask questions, collaborate, and solve problems in our local community and around the world. The entrepreneurial spirit and intellectual inquiry cultivated in our Harkness classrooms manifests in molecular biology research in partnership with a lab at Stanford University, robotics projects in the Gruss Center for Art and Design, and construction of a life-size canoe during an interdisciplinary study of the Lewis and Clark expedition. We listen to each other, discuss and reflect, then problem-solve as a team.

WHEN YOUR HOUSE BECOMES A

HOME

centuries of close-knit community

18

residential houses

For generations of Lawrentians, the first question they ask one another is “What House were you in?” Whether it’s painting your face before House Olympics, doubling over with laughter during a Saturday night Feed, or knocking on the door of your Head of House and talking through a problem, at Lawrenceville, your House truly becomes a home. Our community of 18 residential Houses is a place where students form lifelong friendships, develop the values of cooperation, tolerance and leadership, and make memories that last a lifetime.

Teacher. Coach. Mentor. Our teachers are committed to helping you discover and develop your intellectual passions, to think critically and creatively about the world around you, and to come up with solutions to the challenges and opportunities before you. You’ll find them everywhere — inspiring debate around our Harkness tables, driving creativity in our maker spaces and studios, creating vital community connections in our Houses, and coaching on our athletic fields. Lawrenceville teachers lead by example as well as instruction. More than 90 percent of our teachers hold advanced degrees, and many make direct contributions to their disciplines as published scholars, scientific researchers, and leading innovators in education.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement Diversity permeates every aspect of a student’s experience at Lawrenceville. In the classroom, in co-curricular activities, and through our residential life program, students are provided the opportunity to explore and appreciate the perspectives and identities of others as well as their own. Lawrenceville is committed to the belief that all students’ critical thinking skills are enhanced in an environment that is racially, ethnically, culturally, religiously, and socioeconomically diverse. Within the context of a traditional American boarding school setting, we provide an academic curriculum that reflects a global perspective.

ARTS AND CULTURE The arts at Lawrenceville seek to inspire and connect. Our lively and comprehensive performing arts department offers musical and dramatic theater, vocal and instrumental music, and dance. Our visual arts program challenges students to develop visual awareness and acuity through classes encompassing historical analysis and creation. We believe the arts are an essential element in broadening students’ approach to problem solving, to aesthetic enjoyment, to other people, and to life itself.

Experiential Learning We intentionally design learning experiences that will deepen your understanding of the world, reinforce self-confidence, spawn creativity, and teach initiative. Every experiential learning opportunity includes focused reflection, which allows our students to deepen their knowledge, develop skills, clarify values, and increase their capacity to contribute to our communities. From our Harkness travel programs, to sustainable agriculture and conservation on the Big Red Farm, to our Outing Club and Joshua L. Miner Ropes Course, learning by doing is a way of life at Lawrenceville.

SUSTAINABILITY Drawing on the legacy of noted alumnus and ecologist Aldo Leopold (Class of 1905) and celebrated landscape architect and campus designer Frederick Law Olmsted, sustainable living is woven into the very fabric of Lawrenceville’s

GRUSS CENTER FOR ART AND DESIGN

identity. From student-driven recycling and composting efforts to campus water quality research, Big Red goes green is a way of life.

If you can imagine it, you can create it at the Gruss Center for Art and Design (GCAD). Lawrenceville’s makerspace includes a fabrication lab, digital design rooms, and a large flexible project room for ideation and rapid prototyping. Whether building a guitar from scratch, creating an app to help a local nonprofit, launching a handcrafted rocket, or simply trying something new, GCAD gives you the freedom and support to experiment and grow.

big red athletics Big Red spirit radiates whether you play three varsity sports, represent your House intramural team, or deck yourself out in red and black to cheer for your classmates. Our premier interscholastic and intense intramural competition dates back centuries and is bolstered by a comprehensive fitness program that builds character, instills team values, and fosters a life-long commitment to positive physical and emotional habits. Our three-term sports requirement gives students the chance to participate in a variety of options, developing citizenship and leadership, sportsmanship and fair play, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

EXCELLENCE. SPIRIT. TEAMWORK.

Featuring more than 70 teams across 21 interscholastic sports, as well as intramurals and recreational options, Lawrenceville’s athletics program is a true extension of the House and Harkness learning experience. We are equal parts athleticism and intelligence, devoted teammates and dedicated intellectuals. Big Red spirit thrives across generations, both on the field and throughout our lives as Lawrentians.

ATHLETICS. DINING. RECREATION. With approximately 250,000 square feet of functional space, the forthcoming Tsai Field House (phase I opens in fall 2022) will bring the community together by combining dining, fitness, wellness, and athletics, offering a holistic approach to student well-being. A community resource unlike any other at an independent school, Tsai Field House will provide opportunities for competition, recreational activity, socialization, and nourishment, extending the sense of belonging that is already so much a part of House and Harkness.
