2018 LAWRENCEVILLE SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM

LIVE LEARNING LEARN LIVING

Accelerate your academic work, experience new fields of study, and discover new areas of interest through fullday or residential enrollment. Our Harkness pedagogy and interdisciplinary courses will challenge you to think deeply and broadly about the subject material and to work closely with your classmates to design, build and perform your culminating class project. You will become a member of one of Lawrenceville’s historic Houses as you learn to succeed on a residential campus, engaging in house competitions, talking with your housemates and teammates, and enjoying socializing with the community.

We’ll challenge, guide, and encourage students to experiment.

Welcome prospective summer scholars. Join us and ignite your love of learning by becoming a Lawrenceville Summer Scholar!

OUR MISSION

The goal of Lawrenceville Summer Scholars is to provide an educational summer program that produces innovative leaders, breakthrough thinkers, and imaginative problem solvers. We challenge you as students to learn in powerful new ways, engage in active inquiry, and develop a life-long commitment to personal, environmental, and community responsibility.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our low student-to-teacher ratio ensures that each summer scholar receives the individual attention needed to flourish in a safe and supportive environment. From the moment you enter a class at Lawrenceville, the experience is hands-on. We’ll challenge, guide, and encourage you to experiment. With a balance of class time and outdoor fun, you’ll learn to think critically, problem-solve, collaborate and socialize – and along the way, discover what you love doing!

FACULTY & STAFF

The program’s faculty and staff are experts in their disciplines. Some faculty are staff at The Lawrenceville School, and others from many prestigious private and public secondary schools and graduate studies programs.

HARKNESS Since 1936, Lawrenceville has been educating students using the Harkness method that allows students and teacher to sit together at an oval table to engage in group discussion. This configuration reflects a philosophy of education that values the expression of ideas in a comfortable setting and challenges students to gain personal and academic confidence as they explore a variety of student perspectives. Central to the success of such pedagogy is small class size, and an expectation of student preparation that allows them to take an active part in their own learning.

HOUSE Lawrenceville’s House System is unique among independent schools in America and has been an important part of Lawrentian life for more than two centuries. Students are assigned to houses based on age and sex. Each House is a small group within the larger School community that fosters pride, responsibility, and respect for the contributions of others. Throughout the summer, you will compete with your House for the coveted “House Cup” award.

RESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR Join us for a three week stay as a Residential Scholar. You will select both a morning and an afternoon class to actively engage in during your stay. In addition to the Summer Scholars program’s focus on learning, the residential program offers a variety of recreational activities in the afternoon hours, every evening, and on the weekends. These activities are intended to provide students with fresh air, exercise, social interaction, a bonding-focused community experience, and lots of fun! Activities are designed for a variety of participant interests and opportunities to develop new passions.

DAY SCHOLAR Monday – Friday Full-Day: 9:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. Extended Day 9:00 a.m. – 5:15 p.m. Enroll in morning and afternoon courses and spend a full day immersed in collaborative study at Lawrenceville Summer Scholars. All day scholars will experience traditional Lawrenceville House activities and school meetings.

LOCATION

Our 700-acre campus is centrally located between New York and Philadelphia. The school affords its scholars unrivaled opportunities to discover two of America’s greatest cities.
