The Legacy of Beverly Cleary By Megan Lanham mrlanham@lc.edu Prolific author Beverly Cleary, who introduced over 70 years worth of young people to the pleasure of reading, passed away on Mar. 25, 2021, at the age of 104 in her home in Carmel, Calif. Her publisher HarperCollins confirmed the news Friday, Mar. 26, in a press conference. Cleary was an American Award winning writer of over 40 books, selling over 91 million copies worldwide since publishing her first book in 1950. She was a pioneer in children’s literature, writing with a wit that realistically portrayed the struggles of childhood, particularly in the middle, working class. One of the most enduringly popular and well known of Cleary’s series of books revolved around the spunky and vexing Ramona Quimby, being invented as an afterthought when she realized that nearly every character she had written about was an only child. Driving her older sister Beezus up the wall, Ramona

Page 3

was always finding trouble. From baking a cake mixed with her favorite doll in the batter, to making a sign to persuade her father to stop smoking with a misjudged space, writing “NOSMO KING” Her first book “Henry Huggins” was inspired by a question from a child while working as a librarian; “Where are the books about kids like us?” She went on to help not only shape three generations worth of readers with the answer to that question, but the very foundation of children’s literature itself. Cleary was born on Apr. 12, 1916, in Mcminnville, Ore. and grew up in Portland, where most of her books take place. In Portland, she is considered a local hero; The Beverly Cleary School, a public school in the city, was named after her, and statues of several of her most famous characters were erected in Grant Park in 1995.

Johnson & Johnson Pause Covid-19 Vaccine

Layout and story by Lynn McDonald lmmcdonald@lc.edu Many were shocked last week when news hit that the Johnson & Johnson Coronavirus vaccine had been paused due to health concerns linked to the injection. Reports of severe issues with blood clots led The US Food and Drug Administration to suggest a pause in delivering the inoculations until a medical investigation could be performed. This caused a ripple of unease through the millions of people who had received the Johnson & Johnson vaccination thus far. Alex Johnson, editor-in-chief of The Bridge, experienced a range of emotions. “I was extremely anxious when I first heard. I had trouble focusing and spent a lot of time reading news articles, trying to find something to calm me down. Once I found how limited the reactions were, I felt a little better, but I was definitely tense for a couple days. I was relieved when I received the vaccine and I still feel safer having had it.”

News

Craig Johnson, web specialist for The Bridge, had a similar reaction. “I was one of the skeptics on getting vaccinated in the first place so when I heard that they were pausing the J&J shot over health concerns I would say it worried me at first, but after I checked into it and [saw] that the blood clotting issue had affected only 6 out of over 7 million people that were vaccinated, I was relieved.”

the benefits outweigh the risks. “The safety and well-being of the people who use our product is our number one priority and we strongly support awareness of the signs and symptoms of this extremely rare event to ensure the correct diagnosis, appropriate treatment and expedited report by health care professionals.”

According to CNN Health, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been administered to eight million people in total. Six women in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 48, developed severe blood clotting problems, resulting in one death. Adversely, during the clinical trial, one 25-year-old man was stricken by the same affliction.

On Apr. 23, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet to discuss the reported cases and determine how to move forward. ACIP chair Dr. Jose Romero expects that enough information has been gleaned to effectively assess the situation. In his opinion, the CDC is not likely to suggest the vaccination be completely halted.

Dr. Paul Stoffels, chief scientific officer for Johnson & Johnson, stresses that the blood clotting disorder is extremely rare, and

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccination is delivered in one shot, with an estimated 66.3% efficacy rate in clinical trials.

“I was extremely anxious when I first heard.”

Artbreeder: The Art of AI By Megan Lanham mrlanham@lc.edu In recent years, it has become possible to extract visions and concepts from deep learning systems and neural networks. A neural network is a computer system that is closely modeled after the human brain and nervous system. With this discovery, it has not only attracted attention to AI researchers, but also by many people who love to create and experiment. The open source character of interfaces and the high interactivity of notebooks within neural networks have made it possible to play around and dig down into the artificial consciousness. One fun and comprehensive way to do so would be the application GANbreeder, recently rebranded Artbreeder. Artbreeder is a user-friendly application by Joel Simon. It is a BigGAN model set pre-trained on ImageNet, Kaggle sets and other visuals from existing DNAs in a collaborative process with other users, artists and viewers.

From here, the user can pick a category and then a creation method. They can compose, which allows you to take aspects of multiple images within the website to create a whole new image; upload, which allows you to upload an original image; and animate, which allows you to animate transitioning frames from three different works of art. From there, you can go even further and tweak a piece to your liking via additional features and parameters until you have a desired final result.

If you pay a visit to Artbreeder, you will be confronted with several of its diverse range of generated original images. Each Artbreeder image is created with input parameters that you choose by modifying the aspects of other images. The site stores the lineage of each image so that you can see all who contributed to the final design. At the moment, there are nine sections on the website; General, Portraits, Landscapes, Scio Bio Art, Paintings, Characters, Albums, Furries and Anime Portraits. The project is in constant development, so new functions and models are being updated all the time.

Page 5

This is a very versatile, unique and overall fun website to play around with. The fact that such diverse, original images can be created out of an AI is fascinating. If you are looking to kill some time, I’d suggest trying this out.

A Look Back at the Time Sony Put Rootkits on People’s Computers by Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu

The year was 2005, MySpace was one of the largest sites online, YouTube just started and one of the most common programs on people’s computers was for file sharing; Napster, Kazza or Limewire. At the beginning of 2004, 532 lawsuits were filed against people for downloading their music from one of these applications. According to a Pew Research Center poll, 27% of internet users regularly download music illegally. So, the great minds of Sony BMG decided to prevent people from copying CDs. How did they do it, you might ask? By putting DRM that worked like a rootkit. First of all, what is a rootkit? According to Malwarebytes, a rootkit is, “a malicious type of software that provides root-level, privileged access to a computer while hiding its existence and actions.” Root-level is the highest part of the computer, permissions wise, where the parts of a computer are controlled. Sony was pretty adamant on stopping the copying of music, with Steve Heckler, senior vice president of IT at Sony Pictures, saying in 2000 that, “we will develop technology that transcends the individual user. We will firewall Napster at [the] source -- we will block it at your cable company, we will block it at Page 7

your phone company, we will block it at your [Internet-service provider]. We will firewall it at your PC,” according to an article by the Daily Forty-Niner. The situation started when Sony began putting Extended Copy Protection on their CDs. The program was made by the UK firm First 4 Internet. The program ran automatically when a CD with the software was put into a computer running Windows. The user was presented with a EULA (End User Licence Agreement), the disk would eject if the EULA was rejected or go through with installing the software if the user agreed (without mention of any hidden programs in the EULA). It would then prevent users from using media player software other than the one provided. There was no uninstaller and removing it without care would hide your CD drive directory. The later web based uninstaller left massive security holes Security researcher Mark Russinovich remarked in 2005 that, “the entire experience was frustrating and irritating. Not only had Sony put software on my system that uses techniques commonly used by malware to mask its presence, the software is poorly written and provides no means for uninstall.” Other researchers had found out about the DRM, but didn’t want to write about it due to the DMCA preventing people from reverse engineering copy protection methods. Opinion

The cloaking method that XCP used allowed malware to hide with it. The Backdoor.IRC.Snyd.a trojan was the first to use this method and was discovered within two weeks of the reveal, according to Bitdefender. Sony also used a DRM by SunComm called MediaMax CD-3, this program installs itself regardless of the choice of the user at the EULA.

saying that, “Sony BMG deeply regrets any inconvenience to our customers and remains committed to providing an enjoyable and safe music experience.” This didn’t stop several class-action lawsuits from being filed. There were two lawsuits in the state of Texas, with Sony paying the state $750,000 in fees, and them paying at least $25 to anybody who had the DRM disable their CD drive.

The reaction once people found out about XCP and MediaMaxx was one of outrage. Stewart Baker, Assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, scolded Sony and other manufacturers, saying that, “it’s very important to remember that it’s your intellectual property; it’s not your computer. And in the pursuit of protection of intellectual property, it’s important not to defeat or undermine the security measures that people need to adopt in these days.”

Bands did protest the DRM measures with My Morning Jacket burning copies of their album without the software on it, “If that didn’t work, we offered to burn a copy of the album and send it to the fan who already purchased a copy of Z. To date, we have sent out over 100 copies of [the album] to friends and fans who have purchased the album and have not been able to enjoy the music.”

Sony initially felt that it was overboard with Thomas Hesse, President of Sony BMG’s digital business division saying that, “most people, I think, don’t even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?” Sony then stopped manufacturing the XCP discs, and recalling them on Nov. 14, 2005, with Sony

Time magazine has ranked XCP as one of the worst inventions in history, as it broke computers, was easily bypassable (using a permanent marker to put a line around the disc broke the DRM) and tarnished the trust between bands, the public and the record label.

Health and well being Lakyn Gardner lagardner@lc.edu Do you want to be more fit? Do you want to lose some weight? Do you want to live a healthier lifestyle? These three questions all have a simple answer and it’s all up to you. Throughout this article, I want to help explain and break down some common misconceptions and provide some information on how to live a healthier lifestyle. We’re going to be covering dieting, sleep and exercise. To start off, the number one thing for losing weight or living a healthy lifestyle is your diet. If you’re wanting to lose weight you’re going to want to be in a calorie deficit, meaning eating fewer calories than what your body needs to function. To break it down there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat, so, if you do a simple 500 calorie daily cut you will be losing a pound a week. Unfortunately, there is no super diet that allows you to lose weight in the snap of a finger. Each diet has its own unique ways of working. For example, one of the most common diets right now is the keto diet, which consists of low carb and high fat foods. A lot of people claim that they lost ten pounds in a week, sadly that’s mostly water weight because carbs in our body hold water better than any other source of nutrients. So, when we deplete our glycogen storage of carbs we naturally lose weight because we’re no longer retaining that water. There are many other diets out there that promise to help you lose weight very quickly, but all it really is about is consistency. You need to consistently eat the same amount of calories

Page 9

every day. I know counting calories can seem intimidating at first, but there are many apps, like My Fitness Pal, that help you track things. I personally can’t recommend the keto diet, I recommend a more balanced diet of fats, proteins and carbs; just something simple to get you in the flow of counting calories. I personally do a medium carb, low-fat, high protein diet but that’s to supplement my heavy, bodybuilder style lifts. There are a lot of YouTube channels that show you how to make healthy versions of your favorite foods, which is super nice for dieting. I wanted to throw this in at the end because I see it all the time: do not starve yourself or only eat one meal a day. Starvation is extremely counterproductive, it puts the body into a “starvation mode”, making it harder to lose weight. Next, we will be taking on sleep. Sleep is the number one thing on this list that will aid in weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. Sleep is commonly overlooked by people because they think as long as they work hard and eat the same thing every day, they are going to gain a lot of muscle and lose pounds of fat, which is only true to an extent. A common misconception is that in the gym you’re building muscle, however that’s the only place you’re not; the gym breaks muscle down. Sleep enhances muscle recovery through protein synthesis and releases natural HGH from the body. So, if you’re not getting good sleep, you’re essentially wasting all that hard work exercising.

Opinion

Finally, we’re going to touch on exercise, which I think is a really big one. For some people exercise is scary, for some, it’s a form of therapy, for others it’s unnecessary. Personally, exercise and lifting weights are therapy. It’s the only place I can let my mind go and just do something I love. Pushing myself to the edge every lift, really making myself step to the next level, is something I enjoy. But I wasn’t always like that, I used to be a chunky kid who hated the idea of it and could never go into a gym because I was so nervous about my body. One of the best things I can tell you is that when you’re in the gym, nobody’s looking at you unless you’re cut like a Greek god. In the gym, there is nothing but mutual respect for one another’s goals. At times, there may be those that silently judge, but they are the people that are only going to be there for three weeks and then fall off the train. When it comes to exercise, consistency is key. If you’re wanting to lose weight, I would recommend something as simple as a light change up; for example, if you’re doing no exercise right now, just go for a 30-minute walk every morning. It’s amazing what the small changes can do for a person, workouts don’t have to be hour long weightlifting sessions, it could be a 10-minute calisthenics workout or plyometrics if you like. Additionally, don’t let people pressure you into thinking you have to be the skinniest or the strongest person; exercise is about being happy with your body and personal growth.

Opinion

It’s a hard thing that everybody struggles with. It comes along with life. I’ve been lifting for six years and I still want to be stronger and I still hate my body, however knowing that I keep pushing every single day and trying as hard as I can makes me happy. To wrap this up I want to touch on some key points. Make sure you’re making time for your exercises; even if it is 10 minutes, make sure that 10 minutes has your undivided attention and you’re giving it 100% of what you have, because if you’re not, you’re just wasting your time. Next, you don’t have to starve yourself to diet, you don’t have to avoid your favorite foods either. You can have everything you want, just in moderation. Also, there’s a lot of healthy options out there that you just have to look into and take the time to make. To briefly touch on sleep, it is a big part of life and should not be taken lightly; you need sleep, simple as that. People tend to say they don’t have time for workouts or they don’t have time to meal prep, but somehow they have time to drive to McDonald’s or mindlessly scroll social media. There’s only one thing that we’re guaranteed every day when we wake up; there are 24 hours. Those 24 hours are for whatever you want to do. Of course, eight of that is for sleep and another eight for work, that still leaves you with another eight hours to do whatever you want. I’m sure you could find 30 minutes to workout. I hope this helped motivate you or give you a kickstart with a little bit of information to get on a journey to better yourself.

The Wonderful World of Moomins By Megan Lanham Illustrations by Mary Curvey

First things first, I bet you’re asking yourself, “what the heck is a ‘Moomin?’” Moomins, or rather the Moomins, are the central characters in a series of children’s fantasy books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator, Tove Jansson, which was a property originally published in Swedish by Schildts in Finland. They are a family of white, round, fairy tale characters with large snouts that make them resemble hippopotamuses. Though, I wouldn’t call them as such, as they would be offended, despite the resemblance. The Moomin family are trolls consisting of Moomintroll or just Moomin. The main protagonists are the little boy of the family, as well as Moomin’s parents Moominpapa, and Moominmama. Moominpappa is a somewhat restless spirit. He was orphaned at a young age and ventured out in his youth. Though he has now settled down, instead opting to write his adventures in his memoirs. Moominmama is a calm mother who takes care of Moominhouse and makes sure it is a safe place to be. She simply wants everyone to be happy, encourages independence, but will come to help settle things if something goes wrong. The family live in their house in Moominvalley, though in the past their more short-term residences have included a lighthouse and theatre. They have had many adventures alongside their various friends such as Little My, Snufkin Snork Maiden and Sniff. In

total, nine books were released in the series, together with five picture books and a comic strip being released between 1945 and 1993 The Moomins have been the basis for numerous television series, films and even a theme park called Moomin World in Naantali, Finland. It is an internationally beloved franchise and a household name across the world, in countries such as Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain and even Japan. However, up until recently, The Moomins had fallen under the radar within North America. Starting from 2019 with the newest adaptation, Finnish and British-Produced TV Series Moominvalley, it has been gaining traction. Particularly, on social media there has been a buzz from western audiences. I can’t count how many times I’ve scrolled through Tumblr or Twitter and have found fanart of the critters of Moominvalley. The most popular of which being the characters of Moomin and Snufkin.

are based off of feelings and people within her life that are surprisingly modern. This has allowed western audiences to connect with the franchise and even Tove herself, even though both are almost a century old. The official Moomins channel has released the full 90s Japanese adaption of Moomin or Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka, which is arguably the best adaptations amongst fans. This particular series has served as a gateway to the world of Moomin Valley and its characters to many newer viewers. Now, more so than ever with the pandemic of 2020, it has provided a means of escape and relaxation.

Creating is not the only thing people are doing. They are also discovering the rich history of Moomins and their author, as the two are intimately intertwined with each other. With how personal Moomins was to Tove Jansson, many aspects, views and even characters

A Look Back at 2005’s Bubble by Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu WARNING: The following review does spoil the movie, so I guess keep that in mind. You don’t expect much from Dollar Tree, right? Most people go there to get snacks or to get cheap toys to placate Lil’ Billy temporarily, as it will inevitably break. However, they also have a small selection of DVDs, usually films that no one has ever heard of, like the 2019 German family film “Die Drei !!!” (“The Three Exclamations”), which was retitled as “BFF Detectives,” by Viva Films. But there has been one film I saw at Dollar Tree that grabbed my attention, the cover had doll heads and was in all white. The film was called “Bubble,” and for a dollar, why not? The film was directed by Stephen Sodenburgh, who’s most well known for directing “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” and the Ocean’s trilogy of films. This film, unlike the earlier and later films that dictate his catalogue, is distributed by Magnolia Pictures and HDNet Films, who had signed a deal with Sodenburgh for six films, with Bubble being the first. The film is also interesting as it stars non-professional actors, with the lead being found at the KFC drive through and the antagonist being a beauty shop owner. The film revolves around Martha, a middle aged, working-class woman who works at a doll factory in the Mid-Ohio Valley while taking care of her elderly father. She works with a shy man named Kyle, who she sees as a friend. After going to church (where a blue light shines on her) a new woman named Rose is hired as a coworker for Martha. Martha takes coldly to her as she keeps demanding favors and she steals from the people she housesits for. Kyle takes a liking to Rose however, taking her out on a date while Martha is put on babysitting duty. After coming back, Rose is confronted by her ex, and her daughters father, over money and weed. Martha leaves, mentioning a bad headache. It is revealed that Rose was strangled throughout the night, and the detective (who is played by an actual police inspector) interrogates Kyle and the boyfriend. Martha comes to Kyle’s house to bring him a fishing pole she bought for him and is shocked and believes Page 13

The too strange to not be intriguing cover of “Bubble”. Via Wikipedia. that the boyfriend did it. The inspector asks her some questions and she says that she didn’t do anything, The inspector comes back a frew days later to arrest Martha for the murder, saying her fingerprints were on Rose’s neck. In a deleted scene, it is revealed that Martha has a brain tumor and can undergo dramatic personality shifts (which was referenced with the bad headache). Kyle’s mom gets a job at the plant, and at the end scene, the blue light visits her and she sees her standing over Rose’s body. The film ends after that, clocking in at a short 73 mins. The soundtrack throughout the film is sparse, with it being acoustic guitar strumming over certain montages. The film takes a look at what it is like to live in the area. With Rose’s actress, Misty Wilkens, saying in the behind the scenes that, “You try, you work, you save your money, and you still don’t get anywhere. That’s normal for a lot of people.” According to Martha’s actor, the “bubble” is the Mid-Ohio valley. Entertainment

Punk Rock Factory gives Disney some attitude yn

By Alex Johnson amjohnson@lc.edu What happens when you combine punk rock and Disney? Well, the cover band Punk Rock Factory decided to do just that. And it’s amazing. Punk Rock Factory (PRF) is a U.K. based punk band that exclusively plays covers. They don’t do covers of punk songs though; they do punk covers of non-punk songs (similar to Me First and the Gimme Gimmes). PRF consists of Peej (guitar/vocal), Benj (bass/vocal), Ryan (guitar) and Kob (drums/vocals), and they’ve been punkafying every genre you can think of since 2014. Punk rock Taylor Swift? Check. Punk TV theme songs? Check. Punk Hanson? Why not? Late last year, Punk Rock Factory decided to tackle Disney with “A Whole New Wurst”, an album consisting of 13 Disney covers. Songs from “Frozen,” “Moana,” “The Lion King” and more are featured. “Our vision for this was always to stay true to the songs and their structures,” PRF wrote in a Dec. 2020 Facebook post, “so, when you sing along in the car or shower […] you’re not put off by us changing the very core structures of them.” The covers are arranged very well, with much of the melody – which is often done on piano for Disney songs – being handled by the extremely talented lead guitarist, Ryan, in an often hair-metal-esque style. Peej’s voice is deep and scratchy, but he can push a lot of range out of it; he doesn’t scream, he “belts it”. Despite the fast, driving riffs and more aggressive vocals, I found most of the songs kept their Disney majesty and splendor. Also present on the album are several well-known guest vocalists. Jaret Reddick of Bowling for Soup, Liv Haynes of NOT UR GIRLFRENZ and Tony Lovato of Mest are just a few of the artists featured on “A Whole New Wurst’’. The guest vocalists fill out the sound and help give that big, ensemble feel that Disney is known for. Entertainmnet

Physical copies (CD and vinyl) of “A Whole New Wurst” can be purchased on Punk Rock Factory’s official website, though it’ll be coming from the U.K. so it could take a few weeks to get. I would also recommend you check out the rest of Punk Rock Factory’s music (especially if you’re not that into Disney). Their covers are all done very well and the range of songs they do ensures everyone will find at least one they know and love.

Retro Review: Pokémon Blue/Red By Lakyn Gardner lagardner@lc.edu Welcome back to Retro review. This week we are reviewing Pokémon Blue/Red. Pokémon Blue/Red, As it was known in the United States, was developed by Game Freak in 1996 and published by Nintendo for the original Game Boy. Pokémon is an RPG (role playing game) that is based around training, leveling up and evolving your Pokémon, or “pocket monsters”, to beat all eight gym leaders in The Elite 4. The game has a deeper quest to complete the Pokedex, which means find and capture all the Pokémon in the game. At the time this game was released, in 1996, there were only 151 Pokémon. I have to start by saying this game was the starting block of it all for Pokémon. Red/Blue was a commercial success and to this day it has thousands upon millions of committed fans. However, this game had quite a bit of a flaw. Some Pokémon in the Pokedex were not obtainable through typical methods. To obtain Mew and Dragonite, for example, you had to do a combination of inputs to break the code in the game. Occasionally you could encounter a Pokémon known as “MissingNo.” which was just a blob on the screen from messed up code. A simple save and restart would fix the game. The game’s inputs were fairly simple considering there’s only up, down, left, right, A, B, select and start on the original Game Boy. This game was before running was a thing in Pokémon so it was a very slow process. Leveling up your Pokémon had to be done by switching them out for certain battles to gain XP (experience points) which was a grueling process; which I enjoyed every minute of. Workout Review “CBUM” By Lakyn Gardner lagardner@lc.edu Welcome back to workout review. Today we’re taking on the 2020 Mr. Olympia’s workout. Chris Bumstead is the current title Holder of Mr. Olympia. Though he just retired, Chris Bumstead is somebody I recently found on YouTube; but he’s Mr. Olympia, so I should have known about him.

he doesn’t do anything in hiding. This goes to show you that he’s just the hardest worker anywhere he goes no matter what room he’s in, he’s the hardest worker there. I believe seeing his mindset allowed me to push myself even harder for this workout.

The number one thing Chris sells for his workouts is complete muscle exhaustion. Which means you push your muscles to their absolute physical limit and then some. For example, if he is doing the bench, he will do his regular sets and then, to finish off, he will do pause sets and force his body to regain some energy before he starts again; he will continue to do that until he no longer can. Additionally, he adds negative reps of heavyweight to break down the muscle fibers. As always, the full workout will be at the bottom.

Like I previously stated, this workout is amazing. I would recommend an intermediate level of lifting ability, not because the lifts are hard, but because this is a form-focused exhaustion workout, and you need to know how to safely fail a lift. Also, if you don’t have a gym partner, I would recommend using a resistance band to do the negative reps. It will keep you safe if you fail. Overall, I give this workout at 10 out of 10, truly a masterpiece.

This is the most sore from a workout I’ve ever been. I absolutely demolished my chest; anytime I do anything, it activates my chest muscles after the workout. I must say the negative reps, along with complete muscle exhaustion, is my new favorite thing. I’m personally ecstatic to add this into my workout. I believe if you are no longer seeing progress, you should definitely give this workout a try; it will give you a run for your money. One of my favorite things about Bumstead is his mindset. He puts it all out there, everything, even for his competition to see;

Horimiya is a long-anticipated Shojo series with a touching approach to romance. This anime is more than worth watching simply for its visuals and character art. The series does a phenomenal job, in both sub and dub, of perfectly emphasizing moments of quiet intimacy, loneliness and self-doubt. Horimiya follows an isolated and intense young man, Izumi Miyamura, whose life changes in a chance encounter with his popular classmate Kyoko Hori outside of school. Despite the producers having one season to tell the tale of the characters, the series does an excellent job of building the connection between our Izumi and Kyoko. Overall, Horimiya is a refreshing and naturalistic love story that will leave you longing for more.

From Shonen to Shojo, we will breakdown the top 10 anime you should be watching for the rest of 2021.

02 Demon Slayer

The thrilling Shonen series follows Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy who seeks to become a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered and his younger sister Nezuko is turned into a demon. The show somehow manages to imbue a well-used setting with new life and produced some of the most dynamic and engaging fight sequences in animation today. Tanjiro, in particular, is a truly likable character, the kind of purehearted boy you wouldn’t expect in a largely unforgiving series. The entire anime is eye candy from the opening sequence to the final moments. The first movie in the series will release Friday, Apr. 23.

05 Beastars

The name itself might simply conjure up thoughts of furries, and if that is your thing, you probably already love this anime. If not, consider giving Beastars a chance. Set in a world where beasts coexist, a wolf awakens to his own predatory urges as his school deals with murder in its midst. With an intro that dominated my Spotify playlist for 2020 and a group of characters that transcend their animal appearance, Beastars is a striking and snappy anime with a season two on the horizon for July 2021.

A thrilling and dark anime, The Promised Neverland centers around a group of children in their plan to escape from their orphanage after learning the sinister truth behind their existence. Don’t let the innocent-looking child characters fool you, The Promised Neverland takes a number of horrifying twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The intricate plot and numerous surprises from season one leave the newly released season two with much to live up to, but I have high hopes that it will exceed our expectations.

My Hero Acadamia

My Hero Academia is an unabashedly earnest series that essentially is an anime take on the X-Men. In a world where most humans have superpowers, referred to as quirks, the plot follows a group of highschool kids training to be the next generation of heroes. My Hero is considered to be one of the best shonen anime in production and Season 5 is currently being released.

The final season in the reboot of Fruits Basket is set to air later this year, after the shocking ending of Season 2. Fruits Basket tells the story of Tohru Honda, an orphan girl who meets the Soma family, a group of individuals that are possessed by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. With many poignant moments and romantic undertones, this anime is fun and heartfelt and is a great take on the original, which aired in 2001. Usually, it’s difficult to surpass the OG content, but so far Fruits Basket has managed to outdo it in many respects.

09 High schooler Yuri finds herself atop a skyscraper in a strange world, where she must survive against masked assailants bent on killing their prey in a competition for god. The Netflix anime, at face value, might sound similar to the plotline of other great series, like The Future Diaries, but the show holds a lot of unique intrigue in its own right. Through unexpected relationships and a deeperthan-surface plot, High Rise Invasion is a new release that is a pleasant surprise.

In Okinawa, a group of hardcore skaters participate in a secret, no-holds-barred competition after midnight known as “S”, racing each other on skateboards down a winding road carved out of an abandoned mine. Like the best sports anime, Sk8 the Infinity builds interesting rapport between competitors and allies alike, surprisingly interwoven with heartfelt and emotional moments.

Neon Genesis is a widely known cult classic anime which originally released in the late ’90s and has another film slated to launch later in 2021. The series is so monumental and so influential in the history of Japanese culture, that it’s worth watching no matter what. Set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm, particularly in the futuristic and fortified city of Tokyo-3, the anime centers around Shinji, a teenage boy recruited into the shadowy organization Nerv to pilot a giant bio-machine mecha named “Evangelion” into combat against beings called “Angels”. The truly iconic work explores a number of themes through biblical imagery and psychoanalysis.

Bleach

Another cult classic anime, Bleach is set to see its final season later this year, nearly 10 years after its last release. The season will complete the final arc of the series, The Thousand-Year Blood War, some news which fans -- who used to stay up late watching Adult Swim -will revel at. The previous ending left much to be desired for many and we hope that the final season will shed light on a few questions.

“Not all men are created equal.” My Hero Academia Layout and Article by Breanna Sak Anime has held an unfavorable stigma about it that has made many feel deterred from seeing what it has to offer. However, I am here to help make the jump into anime feel more approachable by showing a close up view of what you can expect. Having been a part of the anime community for almost 8 years, I know which animes are sure to get your heart pounding with anticipation. I am also pairing each of the shows with another, so if you enjoy one of them, there is a

My Hero Academia has become one of the leading animes of this decade, superseding it’s shonen predecesores with quality animation and incredible pacing to keep an emotional investment built up; that is sure to obliterate any lackluster expectations. While this show may start with a cliche setup -- a boy without powers looking for a way to be a hero in a superhuman society -- it breaks away from tradition by exemplifying its messages of tenacity, thrilling and engaging battles and a well rounded cast of characters to follow and love.

In My Hero Academia, MHA for short, the power system is derived from genetics, where a mutation occurred that created an assortment of powers, now known as quirks. Those quirks slowly embed themselves into society over time, mixing with others to create brand new quirks. However, there are still occurrences that leave some people without a quirk, and they often become subjects of ridicule. From the get go, we see Izuku Midoriya being constantly bullied by his classmates and told that he has no

strong probability you will also like its counterpart. While this anime recommendation series is intended for newcomers, it also embeds sneaky ploys to keep even long term anime fans interested.

There will be minor spoilers throughout, however they will be kept to a minimum so that the full journey is left for you to discover and explore on your own.

Demon Slayer Demon Slayer begins with a strong-willed and lovable character, Tanjiro Kamado, experiencing the absolute worst moment of his life. After seeing the massacre of his family, he is forced to turn into a warrior, seeking a cure for his last remaining relative, his sister Nezuko, who was turned into a demon. The two have an encounter with a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, where he is encouraged to fight alongside them in order to avenge his family’s death and cure his sister. During Tanjiro’s journey, he finds himself partnered with two other Demon Slayers, Zenitsu and Inosuke, who will experience significant growth and challenging hardships together. The team’s natural chemistry and sense of humor helps to balance out some of the more melodramatic moments, making each scene very enjoyable to watch.

“To dispel the regrets of those killed, to stop any more victims from appearing, I will relentlessly wield my blade against the Demons and that’s a fact. But I will not trample on the pains of being a Demon. Nor on those who regret their actions. Because Demons were humans... they were humans like me.” -Tanjiro Kamado

While the group goes through the usual hurdles of training and battles, Demon Slayer puts a lot of emphasis on unifying the heroes and the villains. It humanizes its villains by showing who the demons were before their

corruption, how they got like this and what they sacrificed as a result. This level of empathy is carried throughout the show, making Tanjiro pause and consider how some of these demons are just as innocent or in need

of redemption as his sister, Nezuko. It’s a thoughtful detail that adds a certain pain to each of Tanjiro’s victories. It’s a refreshing perspective that helps ground these characters amidst all of the typical shonen action.
