HEIDI ALBERTIRI EDITOR’S NOTE

HEIDI ALBERTIRI EDITOR AND FOUNDER

As we put the finishing touches on the magazine and I look around at my beautiful team busily working away doing what they love and do best, I have an overwhelming feeling of love. My heart fills with joy and my eyes well with tears. I have no idea what I did to deserve and attract the amazing creative beauties that surround me, but somewhere along the way I was blessed and they found me. The team at TLSE is strong, we have created the work environment that doesn’t feel like work, but feels like we are exactly where we are meant to be. This I have to say, is reflected in our Annual. As the year draws to an end and I take another look back at how we have changed, evolved and morphed into the people we are today, it is with a deep sigh of achievement and accomplishment that we share with you the story. We have engaged our family, people we love, brands we love and created the stories that adorn these pages. I must include a special thank you to my gorgeous son Zali, and husband Douk, who have not only assisted in the shoots this year but who have tirelessly picked up the slack of my home life as I have delved into work with reckless abandon.

ZALI ALBERTIRI, ON LOCATION 2017

We have had a ball this year, as we head into only our second year of existence; the year ahead to us looks exciting and plentiful as we continue to work with who we align with and discover on this crazy journey. Thank you for partaking in the story with us, we look forward to adding to the pages until we see you again next year. Tidings, Heidi

“She was beautiful, but not like those girls in the magazines. She was beautiful, for the way she thought. She was beautiful, for that sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved. She was beautiful, for her ability to make other people smile even if she was sad. No, she wasn’t beautiful for something as beautiful as her looks. She was beautiful, deep down to her soul.” F.SCOTT FITZGERALD THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE DAMNED

MAURICE TERZINI FOUNDER: DA MARIA SEMINYAK ICEBERGS DINING ROOM DA ORAZIO PIZZA + PORCHETTA THE DOLPHIN

After bringing regional Italian cuisine to our Bondi shores with the Icebergs Dining room, Maurice Terzini is now expanding his uber cool brand across the shores and has taken on a whole new beachfront location in Bali. After his first visit to Bali in the 80’s, MT is now pairing late night Napoli-style pizzas with disco beats; Maurice knows that the key to any beach party is the perfect combination of food, drinks and tunes - that paired with Bali, we know he has landed in the right place. The design of Da Maria makes you feel like you’ve stepped out into an Amalfi courtyard. Maurice and architect Carl Pickering drew inspiration from the Amalfii coast; through their own interpretations, the beautiful outdoor courtyards that have inspired them on their travels, draw us in and exhalts our senses. Da Maria taps into the party culture of Bali with the ‘Late Night Pizza + Disco’. You can see that Da Maria was inspired by the great buddha bar of the 90’s, and other great beach clubs around the world. The restaurant, like all of his dwellings, appeals to all age groups and you can see the faces, hear the laughter and chorus of conversation amongst all age groups under the one roof. “It’s great to have a beautiful dinner and then have the option to have a dance in a place that is not in a dirty nightclub “ explains Maurice, and with the stylish surrounds engulfing you, you really could be anywhere in the world. Da Maria represents the new breed of holiday restaurants that are blurring the lines between restaurant, club and bar. With a reputation for his handcrafted drink lists, the Bali drink list does not disappoint. Inspired by the low alcohol, Italian style of drinking, it is no surprise that his famous Aperitivos and Spritz feature high on the list, standing alongside an ode to the Icebergs and The Dolphin back home. DM makes its mark with an Americano, No15 and PC1. Haven’t tried them? Then get yourself to The Dolphin or Icebergs for a summer fling asap. A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

When in Bali it is your duty to pay homage to Da Maria; if you fancy more than a pizza, then the pasta’s are absolutely a taste sensation. Working with simple, clean ingredients, the consistent less is more approach to food and the flavours are reminiscent of an Italian nonna’s. With the restaurants situated beside some of the world’s most magnificent beaches, they really are all worth the visit. The beachside atmosphere and summer vibes have you transported to nostalgic summer holidays that live long in the memory bank.

GEORGIE ABAY THE GRACE TALES

GEORGIE ABAY THE GRACE TALES

A site for and about mothers with inspiring style and inspiring stories. The Grace Tales was founded by fashion magazine editor Georgie Abay. Created for the stylish mother, The Grace Tales is the ultimate online destination for multi-tasking mothers of babies, toddlers and tweens, covering everything from motherhood to fashion to beauty to interiors to travel to food. PHOTOGRAPHY JULIE ADAMS

In just over a period of 4 years, The Grace Tales has grown to become one of Australia’s most influential publications for style-conscious mothers. How has this all come to be? Honestly, just a lot of hard work. I inherited my hard-working, determined nature from my mother – she always taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to. The Grace Tales is now four years old and for the first two years, I was still working at VOGUE magazine and juggling two babies (my girls were born 17 months apart). At first, it was just a passion project and something I did when my first born was asleep. I would upload 1-2 stories a week as that was all I could manage. I never started The Grace Tales with the idea of it becoming a business. I created it because there was nothing else like it on the market and it was the kind of content I wanted to read. Slowly, month by month, our audience grew and grew. Let’s just say there have been a lot of late nights but the flexibility I have running my own business is worth it. It’s very rewarding building something yourself from scratch. How has both your fashion and parenting style grown in the process of developing The Grace Tales? My parenting style changes as each phase/life stage passes. I didn’t enjoy the newborn stage at all. My girls were both premature and didn’t sleep for about a year each. They also had terrible reflux and I spent about two years covered in baby vomit. My brother used to joke that the site should be called ‘The Grace Nightmares’, as he’d often pop into our house and find me on the floor wiping up baby vomit or puree, or just looking like a general mess. I’ve just learnt that everything is better after a good night’s sleep. I am constantly working on trying to be a good mother – not a perfect one as perfection doesn’t exist – just a good, well-rounded mum. As for fashion, my style is still the same but I have to admit I did feel a little out of touch after I had kids. I was breastfeeding and suddenly found myself in cardigans and singlets that clipped down for easy access. I’m glad to see that period of my life over! I like to keep my style simple: lots of jeans, shirts, great statement skirts and t-shirts. I don’t like anything too fussy.

GEORGIE ABAY TLSE FIFTEEN / 15

IN CONVERSATION WITH

The Grace Tales has profiled very well-known, stylish mothers from all over the world, including our own, Miranda Kerr and Kate Ritchie. How do you choose the women that will feature in your stories? What are some of your must-reads? Where do I begin? I honestly get so much joy out of every story we publish. Of course, stories on celebrities such as Kate Ritchie (one of the most divine women we’ve ever photographed – funny, smart, down-to-earth, beautiful – talk about the full package!) and Miranda Kerr are a lot of fun, but I also love profiling women who are just doing cool things. Finding women to profile is the easy part – the list is never ending. I’m in awe of mothers – we’re the ultimate multi-taskers. What I love most are honest women who aren’t afraid of showing their weaknesses. This motherhood gig isn’t easy and the more open you are about it, the easier it is. The Grace Tales covers a range of topics on all walks of motherhood: the joys, the challenges and the lessons to be learnt. What does it mean to be a mother in 2017? I often think about when I was a child – life seemed so much slower. Mum certainly wasn’t glued to her iPhone or laptop! These days, women are juggling so much. How can we possibly get any busier? I make a real effort to slow down and not overschedule. I’m a big homebody and love spending the weekends at home with my family. I don’t make lots of social plans and prioritise spending time with those I really value. I also think it’s important as a mother to detox from social media. Too much time on Facebook or Instagram can make you feel depressed and it’s certainly not a real representation of life.

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

What’s next for Georgie and The Grace Tales in 2018? We held our first GRACE TALKS event back in July in Sydney and our next one is on November 17. It’s a really fantastic way to connect with our readers and also very inspiring to hear from such amazing women who talk about navigating career and motherhood. We have plans to hold our events around Australia (and abroad) next year. Our bumper issue of GRACE magazine is out this month – so much work and love has gone into this issue and I’m really proud of it. We’re also working on some exciting product collaborations. And honestly, I’d like to slow down a little as my four-year-old will start school and it’s important to me that I’m there at the school gate to pick her up. My own mum was at the school gate every day - I’ll always remember that.

CHLOE BROOKMAN OLLI ELLA

CHLOE BROOKMAN ONE HALF OF OLLI ELLA

Olli Ella was born in 2009 In London, England. Sisters Chloe and Olivia Brookman set out to create a collection of nursery furniture and baby bedding that was playful, iconic, and above all, beautifully made. Since its launch, Olli Ella has garnered a devoted following, with an ever-expanding collection of pieces for childrens’ spaces, including nursing chairs, rugs, nursery furniture, baby bedding, and much more. We spoke to one half of the sister duo, Chloe, who currently resides in Sydney, whilst Olivia calls London home. Olli Ella is sold worldwide.

Your products are proudly locally sourced, ethically made and focused on organic materials. Why are the materials so important to you? When products are made from natural fibres they not only are more tactile, unique, and earthy, but this also lessens the chance that they will end up in landfills. I love the concept of Hygge, which is about coziness and comfort and to me there is nothing more comforting than snuggling up on a wool rug, with a pair of knitted socks, tea in hand surrounded by woven treasures. What are some of the positives as well as the challenges of running a business with your sister? This is one of my favourite parts of Olli Ella; working with my sis! There are so many positives, from getting to speak to her a thousand times a day (we live on separate continents), having a completely honest sounding board, working with someone that challenges and inspires you - I could say the only challenge is that sometimes we have to make sure that when we speak or hang out that we aren’t just talking shop, and still make room for our sister relationship separate from Olli Ella. What advice would you give to other creatives juggling starting their own business and being a mum? I think that in this day and age the juggle doesn’t just fall on the mother, and that parents co-parent and so the balancing of family life is a combined effort. My advice to creative parents starting their own business would be to get help if you can, to do your best to work around your children’s schedules, and to be prepared to give up “me time”! Your designs are inspired by all the incredible places you’ve travelled. Where is your favourite holiday spot? For creatives like yourselves? For families with little ones? Thank you! We’ve returned a few times to Morocco, both as a family and before children. I love it for the colourful culture, the exquisite cuisine, the opportunity for adventure and the unquestionable beauty of the place - and not to mention the amazing craftsmanship that comes out of this country, from its berber rugs to woven baskets. What Olli Ella product could you not live without? At this moment, my chari bag!

TLSE NINETEEN / 19

IN CONVERSATION WITH

What styling or colour trends are you loving at the moment? I’m loving that the popular styling of homes is moving away from the stark scandi white, which absolutely has its place, but I am also excited to see the incorporation of more natural materials and wood into decor. What product do your kids love the most? My kids are LOVING Playpa by Olli Ella. It just launched in September and keeps them busy for hours.

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE

What’s one must-have piece from your collection for mum, and for bub? For little ones, boys and girls our Holdie House is my pick! It’s great from 1 year up and children of all ages seem to love it. For Mums, you can never go wrong with an extra pair of hands, and so it would have to be our Big Luggy!

CREATE

LOOK ONE To create the first look we used a fan brush and gently painted the paper from one end to the other and left it to dry.

LOOK TWO We used a roller sponge, wet one side with paint and then rolled over the page from one end to the other to create a staggered pattern.

LOOK THREE We used a small brush and finger to spray the paper with dots of white paint - don’t be afraid to get stuck in and no need to worry if it’s not perfect - it adds to the charm. We left all our pieces of paper to dry and then we were ready to get wrapping.

HOW TO STYLE A KIDS ROOM

HOW TO: STYLE A KIDS ROOM CATHERINE MCGOWAN TUBU COLLECTIVE

In these times of excess, especially at Christmas, there is something lovely about keeping things simple to focus on what really matters… Spending time with family and friends. Being English, as a child I was taken to Harrods every year with my sisters to buy one tree ornament each; that magical feeling of choosing one simple thing myself has stayed with me all these years. Have your little ones help decorate their room at Christmas and they will delight in being involved, and the memories will live on with them. The essence of this season is in the beauty of twinkling lights which will immediately transform their space. Get the glow with a few fairy lights in a jar or wrapped around a wreath or branch; you could also display some cute little LED light-up animals. If you’re buying new décor then subtle nods to Christmas such as star shaped cushions or a snowball-esque pompom garland say ‘festive’ without gaudy tinsel and baubles. Add some greenery and a few simple decorations and your child’s room will be tastefully changed-up with a touch of magic that they (and you!) will treasure.

THE COTTON HOUSE SEMINYAK

A striking blue gate gives only a hint of the wonderful oasis that awaits behind it. Reminiscent of and inspired by the great houses of the Caribbean, “The Cotton House Bali” is a welcome retreat amidst the heat and daily buzz of life in Bali. Four separate villas make up the plentiful accommodation and well appointed entertaining areas. The villas have been individually styled with an eclectic mix of tribal rugs and artefacts. Walls are adorned with hand painted birds and frangipanis and a mix of modern, Australian and Asian art. Cool white walls, neutral floors and high pitched ceilings leave visual space for the four poster beds, wicker lounges and batik cushions. Rattan blinds are paired perfectly with vibrantly coloured curtains. White painted french doors open out to the meticulously manicured lawn and inviting wet edge swimming pool. The villa boundaries are filled with wonderful mature bamboo clusters and beautiful yellow and pink frangipani trees. Covered walkways with white pillars and bamboo ceilings connect the villas with ease.

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

“The Cotton House Bali” displays such an exciting mix of cultural and historic styles. It has been impeccably designed with every detail so well considered and deliberate. It really is a wonderful example of how to successfully combine contrasting colours and styles and we have already decided that we never want to leave.

GEORGE & CISCO GORROW THE SLOW

GEORGE & CISCO GORROW THE SLOW

Set on the coast of Canggu, Bali, welcome to The Slow; a multifaceted island stay incorporating boutique accommodation, all-day dining, art, local culture, and interactive retail. A stay at The Slow is an immersive experience; it’s a place to rest your bones, stir your senses, and expand your mind. Below we spoke to George, one half of The Slow duo.

TLSE FIFTY-NINE / 59

THE BALI EDIT

The Slow incorporates traditional elements with a modernist twist; it’s very organic with tropical textures and a warm but minimalist feel. It’s about balance and a clashing of styles. The design is made up of very simple, clean lines, with the use of textures over the basic shape being at the core of the concept and central to the design. The Slow uses an overabundance of treatments and locally sourced and locally made materials to give depth and warmth, and to really secure its relevance to the island.

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

How did The Slow come about, and why? The idea to do a hotel – or rather an island stay and restaurant - had been in the back of my head for a very long time. Canggu is arguably the fastest growing area in Bali, and while it’s undoubtedly bursting with tourists, it also has a really strong community of cool and creative people. It was the perfect spot to build, without a shadow of doubt. There’s a very modern and healthy attitude towards living amongst this community. It’s a peaceful approach to rage against the machine, a new way of thinking and living boosted by an overarching sense of freedom.

What is the philosophy of The Slow? Get here fast, take it slow. Check out of life by checking in. We’re for the young and the non-traditional, we don’t have TV sets or desks just to tick a box. Our rooms and our project generally is designed to reflect what is relevant to our generation, and this constantly evolving island. We are about trying something new, and we are totally fine turning our back on the historical classics to be right here and right now instead. Why Bali? How did you end up here? I have always had a strong connection to Bali, ever since my Dad brought me here to surf Ulluwatu when I was about 14. I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot during my life, and I always wondered if somewhere in the world would finally say “stop here, call me home.” Bali did that a while back now, and to this day it’s the only spot that ever has. Funnily enough I then fell in love here, and it’s the place that I asked my now wife of ten years to marry me. After that we moved to NYC for a while, before realising Bali was everything we wanted.

SIXTY / 60

GEORGE & CISCO GORROW THE SLOW

What was life like before The Slow, and how has life changed since the launch? I’ll be honest, it was a little more relaxing! I was in a semi-retirement; surfing, relaxing, watching grass grow, being a little recluse at times. We were practising the art of not being busy, it made sense at the time and felt right. Then The Slow came along and all of a sudden we had our own cute Balinese version of Faulty Towers. It’s good to get creative again and try something new, and it came along at a really great time. The project embraced all the things my wife and I had been doing in our careers, so the combination is keeping it interesting, as is the chance to work alongside some really great people.

We fell in love with The Slow, their owners, and the ethos of the place - not to mention the interiors. For more on The Slow, see our earlier Edit at www.thelifestyleedit.com.au.

What challenges do you face in managing a business in Bali; and any advice to others thinking of making the sea change? Wow, there’s plenty, but they are everywhere really. We’re finding it so interesting to navigate the complexities of it. All I can say is: Get a great advisor to help guide you, and be respectful to the locals, and then everything should work out fine. Enjoy the ride. And don’t forget the alternative is what pushed you to the island in the first place.

SKYE AND MARCUS DELLA SANTA SLAB INTERIORS

SKYE AND MARCUS DELLA SANTA SLAB INTERIORS, BALI

Slab Interiors is a unique designer and builder of concrete pottery. Founded at the foothills of Bali’s Volcanoes, their pottery is crafted with volcanic sand and reinforced with the fibre of coconut husks. Inspired by ancient techniques, their handcraft is accompanied by Balinese blessings; a certain magic from the Island of the Gods goes into each and every pot.

Who inspires you - in a business sense and also in a design sense? [SKYE] Whilst living in Bali we have met so many truly successful people. Not just in the sense of having a great business and making good money. But people who have seemed to conquer one of the hardest feats which is having an amazing business that they are truly passionate about, and working this business into a healthy work/life balance. There are some amazing artists that live in Bali that we feel we can draw so much inspiration from. What are your top tips for keeping both succulents and leafy plants healthy (and alive)? My biggest tip and the one that people often forget is not to overwater. We often find this is the biggest killer of these beautiful plants. Also the thicker the leaf on the succulent the less water it needs. Another one is to make sure they have a really good drainage system. All of our planters come with a small hole for drainage. Whilst succulents love a soaking they cannot be sitting in water. What trends are you loving at the moment? I am just loving that indoor plants are making a huge comeback. Having your house adorned with as many beautiful living, breathing and luscious green plants is now completely on point! Not only are plants a cost effective way of brightening up a space, they give us so much back by purifying our air, improving our health and increasing humidity in the air which helps our respiratory systems. For interior colours I am just loving the more smokier colour pallets that are trending right now. I love the beautiful dusty pinks, storm blues and olive greens! These colours pair so well with our raw, polished concrete bases. How do you split your time between Australia and Bali? We don’t often visit the motherland these days. We have an amazing International Sales team which means that we get to spend the majority of our time in Bali creating, working and enjoying maximum family time. How do two Australian’s start a ceramics business in Bali? Purely out of a lack of product in the market. There are so many amazing handicrafts, in Bali however when we moved into our new villa and needed to add some greenery inside, the options were so limited.

TLSE SIXTY-FIVE / 65

THE BALI EDIT

We wanted some super cool concrete planters and the only options we could find were so daggy and old fashioned. This is what sparked us to start making our own. Before we knew it we had friends putting in orders, then friends of friends. It all seemed to grow very organically. Do you remember your first visit to Bali? Yes. It was about 2 years before we moved here. It’s funny as we had such a great time but we never thought whilst holidaying here, of it being a place we wanted to move to. It wasn’t until a few years later one day we just realised that the Australian daily grind was not working for us anymore. When we started researching ideas of where we could go or how we could change our lifestyle, Bali just seemed like the perfect fit.

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE

Have you always worked in a creative field? Marcus has worked with concrete for the past 25 years now. However in saying that, his background was in large scale commercial construction so while he knew and understood concrete very well, scaling his skills into something so small and handcrafted was an adjustment. Whilst I always love creating and painting, I had come from a very structured corporate financial background. It has been so nice to reignite this passion of mine and start letting those creative juices flow once again.

SHANE THOMPSON AFTERNOONS WITH ALBERT

SHANE THOMPSON AFTERNOONS WITH ALBERT STYLING HEIDI ALBERTIRI PHOTOGRAPHY HELOISE LOVE

“What gets us out of bed every morning at Afternoons with Albert, is to help you (and the rest of the world) to find adventure and enjoyment in each moment, to change the way you interact with the everyday. Products should fit your lifestyle – not the other way around. We are passionate about crafted designs and aesthetic products. Like you, we’re excited by function and thoughtful designs that make the most of all those little moments in life.” - Shane Thompson,

Afternoons With Albert (AWA) took off from a successful Kickstarter campaign launched in November 2015, where the Cord Roll was completely funded within 11 hours. Can you tell us about AWA, the Cord Roll and how it all came into fruition? As a child I spent Sunday afternoons with my grandfather (Albert) in his shed. He was an avid carpenter and tinkerer. I would pass him tools and do the small jobs, eventually graduating to making stuff of my own, with his guidance, for the family home. After the work was done we would retire to the garden and eat cake and drink tea, lovingly prepared by Nanna. This memory forms the basis for the name of the label. After he passed, I was given all his tools, and set them up in a shed of my own. It was a place where I would go to get lost in ‘making’. I would dream up designs, then go create them. Seeing them come to life was amazing, and as a kid very liberating. This background, coupled with my inquisitive nature means that I always have to know how something works – I am forever interested in the design of functional, utalitarian things. When I became an international pilot for QANTAS at 25, I was suddenly exposed to an entire world of design (pun intended). Having the globe as inspiration, and a jet to access it all has only strengthened my interest and passion in the design space.

TLSE SEVENTY-FIVE / 75

I have always loved music, and am often transported to another time and place when I hear a certain song. Entire periods of my life can be characterized by particular albums – my late 20’s were Hot Fuss by The Killers, and Sex on Fire by Kings Of Leon, for example. One of my favorite things on earth is to get lost in a new city, listening to music …just walking around for hours, in and out of coffee shops, down lanes, talking to strangers. But it struck me that I never remembered to take my charging cable – so my phone would always run flat before I was finished exploring. Even worse, stuffing my earphones into my pockets would always produce a horrible mess, and I found I was taking endless amounts of time untangling these things, when all I wanted to do was be in the moment and enjoy wherever I was. So I guess I had a ‘there must be a better way’ moment, and begun experimenting. My creative process is incredibly authentic, in that it’s not forced – if I don’t like a design then I can’t workshop it. But when I do resonate with something, it becomes part of me, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I know I am ready to put the pen down and bring the tools out when I can see the design in my head in 3 dimensions, I can turn it around, up and down and inside out, and look at it from every angle – that’s when I know I’ve got something. The Cord Roll was born like this. The Cord Roll is an innovative and stylish solution to keeping cords, cables and other necessities at bay. How do you approach design, and is it a reflection of your life and style? I am an idealist in many ways. I am inspired by the cities I visit, the world around me - and the everyday things that should be better. Lazy, thoughtless design frustrates the hell out of me. When I interact with products and processes that are harder and less intuitive than they need to be, my mind starts to wander and dream up ways to get from A to B faster, with a more pleasant experience, culminating in a better result.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

From your website to Instagram, there is such a cohesion in the AWA brand image and message. How do you manage marketing, customer service and all the other responsibilities of a start-up business? Great question. The answer is passion, and authenticity. Passion gives me the energy to ‘do all the things’ – when you really care about something (or someone), there is nothing you wouldn’t do, nothing is too hard, energy flows. The cohesion you see/feel when interacting with the brand is the authenticity that is a natural by product of working within the realm of your passion. It’s honest, because it comes from a central place. It’s not fragmented by multiple desires, it’s aligned.

Born from my training as a pilot, my design thinking is focused on simplicity and logic. As pilots, we are taught to simplify things as much as we can in order to give ourselves the brain capacity to deal with an emergency should it occur. So my approach to design absolutely reflects my life, my experiences, both good and bad. It has to be part of you – this breeds simplicity, authenticity and purity. Often when something is over-engineered, it’s hard to use, or it has multiple points of failure. Over-engineering is as result of design that doesn’t come from the heart. Too many band-aids applied to make up for the lack of end to end design. Further, my approach to design has been heavily influenced by my Grandfather Albert. He taught me principles, rather than methods. He taught to me to think outside the box - to challenge myself to ask “how”, rather than to accept the way things were. He changed my thinking from “it can’t” to “what if it could”.

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

The AWA Instagram page is a wanderluster’s dream, where you’ll see snaps of beautiful places, from Paris to New York. What are the most memorable places that you’ve been to, and why? All the destinations are all incredible for their own reason – both in terms of the cities themselves, and the routes we fly to get there … seeing the Antarctic icebergs on the African route, breakfast over the mountains of Afghanistan on the London Route, the Philippine islands on the way to Hong Kong, and the deep, frozen south coast of South America is unlike anything you can imagine. I often answer this question by saying “If QANTAS made me pick one single destination to fly to for the rest of my career, it would be London. I love the familiarity of London, but mostly the fact that within 3 hours you can either be in Morocco drinking peppermint tea, or experiencing the freezing depths of St Petersburg in Russia”.

AWA has received positive reception, and had successful debuts at The Finders Keepers markets this year. What’s next for Shane Thompson and AWA in 2018? The best advice that was given to me when starting the brand was: Rule #1 is focus Rule #2 is focus Rule #3 is focus

One day we needed a certain type of hinge to make a cupboard open and shut a certain way. A trip to the local hardware store and nothing – the hinge didn’t exist. I thought we were beaten, that it couldn’t be done. But in the time taken to drink a hot of cup of tea, the shade of a fern, some paper blown clear of sawdust and a thick carpenters pencil, we had a new hinge drawn up … and made that afternoon. And Nana had a place to put her broom – in an impossible spot that would never have made sense if not for the hinge. He loved her so much, I remember so clearly the delight in his face as he opened and shut the little cupboard in front of Nanna at the end of that day. To have changed her ‘everyday’ in such a small but impactful manner gave him his reason for being.

The most exciting thing in the world for me is a shiny new product idea. Getting lost in the possibilities of a new design is intoxicating for me. What’s the most succinct way to describe what it does? What other problems can it solve easily? How will I package it? I can go down these roads for hours on end. This is a long winded way of saying the next 12 months is mostly about behind the scenes stuff – building the foundation of the brand and the business. Hiring staff, systemizing things that need systemizing, building the foundations of the house. The plan is to run another Kickstarter in the second half of 2018 … but I just have to decide which product is going to be the fruit of that…

I knew then the power of the small things, the minutia that people often overlook – that when done right can have such a huge impact. Everyone always says ‘it’s the little things in life” …

AMBER MOLNAR & KAREN ENIS ME AND AMBER

AMBER MOLNAR AND KAREN ENIS ME & AMBER STYLING HEIDI ALBERTIRI PHOTOGRAPHY HELOISE LOVE

Me and Amber is a graphic design studio based in Sydney, Australia. With a passion for timeless design and typography, the pair create simple and beautiful screenprinted products that help people make meaningful connections in a digital age. Each greeting card in their collection is screenprinted by hand, one by one, in their Sydney studio. Their love of this process gives each card a tactile, bold and unique quality. Me and Amber was born in 2004, with best friends Karen (right) and Amber (left) at the helm. With a clear passion for design and typography, can you tell us the ‘ah-huh’ moment that led to the creation of your first card collection, and how it came about. To be perfectly honest – and we wish there was a better story to tell – there was no definitive light bulb moment. We have always appreciated and treasured receiving hand written cards, and both have a collection that we just can’t part with. Greeting cards are special in their ability to connect people, capture memories, share feelings and pour your heart out (if you want to!). Amber’s mum was a huge greeting card writer – often she’d write them for absolutely no reason at all. You always felt so special receiving one, and it was such a beautiful sentiment, getting a card when it wasn’t even your birthday! With your screen printed designs helping people make meaningful connections in a digital age, your recent expansion into notebooks and alphabet art has been a hit. How do you see Me and Amber growing further in the coming years? We would love to do more custom product design work for stores, galleries and other clients. We’ve been lucky enough to design some custom products for brands such as T2, Bonds and the National Portrait Gallery. This is something we really get a kick out of. We are both graphic designers and really enjoy designing for clients, not just our own brand. We’d also like to expand into the international market. We recently took on our first US stockist, in Brooklyn NY, and are really excited that our cards are doing well there. This has started more than one conversation about doing an international trade show, or a ‘working holiday’. Friendship and business….everyone’s curious! Can you tell us more about yourselves and how you make your partnership both personal and business - so solid, and clearly so successful. Very true! We often get asked about this, as it is supposedly the greatest no-no in business. For us, it just makes sense and we are super lucky that it works so well. We have known each other since we were five years old, so obviously our friendship has a very solid foundation and we know each other inside out! We’ve spent sooo much time together through primary school, high school, uni (yep, we studied the same course and even collaborated on our major project!), worked at the same bar in Chinatown, travelled together and now we’ve been in business for 13 years… and we still love hanging out! In all that time, through friendship and partnership, we’ve only ever had very minor issues…pretty hard to believe! We are both quite easygoing in nature, which must help a fair bit!

We also both really love and believe in what we do. Like in any business or friendship, we have had countless ups and downs, but at the end of the day, we’re doing something that we are passionate about, and enjoy (almost!) every day. A trip to Tokyo opened us up to a whole new world of stationery, and inspired us to create our own greeting cards. The first cards we made were laborious one of a kind artworks. They were hand stitched, hand drawn, photocopied and collaged. We were lucky enough that our favourite design bookstore decided to stock these labours of love and, much to our surprise, they sold. Obviously we couldn’t keep making such painstakingly detailed cards, so by experimenting with new techniques, we discovered that screenprinting was our perfect medium. It’s funny, neither of us had ever screenprinted before, but we loved it instantly. It has a rawness and a tactile feel that still shows the mark of the maker, yet is relatively easy to produce multiples. Our first collection of hand screenprinted greeting cards soon followed. Fast forward 13 years, now with an established client base and brand reputation, how has the Me and Amber design studio evolved? In some ways Me and Amber has evolved a lot, but in other ways not at all! It is still just the two of us, working from our home studios, wearing all the hats that running a small business entails. As far as our product range goes, we started with greeting cards and over the years introduced lots of different products, from linen cushions to organic cotton t-shirts. These products were fun to create but our love of paper and screenprinting everything ourselves prevailed, and we have ended up coming back to where it all began...greeting cards and paper goods! We still hand screenprint our work from home, however, our processes are now much more streamlined. Sometimes the simplest progression takes us a while to achieve... more often than we’d like to admit, after doing something a certain way for waaay too long, the penny drops and we look at each other and burst into hysterics at our stupidity! Our production method has also evolved, which has in turn influenced our design style. After 11 years of solely hand cutting stencils for our greeting cards, we now use the photographic technique for one of our ranges. This method has allowed us far more creative freedom, enabling us to produce much more illustrative, detailed designs... we still keep our designs pretty simple though! AHN NGUYEN AUSTRALIAN ARTIST

TLSE Art Contributor, Kate Swinson of lifestyle and art label Native Swinson, shares with us her interview and musings with Ahn. Ahn lives and paints on Sydney’s South Coast, with her partner and four children. Says Ahn, “My work is inspired by life; daily moments, human activity, small observations. Often, I am also inspired by other art - the composition in a photograph, a line of prose or poetry, a still from a film.”

[KATE] Looking at the paintings of Anh Nguyen I am immersed in loose beautiful brushstrokes creating scenes I know, places I am familiar with, things I feel I have experienced. But, I don’t know these places, this garden, these people. This is the magic of Anh’s work, it has a sense of an old friend. As a child Anh loved to draw and paint, she was a keeper of sketch books and a writer of poems, busily documenting her world and her experience in it. Today, her artwork appears to be a grown-up extension of these childhood sketchbooks. Her paintings could be pages torn from a visual diary, personal daily reflections in paint. Impressively Anh, as yet, has never been to art school instead she experienced a wave of creativity when she become a mother. Invigorated by the change of pace in her daily routine and influenced by examining her world in a new way. Anh found herself with the desire to remember moments in time, perhaps the sense of time passing has greater force as you see babies grow and change so quickly. As a mother and primary carer, Anh feels she has more time to contemplate and observe her immediate world, although conversely she confesses she also has less time as anyone with experience with young children will understand For some women Motherhood can be a catalyst of determination to follow ones true passions. Many women I have spoken to talk of gaining a redefined sense of focus after they became mothers, I know for me this has been the way. Perhaps this is partly because a mentoring role is placed upon women by the very nature of motherhood, to show your children what can be done. For me, the importance of creativity is paramount. Anh paints with her instinct.

When an artistic mind is at home with small children beauty can be seen in the most rudimentary of places. The light falling across the kitchen bench or the patterns the spilled milk forms after it has been knocked over by a tired toddler. Beauty and fascination are everywhere. Anh can see these ephemeral personally meaningful points in time. It might be the children in a particularly resonating moment that becomes captured in her minds eye and then later translates onto her canvas.

The iconic Margaret Preston and brilliant Grace Cossington Smith both wonderful Austalian painters of their time have influenced Anh’s work as they have many others. Anh has the same immediate domestic influences, she too paints interiors peeking out into exterior gardens and beautiful still life configurations that resonate intimacy within the domestic setting.

Although Anh’s work is a narration of the home and its inhabitants, it is a contemporary one that I don’t interpret as a gendered women’s world of women’s work but rather the world of a young growing family and a parent painting amongst it all. But, honestly there are 4 children in her tribe, two that are babies. She and her husband are totally outnumbered! When can she possibly find a quiet moment to paint? Who knows, but she does and she appears to be quite prolific. She is practical and works on a small scale so the work is able to be finished in a couple of sittings. This she likes to do in peaceful quiet, if possible.

It is understandable that her subject matter consists of those that are on hand, the children, the home, the husband, the surrounding garden, the beach. There is so much fodder in the life of a large family planted in such an idyllic landscape. There are infinite stories to tell.

Watching her children running wild on the beach, Anh is more at home observing the waves than swimming in the ocean. From the sand she can see the light moving across the undulating ocean, the endless sea merging with the endless sky together collaborating in an emotive display of infinite mood and colour. 10. At the beach I’ve always thought the concept of the muse striking was one for a more time luxurious life than mine. Anh also never sits waiting for the muse to strike, and has many sketches on the back of grocery receipts and an iPhone full of photos that she has snapped, capturing a moment that needs to be remembered in paint later.

Social media is a wonderful tool to build community and access inspiration. Instagram has provided Anh with her ‘Art people’. It has been a positive force, connecting her with an audience and other painters and makers. The lovely art curator and writer Amber Creswell Bell recently curated Anh’s first group show; she found Anh whilst wandering about on Instagram, magic!

Looking into the near future Anh is continuing to set herself challenges of scale and technique, admirably home schooling her own art education through determination and the natural force of the compulsive maker. She has some wonderful projects in the works. A collaboration with a ceramicist, painting on clay and another collaboration with a fashion label. I’m sure both these projects will have the open arms and freshness of her paintings. What does Christmas bring to this busy household of six? Obviously a holiday at home, laughing, running and yelling very loudly on the beach.

SEASCAPE BEYOND THE SEA

As time goes by and our lives become more complicated and busy, it’s nice to look forward to summer holidays with family and friends. As we step into another Christmas, with expectations and family politics ahead, we decided to keep our Christmas gatherings simple this year. We made it about our favourite people, delicious food, but most of all about spending time together by the sea to recharge and reboot. Our team packed up and headed to one of our favourite places, Pearl Beach. Nostalgic games of cricket on the beach, synonymous with a good old Aussie Christmas, sun on your face, long walks on the beach collecting shells until the sun goes down. We’ve captured what that means to us. We show you how to cook the perfect Pescatarian Christmas feast, and a beautiful effortless setting that will have the neighbours peeking over the fence begging for an invite.

EAT WITH DOUK KONSTANTARAS

Friends and family always seem to end up at our place for dinner, reaping the rewards of my Greek Husband’s cooking abilities. With a bit of nepotism thrown into this years mix, we thought it essential to share with you the food that warms our heart, hypnotises the tastebuds and that has become tradition in our household. Making the choice some time ago to forgo meat in our diet, our love of seafood shines through these recipes. When shopping for seafood we are just as concious about where it comes from, and we try to purchase ethically caught where possible; a little effort to follow this goes a long way. So without further adue, I introduce you to Douk’s Seafood Feast, with a touch of Greek Love on the side.

There’s nothing better it seems, than sharing food with loved ones over the festive season. Nothing better however, than if you were to all meet in the kitchen, kids in tow, slicing, baking and decorating in unity. It’s ritualistic and very often nostalgic, as generations come together in the heart of the home, to create meals that quite simply, come from the heart. TLSE Food Contributor Helen, shares with us her recipes for just that; recipes to get the family involved in, both in creating and in devouring. These are sure to go down a treat!

COCONUT MONKEY BREAD

INGREDIENTS 1 cup full cream milk, lukewarm 1/3 cup water, lukewarm 1/4 cup white caster sugar 2 1/2teaspoons active dried yeast 2 cups plain (all-purpose) flour 1 1/2cups white spelt flour 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamon 1 large egg, lightly beaten 4 tablespoons (60g) softened unsalted butter, divided in half

COCONUT COATING 100g unsalted butter 3/4cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup coconut sugar 1/3 cup shredded coconut, plus a little extra for sprinkling on top to serve 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom 2 tablespoons shredded coconut, toasted, to serve

METHOD COMBINE the warm milk and water with the white caster sugar and yeast and stir with a fork until the yeast dissolves. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes until the yeast is activated and the mixture becomes foamy. PLACE the flours, salt and cardamon in a large bowl and lightly mix with a butter knife. Make a well in the centre and add the lightly beaten egg, two tablespoons unsalted butter (reserve the other two tablespoons to grease your tin) and the yeast mixture. Cut through the mixture with the knife until the dough starts to come together and then tip it all onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is no longer sticky and has a lovely smooth elastic appearance. Note that it is meant to be a little sticky however if it is too wet add 1 teaspoon of flour extra at a time. Form it into a neat ball, place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover the dough with plastic wrap (making sure the wrap is resting on the dough itself yet is really loose on top to allow the dough to rise), and then cover the bowl with a clean dishtowel. As with most other breads, let the dough rise in a warm, draught-free environment for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size. GREASE a 10 inch bundt tin with the remaining two tablespoons of butter, using your fingers to make sure you grease every single little part of the tin. Set aside. WHILE waiting for the bread to rise, place the 100g unsalted butter in a small saucepan over a medium heat and stir frequently until the milk solids have disappeared and the butter has browned and taken a nutty fragrance. Set aside. IN a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, coconut sugar, shredded coconut, vanilla bean paste and ground cardamom until they are all incorporated. Set aside. WHEN the dough has finished rising, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it out into a 25cm x 25cm square. Use a pizza wheel or dough scraper, cut the dough into 36 pieces. Working with a few pieces at a time, roll each piece of dough into a rough ball, then roll each one in the browned butter and then roll in the coconut mixture. Layer the dough balls into the bundt tin so that they fit snugly. Repeat with the remaining dough balls. COVER the bundt tin with another greased plastic wrap and tea towel and allow to rise again for about an hour. PREHEAT the oven to 170C (fan forced is the best oven option to use if you have that option) and position a rack in the lower half of the oven. ONCE the bread has finished rising, place into the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes or until the top is dark and caramelised and the sugar is bubbling around the edges. Cool the bread in the pan for 5 minutes before turning out onto a serving plate. Cool for another 10 minutes before sprinkling with the extra shredded coconut (if desired) before serving.

PAVLOVA WREATH

INGREDIENTS MERINGUE 4 egg whites, at room temperature 1 cup white caster sugar 2 teaspoons cornflour, sifted 1 teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste VANILLA WHIPPED CREAM 2 cups thickened cream, cold 3 tablespoons icing sugar mixture, sifted 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 250g fresh raspberries 2 fresh figs, each cut into 8 wedges

A CURATION OF LIFE + STYLE TLSE

METHOD TO make the meringue, outline a 22cm circle on a large piece of baking paper and then a smaller 13cm diameter circle within the larger circle. This will give you an outline of the wreath you will create. Turn the paper upside down on a baking tray and set aside. Double check your stand mixer bowl and whisk attachment are absolutely clean, dry and free from any traces of grease in order for the meringue to get the maximum volume. SET the oven rack in the middle and preheat the oven to 120C for a fan forced oven. TO make the meringue, place the egg whites in the bowl of your stand mixer and whisk until firm peaks have just formed. Add the cup of caster sugar, one teaspoon at a time, whisking well between each addition until the mixture is thick and glossy. ADD the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla paste and whisk until it has just combined. Place large dollops of meringue within the circle markings on the baking paper to make the wreath, making sure the dollops just touch each other. Use a spatula to smooth down the surface a little. PLACE the meringue in the oven for 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 1/2 hours or until it is lovely and dry and you are able to easily lift it off the paper without it sticking. Turn off the oven and leave the oven door ajar (I like to place a wooden spoon in the door to make sure it doesn’t open too much) for at least 3 hours or until the meringue is completely cold. WHEN it’s time to serve the pavlova, make the vanilla whipped cream. Combine the chilled cream, icing sugar and vanilla paste in the bowl of your stand mixer and beat on a medium-high speed until soft peaks form and it holds its shape. Be careful at this stage as the cream goes from ready to overbeaten in seconds. TO assemble the cake, place the pavlova wreath on its serving plate. Place the whipped cream on top of the wreath and then top with the fresh raspberries and figs. Serve immediately.

BUTTERMILK WAFFLES WITH BANANAS AND BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE

INGREDIENTS BUTTERMILK WAFFLES 2 cups plain (all-purpose) flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten, at room temperature 2 cups buttermilk, at room temperature 50g unsalted butter, melted and cooled 1 teaspoon vanilla extract BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2/3 cup pouring cream 50g unsalted butter, cubed 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 250g fresh raspberries 2 fresh figs, each cut into 8 wedges 3 bananas, cut diagonally into 2cm slices, to serve Vanilla ice cream, to serve (if desired)

METHOD TO make the butterscotch sauce, combine all the ingredients in a medium heavy based saucepan and stir over medium heat until well combined. Increase the heat to high and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, and stirring often, for 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove the pan from the heat and set TO make the waffles, sift the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the sugar and whisk to combine. NEXT, whisk in the eggs, buttermilk, butter and vanilla extract until it is HEAT the waffle maker (We used the Breville Smart Waffle) and set it to a “Belgian” or “buttermilk” setting if your machine has one. STAR MELOMAKARONA

INGREDIENTS 1 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup white caster sugar 1 cup orange juice (preferably freshly squeezed) 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 4 -5 cups plain (all-purpose) flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts 1 cup warmed honey, to serve

METHOD PREHEAT oven to 180C (or 160C for a fan forced oven). Grease and line 2-3 oven trays (depending on how many different sized stars you will be cutting) and put to the side. BEAT oil and sugar on a medium speed in a stand mixer until the mixture starts going white, approximately 4 minutes. ADD juice, cinnamon and cloves to mixture and beat well. IN the meantime, mix the 1/2 cup walnuts, flour and baking powder in a bowl. Slowly add 4 cups to the mixture using the stand mixer. Turn the machine off and test the dough with your fingers. If it sticks to your hands, add 1/2 cup flour and test again. If it is still sticky, add the next 1/2 cup flour (I normally do have to use the whole 5 cups but it really depends on the brand of flour you use). Once you have added all the flour, check the dough again – if it is still loose, sticks to your hands or can’t be rolled into a ball add 1 tablespoon of flour at a time until it is the desired consistency. If you decide it is too tight add a little more juice. PAT the dough into a square about 30cm x 30cm and about half an inch (1.5cm) high. Using different size star cookie cutters (I used three different sizes), cut the dough into stars and place them onto the oven trays. For ease of baking, try use a different tray for each size as the larger biscuits will take a little longer to bake than the smaller biscuits. BEFORE placing them in the oven, grab a fork and lightly press down on each cookie to leave indents on the top. Continue to reroll and repat the dough into squares about half an inch thick and keep cutting stars until you have used all the dough up…it’s just too good to waste! POP the trays into the oven and bake the small stars for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Allow the medium stars to bake for 25 minutes and the larger stars for about 30 minutes. Allow them to cool completely on the trays. TO serve, place the star melomakarona on a plate and generously drizzle over the warmed honey. MAKES AROUND 40 BISCUITS

WHITE CHOCOLATE PANNA COTTA WITH ROASTED STRAWBERRIES

INGREDIENTS 200g quality eating white chocolate, broken into small pieces 1 cup full cream milk 1 cup quality full fat vanilla yoghurt 1 cup thickened cream 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste 500g fresh strawberries, hull removed and quartered 2 tablespoons Cointreau (or coconut syrup if you would like the dessert non-alcoholic) 1 tablespoon white caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

METHOD PLACE the gelatine leaves in a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes. IN the meantime, heat the chocolate and milk in a medium saucepan over a medium heat, whisking constantly. Allow to come to a simmer and then remove from the heat. REMOVE the gelatine leaves from the water, squeeze well to remove the excess water and then place in the saucepan with the milk. Whisk well until the leaves have dissolved. Strain into a medium sized clean bowl. ADD the yoghurt, cream and vanilla to the milk mixture and whisk well to combine. DIVIDE the mixture into individual moulds/ pots/ glasses and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. IN the meantime, to prepare the strawberries, preheat the oven to 180C. PLACE the fresh fruit, Cointreau (or coconut syrup), sugar and vanilla bean paste in a lined medium baking tray. Toss well to combine and then pop the tray into the oven to roast, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until the fruit has softened and a lovely syrup has formed in the bottom of the pan. ALLOW to cool and then chill in the fridge until you are ready to serve. IF you have used moulds, remove the panna cotta from the moulds by dipping the mould into hot water (taking care that no water comes into contact with the panna cotta) and then use a knife to gently run around the inside of the mould. Turn upside down onto its serving plate and gently jiggle until the panna cotta comes free. TO serve, place a few strawberries and drizzle a little syrup on top of a panna cotta. Repeat with the other panna cotta and serve immediately. SERVES 6
