“Our couches were not welcoming at all, and we wanted to create a warm environment”

hen the owners of this property decided to renovate, the main aim was to modernise the old home. “Our home was very dated; we decided it needed to look more modern and appealing,” says the home owner. The bathroom was tackled first, with the idea of creating an open-plan retreat. This was achieved by installing a stand-alone bathtub and a frameless double shower. High-gloss tiles and a chandelier

BELOW: Indoni Interiors combined neutral hues with blue, orange and wood to make the living room warm and inviting. For a contemporary look, the designer added a geometricprint rug and a wrought-iron coffee table and side tables. A centrepiece of Maasai beads, bought by the home owner in Zanzibar, brings the scheme together.

added to the modern, luxurious look. For much-needed natural light, one of the walls was broken down and a corner window inserted. “Our initial bathroom was quite dark, and we also wanted our bathroom to be much bigger,” adds the home owner. For the man of the house, a neutral fabric was chosen, with an orange trim and wood finish, to achieve a contemporary look. For the lady of the house, a navy fabric added the warmth she was looking for. These colours worked well with the iconic table piece, made of Maasai beadwork, which was purchased during a visit to Zanzibar.

RIGHT: In keeping with the home owner’s vision of creating a modern home, Eigenart Euro Kitchens designed and installed a high-tech kitchen that includes integrated appliances. The company set out to ensure that the design was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, with metallic khaki high-gloss foil-wrap finishes and Pro Quartz speckle worktops.

TOP: Elite Showers installed the 8mm clear toughened safety glass that was used to create the frameless double-door shower enclosure. The home owner wanted an aesthetically pleasing shower that would complement the rest of the bathroom, and make the transition between the shower and bathtub seamless.

The house features a number of African beadwork pieces that have been framed to adorn the walls around the house, in addition to wooden sculptures, to make this a contemporary African home. !
