DAVIES & SCOULLER 22ND March – 28th April
Lime Tree An Ealdhain Fort William
Davies & Scouller 22nd March – 28th April 2014
The Lime Tree An Ealdhain Gallery, Fort William is very pleased to bring such high quality art to the Highlands in the form of our Davies & Scouller exhibition.
This exhibition showcases paintings by Douglas Davies RSW and Glen Scouller RSW RGI in a range of landscape and still life influenced by Scottish landscapes and trips to the continent.
Davies and Scouller present varying approaches in terms of colour, form, subject matter and stylistic approach - where Glen adopts vivid brushstrokes and a high colour palette, Douglas tends to focus on the ‘abstract’ rather than the works subject matter.
Douglas Davies RSW
Douglas Davies RSW has lived and worked in The Scottish Borders for over 30 years. Having studied Ceramics and Glass Design at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating 1966-70, Douglas went on to take a postgraduate Scholarship in ceramics which took him on a Travelling Scholarship to Italy. He then went on to get his teaching degree and began lecturing in Ceramics at Glasgow School of Art from 1973-86, following on to become a full time Potter and Painter and then concentrating on painting soon after. In 2000 he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW). No matter what the season, his surroundings are of constant inspiration as are frequent visits to south Brittany and the Mediterranean coasts of France and Spain. In 2007 Douglas was awarded ‘Artist in Residency’ in Collioure, France, providing him with a totally different palette and of course that special quality of light. Douglas works from sketchbooks initially giving him the information for the 'start' of a painting. From one sketch can come several paintings or from several sketches only one painting. The translation from sketch to painting allows him scope for experimentation and development with colour, line and form which can lead to an element of risk or edge to creep in thus eliminating some of the often irrelevant information contained in an 'on the spot' sketch. To embark on a day’s painting with a large sheet of paper, bristling brushes and good light, is always an exciting prospect if not a slightly apprehensive one as the end result could end up in the bin or with luck, in a frame. The 'don't know' element 'the sleeping surprise' (as Robin Philipson called it) is always there, the trick is to recognise it. – Douglas Davies RSW The paintings in his exhibition alongside fellow RSW and friend, Glen Scouller, depict the landscapes and seascapes of the Scottish Borders. Natural elements such as land, sea and sky boast a formidable influence throughout these works, coming to life as an impression rather than an impressionistic style. In terms of technique, Douglas has used acrylic with soluble pencils allowing him to create these ‘impressions’ that focus on the abstract, rather than the subject matter.
