Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the July edition of your Hucclecote Link. At last we seem to be seeing some nice weather - long may it continue! It’s the time of year when we all start thinking about our Summer holidays. Whether we are staying in the UK or are lucky enough to be heading abroad, you may be thinking now is the time when you would like to loose those few extra pounds. To help you get ready we have a few local companies that could help, whether it’s joining local Zumba classes, or taking advantage of a VIP Pass at Spirit Health Club, you can find all the companies on our index on page 34. Do you fancy winning yourself a £20 M&S voucher? Well to help continue the success of the Hucclecote Link, we are always on the look out for new businesses that we can help to grow in this area, and so if you know of someone who owns a business and might benefit of advertising with us, send them our way and if they decide to advertise, then there’s £20 on it’s way to you, it’s a win win situation, see our advert on page 24. Local charity The James Hopkins Trust are holding their Summer Fate on 8th July, why not pop along, for a fun family day out, and help raise some money for them at the same time, more details on page 31. Also remember if you are looking to become part of the community we have plenty of local clubs you can join, read more about them on page 32 & 33. Congratulations to Shelia Tombs , for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great month .... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Removing wall tiles Removing wall tiles can be an arduous task depending on the original adhesive used. Before you start ensure that any sanitary ware is protected from scratching from falling tiles. Using a bolster line it up to the edge of the tile at an angle as close to the wall as possible and strike it with a hammer. You will probably find the first few tiles to be the hardest to remove. If standard adhesive was originally used the tiles should come away fairly easily from a solid wall, any excess adhesive stuck to the wall should be removed with a scraper. If the wall is made of plasterboard be prepared to have to re-board the wall as the adhesive may well damage the wall. In some cases it is just easier to rip down the plasterboard and renew it. Work your way around the tiles chipping from the edges until all the tiles are removed. Bear in mind small fragments will fly off so gloves and safety glasses are a must. If the tiles were originally fitted with a cement-based adhesive, then be prepared to spend a lot of time to remove them, and probably allow to replaster the walls afterwards. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club We recently had our Garden Club Trip this year to Powis Castle and Gardens, although only just over the Welsh border it was quite a long journey, but well worth it. This National Trust property which sits proudly on a steep hill is quite a sight made entirely from red Welsh stone and set in lush green meadows and wood. The Gardens are beautifully terraced on one side of the Castle and slope down to more formal gardens at the bottom. The walk back up from the formal gardens is not for the faint-hearted, although having just consumed a beautiful Welsh cream tea, this gave us fuel for the ascent! The planting in the gardens is stunning and scent from the honeysuckle was ever present. A great day out. Work on the garden at the Pink Bungalow in Hucclecote continues, and we were fortunate to have an interesting conversation with one of the young men who live there surrounding the history and contents of the large garden pond. Originally there were eight carp introduced to the environment but this number has risen to 40+ over quite a short period of time. The pond is a great addition to this lovely secluded garden. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. For more information please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. At our May meeting we had our Resolutions (National AGM) and Social evening. After business was concluded we arranged a quiz and had drinks and refreshments. We came second in our skittles match which we thought was quite good, hopefully our next match will be better………! Our meeting in June is on Stress Management and the importance of sleep. We have lots of different speakers on many varied subjects. There will also be meals out, skittles, croquet, outings and cream teas for the warmer weather, so lots to look forward to. After all of our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. Meetings always include a speaker or demonstration, covering a wide range of subjects and interests; the bring-and-buy sales table, a raffle, refreshments, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. The Guild arranges a bi-monthly lunch at a local pub or restaurant, there is a taster session at a local Bowls Club coming up, a summer Coach Trip, and the annual inter-Guild Skittles tournament. Our most recent speaker was Frances Benton, on "A Passion for Pearls". Frances brought an extensive collection of pearls, covering the three types of pearls - simulated, natural and cultured, and including the many shades they come in. She gave an informative and entertaining account of her travels in pursuit of pearls, and dispelled some of the myths around these beautiful spheres of chalk and oyster juice! Forthcoming speakers include Michael Boyes on "A Victorian Rector and Nine Old Maids", and "Tax Care and Toys Boys". Visitors and guests are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along!
