A bit about

The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. At last the nights are starting to pull out and with the clocks about to change this weekend, let’s hope that there is a feeling that Spring may be just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but it certainly seems to help with the mood when the weather is better. With the Easter holidays almost upon us and a nice long bank holiday weekend to look forward to, it is this time of year when we start to venture outside again and realise all the work that needs doing in our gardens. If you have work that you need doing in your gardens and feel that it’s too much for you to cope with, we have plenty of landscape gardeners, lawn men and property maintenance businesses that can help you get on top of everything - just take a look at our index on page 38 to help find what you are looking for. May be you feel that you have been neglected over the winter months and could do with putting a spring back in your step! Well we have plenty of local beauty therapists that could help with that. Touch of Beauty are an new salon based in Brockworth, they are running an offer on gel manicures this April, see page 29 for more info. If you are thinking of getting out and about, always keep an eye on the events that the Hucclecote Community Association are running, see opposite page - there’s always something on for all the family. Congratulations to Mr J Dempsey, the winner of last months Sudoku competition, Cineworld tickets will be with you soon. Have a great Easter... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Working safely

DIY enthusiasts need the same protection as tradesmen. This includes protective goggles and gloves, protective masks and ear protectors. Dust, sprays, and flying chips are not uncommon in DIY work – which is why you should protect your eyes. Standard protective goggles are usually sufficient. When performing work like sawing, sanding or chiselling, you should not underestimate the risk of possible hand injuries caused by chips. Full protection is only offered by special protective gloves. You should not wear any gloves when using hand-held circular saws, belt sanders and drills because they can get caught in the rotating tools. Don't forget breathing protection: When drilling, sawing, sanding, planing or routing, you should protect your lungs with a disposable protective mask – even better with a fine dust mask. When dealing with insulation wool or solvent-based paints and varnishes, masks with activated carbon filters provide the best protection. Don’t forget the strain put on your ears when drilling, sawing, sanding, etc. Earplugs are sufficient for sporadic use. If you frequently work with noise-intensive power tools, it is advisable to use ear muffs. Wear the right clothes: They should be comfortable, tight-fitting and flameproof. Watches and jewellery are dangerous and should be taken off before you begin with the work. For your own safety, tie up long hair to prevent it getting caught up in running machines. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Still a kid at heart inside a ripped, godlike body, Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? But he'll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.

Pet Semetary Starring: Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, John Lithgow Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed, who, after relocating with his wife Rachel and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family's new home. Hucclecote Scout News The Ten Pin Bowling session went well, with Scouts having a good go at knocking the pins down. The evening ended with burger and chips. Although the turn out for the Founders Day celebrations was a little low, it was more than made up with the good singing and buffet afterwards. Plans are well in hand for the May Day Scout Camp at Wood House Park Scout Camp site near Bristol. With 20 Scouts already booked in, it should be a good camp with all the extra activities on site. We welcome 4 Cubs who have just come into Scouts and several who are new to Scouting, numbers have now meant we have made a new patrol. On Sunday 25th April the whole group will join the rest of the Gloucester Scouts to march through the city to the cathedral for the annual St Georges day service. All boys and girls are welcome to join the group - 6 to 8 for Beavers - 8 to 10 Cubs 10 to 14 Scouts - Phone Terry on 521664 for more details. ————————-

Hucclecote Garden Club Having just had our Annual General Meeting, it is good to hear that our membership is growing. I know that generally Garden clubs are struggling with falling membership but hopefully our trend will continue into the gardening year ahead. The recent talk on the "Great Glasshouse Wisley, concept to completion", by Nick Morgan from Coleford was well supported and enjoyed by all. Nick spent 23 years of his working life within the Royal Horticultural Society and gave us many insights into the trials and successes that go on behind the scene at Wisley. The Club has visited Wisley in the past, but on Nick's suggestion 2021/2022 would be a good time to re-visit as all the current renovations and planting should be complete by then. In April we have Tom Price from Cheltenham Orchid Society coming along to share his expertise and vast knowledge of Orchids and their care. I think most people have either been given an orchid as a gift, or brought one themselves and struggle with watering and general care of these beautiful plants. Come armed with a notebook, is the advice!! Do come along to our Garden Club if you are a garden novice where you will enjoy a great evening of gardening advice and chat, tips from those who have been gardening for quite a while, or just to share your love of gardening with others. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.00pm for 7.30pm. For further information please contact Joy on Glos 553185 or Sue on Glos 543573. At our last meeting, Claire Salmon gave us a talk and demonstration on the art of doll making. She explained the whole procedure from start to finish, which is quite involved, very interesting and a lovely evening. Our next meeting will be the Severn Freewheelers, which is our chosen charity for the year. They are a group of volunteer riders who transport blood to wherever it is needed. In the week we had a lovely lunch out which we enjoyed, especially with a glass of wine! Other things we have throughout the year will be; floral arrangements, coffee mornings, skittles, bowls and buffet, a strawberry tea and days out for lunch or shopping and then lunch, which is always a winner. After the speakers we have refreshments, a raffle and also some time to chat and socialise. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm, visitors and guests are very welcome. For more information phone Beverley on 01452 63208 or just pop in to see us.

Glevum Probus Club We are a friendly, non-political club which meets at St Lawrence Parish Centre, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month Future talks are on the following subjects; April 10th - John Penny - Wartime Radio Broadcasting Visitors and potential members are welcome Please contact Terry 01452 612432 - For more information visit: glevum-probus.org.uk

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. At each monthly meeting, we have a demonstration or speaker covering a wide range of topics; a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments and the opportunity to chat and socialise. During the year, there are theatre trips, regular lunches at local restaurants, and in May, Afternoon Tea at Hatherley Manor with other local Guilds, to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Townswomen's Guild movement. Our most recent speaker was Sandy Osborne, a serving Police Officer in the West Country, who told us about the trials and tribulations of self-publishing her debut novel, "Girl Cop" - described by one reviewer as "Bridget Jones in uniform"! Sandy gave an interesting insight into the world of an aspiring author, and the excerpts she read out from "Girl Cop" has put it on many people's "To read" list. Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Ring Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along! Please mention
