Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. As I write this the vaccination programme is going really well, especially in our area, and we are all keeping everything crossed that lockdown will start to feel like it is lifting during April. Fingers crossed, retail will start to open again, and that is great news for many of our local businesses. Beauty salons, hairdressers and leisure centres can all start to open their doors again and I’m sure we can’t wait to get back and support them. We have a few beauty salons that advertise with us and they would love to have your support, you can find them all on our index page, page 22. We also have a local fitness instructor who can work with you outdoors if you would prefer, and help you get fit for Summer, find more details on page 15. Covid 19 will still be part of our lives for a while though, and so if you are concerned about how clean the air is where you work, whether at home or in the office, then why not look at the page opposite and think about purchasing a Clean Air Unit to help give protection to your work space. Finally with Easter round the corner and hopefully the feeling of Spring in the air, why not treat yourselves to a home delivery of ice cream from Golding’s ice cream and take advantage of their offer which you can find on the back page. We have a great offer this month to any new businesses that are looking to advertise with us - 20% off our current rates! Wishing you all a Happy Easter and please all continue to take care and keep safe Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Changing a lock

There are a number of reasons why you may need to change the locks at home. Maybe you have lost your keys. The easiest lock to change is what is commonly called the Yale lock. This lock is actually called a night latch and the whole assembly does not need to be changed as the internal working latch, barrel or cylinder, can be changed independently of the rest of the mechanism. This allows you to use a new key that after all is the usual purpose of changing locks At the back of the door you will see the lock box. This is held on by two screws, which are located above and below the actual door latch. Release these screws completely and put them somewhere safe. You will then be able to wiggle off the lock box. When the lock box is removed you will see the locks back plate. This is the plate that holds the whole lot to the door. Sticking out of the back plate you will see a thin bar with grooves across its width. This is called the shank. Above the shank and to either side of it are two screw heads, which hold the barrel or cylinder to the back plate. Unscrew these and put them with the lock box screws. You should then be able to pull the barrel or cylinder out of the door. Take a new barrel or cylinder and lay it alongside the one you have just taken out. Measure the length of the shank and using a strong pair of pliers and a hacksaw, cut the new shank to the same length as the old. The grooves that are already partially cut in the shank are there to help you. When you have sawn a little way through the shank you should be able to bend it downwards to allow the shank to split in the correct place. Re assembling the lock is now a direct reversal of the procedure you used to dismantle it. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club Hopefully in April we can say "goodbye" to Winter and really embrace all the joys of Spring, with Easter at the beginning of this month and the soil warming up, we can enjoy our favourite Spring flowers well into bloom in the garden. Longer days now and the sight of trees covered in pink and white blossom, we can really get going on planning our Summer borders. In the kitchen garden lettuce can be sown outside, onion sets and shallots can be planted outside too. In the greenhouse tomatoes can be sown in a warm area, together with aubergines and celery. Cucumbers and melons can be sown in late April. All being well, with restrictions being lifted in late June, and the Community Centre re-opening for business, we can look to holding our monthly meetings once again. We will continue to meet on the third Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the Hucclecote Community Centre and hope to bring a great variety of fantastic horticultural speakers to our Members and anyone interested in gardening and gardens. For more information please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. HUCCLECOTE LARKHAY WI At last we have something to look forward to as lockdown is slowly opening, albeit in small stages. If everything goes according to the government schedule we hope to have our first meeting in JULY. We are all looking forward to this, so that we can catch up with everyone in person, but in the meantime we are continuing with our weekly Zoom meetings. We have speakers planned, and our coffee morning / strawberry tea afternoon is all pencilled in, as long as guidelines do not change. The vaccine programme is well underway and we all look forward to the return to normality. As the days get longer we look forward to Spring, and being able to enjoy our gardens in the sunshine. We meet on the second Thursday of the month in the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm. In the meantime keep safe and well. Please phone Betty on 698299 for more information on the WI HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD With the end of lockdown now in sight, provisional plans are being made for future meetings of the Guild. We hope to meet for the first time on Thursday 15th July, at 7.30pm at the Hucclecote Community Centre. This will be an informal meeting to catch up , and there will be a brief AGM. A Bowling session and afternoon tea is booked for August, and from September, monthly evening meetings will continue as normal. Please phone Linda, the Chairman, on 617701, for more information.
