A bit about “The Hucclecote-Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the August edition of your Hucclecote Link. The schools have now all broken up for the Summer and my youngest has just finished primary school so if feels like the end of an era, but as I write this the sun is shinning, so lets hope that this is a good sign for the weeks to come and that we can all enjoy a Summer of fun and be able to spend it enjoying the outdoors. If you are lucky enough to be going away anywhere on your holidays and fancy a bit of a pamper before hand, local beauty salons, Therapy by Sam Baggott on the front cover and Body Flair on page 14 have some great Summer offers. Or if you are looking for ways to help loose those few pounds before your holidays, then I can highly recommend Zumba by Jane on page 14, for a fun way to exercise. Now is a great time to get on top of those gardening jobs in preparation of the BBQ season, so if your garden needs a bit of a spruce up or your patio a bit of a clean, we have some great local customers who can help you out, all our customers are listed in our index on page 30. Over the Autumn months the The Hucclecote Community Association are holding a variety of events, to see more of what’s on offer and place some dates in your diary, see their advert on the opposite page. Also if you are thinking about your little ones needing some extra stimulation and making new friends in September, Hillview Early Years currently have availability from September—see page 14 for more details. As we head towards the final quarter of the year (already!) and you would like to see if we can help you to grow your business, we have a great Summer Sale that you might like to take advantage of, see more on page 24. Congratulations to Mrs J Dempsey, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld ticket will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great Summer Sarah. Dave’s top tips Why move to ceramic disk taps? Ceramic disk taps are designed to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, in hard water areas they do not and it is as well to know how they operate and how to service them. It is very rare for the ceramic discs to wear out and the need to replace them is even rarer. It is, most often, just a case of dismantling the moving parts and servicing them. Should you be unlucky enough to have a tap wherein the parts do actually "wear out" then it is unlikely you will be able to replace the discs and will probably need to replace the whole cartridge within the unit. The disc tap should be virtually indestructible because a) the ceramics do not wear out, and b) The distance moved by any part of the tap in any one go, is only a quarter of a turn. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself

Hucclecote Scout News The Midsummer Madness evening went well, with water balloons, ducks under sheet. Sweet or wet sponge when you put your head through the hole and ending with everyone having a cup for the water fight. With 25 on summer camp at Newquay all we want is fine weather for our trip to Lands End the coasting activity and a short night walk sleeping under the stars. From September Steve Plant will be running Scout meetings but I will still be around to help out for a bit longer. In the Autumn the Scouts will be doing a conversation project on the Hucclecote Meadows and helping to tidy up the land around the Parish Council at Pineholt. With Go Karting, Lazer Tag and Climbing at the Climbing Centre we have plenty of activities to look forward too. On the first weekend in September 5 Scouts will go on an Air activity weekend and have a chance to go up in an aeroplane. All units start back from Monday 5th September, Beavers now have a waiting list so please if your son/daughter wants to join get their name on the waiting list when they become 5 ready to start at 6 years old. Still room for Cubs (8 to 10) and Scouts (10 to 14). Please phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Garden Club We are now well into Summer a very busy time for all gardeners, whether keeping slugs and snails at bay, propping up our prize flowers flattened from heavy showers, or finding time to cut the grass and again dodge the frequent and unexpected rain. It seems to be a never ending battle sometimes. On the 25th August Hucclecote Garden Club holds its annual Plant and Produce Show at the Community Centre. Categories for entry include six Runner Beans, One container of six different herbs, a vase of mixed flowers, 3 carrots, a pot of Jam and a holiday photograph. Our entries are judged by the well respected local Judge, Bob Champion, who has kindly come along to our Show for the past few years. Bob is very measured in his judgements and gives us many tips to improve our entries for future years. We hope for a good turn out again this year. Later in the year in September we have David Coombs coming along to give us a talk on Ponds, Marginals and Bog Gardens, which should be of interest to many people who now have a pond in their garden, however small. Ponds are a great source of fun and interest to the younger members of the family, and can be a much needed home for frogs, newts and other bugs of the pond variety, they are also a great attractor for the dragonfly. The heron is perhaps not such a welcome guest! We hope a few more locals might come along to the Garden Club and pick up a few gardening tips, have a friendly chat and enjoy our excellent variety of speakers. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month, 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Further details from Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI Our meeting in June was a talk on The Swinging Sixties. Virginia Adsett and Gill Morss brought in many objects including toys, records and clothes. It brought back many happy memories from that time and we could not believe how short our skirts were!!!!!!!!!! Our other event was a picnic at Pittville, Cheltenham, with other WI’s from the Gloucester area. We had a lovely picnic and we had a trio that played and sang lots of different songs, everyone was up dancing (well mostly everyone), it was a very pleasant day. We have different speakers on various subjects most months. Other things happening through this year include meals out, friendly skittles, coffee mornings, afternoon tea. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. Phone Ellen on 01452 611976 or Betty on 01452 698299 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. At every meeting, we have speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea, coffee and refreshments, and the chance to chat and socialise. As well as the monthly meetings, the Guild has a programme of events, including a cake sale, a coach trip for lunch and a garden visit, the monthly Rambling Group, and inter-Guild skittles and quiz competitions. Our most recent speaker was Rosemary Morgan, who gave a very lighthearted evening's entertainment of "Memories and Monologues". Rosemary's anecdotes and childhood memories clearly struck a note of "I remember that!" from many ladies, and her choice of humorous poems and monologues made for a very enjoyable evening. Forthcoming speakers include Karen Cornwall who will be bringing a Support Dog along to meet us, and a demonstration by Neil Alcock of the Vineyard Pottery. Visitors are always made welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information, or just come along!
