Dave’s top tips How to set out and check a room for square Floor tiling, carpets or any number of things around the home require a degree of setting out. Remember a quarter of an inch out at one end of a 12 foot room, means about 2 inches out at the other end. It is important to start any appropriate projects with straight and square lines and it is very easy to accomplish. The method is called 3,4,5 and for the technically minded is based on Pythagoras's theorem which we won't go into now! Suffice to say that if you measure along one wall 3 feet (or meters or any other unit), and along the other wall 4 of the same unit, the diagonal line in between the points should measure 5 units. If it does your walls are square, if it doesn't, you need to mark some points that are square to start your work. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club Our November Members Evening proved to be another enjoyable end-of-the-season fun event for Members and Committee alike. We opened with refreshments and mince pies, with a background of festive music. The creative talent of each of our members was put to the test when placed on each table, were an array of pine-cones, ivy, teasles, assorted dried flower-heads, glitter, candles, raffia, etc., etc., which had to be arranged into some sort of table decoration or Christmas cracker, with the insentive of interesting prizes for the most artistic creation. Our festive quiz was very kindly provided again by Chris Ellicott. We have no meeting in December, but are presently organizing our fantastic 2018 Speakers Programme. So far we have Duncan Coombs paying us a visit again to talk about Wall Climbers and Shrubs in January, Allan Wells from Longhope giving us the background to Tulip Mania quite a contrast to his last talk on all aspects of Bees, and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust coming along to give us an insight into some of the work they do in the area with particular reference to the local flora. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Hucclecote Community Centre, at 7.30pm. Do come along for a great cup of coffee or tea, our usual raffle, with speakers on a wide range of horticultural topics, all for ÂŁ2 - great value for money, and pick up a few tips for your garden for the New Year. For more information please ring Sue on Gloucester 543573 or Joy on Gloucester 553185. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

In October our speaker was Peter Berry who gave us a talk on ‘Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands’ which was extremely enjoyable and interesting. Later in October we had a wine tasting evening at Laithwaites which was very good and we all enjoyed ourselves. We stocked up on some really delicious wines for Christmas. Cheese and wine was served whilst having our AGM in November. After the AGM our speaker was Metter Warriner who gave us a talk on ‘A Danish Christmas’. She gave us an insight on how their traditions vary from ours. She showed us some of the ornaments that they display and she made some delicious Danish biscuits which we tucked into. We are looking forward to ‘The Event house’ in Worcester in November, where we will have a luncheon and a cabaret. In December we have a Christmas Party which is always good and we all look forward to this. We have lots of things to look forward to in the coming weeks. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Our last meeting started with the presentation of a cheque for £1,500 to Cllr David Brown; the proceeds of our Summer Fashion Show, which will be used for fund a defibrillator in Hucclecote. The location has yet to be agreed, but it will be a valuable community facility. Our thanks to "Just In" of Winchcombe who put on such a successful evening, and the local people and businesses who supported the event. Other Guild news was that we raised £130 at our charity coffee morning; we came joint second in the Inter-Guild Quiz, and further details were given of the next Ramble; the Christmas Shopping trip to Cardiff; the Christmas Social and the New Year's Lunch. Our speaker was Mike Bottomley, who gave an insight into Katherine Parr Gloucestershire's Queen. Katherine had been well educated, in order to secure a good marriage, and having been widowed twice, became the sixth wife of King Henry VIII. She survived King Henry, was the first woman to have books published, and is buried at Soudley Castle. The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. The meetings always include a speaker, refreshments, a raffle and the sales table, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Visitors are always welcome; phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along next time!
