Daves Top Tips Radiator Problems If you are having problems with your heating system, here are a few things to look out for that could be the cause. 1: Top of radiator cold, bottom hot. This is usually a result of air in the radiator that has risen to the top and is stopping any more hot water filling the radiator. It is cured by “bleeding off the air from the top of the radiator by opening the bleed nipple and allowing the air to escape If your radiators need constant bleeding then too much air is entering the system and the problem is a bigger one requiring a central heating engineer to have a look. 2: Top of radiator hot, bottom cold. Rust and sludge has probably built up in the bottom of the radiator and this will displace any water leaving the bottom of the radiator cold. Proprietary sludge removers can be used to clean systems through. Theses are on sale at all plumbers’ merchants but read the instructions before use. 3: Downstairs radiators hot, upstairs cold. This generally means that the feed and expansion tank in your loft has run dry which can indicate a problem with the valve. This needs addressing quickly and a change of valve is usually in order. This is not a huge job and, as long as you have turned off the water, is well within the capabilities of a DIY enthusiast. 4: Upstairs radiators hot, downstairs cold. This possibly indicates a faulty central heating pump and this should be checked by an engineer. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Christmas “Tis the season to be jolly………”, “Good King Wenceslas looked out……..”, “The holly and the Ivy………”; just how many Christmas Carols can you remember, which is your favourite and what makes your toes curl and forces a shudder up your spine? If you think about Christmas Carols or spend a few idle moments googling the lyrics, it is amazing the width of subject matter they cover. You can have carols about Czech royalty, or evergreen flora, or Christmas trees, or festive interior decoration or even the sighting of three sailing vessels on Christmas morning. More religious carols also enjoy their fair share of poetic licence when it comes to lyrics picturing “bleak mid-winters” in the Middle East and I am sure that a baby lying in a manger and not crying would be cause for concern. The one thing that this wonderfully eclectic group of songs have in common is Christmas itself. The celebration of a time in history when as the Message Bible puts it “The Word”, that’s God, “became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood” with the sole purpose of re-establishing a relationship with humanity. So, this Christmas, whether you are enjoying a festive sing or wishing for a ‘Silent night’, just remember the reason for the season. Have a great Christmas. Hucclecote Scout News The Halloween evening went well ending with the usual super firework display, also the Scout night with apple bobbing and other Halloween games. As is usual, there was a good turn out for the Go Karting and Lazer Tag, only comment is that I’m pleased that there is still six years to go before the Scouts drive on the road! The Good Turn to the Parish Council, by cutting back all the years growth on the shrubs and picking up litter around the area went well. The 10 Scouts all enjoyed the break we had half way through, when we had hot dogs, doughnuts and a drink. With the new badges and awards now well established we will be encouraging Scouts to go in for individual badges. Some have already started with yachts man and fisher mans badge, with all the Scouts learning basic first aid. The Cub Scouts had their annual indoor camp at Cranham with the theme being stars and planets. With the good weather they did several outdoor activities. Eight Scouts are taking part in the Stomp. A county organised seven mile night hike with incidents in the Stroud area on the 19th November, lets hope it stays dry and not too cold. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have children interested in Scouting. Beavers 6 to 8 years old, Cubs 8 to 10 and Scouts 10 to 14.

Hucclecote Garden Club One of our recent speakers Ian Elphick, Gloucester City Council's Senior Countryside Ranger, gave us a great insight into the work of his very small band of colleagues (3 in fact) - along with an invaluable group of volunteers - who have responsibility for the upkeep of three City green spaces - Robinswood Hill, Alney Island and the Hucclecote Meadows. Ian showed us some very old photographs of Robinswood Hill as it was in the 1930's, very different to how it is today, there were many fewer trees, and quite a few cottages which housed some of the workers of the Quarry when it was in operation. In fact Robinswood Hill Quarry is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). A few years ago Ian kindly took a party from our Garden Club for a walk around Alney Island, which can be found on the other side of the River near the old Gloucester Prison, which was quite an eye-opener for us so-called locals. Hucclecote Meadows as locals will know, is a blaze of colour in May when the wild flowers are in full bloom, this is certainly an area which we all appreciate, and are most grateful to Ian and his crew for keeping in such a wonderful state for us and future generations to enjoy. We are currently making plans for our 2017 Trip to Waddesdon Manor, near Aylesbury, a National Trust property in the style of a French chateau, and hope to give our Members some more interesting and varied Speakers for 2017. Do come along to our talks, we meet on the fourth Thursday each month in the community centre at 7.30pm. Further details from Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. Hucclecote Larkhay WI

At the end of October we had our ‘Octoberfest’ a group harvest supper which was attended by other WI groups in the area, which went very well. We were entertained by the Gloucester Ukulele strings Experience. They were exceptionally good fun, the music fantastic and we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Our November meeting included our AGM which was well attended and after the meeting refreshments were served. Our Christmas meal out is arranged for the beginning of December. On our last meeting before Christmas we will be having our Christmas party and we will also be having a talk on a ‘Tudor Christmas’ which should be very interesting. We have speakers most months on various topics, and we have social evenings mixed in as well, something for everyone. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Betty on 01452 698299 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop along and you would be made very welcome.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Visitors and guests are always given a warm welcome at meetings of the Guild. We meet on the third Thursday each month at the Hucclecote Community Centre, at 7.30pm, when we have speakers covering a wide range of topics; tea coffee and biscuits, and the chance to chat and socialise. Please ring Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information, or just come along! Our most recent speaker was Anneliese Sterry, from the Gloucester Foodbank, who gave an informative and thought-provoking talk on their work. The Trussell Trust started from a garden shed in Salisbury in 2004, and now oversees over 400 Foodbanks throughout the UK. The Foodbank offers a lifeline to people who are referred to them from various agencies, and who have no other means of support for a limited period of time. Referrals are given a comprehensive selection of food to last three days, and are offered practical support to address the problems they are facing, and thanks to NPower's community support, can be offered fuel vouchers. Still ahead is the coach trip to Bath for Christmas shopping, the Christmas social, and the New Year's Lunch in January. Our final speaker for 2016 will be Phil Collins on "The History of Punch & Judy", and we start 2017 with Lyn Cinderey on "Gloucester Ghost Walks".
