Dave’s top tips

How to stop the smell and gurgling from your sink or basin. A very popular question is " How can I stop my basin/shower gurgling when I pull the plug out?" To solve this problem it’s a good idea to know what causes the problem. The water leaves the basin and begins its run into the trap underneath. This trap has water in it, which stops smells coming back up through the pipes into the room through the plughole. When the water from the basin passes through the trap, it begins its run to the main waste pipe and out into the external manholes and main sewers. Some of this journey is made through (inside the building) vertical pipes and sometimes through pipes that have rather more than the 1 in 40 slope, which is recommended for foul water drainage. This encourages the water to run very quickly and sometimes this causes a vacuum behind the flow. This vacuum sucks at the water that remains in the trap. Most often this "sucking" causes the water in the trap to bubble and gurgle - hence the gurgling noise. Sometimes the water is sucked out of the trap completely and this is when foul gasses can get back into the room. Fitting an air inlet valve is easy. The pipe from the trap can be cut (as near to the trap as possible) and a Tee piece inserted. The air inlet valve is then fixed to the top of a vertical length of pipe from the Tee piece. When the valve is fitted the water runs away as before but instead of the vacuum sucking water from the trap it just sucks air which is admitted through the valves. This allows the water to run away noiselessly from basin, bath and shower hence little or no disturbance to the water in the trap and no foul smells coming back through the plughole. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Bestselling Gloucester Author’s latest novel makes HarperCollins main crime and thriller list Author and Gloucester resident Rachel Sargeant’s latest novel is on target for publication this month with publishing giant HarperCollins, launching Rachel onto their main crime and thriller list. The Roommates, Rachel’s new psychological thriller follows her previous novel The Good Teacher, which made HarperCollins Killer Reads digital-first list. Set on a university campus and published just as real life students get stuck into their new college careers, The Roommates is a change of crime-scene from Rachel’s previous novels but with yet another shocking twist that won’t disappoint. Rachel has lived in Abbeymead, Gloucester, with her husband and children for the past ten years. Before becoming a full time author, Rachel was a school librarian in Gloucester and Cheltenham. Rachel said: “I embarked on writing as a hobby almost 20 years ago and have seen steady progress, winning short story competitions and securing publication in women’s magazines. “After I achieved a distance-learning MA in Creative Writing with Lancaster University, a London agency decided that I was good enough to take on, leading to a contract with HarperCollins to publish my first psychological thriller, The Perfect Neighbours, and then to commit to my next two books”. The Perfect Neighbours reached the Amazon Kindle Top Ten chart and Number One in the British and Irish Kindle Crime Chart, and made number 45 in the USA. It has since been sold in British and Canadian bookshops and translated into Italian and Czech. Total sales are now well over 100,000 copies. Rachel said “I’m thrilled that HarperCollins have moved me onto their main crime fiction list. The Roommates is a psychological thriller set in a university. Four girls arrive for freshers’ week and find themselves sharing a flat. All four are holding secrets from their pasts, but when one of them goes missing, the other three have to learn to trust each other and work together to find her.” “That’s quite a change from my most recent novel,” Rachel added. “The Good Teacher, published this summer, was a reworked novel I wrote a few years ago, updated to give it a contemporary and edgier feel, but keeping on board my young detective, Pippa Adams. “After a popular teacher is murdered and dumped in a country ditch, and his wife found beaten and gagged at home, Pippa scratches the surface of the school community and uncovers the good teacher’s darkest secrets.” Rachel will join HarperCollins’ main crime and thriller list in November 2019 with The Roommates. The ebook is available from 24 October. Rachel said: “Having recently attended the Morecambe and Vice Crime Writing Festival in Lancashire, at the atmospheric 1930s art-deco Midland Hotel where they filmed Poirot, I’m awed by the enormous crime writing talent out there so I’m delighted that HarperCollins still place such confidence in me.” About the author Rachel studied German and Librarianship at Aberystwyth University and became a chartered librarian. Rachel’s signing to HarperCollins has given her the chance to launch as a full-time writer. Successes so far include The Perfect Neighbours, The Good Teacher and Gallipoli: Year of Love and Duty. Rachel is a previous winner of Writing Magazine’s Crime Short Story competition and has been placed or shortlisted in various competitions, including the Bristol Short Story Prize. Her stories have appeared in My Weekly and the Accent Press Saucy Shorts series. Rachel grew up in Lincolnshire before taking on challenges in Surrey and Shropshire and then moving to Germany. Her current home is in Gloucester. Before becoming a full time author, Rachel was a school librarian in Gloucester and Cheltenham, but always making time for writing.

We have been lucky enough to receive a signed copy of The Roommates, if you would like to win a copy, just drop me an email with your name and address and you will go into a draw. Deadline is 31st December - sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk

As the ancient battle between good and evil begins to draw to a conclusion, the fate of the galaxy is in the balance as Rey learns how powerful she really is. Encompassing the magnificent history of the Star Wars saga, The Rise of Skywalker finishes the incredible story George Lucas began to tell back in 1977 when the first Star Wars film was released. With everything at stake, the Resistance face insurmountable odds to survive and save the galaxy against the might of the First Order, as an even more evil and terrifying threat lurks in the shadows.

When events take a much unexpected turn, the chalk and cheese pair are forced to rely on each other in a whole new way and if they can’t work as a team, they could put the whole world in peril. Set in the high-octane world of espionage, this is not the typical adventure you would find James Bond in but is a hilarious animated comedy that will surprise and delight as the New Year draws in.

Hucclecote Garden Club We recently had a really interesting Speaker, Lucy from The Canals and Rivers Trust, based in the Waterways Museum in Gloucester, come along to the Garden Club to give us an insight into the work currently being undertaken in Gloucestershire by the Trust. Shad, a fish we knew very little about, are being re-introduced and encouraged to thrive in the River Severn with ingenious methods being applied on the River itself to help this happen. In December we have our Members Evening, which gives Members an opportunity to get together prior to Christmas and enjoy free drinks, mincepies, a Raffle, Christmas Quiz as well as a Christmas Garland/Wreath Demonstration given by Sue from Over Farm. This is our last Meeting of the year but we can look forward to some exciting Talks next year on the National Garden Scheme, Garden Tips for Spring with Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries and a Speaker from the R.S.P.B. We continue to meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the Hucclecote Community Centre. For further details please contact either Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month. We are a friendly group of local ladies, who welcome visitors and guests to join us for our next monthly meeting which comprises a speaker or demonstration, a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments and the opportunity to socialise and catch up with friends. With Christmas not far off now, our final speaker of the year will be Mandy Marshall from The Churchdown Chutney Company; there is a Christmas-themed flower arranging day in mid-December, and the Christmas Social Evening to round off the year. Our most recent speaker was Marilyn Davis, whose talk was based on the diaries kept by her ancestor, Mary Ann Weston, who left Cheltenham in the 1840's to travel to America. She was in the first wave of settlers to establish Salt Lake City in Utah, having travelled in a wagon train after sailing from Liverpool to Quebec, and the descriptions Marilyn read from her diaries brought her story to life. If you would like to come to a Guild meeting, please phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night!
