Dear Neighbours, Happy New Year to you all, I think I can just about get away with saying that as this is your first directory of 2018! Welcome to the February edition of your Hucclecote Link….. How many of you have still kept your New Year Resolutions? I don’t personally set any, only because I think I’m setting myself up to fail - but I do like to take a look back over the past year and look at all that I managed to achieve, so look at the positives from the past year, both in business and as a family, the successes we had, the places we visited, friends we saw, memories we made, and then start thinking about what adventures 2018 may bring. If you are someone who likes to set new year resolutions though, and if getting fit is one of them - we have a couple of local Zumba classes in Hucclecote, which are suitable for all fitness groups, see more details on page 19 & 20. The New Year is always a time when we might think about redecorating our home - Interior Needs, page 25 are still offering 10% discounts during February with their advert , so take advantage and give your home a new look this year. Perhaps you have had enough of those January blues, so why not treat yourself to a night out and a good giggle at the Hucclecote Community centre with Rock and Roll Bingo - see more opposite! Congratulations to Helen Chandran , for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Have a great month - Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Frozen Condensate Pipe Over the last few cold months I have had a number of calls from people who have had problems with their boiler breaking down. The culprit boilers tend to be the modern and now common condensing combination type boiler. This is the type that heats water on demand with no immersion tank or loft header tank. The problem has been due to the extreme cold weather we have had over the last few years causing the condensate pipe to freeze and causing the boiler to shut down. This affects both hot water and heating. The cure should it happen is usually to thaw the pipe with warm water untill the condensate within the pipe runs freely, then a quick press of the reset button upon restarting the boiler and all should be well. However prevention is better than cure, So wherever possible exposed condensate pipe should be treated in the same manner as exposed water pipe and be properly lagged to prevent the ice forming within the pipe. An even better solution is to relocate the pipework so as it runs inside the building and flows into an internal trap such as you would find under the sink. This then mixes the hot waste water from the sink with the cold condensate and is in much less danger of freezing. Things to bear in mind are to ensure the new pipework runs downhill with no air traps as this can in itself cause a boiler to shut down. Also the water should be expelled into a sewerage drain rather than a fresh rainwater drain. A little bit of thought now could save many a cold night with no heating and a lot less aggravation in the future.

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The Group are having a good tidy up of the H.Q, as like many places, you put things away and never use. I am sure we will fill the skip which we have ordered. The next main event is the Founders day celebrations on Sunday the 25th February at 2.30pm. All units put on a small item between camp fire songs and ending with refreshments. John Morris was presented with presented with an award for 25 years in scouting. Terry was also presented with two rose bushes for his 80th birthday and for 69 years with the group and still fairly active. All looking forward to the warmer weather when we can start doing outside activities. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have anyone interested in joining the Group, boys and girls age 6 to 14.

Hucclecote Garden Club The Garden Club has a bit of a break in December and does not meet again until the New Year on Thursday 25th January at 7.30pm. We have invited Duncan Coombs back to Hucclecote to give us tips, advice and suggestions for Wall Climbers and Shrubs. Duncan is on the list of Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies speakers and is a retired Lecturer in Docorative Horticulture. In February we have Allan Wells from Longhope paying us a return visit but speaking on Tulip Mania - Greed, venal avarice and gullibility - nothing changes! This sounds rather different from his usual expertise on Bees. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust will be coming to the Club in March giving us an insight into their work on the flora in Gloucestershire and its conservation. The Gardens of South Africa is the topic for David Cropp from Worcester. To quote David - "I do not spend any talk on a death-by-overhead-projection/slide shows - all talks involve audience interaction" I hope our Members are prepared for this! It should be a lively evening. We look forward to a new gardening year full of surprises and enjoyment come along and join us on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. Have a hot drink and biscuit, a raffle, great speaker, and good horticultural company. For more information please ring Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. Our speaker for the start of the New Year was Helen Barry, who specialises in making items from paper. Some of the items we made were table serviette decorations and flowers, (some of our flowers looked more realistic than others). Our next meeting in February will be Pam Street who will give us a talk on ‘The Golden Age of British Dance Bands’. After all our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments and a nice chat. As the year proceeds we have a lot more speakers talking on many different and varied subjects. There will be meals out, coffee mornings, skittles, quiz teams, and cream teas for the warmer weather, so lots of things to look forward to. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

Tuesday @ Two What is it? A social gathering where you can meet your own friends (or make new ones); if you like playing games (Canasta, Scrabble, Rummy Cub) these are available or bring your favourite game with you. The afternoon finishes with home made cake and a cup of tea.

Where is it held? In the Church Centre, behind the church in Larkhay Road 2 - 4 pm

Is there a charge? A donation of £1.50 to cover the cost of cake and tea would be appreciated

When does the group meet? Fortnightly - February 6th & 20th March - 6th, 20th & 27th
