A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Happy New Year! Welcome to the February edition of your Hucclecote Link. So how are the New Years Resolutions going? Have any of you stuck with them into February I wonder? Dry January was a bit of a non starter in this house…. but I have actually joined a gym this year and so far I’m still going - ok, It’s only been about 3 weeks now, but I am hoping that I can keep this up, at least for a few months! If you are thinking about increasing your fitness this year, I can highly recommend Zumba classes by Jane, they are low impact and great fun & if you are just thinking about getting back into fitness these are ideal, she has a new class now on Monday evenings at the Walls Club, see more on page 22. Spirit Health Club, on page 15, also offer a free 5 day trial as well, so why not pop along and give it a go. Now that we are into February, and to help shake off those January Blues, perhaps you might like a couple of nights out. Hucclecote Community Association have a live band evening and a Pudding and Quiz party taking place this month, both look to be great evenings, see more details on the opposite page. As always, if you are looking to take up a new activity or join a new club this year, our what’s on pages, on pages 28– 29, always have a variety of clubs that take place locally. Redmarley Cricket Club are currently recruiting new players, so if cricket is your sport read more on page 27. If you have a business, and are thinking of advertising, why not take advantage of our February offer below and we can get your business into all 3 directories for the price of 2 when you take out a 4 month colour advertising package. If you are still unsure about whether to advertise with us, take a look at what the benefits of advertising with us are below Congratulations to Chris John, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Dave’s top tips Frozen Condensate Pipe Over the last few cold months I have had a number of calls from people who have had problems with their boiler breaking down. The culprit boilers tend to be the modern and now common condensing combination type boiler. This is the type that heats water on demand with no immersion tank or loft header tank. The problem has been due to the extreme cold weather we have had over the last few years causing the condensate pipe to freeze and causing the boiler to shut down. This affects both hot water and heating. The cure should it happen is usually to thaw the pipe with warm water untill the condensate within the pipe runs freely, then a quick press of the reset button upon restarting the boiler and all should be well. However prevention is better than cure, So wherever possible exposed condensate pipe should be treated in the same manner as exposed water pipe and be properly lagged to prevent the ice forming within the pipe. An even better solution is to relocate the pipework so as it runs inside the building and flows into an internal trap such as you would find under the sink. This then mixes the hot waste water from the sink with the cold condensate and is in much less danger of freezing. Things to bear in mind are to ensure the new pipework runs downhill with no air traps as this can in itself cause a boiler to shut down. Also the water should be expelled into a sewerage drain rather than a fresh rainwater drain. A little bit of thought now could save many a cold night with no heating and a lot less aggravation in the future. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News Although Winter we still have a very active indoor meeting. The Christmas party went well with most of the Scouts staying on for more games and a sleep over. All making tents inside by hanging sheets from beams. The Scouts and Cubs spent a weekend at Sainsburys who were kind enough to allow us to bag pack to raise funds to keep the Group going (we are self supporting). The Council have offered us to buy the land the H.Q is on. Although the figure mentioned is high, we would not have to pay ground rent each month, which would nearly cover the repayments. We hope to have it sorted by the start of the financial year, as it has been discussed for nearly a year now. Our first main event is helping to plant trees at the balancing ponds by the Ten Pin Centre (2000 to plant altogether). Plans for the Summer have been made, with extra activities up to July. Starting with Ten Pin Bowling….Go Karting….Lazer Tag...Climbing…..Kayaking and Wind Surfing. We have our usual camps, one at May Day at a local farm and then the main Summer Camp in Yorkshire at the start of the Summer Holidays. Most of the Scouts have already paid a deposit to come, loads of activities on site and swimming every day already booked. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have children interested in Scouting.
Hucclecote Garden Club Our New Year kicked off with an old favourite of the Club, Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries who came along to talk on Fruit Trees. We have a real treat for February when Steve Quinton, Head Gardener from Rococo Gardens, Painswick, is giving us a talk on the history of the Gardens and hopefully tips on growing snowdrops and cyclamen, which carpet the grass within the Gardens. Many visitors from Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties make the annual trip to the Rococo Gardens to see the wonderful snowdrop display. Our Annual General Meeting takes place in March, when we have a representative from the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies - a body which we as a local Garden Club are affiliated to - paying us a visit and giving us an insight into the work of the Society and its many local connections. The Society have a regular Stand at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival and are a well respected organization, with a List of Speakers from as far afield as Chepstow and Exeter as well are more local Speakers from Churchdown and even Hucclecote. Anyone interested in gardening is most welcome. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month in Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. Further details from Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242
