Dear Neighbours, Happy New Year to you all! Welcome to the January edition of your Hucclecote Link….. Hope you have all had, or about to have, (depending on when you receive this edition over the holidays), a lovely Christmas. I wonder what sort of year 2018 will bring? How many of you set New Year Resolutions? I don’t personally, because I think I’m setting myself up to fail - but I do like to take a look back over the past year and look at all that I managed to achieve, so look at the positives from the past year, both in business and as a family, the successes we had, the places we visited, friends we saw, memories we made, and then start thinking about what adventures 2018 may bring. If you are someone who likes to set new year resolutions though, and if getting fit is one of them - we have a couple of local Zumba classes in Hucclecote, which are suitable for all fitness groups, see more details on page 15 & 20. The New Year is always a time when we might think about redecorating our home - Interior Needs, page 13 and Uk Blinds on page 12 both have sales on during January, so take advantage and give your home a new look this year. Dave’s top tips How to set out and check a room for square Floor tiling, carpets or any number of things around the home require a degree of setting out. Remember a quarter of an inch out at one end of a 12 foot room, means about 2 inches out at the other end. It is important to start any appropriate projects with straight and square lines and it is very easy to accomplish. The method is called 3,4,5 and for the technically minded is based on Pythagoras's theorem which we won't go into now! Suffice to say that if you measure along one wall 3 feet (or meters or any other unit), and along the other wall 4 of the same unit, the diagonal line in between the points should measure 5 units. If it does your walls are square, if it doesn't, you need to mark some points that are square to start your work. Regards Dave Stevens. Hucclecote Scout News The session at the climbing went well with the Scouts doing the long climb then traversing along the climbing wall. The Halloween event was a great success with a good dry evening and many Halloween costumes to judge, ending as usual with a grand firework show. The Scouts are doing many proficiency badges including D.I.Y Guide Weather with more planned for the new year. The Scouts are joining up with Explorers for their Summer camp in Austria next year, we last went there in 20017. The Scouts Christmas party went well with the usual traditional games ending up with a sleep over in shelters made inside. New Scouts are always welcome (10 to 13) please phone Terry on 521664 or just come along and see what we do on a Friday night. NO spaces for Cubs or Beavers I’m afraid.
Hucclecote Garden Club The Garden Club has a bit of a break in December and does not meet again until the New Year on Thursday 25th January at 7.30pm. We have invited Duncan Coombs back to Hucclecote to give us tips, advice and suggestions for Wall Climbers and Shrubs. Duncan is on the list of Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies speakers and is a retired Lecturer in Docorative Horticulture. In February we have Allan Wells from Longhope paying us a return visit but speaking on Tulip Mania - Greed, venal avarice and gullibility - nothing changes! This sounds rather different from his usual expertise on Bees. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust will be coming to the Club in March giving us an insight into their work on the flora in Gloucestershire and its conservation. The Gardens of South Africa is the topic for David Cropp from Worcester. To quote David - "I do not spend any talk on a death-by-overhead-projection/slide shows - all talks involve audience interaction" I hope our Members are prepared for this! It should be a lively evening. We look forward to a new gardening year full of surprises and enjoyment come along and join us on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm. Our November meal out was held at ‘The Event House’ in Worcester where we had a luncheon and cabaret which was very enjoyable. We had an outing to the Whitminster garden centre – where we had a lovely Christmas lunch, also tea and cake in the afternoon, plus plenty of time to do lots of shopping. On our last meeting of the year (December) we are having our Christmas Party. Everyone brings in lots of different foods, we have wine, soft drinks, games, a secret Santa, and it always is good fun. In the New Year we have lots of speakers to give us talks on many subjects; there will be outings for the warmer weather, so lots of things to look forward to. We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Tuesday @ Two What is it? A social gathering where you can meet your own friends (or make new ones); if you like playing games (Canasta, Scrabble, Rummy Cub) these are available or bring your favourite game with you. The afternoon finishes with home made cake and a cup of tea.
Where is it held? In the Church Centre, behind the church in Larkhay Road 2 - 4 pm
Is there a charge? A donation of £1.50 to cover the cost of cake and tea would be appreciated
When does the group meet? Fortnightly - January 9th & 23rd February 6th & 20th
HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. Each meeting includes a speaker or demonstration, which cover a wide range of topics and interests; tea, coffee and biscuits, a raffle, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. During the year, there are outings and social events, a bi-monthly lunch club and a regular ramblers' group. Our final speaker of the year was Pam Browning, on Cake Decoration. Pam not only brought along samples of cakes she had decorated, but demonstrated how simple it was to produce a stunningly hand-decorated cake - very inspiring with Christmas not far ahead! Our first speakers in the New Year include Lorraine Hitchings on "The History of Teddy Bears", and Carrie Horwood on "Carving in Stone". There is also the New Year Lunch to look forward to; an Afternoon Tea in Painswick, and a trip to the Everyman organised. Visitors and guests are always welcome at Guild meetings; phone Linda on 617701, or just come along to the next meeting.
