If you would like some help in loosing a few of those Christmas pounds, Slimming World hold a number of classes in the local area, see their advert on page 20 to discover where they are. Dave’s top tips

10

How to stop the smell and gurgling from your sink or basin. A very popular question is " How can I stop my basin/shower gurgling when I pull the plug out?" To solve this problem it’s a good idea to know what causes the problem. The water leaves the basin and begins its run into the trap underneath. This trap has water in it, which stops smells coming back up through the pipes into the room through the plughole. When the water from the basin passes through the trap, it begins its run to the main waste pipe and out into the external manholes and main sewers. Some of this journey is made through (inside the building) vertical pipes and sometimes through pipes that have rather more than the 1 in 40 slope, which is recommended for foul water drainage. This encourages the water to run very quickly and sometimes this causes a vacuum behind the flow. This vacuum sucks at the water that remains in the trap. Most often this "sucking" causes the water in the trap to bubble and gurgle - hence the gurgling noise. Sometimes the water is sucked out of the trap completely and this is when foul gasses can get back into the room. Fitting an air inlet valve is easy. The pipe from the trap can be cut (as near to the trap as possible) and a Tee piece inserted. The air inlet valve is then fixed to the top of a vertical length of pipe from the Tee piece. When the valve is fitted the water runs away as before but instead of the vacuum sucking water from the trap it just sucks air which is admitted through the valves. This allows the water to run away noiselessly from basin, bath and shower hence little or no disturbance to the water in the trap and no foul smells coming back through the plughole. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club Our new Garden Club year kicks off on Thursday 23rd January, with a talk given by Colin Olle on the National Garden Scheme, its history with particular reference to Gardens in Gloucestershire. As a background it is fantastic to know that the Gloucestershire gardens contribution to the NGS was some ÂŁ1m over an eleven year period. This contribution formed part of the ÂŁ55m donated by the NGS to nursing and caring charities since it was set up in 1927. In February we have the welcome return of Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries. Jon has given many talks to the Garden Club over the past years and this time his theme is Spring Gardening Tips. After the bleakness of the Winter season it is a real tonic to think about the Spring and all the potential of flowers and colour at last, about to be realised in our own gardens and to see the results of all those bulbs planted in the Autumn If you fancy picking up some gardening tips for the New Year, enjoying a nice cup of tea or coffee, and taking part in our very popular raffle, then do come along. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre. For more info please contact either Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD We are a friendly group of local ladies, who meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. The evening meetings include a speaker or demonstration, a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments, and time to chat and catch up with friends. We rounded off the year with our Christmas Social Evening, and a Christmas Wreath Workshop, and start the New Year with a lunch at the Wesley House in Winchcombe. There are dates arranged for the bi-monthly Lunch Club, and the Ramblers' Group - weather permitting at this time of year, of course! Forthcoming speakers include Frances Seeney, on her travels around Vietnam and Cambodia. Our final speaker of 2019 was Mandy Marshall, of the Churchdown Chutney Company. Mandy gave a very entertaining talk on how her cottage industry came about, going from making chutneys to use up the surplus vegetables from her allotment to give as Christmas gifts, to now selling her wide range of chutneys, jams and mustards at local markets. Visitors and guests are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along - you'll be made very welcome!
