A bit about The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the July edition of your Hucclecote Link. So Summer should be just around the corner, and as I write this it looks like we are set for some Summer weather for the next couple of weeks, so fingers crossed! With us now going into the final few weeks of the academic year (I’m sure it goes quicker every year!) our thoughts start to turn towards the Summer holidays. If you are looking to get that beach body before your Summer holidays, we have a few companies that can help you achieve this, from personal fitness training on page 12, to a variety of Zumba classes with Jane or Regina on pages 12 & 17, there is something available for everyone. There are a number of beauty salons within the area that can also help you get Summer ready, from The Beauty Spot on page 12, Therapy by Sam Baggot on page 13 and Body Flair, also page 13, who have recently become award winners, so many congratulations to them, you can read more about this on their Facebook page. There are a few events taking place over the Summer that you may want to put in your diary. The NSPCC and Pied Piper are holding their annual Picnic Concert at Highnam Court in July, an evening of live music and laser shows, all the details of how to buy tickets are on page 31. If you enjoy music then pop along to an evening of Songs from the Shows taking place at St Lawrence Church in July see more on page 31. As always the Hucclecote Community Association have a variety of events taking place over the Summer months - find out more opposite on page 2. Secondly with Summer (hopefully) around the corner one of our garden maintenance companies, Jims Mowing, give us a little insight into their business and how they can help you. See page 21. If you have a business, and are thinking of advertising, why not take advantage of our offer to celebrate 5 Years of publishing our sister directory, The Tuffley Link. If you are still unsure about whether to advertise with us, take a look below at what the benefits of advertising with us are. Congratulations to Sheila Tombs, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 29. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Leaking gutters A common problem people are faced with after a heavy downpour of rain is that they find that their guttering starts to leak. This can simply just be a case of the gutter overflowing due to a build up of debris such as moss getting trapped, usually in the downpipe on a bend. Of course an easy fix is just to get it cleaned out. Another cause can be where the seals on a union (joint) have perished over the years and this is usually indicated by a constant dripping from the joint long after the rain has stopped. Many people may be tempted to try and seal the joint with a silicone sealant but this is rarely a long term fix. Also this makes a replacement at a later date more difficult as the old cured sealant must be removed from the guttering. The only real answer is to replace the offending union along with new seals that come with them. Many brands of guttering joints etc are of a fairly standard size but not all, so you may be lucky with just unclipping the joint and unscrewing the unit from the fascia. Replacement is the reverse procedure, you will however need a head for heights and good sturdy ladders, if you have neither then it may be best to leave it to a tradesman to give you a proper repair. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Dunkirk In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. 24th July 2017

Captain Underpants George Beard and Harold Hutchins are two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours in a tree house creating comic books. Hucclecote Scout News Ten Scouts passed their cyclist badge, they had to demonstrate control of a bike and know basic maintenance & Highway code questions. Only one scout knew the traffic lights exactly and their meaning (do you, I have to stop and think!) With 7 older Scouts going into the Explorer Unit in September, they have all gained their Chief Scout Challenge badge, which is the highest badge in the Scout Section. Their aim now is to gain the Queen Scout Award and go to Windsor Castle where the Queen or a member of the Royal family present the award after the march through Windsor on St Georges Day. We have not had any for a few years, this can be linked with the D of E award. The cubs are off to Cranham for a weekend camp at the end of June, hope they have good weather as they are now in tents. By now all money for Summer camp plus pocket money should be in, it is easy to loose money at camp but we have to organise local bank so it can be drawn out when required. If money is not in next week, Scouts will have to look after it themselves. Details of Father/Mother camp are not out again, money MUST be in by first Friday in July. Camp is at Cranham in patrols of own unit, cooking on open fires, partners and others welcome to come up to the camp fire on the Saturday night at 7.30pm. The Explorers built a Pioneer bridge at the Hucclecote Summer Fete which was enjoyed by all the children. Scouts finish the same week as the schools break up and start back at the same time. All boys and girls between 6 and 14 welcome to come along to their age range section and give Scouting a go. Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

GLOUCESTER LADIES PROBUS CLUB We are a friendly group which meets at the St Lawrence Parish Centre, Barnwood on the first and third Wednesday of each month except August. Coffee and tea are available from 10am until the meetings commence at 10 30am. We have talks on various subjects which last for approximately 1 hour. Examples of some talks in the near future are:- Mogul Palaces in Rajastan The People who put Gloucester on the map. The Korean War. For more information please contact either; Chairman Janice Herriman 01452 617170 or Programme Secretary Pam Street on 01452 611564.

Hucclecote Garden Club Our last speaker - Paul Green - who runs his own specialist Nursery on the outskirts of Newent, came armed with a fantastic variety of perennial plants from his Nursery for sale, and with useful tips on care and planting advice on each individual plant. Paul trained at Pershore College and his knowledge and experience of running his own Nursery was quite an eye-opener. He delivered his talk with great humour too, and was able to answer all of the questions posed by members. We have Mr. Bob Champion speaking to us next month on his speciality - Fuchsia's. Bob is also a well respected Horticultural Judge and is very involved with the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies, he also judges our Summer Produce Show in August. On the 27th July Sue Dodd and Sue Smith are in Hucclecote again giving their talk 'Not so Common on the Common', the rarer plants of Gloucestershire and where to find them. The Sue's have visited us before and were a revelation on the Butterflies and Moths to be found in the county the last time they came to the Garden Club. If you love gardening, or are a bit of a novice, please come along, where you can hopefully pick up a few gardening tips or just chat about plants. Further details from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. We meet on the fourth Thursday each month at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm. To advertise call 01452 890242

The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information. Details of this year's events - the St John's Players, the Ramblers' next walk, the Hucclecote Show, the Lunch Club and the inter-Guild Skittles match were given, and our next speaker will be Brian McBurnie, on "Barnwood - Then and Now". Our chosen charity this year is to raise funds for a second defibrillator in Hucclecote, at Glenville Parade, and plans are well under way for the Summer Fashion Show to raise funds for this very worthwhile project. Tickets are now on sale. Guests and visitors are very welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information - or just come along! Please mention
