A bit about The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the June edition of your Hucclecote Link. So Summer should be round the corner, but as I write this I still have the heating on - so I’m not holding my breath yet! But with us now going into the final term of the academic year (I’m sure it goes quicker every year!) our thoughts start to turn towards the Summer holidays. So if you are looking to get that beach body before your Summer holidays, we have a few companies that can help you achieve this, from personal fitness training on page 12, to Zumba classes with Jane on page 16 or joining Spirit Health club, on page 27, there is something available for everyone. There are a few events taking place over the Summer that you may want to put in your diary. Starting this month with The Hucclecote Show on 17th June. Pop along to the King George V playing fields for a day of fun - more details on page 13. The NSPCC and Pied Piper are holding their annual Picnic Concert at Highnam Court in July, an evening of live music and laser shows, all the details of how to buy tickets are on page 31. If you enjoy music then pop along to an evening of Songs from the Shows taking place at St Lawrence Church in July see more on page 31. We have a couple of write ups on local businesses this month. Firstly local beauty salon, Body Flair have won a ‘Best Salon in the Uk’ award - many congratulations to them & you can read more about this on page 16. Secondly with Summer (hopefully) around the corner one of our garden maintenance companies, Jims Mowing, give us a little insight into their business and how they can help you. See page 21. If you have a business, and are thinking of advertising, why not take advantage of our 25%off 6 month package offer below and let us help you grow your business over the rest of the year. If you are still unsure about whether to advertise with us, take a look below at what the benefits of advertising with us are. Congratulations to Sheila Tombs, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 29. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Leaking gutters A common problem people are faced with after a heavy downpour of rain is that they find that their guttering starts to leak. This can simply just be a case of the gutter overflowing due to a build up of debris such as moss getting trapped, usually in the downpipe on a bend. Of course an easy fix is just to get it cleaned out. Another cause can be where the seals on a union (joint) have perished over the years and this is usually indicated by a constant dripping from the joint long after the rain has stopped. Many people may be tempted to try and seal the joint with a silicone sealant but this is rarely a long term fix. Also this makes a replacement at a later date more difficult as the old cured sealant must be removed from the guttering. The only real answer is to replace the offending union along with new seals that come with them. Many brands of guttering joints etc are of a fairly standard size but not all, so you may be lucky with just unclipping the joint and unscrewing the unit from the fascia. Replacement is the reverse procedure, you will however need a head for heights and good sturdy ladders, if you have neither then it may be best to leave it to a tradesman to give you a proper repair. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The May Day camp near the Glasshouse went well, with good weather although the tents were damp at the end of camp. The Scouts walked to the top of May Hill and counted the trees (there are more than the fable say, that there is only 99). With cooking on open fires and an incident hike, it was soon time to pack up camp. Scouts went climbing at the Climbing Centre and after the high wall when they have a safety rope on, they went on the climbing wall. With 26 on the Summer camp in Yorkshire, all the activities and visits have been booked, so all we want is good weather. All boys and girls between 6 and 14 welcome to come along to their age range section and give Scouting a go. Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

Hucclecote Garden Club Hucclecote Methodist Bring and Buy Plant Sale held last month, did really well and raised well over ÂŁ1400. The Garden Club had a table of assorted plants, from tomatoes, courgettes, cowslips, foxgloves and many perennials for sale, most of which we sold. There were a few plants left which the Committee took home to nurture and bring along to our table at the Hucclecote Show on the 17th June. The Garden Club helps out with the garden maintenance of the Pink Bungalow in Hucclecote, which is situated next to the Methodist Church. We have been looking after the garden for the residents there, cutting the grass, weeding and generally keeping the garden tidy. We were really pleased to receive a lovely box of biscuits from one of the residents as a thank you gift, which we will share with our Members at our next meeting. Our last speaker, Richard Baldwin from Worcester, who had had a career in plant research, came along to our May meeting to talk about Organic Gardening. Some of us within the Garden Club do try to garden organically and Richard was able to give us many useful tips. The Hucclecote Community Show is not far off now - on the 17th June - and we are all busily growing plants, seeds and gathering together assorted garden equipment for sale on our Table at the Show. Do come along and see us on the day, for any gardening advice or plants for your garden. Details from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

Our speaker last month was Alison Apperley who gave us a demonstration on Fabric covered boxes and Encaustic Art. Encaustic art is a waxed based paint used for decorative effects on various absorbent materials when heated, very interesting and some of us were lucky to have a go. We have a skittles evening planned for later this month and lots of other things happening this coming year, such as a bowls and buffet night, a strawberry tea and a host of forthcoming speakers. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on Gloucester 613208 or Ellen on Gloucester 611976 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you. Or if you feel that you would like to come along, just pop in and you would be made very welcome. Ps. The meeting on June 8th will now take place on June 1st – because of the general election.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday every month, at 7.30pm. Our speakers cover a wide range of interests and topics, and there is the opportunity to socialise over tea, coffee and biscuits. We also organise outings and other social events throughout the year. At our recent meeting, the minutes of the AGM were read and approved, and the new Committee members announced. Forthcoming events include the Ramblers' Group, a coffee morning and a trip to the St John's Players in Churchdown. Forthcoming speakers include Allan Wells on "The May Hill Apiary", and Brian McBurnie on "Barnwood Then and Now" Our speaker was Suzanne Trenchard, who demonstrated the art of soap-making using the "Melt and Pour" method. The soaps are made in silicone cake moulds, and contain soap dye and essential oils for fragrance. The results, and Suzanne's display of beautiful soaps she'd made earlier (in true Blue Peter style!), looked like slices of cake, cupcakes and delicious puddings! Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along! Please mention
