Dave’s top tips Frozen Condensate Pipe Over the last few cold months I have had a number of calls from people who have had problems with their boiler breaking down. The culprit boilers tend to be the modern and now common condensing combination type boiler. This is the type that heats water on demand with no immersion tank or loft header tank. The problem has been due to the extreme cold weather we have had over the last few years causing the condensate pipe to freeze and causing the boiler to shut down. This affects both hot water and heating. The cure should it happen is usually to thaw the pipe with warm water untill the condensate within the pipe runs freely, then a quick press of the reset button upon restarting the boiler and all should be well. However prevention is better than cure, So wherever possible exposed condensate pipe should be treated in the same manner as exposed water pipe and be properly lagged to prevent the ice forming within the pipe. An even better solution is to relocate the pipework so as it runs inside the building and flows into an internal trap such as you would find under the sink. This then mixes the hot waste water from the sink with the cold condensate and is in much less danger of freezing. Things to bear in mind are to ensure the new pipework runs downhill with no air traps as this can in itself cause a boiler to shut down. Also the water should be expelled into a sewerage drain rather than a fresh rainwater drain. A little bit of thought now could save many a cold night with no heating and a lot less aggravation in the future. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The trip to 10 pin Bowling at a reduced price for those who helped with bag packing at Sainsburys went well, with various skills showing up from the 16 Scouts. Our Winter Wonderland Scout meeting went well with curling (frozen Milk containers) snow ball fights (plastic balls), ice hockey (frozen balloon), snow tunnel (crawling along passage of chairs covered in canvas) and making a snowman (covering a Scout with unrolling a toilet roll) Our next main event is the Founders Day Celebration when the whole group meet at the H.Q for an indoor camp fire with each unit putting on an item. The afternoon ends with refreshments, all friends and past Scouts welcome to come along at 2.30 on Sunday 26th February. Plans for our May Day Camp (1st weekend in May) at a local farm, with 27 now coming to Summer camp in Yorkshire, nearly the whole troop will be on camp. With new campers learning about real camping with open fires and plenty of activities. The older Scouts learning how to run a patrol of 6 and camp at our usual standards and be top Patrol in the point system. All great fun and is the best part of Scouting with scouts learning to become resilient in a fun way. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have any children (boys and girls) interested in coming along for an evening of interesting games and activities. Age range 6 to 14.

Hucclecote Garden Club Our New Year kicked off with an old favourite of the Club, Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries who came along to talk on Fruit Trees. We have a real treat for February when Steve Quinton, Head Gardener from Rococo Gardens, Painswick, is giving us a talk on the history of the Gardens and hopefully tips on growing snowdrops and cyclamen, which carpet the grass within the Gardens. Many visitors from Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties make the annual trip to the Rococo Gardens to see the wonderful snowdrop display. Our Annual General Meeting takes place in March, when we have a representative from the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies - a body which we as a local Garden Club are affiliated to - paying us a visit and giving us an insight into the work of the Society and its many local connections. The Society have a regular Stand at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival and are a well respected organization, with a List of Speakers from as far afield as Chepstow and Exeter as well are more local Speakers from Churchdown and even Hucclecote. Anyone interested in gardening is most welcome. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month in Hucclecote Community Centre, To advertise call 01452 890242 7.30pm. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Our first meeting of the New Year was well attended, and we were pleased to welcome nine visitors! Guests and visitors are always welcome, and we hope to see these new faces at our future meetings. The Guild meets at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month, when we have speakers covering a wide range of topics and interests, tea coffee and biscuits, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Outings and other events are organised throughout the year. Our speaker this month was Lyn Cinderey, on "Gloucester Ghost Walks". Lyn has studied the paranormal for many years, has appeared on television, and has published books on the subject. Her stories about the ghosts of Gloucester included sightings in the New Inn, Cafe Rene, St Michaels Tower and the Black Cat Bar in the Dick Whittington. Lyn, as Gloucester's "Ghost Lady", has led walks around these locations for many years; we were lucky to have her tell us about them in a well-lit warm room!
