Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the March edition of your Hucclecote Link….. I’d like to say Spring is around the corner, but it certainly doesn’t feel like that at the moment! The nights are starting to pull out though, so that is a positive. As the weather starts to improve and with the bank holiday weekend at the end of the month, this is always a time of year when we start to look at the outdoor jobs that we may have neglected over the Winter months. If you are looking for someone to help get your garden back to it’s glory we have plenty of gardeners on hand who can help you - find them all in our index on page 30. Maybe the rendering on your house could do with a clean after the storms that we had over the Winter. Al’s Window Cleaning on page 16 can help brighten your home again with their soft wash system. Perhaps you feel that it is yourself that has been neglected over the Winter months - well we have plenty of beauty therapists who can put the Spring back in your step. Or why not pop along to Hardings Hair and Beauty Salon, formally Steampunk Rooms, based in Quedgeley. They have just rebranded, so read more about them on pages 18 & 19 and take advantage of their offers available to new customers. Congratulations to Laura Kleister , for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Have a great month - Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Frozen Condensate Pipe Over the last few cold months I have had a number of calls from people who have had problems with their boiler breaking down. The culprit boilers tend to be the modern and now common condensing combination type boiler. This is the type that heats water on demand with no immersion tank or loft header tank. The problem has been due to the extreme cold weather we have had over the last few years causing the condensate pipe to freeze and causing the boiler to shut down. This affects both hot water and heating. The cure should it happen is usually to thaw the pipe with warm water untill the condensate within the pipe runs freely, then a quick press of the reset button upon restarting the boiler and all should be well. However prevention is better than cure, So wherever possible exposed condensate pipe should be treated in the same manner as exposed water pipe and be properly lagged to prevent the ice forming within the pipe. An even better solution is to relocate the pipework so as it runs inside the building and flows into an internal trap such as you would find under the sink. This then mixes the hot waste water from the sink with the cold condensate and is in much less danger of freezing. Things to bear in mind are to ensure the new pipework runs downhill with no air traps as this can in itself cause a boiler to shut down. Also the water should be expelled into a sewerage drain rather than a fresh rainwater drain. A little bit of thought now could save many a cold night with no heating and a lot less aggravation in the future.
Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

John Morris was presented with presented with an award for 25 years in scouting. Terry was also presented with two rose bushes for his 80th birthday and for 69 years with the group and still fairly active. All looking forward to the warmer weather when we can start doing outside activities. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have anyone interested in joining the Group, boys and girls age 6 to 14.
Hucclecote Garden Club We were certainly gifted with a treat when Duncan Coombs came to the Club to talk on Wall Climbers and Shrubs in January. His talk was a mixture of slides and personal/professional experience as a retired Lecturer in Decorative Horticulture at Pershore College. His knowledge was put to the test with a variety of questions from Members which he handled with humour and ease. He could have carried on speaking until midnight and we would have been more than happy to listen, but we had to close at 9.00pm! We hope to have Duncan back next year with another of his wonderful talks on Japanese Gardens. Plans for our 2018 Trip to Powis Castle and Gardens are well underway and we hope to make the visit on Friday 8th June. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust will be coming along to our AGM in March to talk on the Flora of Gloucestershire and its Conservation, all are welcome on the 22nd March to hear what our Garden Club is all about. We continue to meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in Hucclecote Community Centre, do come along and pick up a few gardening tips, have a good cup of tea/coffee and have-a-go at our Raffle. More information from Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

At our February meeting we were treated to talk on ‘The Golden Age of British Dance Bands’ given by Pam Street, she relived the decades from the 1920’s through to the 1960’s, this also included snippets of music that were very popular at that time. While in America Dance Bands had had their day by the 1940’s, in the UK the Bands were still in great demand until about the 1960’s when the new era of Rock and Roll took over. We have an outing planned in the next week to see the snowdrops in all their glory. We have lots of different speakers on many varied subjects. There will also be meals out, coffee mornings, skittles, quiz teams, and cream teas for the warmer weather, so lots of things to look forward to. After all our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD After the Christmas break, the Guild started 2018 with a talk by Lorraine Hitchings, on The History of Teddy Bears. Lorraine is a collector of teddy bears, author and TV documentary maker, who outlined the evolution of teddy bears from their origins in Germany and in America in the early 1900s. She brought examples of the black "mourning bears" sold in Harrods to mark the sinking of the Titanic; "soldier bears" with upward-looking faces small enough to fit in a uniform pocket in WW1, the more traditional teddies of the '50s and early '60s, and the health and safety compliant ones from the mid-60s. She also told us about Jeremy Clarkson's link to Paddington Bear! We also enjoyed our New Year's Lunch at Bowden Hall, a lovely meal at a beautiful venue. The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month. We have a wide range of speakers and demonstrations booked for the forthcoming year, and always have a "bring & buy" sales table, refreshments, a raffle and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Our next speakers include"Carving in Stone" by Carrie Horwood and "Roman Medicine" by Stefan Urbanowski. Visitors are always welcome, phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night.
