Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the March edition of your Hucclecote Link. At last the nights are starting to pull out and this past week there has certainly been a feeling that Spring may be just around the corner, lets hope it continues that way. I don’t know about you, but it certainly seems to help with the mood when the weather is better. We even managed to cut our grass last week! It is this time of year when we start to venture outside again and realise all the work that needs doing in our gardens. If you have work that you need doing in your gardens and feel that it’s too much for you to cope with, we have plenty of landscape gardeners, lawn men and property maintenance businesses that can help you get on top of everything - just take a look at our index on page 38 to help find what you are looking for. Don’t forget Mother’s day at the end of this month - Bowden Hall Hotel are holding a special lunch which includes a gift for mum, so if you are looking to book something special, more details can be found on page 18. If you are thinking of what to buy for Mother’s Day , we have a range of beauty therapists advertising with us, who all offer various gift vouchers or packages. Touch of Beauty are an new salon based in Brockworth, they are running an offer on massages this March, see page 15 for more info. Congratulations to Nick Stafford, the winner of last months Sudoku competition, Cineworld tickets will be with you soon. Have a great month... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Working safely
DIY enthusiasts need the same protection as tradesmen. This includes protective goggles and gloves, protective masks and ear protectors. Dust, sprays, and flying chips are not uncommon in DIY work – which is why you should protect your eyes. Standard protective goggles are usually sufficient. When performing work like sawing, sanding or chiselling, you should not underestimate the risk of possible hand injuries caused by chips. Full protection is only offered by special protective gloves. You should not wear any gloves when using hand-held circular saws, belt sanders and drills because they can get caught in the rotating tools. Don't forget breathing protection: When drilling, sawing, sanding, planing or routing, you should protect your lungs with a disposable protective mask – even better with a fine dust mask. When dealing with insulation wool or solvent-based paints and varnishes, masks with activated carbon filters provide the best protection. Don’t forget the strain put on your ears when drilling, sawing, sanding, etc. Earplugs are sufficient for sporadic use. If you frequently work with noise-intensive power tools, it is advisable to use ear muffs. Wear the right clothes: They should be comfortable, tight-fitting and flameproof. Watches and jewellery are dangerous and should be taken off before you begin with the work. For your own safety, tie up long hair to prevent it getting caught up in running machines. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month. At each meeting there is a speaker or demonstration covering a wide range of interests; a raffle, the bring-and -buy sales table, refreshments and the opportunity to chat and socialise. During the year, we also organise theatre trips, lunches and outings. 2019 has got off to a flying start, with a New Year's Lunch at Hatton Court, when we were joined by our friends from the Saintbridge Guild. Our speaker at our first meeting of the year was Malcolm Watkins, on "The Birdlip Grave Group" - a collection of medieval artefacts of national and global importance, which were found at Birdlip in 1879, and which are now housed in the City Museum. The artefacts include an amber bead necklace, rings, brooches, bowls, tweezers and a mirror. Malcolm's enlarged photos, and in-depth knowledge, will make a visit to see the items very worthwhile. We were pleased to present a cheque to Gloucestershire Young Carers, our chosen charity for last year, for over £300. Visitors and guests are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night! To advertise call 01452 617040

Hucclecote Garden Club At last we can look forward to the clocks going forward at the end of the month, and for us gardeners a little more light in the evenings to sort out our overgrown borders, and identify our prize specimens from the weeds. This is certainly a very busy time of year for the gardener. At the end of the month we have our Annual General Meeting, where we can look back at our activities over the past year and plan ahead for 2019 and beyond. Once we have finished our 'business' we look forward to hearing what Gloucester Organic Gardening Group do, as we have Elaine coming from the Group to give us an insight into what goes on. Some of our members are part of this Group and certainly enjoy attending the meetings. We are in the throws of organizing our Trip to Wells and The Bishop's Palace later in the year and look forward to promoting the Garden Club at some of the local community activities For more details please ring Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on 543573 Please mention
