Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the May edition of your Hucclecote Link. The month of Birthdays and Bank Holidays! This year it seems that all our bank holidays are coming at once. No sooner is Easter over with and then the May Day bank holiday is upon us, with Whitsun at the end of the month! Still with 6 of my family members celebrating birthdays this month, including myself, and with the Hucclecote Link now celebrating its 12 year of publishing this month too, the bank holidays will come in handy for holding those celebrations. With the Hucclecote Link celebrating 12 years - I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who have helped us get to this point. The local businesses who put their trust in us helping them to promote their businesses, our fantastic team of distributers who ensure the Links are delivered regularly and to YOU the reader, for picking up the phone and using our great local business that we have in and around Gloucester. Thank you very much for all your support, please continue to keep using LOCAL businesses for future years to come. If you have an occasion to celebrate, keep an eye on the events that the Hucclecote Community Association are running, see opposite page - there’s always something on for all the family. Bowden Hall, on page 9, are holding themed dinners, or if you just fancy a night out playing skittles, see more details on page 33. Congratulations to AA Swift, the winner of last months Sudoku competition, Cineworld tickets will be with you soon. Have a great month... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Drilling large holes
Larger holes are often required when installing switches or laying pipes. For this reason, special drill bit shapes and special material are necessary. If you want to work on wood or soft plastic, you will require not only an impact drill but also special accessories – what are known as hole cutters or hole saws. These enable you to drill in soft materials such as fiberboard or wood. Accessories made of High Speed Steel (HSS) should be used for working on metal and hard plastics. A tungsten-carbide multi-purpose drill bit is recommended for drilling in stone or tiles. It is also suitable for hard woods, wooden materials and coated boards. The harder the material, the higher the frictional forces between the material and the bit. Therefore, water has to be used to cool the holes being drilled in tiles or concrete. Large holes that are drilled in metal are lubricated and cooled with a special drill emulsion, lubricating paste or machine oil. Safety is paramount: Due to the large circumference of the drill bits, much greater forces occur during work than in normal drilling applications. Modern drills have such high power that they cannot be held if they get jammed. This is why you should drill with an auxiliary handle attached. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Garden Club We have some great Speakers coming to our Garden Club over the next few months with Bill Laws from Hereford giving us a most intriguing talk on 'The Curious History of Vegetables' later this month. The back-story to our vegetables is anything but mundane. From guinea gardens to GM seeds, and from aphrodisiacs to naked allotment holders, no stone is left unturned!! The mind boggles. We look forward to a fun evening. In June we have Brian Skeys from Worcester speaking on Wild Gardens - from William Robinson to Piet Oudolf. Piet Oudolf recently designed one of his 'Wild Gardens' for the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show Do come along to our Garden Club we meet on the fourth Thursday each month at Hucclecote Community Centre, at 7.30pm. For further information please ring either Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 617040

The ‘Severn Freewheelers’ which is our chosen charity for this year gave us a talk on what they do. They are a group of volunteer riders who we thought only delivered blood. @The Blood Bikes’ as they are sometimes called, also carry babies milk which is used for premature babies, medicines and anything else that is needed urgently by the NHS to whereever it is needed all across the country. They are not funded by the government or by the NHS, so they have to rely totally on dontation and we are very happy to support them. Other things we have throughout the year will be; floral arrangements, coffee mornings, skittles, bowls and buffet, a strawberry tea, and days out for lunch or shopping and then lunch which is always a winner. After the speakers we have refreshments, a raffle and also some time to chat and socialise. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm, visitors and guests are very welcome. For more information phone Beverley on 01452 63208 or just pop in to see us.

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. At each meeting we have a speaker or demonstration, covering a wide range of topics and interests; a raffle, the bring-and-buy sales table, refreshments and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Our most recent speaker was Sue Smith, on "Wild Flowers of the Cotswolds", a very interesting talk illustrated with beautiful slides of the many and varied wild flowers which grow in such abundance locally. Sue told of the folklore attached to some, and about which to encourage in our gardens for the benefit of bees, butterflies and other wildlife. The AGM also took place, with the announcement of the new Committee, and the next year's programme of speakers - as always, there will be something for everyone! Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. Phone Linda on 617701 for more information, or just come along on the night! Please mention
