A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the May edition of your Hucclecote Link. The Hucclecote Link is celebrating 10 years of being in circulation this month which is a great achievement and makes me very proud. I would like to take this opportunity though to say a big thank you to all of you who have made this possible. To the business owners for putting your trust into the Link Directories and the letting us spread the word about you into the local community. To my great team of distributors who ensure that you receive the directories on a regular basis, and to You, the reader, who pick up the phone and use the great local businesses that advertise in the directories. Without your support many of the business (including my own!) would struggle to keep going - so I thank you very much and hope that the Hucclecote Link will continue to be in circulation giving you access to local businesses for many years to come. This month sees us celebrate 2 bank holidays, which is always a great time to catch up with friends and families, but also an English tradition to try our hand at DIY! If you are looking to get some work done on your home, whether it’s painting and decorating, fitting new cabinets, or some work around the garden, then take a look throughout our directory or at our index on page 34, we have many great local businesses that can help you out and free up your time to enjoy those bank holidays with friends and families! As always, if you are looking to take up a new activity or join a new club, our what’s on pages, on pages 32 - 33, always have a variety of clubs that take place locally. This month we also have 2 great charities promoting local events - The James Hopkins Trust have their annual Golf Day in May, see page 31 and Linc are promoting their 3 Counties Cycle Ride in June on page 36. If you have a business, and are thinking of advertising, why not take advantage of our 10th Birthday offer below and get 6 months advertising for the price of 4. If you are still unsure about whether to advertise with us, take a look below at what the benefits of advertising with us are. Congratulations to Julia Pollington, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 25. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month & enjoy those bank holidays! Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Hard to reach screws ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

If you find you have to get a screw into a tricky position or corner here’s a quick tip to hold the screw to the blade of the screwdriver. Take a piece of masking tape and push the screw through it with the sticky side of the tape face up. Then insert the screwdriver blade into the screw slot and fold the masking tape up to stick the screw to the blade. The screw is then held in position on the driver and can be inserted upside down and at an angle. If possible it is much easier to start the screw off if you can make a small pilot hole somehow. Another and better option would be to invest in a magnetic bit holder to hold the screws. This latter option will not work however with things such as brass screws. Regards Dave Stevens.

If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The ten Scouts on the Ski sessions did very well and all came from the top of the slope after the four weeks. The first meeting after the clocks changed, the patrols put up the patrol tents as a practice ready for May Day weekend camp near May Hill. With 23 scouts on camp there were only a couple who could not make it. Very pleased with the three Cubs who have just come up to Scouts, most of them coming on camp, also the three from outside of the movement. The Patrol Leaders ran a very good camp fire for new Scouts to learn some of the Scout songs, although a few new ones, many are traditional camp fire songs. The meeting making Easter biscuits on an open fire went well. With numbers for Summer camp slowly creeping up, with 23 also on the camp with several seeing how they get on May Day camp. In September 6 Scouts go into the Explorers which will be better for all the new Scouts. With the lighter nights we will be outside every meeting unless wet with cooking on open fires, stream activities and Painswick Beacon. All boys and girls between 6 and 14 welcome to come along to their age range section and give Scouting a go. Phone Terry on 521664 for more details.

GLOUCESTER LADIES PROBUS CLUB We are a friendly group which meets at the St Lawrence Parish Centre, Barnwood on the first and third Wednesday of each month except August. Coffee and tea are available from 10am until the meetings commence at 10 30am. We have talks on various subjects which last for approximately 1 hour. Examples of some talks in the near future are:- Mogul Palaces in Rajastan The People who put Gloucester on the map. The Korean War. For more information please contact either; Chairman Janice Herriman 01452 617170 or Programme Secretary Pam Street on 01452 611564.

Hucclecote Garden Club As I write this, we are experiencing a mini-heatwave in Hucclecote and many other parts of the country. The garden is very very dry, which is a good opportunity to cut the grass without fear of a sudden downpour, but has the drawback of the need for constant watering of our pots and favourite plants in the garden. We held our Annual General Meeting of the Garden Club at the end of March, which was well attended by Members and other interested gardeners. We were fortunate to have two Speakers from the Gloucestershire Federation of Garden Societies Rod Wells and John Wilson, who gave us between them a potted history of the Society and the great work they do in the area with Schools and other Garden Societies. May is quite a busy month for us as we have a Table of lovely plants for sale as well as gardening advice for those interested, at the Hucclecote Methodist Churches Bring and Buy Plant Sale on Monday 1st May, 11.00am to 2.00pm in the Church Hall. We also look forward to welcoming Paul Green to speak to us about his own Specialist Nursery in Newent, Paul will be bringing along a selection of his plants for sale, so come armed with plenty of cash. Do come along to the Club, we meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the fourth Thursday of the month. Details from Sue on 543573 or Joy on 553185. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

Our adopted charity this year is ‘The James Hopkins Trust’ and Ria Heap from the charity gave a talk on what they do and the fund raising that happens throughout the year. It was a very emotional talk as the charity supports young children with terminal illnesses, also supporting the parents at this difficult and emotional time. The Larkhay WI is very pleased to support them with fund raising throughout the year. We have lots of things happening this coming year such as a bowls and buffet night, a strawberry tea and a host of forthcoming speakers. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on Gloucester 613208 or Ellen on Gloucester 611976 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you. Or if you feel that you would like to come along, just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

Glevum Probus Club for Men We are a friendly non political club which meets at the St Lawrence Church Centre, Barnwood on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month throughout the year with the exception of December when on the 2nd Wednesday in that month the AGM ends the year. Coffee, tea and biscuits are served from 10am and the meetings commence at 10.30am and last for 1 to 1 ¼ hours dependant on the speaker.

Future talks are on the following subjects. May 10th - Tim Mowat - Revolution in Communications. May 24th - David Thorp - The Boer War June14th - David Hannon - My later life in Broadcasting. June28th - Brian Lamerton - Antartica If you require any further information please feel free to contact

Terry Cruttenden on 01452 612432

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month. Members, guests and visitors are always welcome; we have speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, tea, coffee and biscuits, and an opportunity to chat and socialise. Forthcoming speakers include Suzanne Trenchard on Soap Making, and Allan Wells on the May Hill Apiary. The AGM was held at the last meeting, with the new programme of speakers announced, as well as some of the events planned for the forthcoming year. Our chosen charity for this year is to fund a defibrillator to be sited at the Glenville Parade shops. It was a pleasure to welcome back Marion Beagley as our speaker, whose subject - "English is a crazy language" - was both amusing and informative. Some of our words and phrases have some unusual origins, and although we use them every day, must make very little sense to someone who learns English as a second language. Phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information, or just come along to our next meeting. You will be made very welcome. Please mention
