A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Welcome to the November edition of your Hucclecote Link. It’s that time of year again when the clocks go back and Winter starts to feel like it’s setting in. How many of you have already turned the heating on I wonder! I know it’s on first thing in the morning in this house, it’s the only way to get us all up and out of bed! If you are looking to get your boiler checked, we have plenty of good plumbers in the directory, they can be found on our index on page 34. Or perhaps you are thinking about getting new double glazing this year to keep you warm and cosy through the Winter, C&L Windows, on page 19 have a new show room in Gloucester, why not pop down and take a look. Can you believe it’s Christmas next month! Where did that year go? If you are looking to get out and about over the coming months, and do some things to get you in the Christmas spirit, the Hucclecote Community Association are holding a variety of events, to see more of what’s on offer and place some dates in your diary, see their advert on the opposite page. As usual we have a variety of local clubs promoting their monthly events on pages 30 & 31, including the St Lawrence Church annual Autumn Fayre, which is taking place on Sat 12th November, see more details on page 31. If you are looking for a night out, I can recommend the Spicy Kalkata restaurant in Longlevens, they are now taking bookings for Christmas and New Year and Hucclecote Link readers can enjoy a 20% discount on both takeaways and dining in, with their advert. See their offer on the front cover. If you have a business that is looking to promote your Christmas promotions or events. Well let us help you get into 1000’s of local homes during December. Dave’s top tips
Preparing for Autumn Preparing for the cold weather should be done now and your boiler, or other heating systems should be serviced (By a competent, registered person). Do not wait for cold weather to find out that something is not working properly as you may well find it a long cold wait trying to get it repaired. If you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft, make sure its working well by moving the float arm up and down a couple of times to make sure the valve lets in, and shuts off, the water. While you are in the loft, make sure you have at least 270mm of loft insulation and it is laid away from the roof eaves to let in air for loft ventilation. Check pipework in the loft is insulated and all stopcocks and gate valves (this applies to the whole house) are working properly by turning them off then back on again. Check all door and window draught proofing, including the letterbox and rectify as required. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Hucclecote Scout News The Father and Sons / Daughters camp was a great success and with friends and relations, the camp fire was the best ever with 150 all singing well. By the time you read this the annual Halloween bonfire, sing song and firework show will have been held, we hope for a dry night. The Scouts are starting their Autumn activities with Go Karting and Lazer Tag and Climbing in November. The Summer Camp site at Bradley Wood Scout camp in Yorkshire has now been booked and numbers are coming in well. The Scouts held a Conservation morning at Robinswood Hill and we cleared a good stretch of over grown paths. On 5th November we are at the Hucclecote Parish rooms, again helping to keep the place tidy after the Summer growth of the bushes and plants. The Explorers who moved up from the Scouts in July are now looking towards gaining the Queen Scout badge which is the highest badge in the Explorer section. In the Scouts, Alex Plant and Beau McGuire have nearly finished their Chief Scout award, again the top award in the Scout section. Please contact Terry on 521664 if you would like more information on the Group (ages 6 to 14 years, both boys and girls)
Hucclecote Garden Club Mr. David Coombs came along to the Garden Club to give the September talk to Members and he certainly did not disappoint, with a mixture of great pond and plant knowledge combined with a cheeky sense of humour. His talk entitled 'Ponds, Marginals and Bog Gardens' certainly enlightened those whose knowledge of ponds was very limited, with a great variety of slides showing vast lakes with beautiful water lillies to tiny garden ponds which could fit into the smallest garden. We were all surprised by the number of plants which could be happily accommodated near running and still water, and David brought along some sample plants and grasses which could be used. David invited questions from Members as he went along, which was great for those who had acquired a pond in a new garden, or for those who wanted a water feature, but did not know how to start such a project and which plants to use. We are approaching the end of our talks for 2016 and are very happy to welcome Mr. Ian Elphick, Gloucester City Council's Senior Countryside Ranger to speak to us on Thursday 27th October at 7.30pm, Ian has been in this role for a number of years and his knowledge of all things environmental is vast. Do come along on the 27th October and be prepared to be educated and enlightened. We meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of each month, coffee/tea and biscuits are served along with a raffle during the evening, our talks start at 7.30pm. For more information please ring Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

We are looking forward to our speaker this month which is about “A cabinet Of Curiosities” (not sure what‘s in the cabinet but no doubt it will be very interesting). Our wine tasting trip to Laithwaites went very well, we tried various different wines with the staff on hand to give us lots of info, and a merry evening was enjoyed by all. There is much activity now as we are hosting a group harvest supper at the end of October, which we have invited other W.I groups from the surrounding area to join us. We have different speakers on various subjects most months. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. Phone Ellen on 01452 611976 or Betty on 01452 698299 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you. Scottish Dancing at Kings School, Gouda Way, Gloucester. Tuesdays 7.30pm - 10.00pm. Beginners welcome. Cost £2.50 (Members £2) but first night FREE. New Session starts September 6. Contact 01452 306857 or see website http://www.gloucesterscd.btck.co.uk. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. We have a variety of speakers covering a wide range of subjects, a raffle, and the opportunity to socialise over tea, coffee and biscuits. Speakers at the forthcoming meetings include Anneliese Sterry of the Gloucester Foodbank, and Phil Collins on The History of Punch and Judy. Recently, we have taken part in the inter-Guild Skittles Tournament, and enjoyed at Charity Coffee Morning, and still ahead is the inter-Guild Quiz, the St John's Players production of "Ladies in Lavendar", and the Christmas Shopping Trip to Bath. Our most recent speakers were Peter and Karen Cornwall, of "Dogs for Good", previously Dogs for the Disabled. They were accompanied by two trainee assistance dogs, Hettie and Denby, and their trainers, and outlined how the charity trains three categories of Assistance Dogs at it's centre in Banbury; dogs who are paired with a disabled person; Community Dogs, who go into schools and centres, and Family Dogs, who are owned by families with an autistic child. In all three situations, trained assistance dogs can offer invaluable support. The charity relies solely on donations, and it costs £13,000 to train an 8 week old puppy until it's placement. Visitors, guests and new members are very welcome - phone Linday on 617701 for more information, or just come along! Please mention
