Fitting a shower tray When installing a shower tray it is best wherever possible, to place the tray on a firm base made of timber that allows access to the trap and pipework underneath. If this is the case with your shower it is relatively easy, and not hugely destructive, to remove the front or sides of the base to get at any potential leak later on if one should occur. It’s also best that the tray is installed before the walls are tiled as this allows for a much more watertight joint. Sit the tray and make sure it is level. The bottom of the tray is sloped to make sure the water runs out of the waste so you do not need to tilt it in any way. Insert the waste and connect it to the pipework you have prepared. The tray should sit on a bed of sealant or cement mix on a timber frame. Whether the tray is sitting on legs or on a base, the waste should be placed in a position where it can be accessed when necessary. For front access for example simply fitting skirting board across the timbers would be enough to hide any pipework. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. Gardening Tips for October from Garden Delight..

Flowers, Tubs and Borders •

Now is the time to plant out spring flowering bedding like Wallflowers, Stocks, forget-me - nots and pansies, try under planting them with winter and spring flowering bulbs to give extra colour. October is a great month for planting out new trees and shrubs, the ground is warm from the summer and the autumn rain will enable the plants to establish quickly. Is also a good month for moving any deciduous shrubs taking a good root ball replant firmly incorporating some good compost in the soil. Once the frost has blackened the leaves of Dahlias cut down the stems to about 6’’ and then lift and store in a frost free place ready for next year. Dusting the tubers with sulphur powder will help prevent rotting. Lift and divide large clumps of early flowering perennials/herbaceous plants, late flowering varieties are best left to the early spring. Replanting the divided clumps will give you new plants and increase the vigour of the older plants. Tall deciduous shrubs such as Rose, Buddleia and Lavetera should be cut back by a third this stops them rocking in the ground during the winter winds. If they do this a gap appears where the stem enters the soil, this gap can fill with water, freeze and then damage or even kill the plant.
Lawns • •
Reduce the frequency of mowing raising the blades high, by the end of the month it will be time to stop mowing all together and put the mower in for service ready for next year. If you haven’t already done so apply a good autumn lawn food which will help control moss and toughen the lawn up for the winter.
Fruit and Vegetables • • • •
Prune back Blackcurrants, Blackberries, Loganberries and Tayberrys train in the new canes to fruit next season Harvest and store pumpkins and marrows before the first frosts, sow cauliflower, peas and winter lettuce under cloches. Spray peach and nectarine trees with Dithane 945 to help prevent peach leaf curl. Dig over veg plots to allow the air and water to penetrate incorporating in any garden compost and manure this will work in over the winter as the frosts break down the soil.
Greenhouse • • •
Move inside any tender plants to over winter, ensure you watch out for the colder nights when you may need extra heat or need to apply fleece to give full protection. Water only when required and then in the morning only so that foliage does not remain wet over night. Ensure there is good ventilation to keep up air movement and prevent dampness, take down any shading and make sure the glass is nice and clean to take full advantage of the winter sun.

Hearts & Hurricanes WI The WI is as busy as ever, welcoming more new members and visitors at each meeting. August’s meeting was open to families, we baked gingerbread and made cake pops, it turned out to be fairly messy but fun! We were visited in September by Sarah Churchill of the Artisan Kitchen, a really interesting speaker who started a business from her own home in Gloucester making award winning jams and preserves http://www.theartisankitchen.co.uk/ We’re really looking forward to October’s meeting which is wine tasting. There’ll be 6 to 8 different wines on offer from around the world. Guess which continent the wine is from in a blind tasting and you could win a prize. There will also be nibbles on offer. This meeting is open to members, visitors and their partners. Tasting nights are always very popular and are just £3.00 per visitor. Come along and meet your neighbours. In November local ceramic artist Tara Davidson will be showing us how to make ceramic jewellery. Check out her website http://www.tarajaneceramics.com/ for more information on Tara and the lovely items she creates. New members are more than welcome at the WI. Join in October and get 3 months free. We meet on the second Wednesday of every month at Coopers Edge School at 7:30pm. Entry is free for members and £3 for non-members. October 2013 Release’s Friday 4th October SUNSHINE ON LEITH Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks star in a feelgood musical woven from the Proclaimers' uplifting hits. Ally (Kevin Guthrie) and Davy (George MacKay) are two young soldiers who return home to Leith after serving in Afghanistan. Ally goes out with Davy's sister, Liz (Freya Mavor), who introduces her brother to Yvonne (Antonia Thomas). Meanwhile, Liz and Davy's parents, Jean (Jane Horrocks) and Rab (Peter Mullan), are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Stephen Greenhorn's acclaimed jukebox stage musical took its title from the second album by Scottish musical heroes The Proclaimers. Their hits drive this moving story about the difficulties of adapting to Civvy Street. Actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher's big-screen adaptation was shot on location in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Among its stunning set-piece numbers is huge performance of 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' featuring 500 dancers outside the National Gallery of Scotland! This is also producer Andrew Macdonald's first film in Scotland since the legendary 'Trainspotting'.
Fri 18th October TURBO (3D) From the makers of MADAGASCAR and KUNG FU PANDA, TURBO is a high-velocity 3D comedy about a snail who dares to dream big - and fast. After a freak accident infuses him with the power of superspeed, Turbo kicks into overdrive and embarks on an extraordinary journey to achieve the seemingly impossible: competing in the world's fastest race, the Indianapolis 500. With the help of his tricked-out streetwise snail crew, this ultimate underdog puts his heart and shell on the line to prove that no dream is too big, and no dreamer too small
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS The true story of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the USflagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.
Friday 25th October CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS (3D) After the disastrous food storm in the first film, Flint and his friends are forced to leave the town. Flint accepts the invitation from his idol Chester V to join The Live Corp Company, which has been tasked to clean the island, and where the best inventors in the world create technologies for the betterment of mankind. When Flint discovers that his machine still operates and now creates mutant food beasts like living pickles, hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees and apple pie-thons, he and his friends must return to save the world.
JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA Eighty-six-year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion: his eight-year-old grandson Billy, in "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa". This October, the signature Jackass characters Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicoll) will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on camera. Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places, and situations that give new meaning to the term "childrearing". The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons, and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens. Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy.
Wednesday 30th October THOR: THE DARK WORLD (3D) Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. ‘What Makes You Happy?
Recently we have been looking for a new member of staff for our church to join the ministry team. As part of the interview day the candidates were asked to make a short presentation on the question ‘What makes you happy?’ This is a question I quite often ask people as I meet them and get to know them. It is a question that reveals a lot about a person’s general outlook on life. According to a survey by The Office for National Statistics in 2012 “People who are married, have jobs and own their own homes are the most likely to be satisfied with their lives”. As a young child growing up the TV adverts told us that true happiness was……a Hamlet cigar! (Cue the music). In the Bible we find this verse “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live” – Ecclesiastes 3:12. There is no doubt that life brings many trials and some very real difficulties but I hope and pray this verse comes true in your life. I pray that in your daily living you may find happiness, find a way to do good in this world and discover the true happiness found in being a friend of God.
Reverend Andrew Axon - St Philip & St James Church, Hucclecote’
Hucclecote Horticultural Society Didn’t I do well in our quiz! What I really mean is that I did not give a single wrong answer during the entire evening! But then I have to confess that that was entirely due to me being selected to keep the score, and so unable to be part of a team at all. In the event our former Chairman and her team won – by a country mile is I think the right expression. A good time was had by all, and our thanks go to Rene Geissler for a combination of amusing and perplexing questions. Our next meeting will be on 26th September, which will be our annual seed and plant swap, as part of a members’ evening. Yours truly also prepares a quiz for these evenings, though nothing like as difficult as the one we have just had. These are just fun evenings. We follow that on 24th October when we welcome back with a talk on Butterflies in Gardens the two Sues, Sue Dodd and Sue Smith. This year seems to have produced more cabbage whites – ugh- than ever before, but also a good variety of the other more colourful butterflies. I am hoping to find out why this should be, and if there is any way that we can discourage one sort whilst encouraging the others. Planning and booking has now started for the 2014 session, and already we have signed up some really interesting speakers to go with our other regular in-house events. All meetings are at the Hucclecote Community Centre, and start at 7.30 pm with refreshments from 7.15 pm. All are welcome: attendance and membership are not To advertise callinformation 01452 890242 restricted to Hucclecote residents. More from Chris on 610694.
Hucclecote Scout Group

With the start of the Scouting year our first week back patrols made toffee apples on open fires. The second week was to build a pioneer bridge on the field but bad weather altered it to inside but all the scouts went round the 25 foot square bridge without falling through the gaps in the poles. Father and sons/daughters camp on the 20th September I hope the weather is better than as I write this but I am sure we will all enjoy it. Sorry to those who did not book on time but it does take a great deal of organisation to run a camp for 100+ with 10 different activities on Saturday and Sunday morning. Also this year a carnival with plenty of small stalls for everyone to try their luck ending with a camp fire on the Saturday evening to which the rest of the family are invited. The next main Group event is the Halloween evening when we have completion for the best Pumpkin and face mask, followed by a camp fire sing song and small firework display….the date is 26th October at 6.15 at the Scout H.Q in Deerpark Road (off Colwell Avenue) with hot dogs and beef burgers on sale. Please phone Terry on 521664 for more information if you have children who may be interested in joining.
Hucclecote Townswomen Guild August saw a change from the usual Hucclecote T.G. meeting in that there was no speaker, so just an informal ‘get together’ Social evening with Sales table, Raffle and Refreshments. It was good to see, welcome and catch up with ‘old’ Guild members and other visitors, and the evening was enjoyed very much by everyone present! Wednesday September 4th was one of the highlights of the year as Hucclecote T G members and friends boarded the coach in Hucclecote on a lovely warm Summer’s morning for the long awaited visit to Highclere Castle (in our imaginations to travel back in time and visit the “Downton Abbey “ of the television series!!) Highclere is the ancestral home of the Earls of Carnarvon the present incumbent being the 8th Earl with his family and everyone had a wonderful four hours to look round the house and gardens at their leisure and visit the Tea Shops and Souvenir shops as required! The rooms used for the television series were clearly labelled as such, with pictures of the main characters using them; lots of family photographs showing present family members and famous visitors in all the rooms, guides in each room so that any questions we had were answered immediately, an amazing dining room and table which could be extended by twelve extra leaves! and though we didn’t see kitchens etc. we did go downstairs and see the bell boards used to summon the downstairs staff to whichever room they were required in. Also downstairs in the basement was the special Egyptian artefacts brought back from Egypt by the 5th Earl Carnarvon who was associated with the finding of the tomb of the Pharoah Tutankhamun- which we didn’t have time to visit, and which needed a separate booking due to limited space available at any one time. The other very interesting fact was that parts of Highclere were used as a Convalescent Hospital during World War 1 very successfully. Everyone enjoyed a worthwhile and enthralling day! The October meeting of Hucclecote TG will take place on Thursday October 17th at 7-30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre when our speaker will be Ms Liz Godsell who will talk to us about “Cheese Making & Tasting” Everyone welcome to come along and maybe try some cheese tasting!!!
