A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the October edition of your Hucclecote Link. We seem to have been lucky with the weather during September, but I’m sure as we go through October it will start to feel a lot more like Autumn. How many of us will get through the month without turning the heating on I wonder! If you are thinking about getting new double glazing this year to keep you warm and cosy through the Winter, C&L Windows, on the front cover have a new show room in Gloucester, why not pop down and take a look. This is one of my favourite times of year, the changes in the colours of the trees, the days can still feel quite pleasant, and the good dramas are back on the telly! Will we all still be watching The Bake Off next year though?! However, if you are looking to get out and about over the coming months, the Hucclecote Community Association are holding a variety of events, to see more of what’s on offer and place some dates in your diary, see their advert on the opposite page. As usual we have a variety of local clubs promoting their monthly events on pages 28& 29 and also on page 25 this month the Cotswold Model Railway Club are promoting their show that is taking place on the 22nd & 23rd October. If you are looking for a night out, I can recommend the Fostons Ash restaurant in Birdlip, they are now holding Curry nights on a Friday night, see more on page 20. If you have a business and with Christmas now creeping up on us (sorry!), you may be thinking about advertising any Christmas promotions or events. Well let us help you get into 1000’s of local homes over November and December. We have a great Countdown to Christmas Offer that may interest you on page 31. Congratulations to Mrs J Pankhurst, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld ticket will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great month, and Happy Halloween! Sarah. Dave’s top tips

Preparing for Autumn Preparing for the cold weather should be done now and your boiler, or other heating systems should be serviced (By a competent, registered person). Do not wait for cold weather to find out that something is not working properly as you may well find it a long cold wait trying to get it repaired. If you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft, make sure its working well by moving the float arm up and down a couple of times to make sure the valve lets in, and shuts off, the water. While you are in the loft, make sure you have at least 270mm of loft insulation and it is laid away from the roof eaves to let in air for loft ventilation. Check pipework in the loft is insulated and all stopcocks and gate valves (this applies to the whole house) are working properly by turning them off then back on again. Check all door and window draught proofing, including the letterbox and rectify as required. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

The Girl on the Train The Girl on the Train is the story of Rachel Watson's life post-divorce. Every day, she takes the train in to work in New York, and every day the train passes by her old house. The house she lived in with her husband, who still lives there, with his new wife and child. As she attempts to not focus on her pain, she starts watching a couple who live a few houses down -- Megan and Scott Hipwell. She creates a wonderful dream life for them in her head, about how they are a perfect happy family. And then one day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking, filling her with rage. The next day, she wakes up with a horrible hangover, various wounds and bruises, and no memory of the night before. She has only a feeling: something bad happened. Then come the TV reports: Megan Hipwell is missing. Rachel becomes invested in the case and trying to find out what happened to Megan, where she is, and what exactly she herself was up to that same night Megan went missing. 14th October 2016

Hucclecote Scout News By the time you read this, the 38th Father / daughters camp at Cranham will have taken place, and with 100 on camp, all we want as we write this is good weather. The Cubs had a big celebration at the Docks to end the celebration of 100 years since Cubs started, with plenty of activities for the Cubs to try. Plans for next years Summer Camp in Yorkshire are being made. It is a very good Scout camp site with plenty of activities. With a visit to the National Coal Mine York and a walk on Ilkley Moor (where the song comes from) and a swimming pool, it should be a great camp. The five Cubs and other boys who have just started Scouts were invested infront of the other scouts and their parents. The five Scouts who went on the County Air Scout Time had a great time, even though the weather could have been better. Now is an ideal time to join the Group as it is the start of the Scouting year with plenty of activities and camps already being planned for all units. Beavers age 6 to 8………..Cubs age 8 to 10………..Scouts age 10 to 14 Please contact Terry on 521664 for more details

Hucclecote Garden Club Our Annual Plant and Produce Show took place on the 25th August at the Community Centre and was well supported by members, with entries in categories from 'container of six different herbs', a 'pot of jam', a 'pot of chutney or pickle' 'photo - holiday scene' to 'six cherry tomatoes' and 'three carrots' and many more. All exhibits were judged by Mr. Bob Champion, Vice-Chairman of the Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies. Bob judges at many venues in Gloucestershire, and always gives positive feed-back to entrants, as well as very useful tips to all our Members. We value his vast knowledge and good sense of humour. Hopefully he will be speaking to us next year on one of his favourite subjects 'Fuchsias'. It seems a long way off but we are just starting to put together our Members Christmas Evening, in November, which is our last event of 2016. We hope to be able to have a winter themed practical demonstration - similar to last year when we had one of our members showing us how to put together a very simple Christmas Table Decoration, together with a few nibbles and drinks. We have recently had a few new members who have seen our poster at the Community Centre, and we hope to attract some more locals interested in all aspects of gardening. We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month in the Community Centre at 7.30pm. Entry for non-members is £2 per session, with coffee/tea and biscuits as well as a raffle. For further details please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

Our talk this month (September) was ‘The lives of the Narrow-Boat Women’. Jill, Cynthia and Pat came from the National Waterways Museum in Gloucester. They arrived in costume and talked about how these women lived and worked. It was a very hard life and they brought some of the pictures and artefacts to show us. It was a very interesting talk and we thank them very much. Later this month we have a trip to Laithwaites wines (hic). We have different speakers on various subjects most months. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. Phone Ellen on 01452 611976 or Betty on 01452 698299 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you.

Scottish Dancing at Kings School, Gouda Way, Gloucester. Tuesdays 7.30pm - 10.00pm. Beginners welcome. Cost £2.50 (Members £2) but first night FREE. New Session starts September 6. Contact 01452 306857 or see website http://www.gloucesterscd.btck.co.uk. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday each month, at 7.30pm. At each meeting, there is a speaker, tea, coffee and biscuits, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Visitors and guests are always welcome; please phone Linda on Gloucester 617701 for more information, or just come along! Forthcoming speakers include Karen Cornwall, who will be accompanied by an Assistance Dog, and Anneliese Sterry from the Gloucester Food Bank. August marked the 50th Anniversary of Hucclecote Guild, and to mark the event, we enjoyed a fantastic three-course lunch at Puckrup Hall near Tewkesbury. It was a lovely event - Pimms on arrival, a first-rate lunch, and lovely weather in which to enjoy the beautiful setting. Our after-dinner speaker was Marion Canning, who has been a Lady Toastmaster for many years. Marion was dressed in her bespoke Toastmaster uniform, and gave an entertaining insight into her role, and experiences over the years. Many anecdotes were illustrated by things she kept in her briefcase of "Things which may come in useful", and were very amusing. Two Guild members joined in 1966; Marilyn Pullon who was unable to be at the lunch, but who sent her best wishes and some reminiscences from the very early days of the Guild, and Iris Love, who assisted our Chairman Linda Rosam in cutting the Anniversary Cake. Everyone agreed this was a lovely event, and a perfect way to celebrate the Guild's Golden Anniversary. Please mention
