Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the October edition of your Hucclecote Link. This month we are celebrating publishing The Link Directories for 13 years. We started out with just the Abbey-Link going to 2500 homes and now we publish the Abbey-Link, Hucclecote Link and Tuffley Link directories and distribute to 16,500 homes. We think this is a great achievement and would like to take the opportunity to say a huge ’Thank you’ to all our readers, advertisers and distributors for helping us achieve this mile stone. Now Autumn is here and our thoughts start to turn towards the ’C’ word. Yes, I’m sorry, but Christmas is now around the corner, so if you are the one that organises the Christmas parties, perhaps you can find what you are looking for in the Hucclecote Link.. With Hatton Court on the back page and Bowden Hall on page 16, both advertising their festive party nights, make sure you reserve your space quick so you don’t miss out. The Huccelcote Community Association, are also advertising a range of events taking place throughout October, November & December, have a look at their advert on page 21 for more information. We also have the new local Co-Operative, on Barnwood Road, advertising their local offers with us this month, see their advert opposite for more details. Congratulations to Mrs G Ellis for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great month .... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Removing wall tiles Removing wall tiles can be an arduous task depending on the original adhesive used. Before you start ensure that any sanitary ware is protected from scratching from falling tiles. Using a bolster line it up to the edge of the tile at an angle as close to the wall as possible and strike it with a hammer. You will probably find the first few tiles to be the hardest to remove. If standard adhesive was originally used the tiles should come away fairly easily from a solid wall, any excess adhesive stuck to the wall should be removed with a scraper. If the wall is made of plasterboard be prepared to have to re-board the wall as the adhesive may well damage the wall. In some cases it is just easier to rip down the plasterboard and renew it. Work your way around the tiles chipping from the edges until all the tiles are removed. Bear in mind small fragments will fly off so gloves and safety glasses are a must. If the tiles were originally fitted with a cement-based adhesive, then be prepared to spend a lot of time to remove them, and probably allow to replaster the walls afterwards. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

All units have started back ready for a new year in Scouting. The next big event was the Father/Mothers camp at Cranham on the last weekend in September. With over 100 in camp a great time was had by all. The Scouts started off well with making toffee apples done on open fires. Hucclecote Garden Club Now we are well into the Autumn season and are thinking about looking after our more tender plants in the oncoming colder weather, it was good to look back at the Garden Club's Annual Plant & Produce Show, when exhibits from tomatoes, runner beans, french beans, sweet peas, plumbs, pots of jam, chutney or pickle, to home-made cake and 'In my Garden' our photographic competition, were on display for judging by our regular guest judge Mr. Bob Champion from Down Hatherley, Gloucester. Bob is an accredited Judge for the Glos Federation of Garden Clubs and is a mine of information on every horticultural subject, we were very lucky to have his expertise on hand. An update on events/progress at our local Barnwood Arboretum was the topic of our September Talk, given by Ron and Elaine Keasley and assisted via photographs supplied by our Treasurer Pete. Such a variety of activities take place within the Arboretum from Outdoor Drama Productions, Butterfly Counts, Moth Counts, Bird Counts, general gardening maintenance carried out by a regular group of volunteers, as well as regular visits from local schools. A small herd of cattle and a group of sheep are regular inhabitants of the Arboretum at different times during the year, a sight much looked forward to by both older and younger children from the local area and beyond. Poisonous Plants in the Garden is a forthcoming talk, which should be of interest to gardeners and non-gardeners alike. For further information on the Club please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. We meet on the fourth Thursday each much at Hucclecote Community Centre, 7.30pm.
