The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link

Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the October edition of your Hucclecote Link. We have something to celebrate this month - it’s our birthday! We are celebrating 15 years of publishing - the first edition of the Abbey-Link was published in Oct 2005! We have come such a long way since then, now publishing 3 local directories and getting local businesses into 16,000 local homes. Although it’s not always been an easy journey, especially recently, we are so proud of where we are today and I wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL, our customers, readers and distributors, without your support this would not have been possible. Please continue to put your trust in us and support the amazing local businesses that advertise. Now the clocks go back this month and the nights are already starting to pull in, and so with Autumn well and truly on it’s way and the number COVID cases on the rise again, the future of ‘getting back to normal’ sadly looks a little wobbly. So now more than ever, it is a really important time to try to show our support to our local businesses. Again we thankfully have a few more of our regulars that have been able to open their doors since the last edition and we warmly welcome back; Hucclecote Community Centre and local beauticians - Beauty Spot Glos. This is such good news and we wish them all the best as they open their doors to customers again. Please all continue to take care and keep safe, hope you all have a good month. Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Low level to close coupled cisterns

How can I change my old low-level toilet to a new close-coupled toilet without having a gap behind the cistern? Well there are two possible answers. You either move all of the outgoing pipework in your bathroom wall or floor, or you make a simple box that goes on the wall behind the new close-coupled cistern. The new cistern is then fixed to this box, which can then be tiled or painted depending on what you like. Even if the bathroom walls are tiled already, using strong construction adhesive you can stick the required timbers on the wall and then tack some plasterboard to them when the adhesive is dry. Make sure that you insert a timber cross member at the height of the screw holes which secure the cistern to the wall. The reason a low level toilet does not often exchange easily for a close coupled unit is because 99% of the time a low level unit has a waste outlet which goes down into the floor. If the low level unit you have has a waste outlet which goes directly through the wall or turns at a right angle out of the back of the toilet to go right or left away from the toilet, then you should have no problem replacing it with a close coupled toilet. If your low level unit goes into the floor, the floor outlet is too far away from the wall to allow an easy exchange with a close-coupled unit. You can either dig up the floor and install another pipe, or continue with the box method described above. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

With a strong supporting cast in Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez and Richard Jenkins, best known for film roles in Jack Reacher, Step Brothers and Burn After Reading, Kajillionaire offers something slightly different from the much talked about Tenet and The New Mutants.

14th October 2020 Death on the Nile Starring – Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hamer, Jennifer Saunders, Rose Leslie, Letitia Wright, Sophie Okonedo Death on the Nile is the brand new big screen take on the Agatha Christie classic murder mystery. Sequel to 2017’s hit Murder on the Orient Express, prestigious actor Kenneth Branagh, fresh off his villainous turn in Tenet, returns as Hercule Poirot. The Belgian super sleuth’s vacation on-board a glamorous river steamer turns into a thrilling and terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against the draw dropping landscape of sweeping deserts and the majestic Giza Pyramids, this tale of unbridled passion and incapacitating jealousy features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travellers and enough wicked twists and turns that leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking conclusion. With an all-star cast directed by Kenneth Branagh, this glamorous and deadly adventure is not to be missed on the big screen.

16th October2020 Candyman Starring – Colman Domingo, Tony Todd, Yahya Abdul-MateenII, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett

Candyman returns in this “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 classic horror of the same name. For as long as the residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago's Cabrini Green neighbourhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, a visual artist named Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend, a gallery director named Brianna Cartwright, moved into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by the upwardly mobile millennials. With Anthony's painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind the Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifyingly viral wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

17th & 18th October2020 Michael Ball and Alfie Boe: Back Together Starring – Michael Ball, Alfie Boe

The world's ultimate musical duo, Michael Ball and Alfie Boe are 'Back Together' and set to delight cinema audiences up and down the country with the final show of their UK tour at the O2 Arena. Hot on the heels of their star turns in the West End's phenomenally successful staged concert of Les Miserables, Ball and Boe's sensational voices and irresistible chemistry will undoubtedly light up the big screen. The superstar pair will take on their favourite musical theatre, pop and rock tracks, including songs from The Lion King, The Greatest Showman and The Phantom of the Opera as well as a brilliantly arranged 'Queen Medley'. A limited release only showing Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October, this is one event not to be missed.

Hucclecote Garden Club October can be a really colourful month in the garden, with the leaves of the Acer turning beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red, Autumn flowering bulbs such as cyclamen are in full bloom giving lovely splashes of pink and white under trees and seem to pop up everywhere in the garden. October is traditionally a good month for planting many shrubs, trees, ornamental grasses and perennials as the soil is still relatively warm. Spring bulbs can also be planted now both in the borders and in containers and in fact can do really well in seasonal containers. Summer bedding plants can be cleared away to make room for Spring bedding and bulbs. Dahlias can be lifted this month and stored in your greenhouse, although many are now bred to be winter-hardy and can be left in the ground. Pelagoniums, and fuchsias can be brought into frost-free conditions, ideally in a greenhouse. All in all October can be a really busy time in the garden, and for fresh garden ideas there is still time to visit local National Garden Scheme gardens, details of which can be found on the NGS website. For the keen gardener it is also a great time to think about what garden delights you could put on your Christmas-list. Hucclecote Garden Club is not currently holding meetings, but hopes to re-start sessions in the New Year. Details from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD

Sadly, the restrictions on public gatherings at venues such as the Community Centre look set to continue for some months yet, so there are no plans to hold further monthly evening meetings of the Guild until the start of next year. The speakers who were booked for 2020 have been rebooked for next year, and the programme of other events has been put on hold for the time being. Guild members will be written to individually by the Committee, but should anyone have any questions, please phone Linda on 617701. Thanks to the Hucclecote Link for allowing us to keep members in touch with developments.
