Dave’s top tips Types of sealant Silicone sealants Silicone sealants are not water based so they do not need to dry to go hard, they go hard through a chemical process occurring as a reaction with air. This process is called curing. Silicone sealants are waterproof, can be used outdoors for a variety of waterproofing jobs and come in many colours including clear. Water based sealants These sealants and fillers are water based and usually used for gap filling down the sides of architraves or in the top of skirting boards. Again they are supplied in many colours and can be over-painted, some can be sanded and the white ones can sometimes be stained but check on the tube if this is the case. Roofing sealants Roofing and gutter sealants are highly flexible, completely waterproof and can be used, as the name suggests, for sealing leaks in gutters and flat roofs. The surface must be absolutely free from dust to get the best possible seal.

Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Will Advice from Dee & Griffin Solicitors After over 60 years of robust good health, I suddenly became seriously ill and ended up in hospital. We all take good health for granted and yet illness and indeed death can strike at any time. That’s why it is important to make a Will and I am astonished that so many people don’t bother. I have been a Solicitor in Gloucester for about 35 years and in my career, have encountered some real problems where people haven’t made Wills. For example, people assume that everything passes to a surviving wife (or husband) on first death, but this may not necessarily be the case. If there is no Will, then there is what is termed an intestacy and in this case, the surviving spouse will receive only the first £450,000 of her late husband’s estate where there are children. The couple may have a nice house worth £600,000 but no other assets of note, so she may not only have the grief of losing her husband, but be forced to act to comply with the law and this could possibly involve a sale of the property if the children do not cooperate with their mother to try to overcome the problem! Also, and even when a couple have made Wills, it is important to keep them under review. It is not a tick box exercise for life! An all too familiar example is where Mr and Mrs Smith made wills when their twins Tom and Dick were born. The Wills were simple and in the first instance they left everything to each other and with a gift of everything to be divided equally between Tom and Dick at 21 on the death of the survivor. Time passes and the couple celebrate their Silver Wedding, but sadly a few years later, Mr Smith passes on. More time passes and a lonely Mrs Smith meets Steve, falls in love and they eventually marry! Tom and Dick are happy for their mum as she has been transformed by this new love in her life. Even more time passes and Mrs Smith passes on. Her Estate comprises the house she purchased with her first husband worth £300,000 and some savings of about £100,000. Who inherits this? Tom and Dick are the beneficiaries named in her Will BUT this Will has been automatically revoked by her remarriage! Steve inherits as she has died intestate and Tom and Dick receive NOTHING! In my experience, many people do not realise that marriage automatically revokes a Will unless it is made in contemplation of marriage, so it is so important to ensure your wishes after death are met by keeping your Will up to date.

Kieron Griffin Retirement Founding partner of Dee & Griffin Solicitors retires after providing over 34 years of legal advice across Gloucestershire For over 30 years Kieron Griffin has been providing legal advice to the people of Gloucestershire and has now earned himself a well-deserved retirement. Kieron has proved himself to be a multi-skilled solicitor providing legal advice across a range of different areas including residential and commercial conveyancing, family law, wills, probate and powers of attorney. Kieron was born in Gloucester and educated at the Crypt School and Leicester Polytechnic. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1983 and in 1989 he and Andrew Dee were the founding partners in the firm of Dee and Griffin at Hucclecote Court. The firm has grown and expanded and now has two further offices, in Quedgeley and Cheltenham. Until his retirement from the Board last year, he had been a non-executive director at Holloway Friendly in Gloucester for many years and he is the Clerk to the Verderers Court in the Forest of Dean, a post held for almost 35 years. He is retiring from practice at the end of July and is aware his wife has already made a list of jobs for him to do at their home in Staunton! He will hopefully be able to spend more time on his hobbies and many interests, including walking, cycling and generally keeping fit. Recalling a particular career highlight Kieron said ‘I was once responsible for completing the sale of an entire mortgage book of many hundreds of mortgages to a building society. It went through without a hitch!’ One of the more memorable events in Kieron’s career came when representing a client who unfortunately suffered with alcohol and mental health issues in the Magistrates Court. When asked if he had anything to say, he spoke eloquently and at some length, but referred to every male as “John” including myself and the two male magistrates! The lady Chair he called Doris!’ Kieron looks forward to leaving behind the bombardment of emails which are a relatively modern device. Kieron said ‘When I started, secretaries had electric typewriters and Tippex for errors but were not allowed to use on wills and deeds so they had to retype if they made a mistake! We had no computers or mobile phones and I recall we were all really excited when we had a cutting-edge piece of equipment installed – the fax machine! I now spend most of my day tapping on a computer keyboard but we still seem to generate an increasing amount of paper!’ He would like to take this opportunity to thank all his clients for their support over his many years in practice and although sad to be leaving, he is nevertheless delighted that Dee and Griffin is going from strength to strength with the remaining four partners and dedicated staff who will continue to provide an excellent service to his many clients and their families and friends. Kieron said, ‘Whilst I am sad to leave I can do so in the knowledge that my clients are being left in the capable hands of all at Dee & Griffin. The handover has been complete and I would encourage anyone out there looking for legal advice for property, family law, and wills and probate to get in touch’. Managing Partner Julian Jenkins said ‘Kieron is unique in comparison to most solicitors in his ability to provide expert advice across a number of completely different legal areas. The modern mentality is to pick one area of law and stick to it. We won’t see many of his like again.’ Kieron has one last message ‘My final piece of advice would be to sort out power of attorney which can be vital when dealing with unexpected issues in life. I have seen first-hand the value of having this in place to really help families through unexpected and difficult times.’ For legal advice regarding property, family law, wills, probate and power of attorney contact Dee & Griffin Solicitors on 01452 617288, info@deeandfriffin.co.uk or www.deeandgriffin.co.uk

Hucclecote Scout News The main event was the Summer camp at Bradley Wood Scout Camp in Yorkshire. We have been there eight times over the last 30 years. It is a slightly wooded site with a swimming pool. The main activities the Scouts did were; climbing, rifle shooting, archery, crate staking (up to 20 feet high), assault course and compass trail. With a visit down a coal mine, a walk on Ikley Moor and on the last day a visit to York. As usual the camp was run on Scout Lines and the 22 Scouts were in 4 patrols cooking on open fires. Over 20 camper and camp badges were gained by the scouts. The weather was fairly good with only rain at night. The Father / Daughter camp on 24th September is now fully booked with over 100 coming. Sorry if you have not booked. A list of patrols will be on the notice board for the first meeting and please phone me if your name has been missed. Scouts start back the week the schools go back, making toffee apples. Anyone interested in joining Beavers, Cubs or Scouts please phone Terry on 521664

Hucclecote Garden Club Our July speakers were Sue Dodd and Sue Smith, two local la dies, who talked with slides on Not so Common on the Common, giving us an insight into the rarer wild flowers which can be found "on the Common" and in the woods of Gloucestershire. Some were a familiar sight in the Spring in the Newent area - the wild daffodil - the more delicate and paler version of the cultivated daffodil, some flowers were very strange indeed and were new to most of us. In August we have our annual Plant and Produce Show, where members bring along for judgement samples of their wares grown over the season. From tomatoes to runner beans to vases of dahlias or mixed flowers. Also on show, and for judgement, will be a pot of jam, plate of raspberries and best photo - A Water Scene. Everyone is welcome, it is a fun evening with coffee/ tea and biscuits to start and our Raffle later in the evening. We look forward to welcoming Jon Mason from Highfield Nurseries in September to give us many tips on the growing, pruning and general maintenance of Fruit Trees. Jon is a great speaker and isually bring along plenty of samples relating to his talk. We meet on the fourth Thursday each month at 7.30pm in the Hucclecote Community Centre. Further details from Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

At our last meeting we had a members evening which involved discussing WI business and future planned events and this was followed by a fish and chip supper to round off the evening. The bowls and buffet night held at Pineholt Bowls Club was a real success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The afternoon at the Cheltenham Croquet Club was great fun and we would like to thank the members of the club who helped us to master the game and for the scrumptious tea we had later. We have a host of forthcoming speakers such as the Ifakara Bakery Project, Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information. The meetings include speakers covering a wide range of topics and interests, refreshments, a raffle, the "bring and buy" sales table and the opportunity to chat and socialise. The Property Centre raise funds for National Star Charity A team of 16 walkers from The Property Centre, Abbeymead’s Top-Selling Agent, took on the challenge of walking 100 km of The Cotswold Way in June to raise money for local charity. Celebrating its 20th anniversary year in 2017, The Property Centre is known for undertaking exhilarating challenges to help local charities, and this walk proved to be their most gruelling challenge to date, completed at the peak of the June heatwave. The team trekked for 36 hours to complete the walk, raising over £3,000 for National Star, the Gloucestershire-based charity which transforms the lives of young people with complex disabilities. Having previously supported National Star as its Charity of the Year, The Property Centre team was keen to raise the bar with their fundraising event for this great local cause. “It’s 20 years since we founded The Property Centre, and as a proud local company we thought we’d mark our anniversary in 2017 by doing 20 things to support local charities”, said Founding Partner, Steve Jones. “National Star does amazing work with disabled young people and we really enjoyed supporting the charity with our Three Peaks Challenge last year. With that in mind, we wanted one of the anniversary events to be a real “test” – which doing the Cotswold Way 100k Walk in under 36 hours definitely proved to be. We’ve managed to raise over £3,000 so far though, so all the blisters were worthwhile!” Gill Henry, Head of Fundraising at National Star was impressed with the efforts of all the walkers. “We are so grateful to The Property Centre for completing the Cotswold Way Challenge in aid of National Star and for raising such a fantastic amount. It was a brilliant achievement for all involved and we appreciate their continued support.”
