Dear Neighbours, Welcome to the September edition of your Hucclecote Link. The Summer holidays are now drawing to a close and it’s the start of a new academic year. This can mean a whole new era for a lot of the younger generation, with either first days at school, colleges or universities looming, it can be an exciting and also apprehensive few weeks ahead. Good luck to all of you starting your new adventures. No sooner is the Summer over and our thoughts start to turn towards the ’C’ word. Yes, I’m sorry, but if you are the one that organises the Christmas parties, perhaps you can find what you are looking for in the Link Directories. With Hatton Court on the opposite page and Bowden Hall on page 24, both advertising their fesive party nights, make sure you reserve your space quick so you don’t miss out. The Huccelcote Community Association, are also advertising their day trip to the Bath Christmas market if you are looking to get a bit of Christmas shopping done early in December. They also have other events taking place throughout October and November, have a look at their advert on page 21 for more information. We also have the new local Co-Operative, on Barnwood Road, advertising their local offers with us this month, see the back page for more details. Congratulations to Keith Charsley for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld tickets will be on their way out to you. Have a great month .... Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Drilling holes in ceramic tiles Ok , so you have just tiled your bathroom and need to fit a few items to the wall such as a towel rail. But those tiles seem so hard and slippery, what is the best way to drill a hole? The first thing you need to do is mark out where the hole needs to be and apply some masking tape to said mark. This will help prevent the drill from slipping around on the tiles surface. Next fit a masonry bit of correct size into your drill and set the hammer action of the drill to OFF. Align the drill with your mark and slowly start to apply pressure with the drill running fairly slowly. This should give you a slight indentation on the tile as the drill cuts in. Gradually increase the speed but being careful not to overheat the drill bit and not applying too much pressure. Gradually the drill will pass through the tile and you can then apply the hammer action to drill through the actual wall. Be sure to check out our website at www.dstevens999.co.uk for more top tips along with some great video tutorials to help you with your DIY skills Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

We are a small group who meet on the third Thursday of every month at the Methodist Church Hall Carisbrooke Road Hucclecote from 10am until 12 noon. We do not meet during he month of August and our next meeting will be on Thursday 20th September when we shall be having a very interesting talk by Chris O’Dowd on the subject of Antiques and Anecdotes. Why not come along to one of our meetings and find out what we are all about – we would welcome visitors who may eventually like us enough to join us. At our October meeting we are holding a “pre-loved vintage sale of clothes and accessories” there will be various stalls and coffee and cake admission free. This is to be on Thursday October 18th 10.30am until noon. Please mention

Hucclecote Scout News The main event in the last month was the combines Explorers (over 14’s) and Scouts camp in Austria with 43 in the camp. In the 10 days they were there they had a very active programme. Cannon Walking….going in the water up a couple of miles in a mountain stream. Canoeing….in two man canoes on a mountain lake Salt Mine….going down the mine and along tunnels to see how salt use to be mined. Toboggan run….going down along fast down a dry slope - good fun With camp fires for all the 25 groups on site with Scouts from many countries. The Germans invited the Scouts to their camp fire which was held in a large black tent lit with candles. I am sure everyone will look back with good memories of all the activities they did. All units start back when the Schools start, for details about joining (6 to 14 year olds) phone Terry on 521662 for more details.

Hucclecote Garden Club Hopefully now having had some pretty heavy showers our brown grass will be a distant memory as we move into the Autumn season. Roger Turner from Brockworth did not disappoint with his talk on 'Making a Garden at Chelsea'. Roger had the opportunity to design a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show when he won a garden design competition sponsored by The Daily Express. He went through the meticulous process of design, hard landscaping, and finally flowers/trees/shrubs used in the Garden. Time was quite short in bringing all his design ideas together to create the perfect Garden, with the vagaries of the British weather to overcome. We are looking forward to Elaine and Ron Keasley, Trustees of Barnwood Arboretum, giving us an update on the great work going on at our local Green Flag awarded Arboretum. We know local school parties have made visits to the Arboretum, along with younger local children, and have thoroughly enjoyed their learning experience there. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Hucclecote Community Centre, do come along and pick up a few gardening tips and have a great cup of coffee/tea and raffle. For further information please contact Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

33

In July we had a pudding evening where everyone bought a selection of different types of desserts, which were absolutely delicious, no good for the waistline, but still very nice. A week later we went to Cheltenham to play croquet which proved very popular and enjoyable, we will all sign up for next year. As we do not have a meeting in August we look forward to September where we will be having a talk by Pam Slater on Garden Lore, Myths, Stories and Legends, which sounds very intriguing. We have many activities and various speakers throughout the year such as meals out, archery, clay pigeon shooting etc; lots to look forward to. After all of our speakers we have time to socialise with refreshments. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on 01452 613208 or Ellen on 01452 611976 for more information or just pop in and you would be made very welcome

Tuesday @ Two What is it? A social gathering where you can meet your own friends (or make new ones); if you like playing games (Canasta, Scrabble, Rummy Cub) these are available or bring your favourite game with you. The afternoon finishes with home made cake and a cup of tea.

Where is it held? In the Church Centre, behind the church in Larkhay Road 2 - 4 pm

Is there a charge? A donation of ÂŁ1.50 to cover the cost of cake and tea would be appreciated

When does the group meet? First & third Tuesday in month - September - 4th & 18th October 2nd - 16th

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday every month, at 7.30pm. At each meeting, we have a speaker or demonstration which cover a wide range of topics and interests, a raffle, the sales table, refreshments and the chance to chat and socialise. As well as the monthly evening meetings, other events later in the year include the coach trip to Oakham Treasures, the annual Inter-Guild Skittles Tournament, a charity coffee morning, the annual Quiz, and the Christmas Shopping trip to the Victorian Market in Worcester. Our most recent speaker was Claire Wiseman on hand and nail care. Claire brought with her a wide range of products, and demonstrated how, with just a little attention, our hands and nails can be kept in tip-top condition, despite the wear-and-tear of gardening, housework and all the other tasks they have to do. Guests and visitors are always welcome at Guild meetings. If you would like more information, phone Linda on 617701, or just come along!
