A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,
3
Welcome to the September edition of your Hucclecote Link. Wow where did those Summer holidays go, I do hope you all managed to enjoy the few nice days of good weather that we managed to get? September can feel a funny month, Autumn is just around the corner and yet we can sometimes have better weather than during August. For many September is the start of a new era, with many young ones taking their first steps into a new environment, whether that be primary or secondary school or moving on to college or university; it can be a time of new beginnings and uncertainty. In this house my youngest will be starting Senior school, so this will mean quite a new routine within the household and a definite feel of them all growing up now! If yours are flying the nest, then you may even feel a bit of empty nest syndrome setting in, in which case maybe we can help you with some events to put in your diaries.. Over the Autumn months the The Hucclecote Community Association are holding a variety of events, to see more of what’s on offer and place some dates in your diary, see their advert on the opposite page. September is a month many people help to raise money for Macmillian by holding coffee mornings, locally there is one being held at St Phillip and St James Church see more on page 25, and Interior Needs are combing their charity coffee mornings with also raising month from sales for The MS Society, read more on pages 16 & 17. Local charity James Hopkins Trust are holding a charity auction early in October, this should be a great evening and a great way to help raise much needed funds for this amazing charity, more details on page 32. If you like art, then The Fosseway Artists Autumn Exhibition is being held at Nature in Art this month - more details on page 30. Perhaps you are looking to burn off all those calories from Summer BBQs and icecreams! If so, Zumba with Jane are celebrating their first anniversary by holding an event at the Walls Club in September, find out more on page 14. As we head towards the final quarter of the year (already!) and you would like to see if we can help you to grow your business, we have a great Autumn Offer that you might like to take advantage of. Congratulations to Holly Warner, for winning the Sudoku, Cineworld ticket will be on their way out to you. To be in with a chance to win Cineworld Tickets, see page 27. Please feel free to email me your Sudoku entries if you so wish: sarah@thelinkdirectories.co.uk Have a great September Sarah.

Dave’s top tips Why move to ceramic disk taps? Ceramic disk taps are designed to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, in hard water areas they do not and it is as well to know how they operate and how to service them. It is very rare for the ceramic discs to wear out and the need to replace them is even rarer. It is, most often, just a case of dismantling the moving parts and servicing them. Should you be unlucky enough to have a tap wherein the parts do actually "wear out" then it is unlikely you will be able to replace the discs and will probably need to replace the whole cartridge within the unit. The disc tap should be virtually indestructible because a) the ceramics do not wear out, and b) The distance moved by any part of the tap in any one go, is only a quarter of a turn. Regards Dave Stevens. If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself

Hucclecote Scout News The main event of the last month was the Summer Camp at St Mawgans near Newquay. It was not a wet camp but rather damp at times but we still managed a visit to the Lands End experience. The main activity was coasting (climbing over rocks and jumping into large rock pools) very well organised with double wet suits helmets and life jackets. Scouts passed Camper and Camp Cook badges. Visits to local beaches, body boarding and had fish caught with rod and line for tea one day. Scouts slept out in the kitchen shelters several nights but had to move back in tents one night because of rain. Did not manage to sleep on the beach as weather too unsettled. With all the cooking on open fires, boats races on the nearby stream everyone enjoyed the camp. The only bad thing that on journey home two cars had a bad accident and it took six hours to get home but we all arrived safely which was the main thing. With the start of the new Scout year the first main events the Father & Sons camp which is now full with over 100 on it. Then our usual visit to Go Karting and Lazer Tag and other activities. With five Scouts going into Explorers and five Cubs coming into Scouts it is an ideal time for ex Cubs and Beavers (plus anyone who has never tried Scouting) to come along to the first meeting on Friday 9th September at 6.45 and help make toffee apples and join in the fun. We meet in Deerpark Rd (off Colwell Avenue) by the Church. Phone Terry on 521664 if you would like more information on the Group.
Hucclecote Garden Club With the summer holidays behind us now, September can often be a beautiful month with mellow sunshine, shorter colder evenings and the soil still warm enough for planting. Some sunflower plants are still standing tall and proud in the garden, we are just seeing signs of other members of the daisy family, the Asters and Michaelmas Daisies starting to come into bloom with a variety of pinks, blues, and purples which last well into the first frosts. This can really be a colourful month in the garden and a time to sit back and enjoy the last splashes of colour. Mr. David Coombs is again coming along to the Garden Club, to talk to us this time about Ponds, Marginals and Bog Gardens on the 22nd September, 7.30pm. So do come along if you want to learn more about what creatures can be attracted to your pond and the plants which you can grow in that environment. If you want to hear about the work of the Gloucester City Council's Senior Countryside Ranger, then make a note in your diary of Thursday 27th October, when Ian Elphick will be giving us an insight into his work, the impact of climate change and a consequently more challenging environment. We meet at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. For more details please contact Joy on 553185 or Sue on 543573.

Hucclecote Larkhay WI

July started with a trip to St. Fagan’s in Wales. It was a beautiful day and the weather was sunny. There was much to see and do and we had a really enjoyable day. We had a skittles match against another W.I group, unfortunately we came second but we all had a lovely evening. During September we have a wine tasting evening (which we are all looking forward to) at Laithwaites. Also, we have a social skittles lined up later in the month. We have different speakers on various subjects most months. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm. If you feel that you would like to come along, please do so and you would be made very welcome. Phone Ellen on 01452 611976 or Betty on 01452 698299 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you. Scottish Dancing at Kings School, Gouda Way, Gloucester. Tuesdays 7.30pm - 10.00pm. Beginners welcome. Cost £2.50 (Members £2) but first night FREE. New Session starts September 6. Contact 01452 306857 or see website http://www.gloucesterscd.btck.co.uk. HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD The Guild meets at Hucclecote Community Centre on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. You are welcome to join us for speakers covering a wide range of interests and topics, and there is time for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chance to chat. Future speakers include Karen Cornwall who will be bringing a Support Dog along, and Anneliese Stery from the Gloucester Food Bank. Our most recent speaker was Neil Alcock from the Vinyard Pottery, who gave an interesting talk about his origins as a potter, from hating pottery at Art College, to working at Winchcombe Pottery, then after travelling and working in studios in Germany and France, establishing his own Studio. He brought along not only samples of his work, but a potters wheel and clay to do a demonstration while he talked. The recent coach trip to Friars Court in Oxfordshire was a great success, where we enjoyed good weather, a delicious lunch and a guided walk around the grounds. Coming up is our Anniversary Lunch to celebrate 50 years of the Hucclecote TWG, the inter-Guild Quiz and skittles match, a charity coffee morning, and the Christmas shopping trip to Bath. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Phone Linda on 617701, or just come along! Please mention
