A bit about “The HucclecoteHucclecote-Link” Link” Dear Neighbours,

3

Welcome to the April edition of your Hucclecote Link. Spring has officially arrived! The clocks have now gone forward, and so the evenings will start to get lighter, the weather a little warmer (fingers crossed) and we will all start to get out and about a bit more. It’s also time when we start to think about giving our homes a good Spring clean. Well we have plenty of businesses that can help you with that. With Time for You on page 29, a cleaning company who can help with either regular or one off cleans around your home. Perhaps the exterior of your homes could do with a tidy up, we have Al’s Window Cleaning on page 19 who can get your gutters and windows cleaned and on our index on page 34, we have a list of garden maintenance and property maintenance companies who can help get your homes and gardens ready for Summer, whether it is for one off or regular jobs. The Hucclecote Community Association have a range of Spring events taking place over the next few months, see the opposite page and get involved in their days out or live band evenings. The church of St Philip and St James in Hucclecote, will be hosting a concert in May to help raisefunds for the church and the charity ‘Compassion’, tickets are only £5 more details on page 20. As always, if you are looking to take up a new activity or join a new club, our what’s on pages, on pages 32 - 33, always have a variety of clubs that take place locally. The Tuesday @ Two club is also promoting its dates on page 34. If you have a business, and are thinking of advertising, why not take advantage of our Easter offer below and when you take out a half page advert in all 3 directories and it will only cost you £149. If you are still unsure about whether to advertise with us, take a look below at what the benefits of advertising with us are. Dave’s top tips Hard to reach screws ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗

If you find you have to get a screw into a tricky position or corner here’s a quick tip to hold the screw to the blade of the screwdriver. Take a piece of masking tape and push the screw through it with the sticky side of the tape face up. Then insert the screwdriver blade into the screw slot and fold the masking tape up to stick the screw to the blade. The screw is then held in position on the driver and can be inserted upside down and at an angle. If possible it is much easier to start the screw off if you can make a small pilot hole somehow. Another and better option would be to invest in a magnetic bit holder to hold the screws. This latter option will not work however with things such as brass screws. Regards Dave Stevens.

If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you. Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Although her artist husband looks down on her job, Catrin's natural flair quickly gets her noticed by charming lead scriptwriter Buckley (Sam Claflin). Hucclecote Scout News The founders day celebrations went well with over 150 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers joining together with their parents for a camp fire and ending with eats. The Scouts started their four week session on the Ski slope and normally can come down from the top on the last session. Another session at the Go Karting Centre and Lazer Tag is still one of the most popular activities. With the clocks going back we will soon be outside lighting fires and cooking on Scout meetings. With May Day camp so soon after Easter we will be putting up the Icelandic tents for the new Patrol Leaders and new Scouts to learn to work together. After 64 years of running the Scout unit I have handed the meetings and camps over to Steve Plant who has helped me for twenty years. I still run all the extra activities and special evenings and back Steve up when needed. I started Scouts at the Reading Room (by Barnwood Avenue) with two patrols, then on to our own H.Q just inside Barnwood Avenue. We increased to two Cub Units which I ran with eight patrols of Scouts and a Senior Scout section. We moved to Hucclecote in 1974 again in our own H.Q. There have been many changes over the years and although we have changed we still do basic Scouting with open fires and patrol cooking at camp. Please phone Terry on 521664 if you have any children (boys and girls) interested in coming along for an evening of interesting games and activities. Age range 6 to 14.

Hucclecote District Guiding are holding their annual Easter Fayre at Dinglewell Junior School on April 8th 11.00am to 1pm Come and join in the Easter Egg hunt, visit a variety of stalls, & enjoy some refreshments. All ages welcome 20p entry

Hucclecote Garden Club As the last of the snowdrops disappear from our gardens and the wonderful displays of daffodils and primroses greet us now each day, it is time to look ahead and prepare our gardens for what we hope will be a good year for both flowers, vegetables, fruit and salad crops. With this in mind we have invited Mr. Richard Baldwin from Worcester to speak to the Garden Club on Organic Gardening in the Hucclecote Community Centre on Thursday 27th April, at 7.30pm. Mr. Baldwin offers a wide range of talks from Wildlife Gardening, The Magic of pH, Crop Rotation, etc., etc. We hope we will be able to pick up some useful tips from his vast gardening experience. For our next talk on Thursday 25th May we look forward to welcoming Paul Green from Newent who runs his own Specialist Nursery and gives 'hands on' talks on a variety of plants. We also hope he will be sharing his experience of the ups and downs of running your own horticultural business in these rather uncertain times. Anyone interested in gardening is very welcome to come along to our talks which are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at Hucclecote Community Centre at 7.30pm. Further information from Joy on Gloucester 553185 or Sue on Gloucester 543573. To advertise call 01452 890242

Our speaker in February was Margaret Daniels (“The Bard of Barnwood”). Margaret makes up poems and rhymes of everyday occurrences, general observations but with very funny twists. She had us all in laughter and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We have lots of things happening this coming year such as pub quiz nights, a bowls and buffet night, a strawberry tea and a host of forthcoming speakers. The Larkhay WI meets at the Hucclecote Community Centre on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Phone Beverley on Gloucester 613208 or Ellen on Gloucester 611976 for more information, we look forward to hearing from you. Or if you feel that you would like to come along, just pop in and you would be made very welcome.

Glevum Probus Club We are a friendly non political club which meets at the St Lawrence Church Centre, Barnwood on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month throughout the year with the exception of December when on the 2nd Wednesday in that month the AGM ends the year. Earlier in the year we had talks on Contemporary Spies, The first decent of the Grand Canyon and The Slapton Sands Disaster. Coffee, tea and biscuits are served from 10am and the meetings commence at 10.30am and last for 1 to 1 ¼ hours dependant on the speaker.

Future talks are on the following subjects.

Wed April 12th - Brian Bailey:- From source to sea (River Severn) Ladies Day when members bring their partners. Wed April 26th - Norman Saunders:-Doing the ring If you require any further information please feel free to contact

Terry Cruttenden on 01452 612432

HUCCLECOTE TOWNSWOMENS GUILD Our first meeting of the New Year was well attended, and we were pleased to welcome nine visitors! Guests and visitors are always welcome, and we hope to see these new faces at our future meetings. The Guild meets at 7.30pm on the third Thursday each month, when we have speakers covering a wide range of topics and interests, tea coffee and biscuits, and the opportunity to chat and socialise. Outings and other events are organised throughout the year. Our speaker this month was Lyn Cinderey, on "Gloucester Ghost Walks". Lyn has studied the paranormal for many years, has appeared on television, and has published books on the subject. Her stories about the ghosts of Gloucester included sightings in the New Inn, Cafe Rene, St Michaels Tower and the Black Cat Bar in the Dick Whittington. Lyn, as Gloucester's "Ghost Lady", has led walks around these locations for many years; we were lucky to have her tell us about them in a well-lit warm room! Forthcoming speakers are Peter Berry who will take us "Around the World in 80 Images", and Marion Beagley on "English is a Crazy Language". For further information, phone Linda on 617701
