THE LIONHEART GALLERY
The Lionheart Gallery in Pound Ridge, New York is located in Northern Westchester’s Hudson River Valley on the border of Stamford and New Canaan, Connecticut. The Lionheart Galley has beautifully lush grounds with a pond and a aviary garden. Gallery Director Susan Grissom curates each exhibit from work chosen from the artists’ studio. We have eight exhibitions a year. Our inventory consists of painting, printmaking, fine art photography,Mixed Media and Sculpture. We also have a small works library with affordable works of art, art books, and art gifts. Our hours are Wednesday thru Saturday from 11 to 5 and Sunday from 12 to 5. and by appointment. Those traveling a distance would be advised to call ahead, as the gallery is occasionally closed for private viewings with collectors. Group visits welcomed with notice.
THROUGH OUR LENS, THOUGHTFULLY The Lionheart Gallery represents photographers who create captivating images exploring diverse subject matter and styles, and they all share important commonalities. Masters of bending formalism to their will, our photographic artists are technically proficient, their work is propelled forward by the traditions and equipment of the past, and many favor alternative process photography as a means of achieving hyper-realized narratives that prove entrancing and often enigmatic. The Lionheart Gallery has curated a collection of fine art photographs whose visual tone poems are built upon a mastery of historical and contemporary processes—albumen prints, gelatin silver printing, platinum palladium photographs, cyanotypes, archival pigment printing, and more. Peter Massini works digitally, while hanging out of a helicopter; Thomas Bernsten flirts with lyrical Surrealism; Ann George employs pixels, paper, ink and paint in poetic fusions; Deborah Parkin explores Freudian themes of isolation and longing with a 6x6 medium format camera, from a base in the North Pennines of England; Mary West Quin works with an 8x10 view camera and platinum palladium prints to question the nature of human existence and relationships; Emma Powell utilizes hand-applied photographic emulsions to build fictional narratives. Read on to explore the work of those and our other photographers in more detail, and get in touch with any questions at 914.764.8689. The gallery’s website is http:// www.thelionheartgallery.com.

JENNIFER SCHLESINGER
Jennifer Schlesinger is an Artist, Curator, Gallerist, and Educator based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Schlesinger has approached her fine art photography with an interest in the historical development of photography as an artistic medium - having influences from the age old camera obscura, to 19th century albumen process, to 20th century gelatin silver printing. She is interested in how the evolution of photography can expand upon the development of photography as an art form. Her artistic mediums of choice have been the 19th Century albumen process and gelatin silver printing processes and her work mostly focuses on the landscape and how humans philosophically interact with the natural world around them. She uses photography as a tool to capture the world around her both poetically and metaphorically, and is highly influenced by the investigation of life through philosophy. Jennifer graduated from the College of Santa Fe in 1998 with a B.A. in Photography and Journalism. Schlesinger has exhibited widely at Southwest regional institutions such as the Marion Center for Photographic Arts (SFUAD), Santa Fe Art Institute and the New Mexico Museum of Art, as well as national institutions such as the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Chelsea Art Museum. Her work has been published online and in print with international publications such as Black and White Magazine (U.S and UK), the cover article for Diffusion Magazine Volume III, and Fotoritim in Turkey. Schlesinger is represented in many public collections, including the Southeast Museum of Photography, FL; The New Mexico Museum of Art, and the New Mexico History Museum / Palace of the Governors Photo Archives. She has received several honors in recognition of her work including a Golden Light Award in Landscape Photography from the Maine Photographic Workshops and the Center for Contemporary Arts Photography Award in Santa Fe, New Mexico, both in 2005. She has been awarded many distinctive nominations such as the Santa Fe Prize for Photography by the Center and the Eliot Porter Fellowship by the New Mexico Council for Photography. She was the Assistant Director of Santa Fe Art Institute from 2003-2005 and was the Director of VERVE Gallery of Photography since from 2005-2017. She is now the Owner and Director at Obscura Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Schlesinger has taught Adjunct at the College of Santa Fe and continues to teach via workshops through the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Art Intersection, and other venues.

ANN GEORGE
I grew up with people and places that grounded my roots deep into the southern soil and my heart into Louisiana’s personality. I sense the South, within its old things that still have purpose, in its soft blanket of pine straw beneath my feet and its suffocating summer nights and in the storytelling beneath its branches of culture and history. These southern memories will always be part of who I am and the work I do. I utilize photography for more than a means l to capture a moment in time, but as a voice to capture a movement through and to something and it propels my artist eye to such a beginning and an end. In an effort to create images that reflect a sense of nostalgia, I blend modern Photoshop techniques, oils, glazes, and waxes to create texture and depth. I meld pixels, paper and paint to create photographic fusions that celebrate my native Louisiana as well as people, places and stories that move me. I make a humble attempt to portray the role of inspirational storyteller through imagery and look for ways to satisfy my vintage eye in the camera, in the computer, in the printing, and in the paint. Ann George is a visual artist who melds pixels, paper, ink and paint to create compelling photographic fusions. She also prints her work using a polymer photogravure process. She has won numerous awards both nationally and internationally, participated in exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. She has been published in multiple periodicals and books and has lectured in the United States and Canada. Critics have commented that her photographic approach is mysterious and poetic and continues a pictorial tradition important in the history of photography. She continues to create images that call to her vintage eye, propelling her to seek different approaches and techniques in the camera, in the computer, in printing, and in paint.

MARY WEST QUIN
Mary West Quin’s work explores a paradox of photography, which makes fleeting ideas and feelings into permanent images. She draws on concepts from anthropology and philosophy to explore the space between camera and subject that often mirrors the spaces within and between people. Working with an 8x10 view camera and platinum/palladium prints, Quin stays grounded in the historical roots and questions of photography — permanence, concerns of objectivity, and the nature of human existence and relationships. “My upbringing was a hybrid, with elements of the Deep South—with all that means in popular culture—and aspects from other areas. I grew up at fishing camps and on boats around barrier islands in the Gulf. My parents resented many of what are considered stereotypical social mores and roles of the south. We never drank sweet tea and I didn’t wear smocked dresses. Our family friends were diverse in every manner. An examined life was the ultimate value in our home. We learned at a young age to distinguish between character and personality. While some southern values are endearing and nurturing, others are oppressive and alienating. I find the superficial niceties of the south tiresome. I have found, though, that there are wonderful people who feel the same and we seem to find one another. I want to believe that being genuine and kind is a significant contribution to the evolution of the Deep South. The word oppressive is often synonymous with the Deep South. I think it is fair and common to claim that both the climate and the social conventions can be oppressive. When I think of this use of the word oppressive, I think of needing to do constant maintenance, altering my thermostat physically and psychologically. What a fabulous way to continue to grow and defy becoming complacent. Oppression is uncomfortable. For some this means to find a good air-conditioned room and sweet tea. For me, it keeps me searching. I find that beneath the lingering oppressive conventions are human beings longing to belong in the world. I have been blessed (at times cursed) with the comfort of being an outsider, a constant observer. When I’m printing, it keeps me present. The moisture in the air has a huge influence on a print.”

EMMA POWELL
My photographic work focuses on fictional narrative. I create art that visualizes curious scenarios in order to convey a message or feeling instead of a record of a moment. I utilize a range of hand-applied photographic emulsions in order to visualize the distance between fantasy and reality, as well as to make prints that appear as objects instead of windows. The photographic processes I use are chosen intentionally to evoke another place or time that is removed from the every day, adding layers of narrative meaning through historical references or material qualities. I first directly addressed photographic storytelling in my MFA thesis, A Life Reviewed: George Eastman Through the Viewfinder. For this project, I explored the relationship between biography and art. To tell the story of the life of George Eastman, the founder of Kodak, I digitally photographed subjects seen in the viewfinders of old Kodak cameras. By photographing antique cameras, I integrated Eastman’s greatest legacy into each image. A Life Reviewed combined historical research with a nostalgic imagining of the past. The project was an account of a human life, pieced together after the fact. Each image related to a place within Eastman’s story, as well as my own journey to discover Rochester, New York, and its importance in the history of photography. I was honored to have this body of work first shown in what were once George Eastman’s private quarters at the George Eastman House, now the George Eastman Museum, one of the premier photographic collections in the world.

JERRY POZNIAK
Jerry Pozniak studied photography ages ago, in the pre-digital era when film was king, at the School of Visual Arts. Ironically, he did see the value in computer generated art, as he established the “Artists Who Use Computers” group at SVA. Who knew that this was the writing on the wall for the demise of film? After graduation, he worked for two years as studio manager for the studio of Al Francekevich, who’s speciality was large format special effect images, all manipulated in the darkroom. Photography stayed with Jerry thorough his career as a small business owner (alas not in photography), but he never felt comfortable with the digital process. Three years ago he happened upon The Penumbra Foundation in New York City, and enrolled in a course in wet-plate photography. Wet-plate photography was “the” process in the late 1800’s and predates the use of film. Jerry fell in love with the slow meditative nature of wet-plate. It is “anti-digital”, as the process is entirely hand-made and one image can take as long as fifteen minutes to create. At The Penumbra Foundation, he studied with Lisa Elmaleh, Geoffrey Berliner, Jolene Lupo and Sam Dole; without their support and guidance he would not have been able to work though the technical and creative issues to produce a full body of work.

PETER MASSINI
Peter Massini is a multi-disciplined photographer currently working on a wide spectrum of project types, from commercial and editorial location assignments to Fine Art. An aerial photography specialist, his care, proficiency, and attention to detail are only sharpened when he is forced from the common comfort of terra firma. Peter’s adventurous spirit finds him hanging from the open door of a helicopter on almost a daily basis, persistent in his quest for the best possible shot on each and every assignment. This persistence and tenacity are vividly evident in the stunning work he produces for clients, as well as in his dazzling, large-format iconography of NYC, which he has placed in private and corporate settings worldwide. From early in his photographic journey, Peter has shown a keen sense for relational and geometric pattern, specifically in his landscape and cityscape work. He has spent the past decade - plus honing this intuition through his frequent work from helicopters. This particular focus has brought a fresh, compelling aspect to his advertising and editorial assignments, but is perhaps expressed most dramatically in his personal artistic endeavors.

THOMAS BERNTSEN
Tom was born in New York and, in1977, graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BS in Professional Photography. Setting up his business right away, he began photographing historically significant homes, large residential projects and commercial interiors for major prestigious magazines. Over a period of several years he expanded into studio work. He shifted his focus from the editorial work towards advertising and marketing work for high-end firms specializing in the decorative arts. Then, a little over 12 years ago, a new path was presented to Tom. Perhaps it was a moment of inspiration or of grace. He found himself needing to express himself creatively. Taking that moment in hand he photographed a dried leaf in a theatrical manner. This was to begin a new way of life and became a body of work called Dancing Leaves. From this sprang a body of sculptural works and began a search for meaningful imagery. Having a meditative practice he uses the mythical labyrinth archetype to build sculpture and photographs. “My work is a reminder of the irrepressible beauty in the cycle of time. I observe another realm where elements resembling structure, vague mythical landscape, or sensuous form reflect a dream state that is so familiar, so present. Become a witness on a journey. While in meditation and carried away out of self, I dip into a reservoir of fleeting fragments of imagery, a couplet of words from a poem, or a lyrical run of musical notes. These treasures are gathered from my experience and gently coax me to acknowledge that another dimension exists within where all is well, beautiful and complete …until a divine realization comes. I am not done with my changes.”

MUSINGS ON A LABYRINTH THOMAS BERNTSEN
Recently a friend asked me what I was up to. I found myself quite absentmindedly saying to her, “Biding my time absorbed in a labyrinth.” I was struck by how true that statement was. After all, one doesn’t get lost in the labyrinth for there is only one path in and the same out. It’s only sometimes the Walker who gets lost, as I have in my “musings on a labyrinth”, a portfolio of photographic images. My intention with these images is to have them evolve into large scale sculptural installations. All prints are Editions of 25
