A BUSINESS IN BLOOM

THE ROSE GARDEN

“In what felt like a whirlwind 6 weeks, we managed to get the suppliers back on board and the doors re-opened, to the great relief of some of the regular customers both trade and public.”

When they met as colleagues, working at the Rose Garden in Frome, Jemima and Jennie had no idea that the business would one day belong to them.

“I have lived in Frome since I was 9 months old. I took off for the bright lights of London to study fashion merchandise management, but eventually realised that Frome was where my heart was, so I’ve lived here since leaving university. I have had various jobs, but when I started working for the original owners of the Rose Garden I knew I’d found my passion,” said Jennie.

Jemima has a strong background in design, having worked as commercial interior designer for high end hospitality establishments such as the Albion in Clifton Village and the Seymour Arms in Blagdon. Her passions have always been based on beautiful products and thoughtful design. Completing a bachelor’s in fashion and textiles, Jemima always wanted to make a career in design but found that interiors was a far better fit for her. Having moved from Clifton in Bristol during the first lockdown in 2020, she has fallen in love with Frome, and now puts her extensive creative talents into running the Rose Garden day-to-day, and offering design advice and ideas to customers.

Having worked at the Rose Garden in its infancy, Jennie has seen the company become an important part of the town’s independent businesses. “Over the years, so many customers have expressed what a unique place the Rose Garden is, offering the opportunity for the people of Frome to use the variety of interior design tools from a multitude of companies, with friendly experts who were happy to help in any way. Up until the pandemic, this came with tea/coffee and biscuits (which we plan to reintroduce as soon as possible).”

When the Rose Garden closed its doors in January this year, staff were all uncertain as to whether it would open again, so when the owners made the difficult decision to downsize their commitments and leave the Rose Garden closed, they offered the staff the opportunity to buy the business.

“Jennie and I met up for a glass of wine (or two) at the lovely Bar Lotte and realised we both saw that the Rose Garden had the potential to be one of only a few independent interior design stores, offering not only amazing products but expert knowledge and a passion to assist clients with their most important environment: the sanctity of their home. We decided to take the leap and try to save the Rose Garden. In what felt like a whirlwind 6 weeks, we managed to get the suppliers back on board and the doors re-opened, to the great relief of some of the regular customers both trade and public.”

The Rose Garden is dedicated to selecting brands that are environmentally sound, ensuring the businesses that supply them have paid attention to their carbon footprints, and that the products they sell are low VOC and environmentally friendly. As well as supplying well-known brands such as Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, Mylands, the Sanderson Design Group, Designers Guild, Johnstones, Paint and Paper Library, the Rose Garden is constantly looking out for new, as well as locally produced products.

“As is fitting for Frome, we will remain a local independent store owned and run by Jemima and me. We became firm friends from the moment Jemima started working at the Rose Garden, and we are delighted to be on this adventure together! All we need now is for the wonderful people of Frome to support us.”
