need a pet. After my beloved and faithful hound passed away, I have been in an odd state (for me) of living without an animal companion. I think this is the first time in 43 years that this can be said. As someone who used to be a dog walker, I now find myself a little awkward walking through the fields alone, no busy hair ball whizzing around my feet, nothing to whistle or throw a stick for. I grew up surrounded by animals: chickens, lambs, dogs, cats, a rabbit and guinea pig, and even a hive of bees.
The rabbit and guinea pig were a rather depressing combo as, like many a double act, each had a deep dislike of the other. They also hated me, yet still I feel that I let them down dreadfully, bestowing upon them names unworthy for even the most unloved pets: Bunny and Guinea. We had one especially dull cat who often vomited under my brother’s bed, and one exciting tom who came for walks with us and disappeared for days at a time on his wayward travels, returning to sleep in my bed like a long ginger hot water bottle. We had Jumble, an heroic

hound, who accompanied me and my youthful cohort on our many adventures in the fields and hay barns, and then the tiny and rather angry terrier Mo joined us, bringing much hilarity but very little in the way of affection. I hand-raised a chick, from a tiny black fuzzball into a huge cockerel. We called him Pip, and he used to follow me everywhere, once even to the village shop. We woke up early to bottle feed the lambs and I read them bedtime stories and gave them soppy names.
We all have hangovers from childhood, and if you become a parent you bring those into your parenting, both the good and the bad. For me, a childhood spent with animals was bliss, and I have a strong desire to provide that same experience for my children. My old nemesis ‘Practicality’ has managed to get in the way of our impending menagerie thus far, but one day, a larger garden, a little more free time, and it will happen. It’s a small and simple dream, but I’ll be honest – that’s my favourite kind.

Artists Siân Martin, Lesley Roberts and Pauline Lerry have been visiting Avalon Marshes to walk, record and work. Over their years of living in Somerset they have visited Avalon and experienced its sense of timelessness and its beauty. The marshes evoke a connection to the past and an awareness of the resourcefulness of the people: the Summer People. Living with the water, the pathways over the marshes, the industry that has taken place there is playing an essential part in nature conservation. As well as responding to this area through making artwork, they hope to draw attention to how valuable our nature reserves are in supporting well being, and the vital role they play in ensuring the survival of the planet.
Siân Martin is a textile artist. She works in two and three dimensions using textile media and local materials such as willow. She aims to create a sense of the atmosphere of the wetland landscape and the contrasting textural effects of the marsh.
pies and sausage rolls. It’s the month when Frome beekeepers bring this year’s honey to market, so treat yourself to a jar or two - perfect with creamy Somerset butter and locally baked bread. Head to the Market Yard, where you’ll find beautiful cut flowers and plants plus seasonal fruit and veg straight from a local farm.
The market’s charity partner for October is the amazing Withywood CIC, a new organisation offering opportunities for adults with additional needs in the beautiful walled Secret Gardens of Berkely.
Harvest is traditionally a time of charitable giving, and this month market organisers are teaming up with Fair Frome, asking visitors to donate non-perishable food items to a harvest festival collection. With a drop-off point by Loop de Loop, next to Frome Library, Fair Frome are looking for tinned goods, store cupboard staples such as sugar, rice and pasta to support local people through times of crisis.
Lesley Roberts works with photography, taking it through to screen printing and collage. Through layered imagery, she aims to create an impression of the history, beauty and timelessness the marshes evoke.
Pauline Lerry paints and makes mixed media collages. She focusses on the trackways, the marsh waters, the quality of light and surface patterns. Her work also refers to the precious sustainable natural materials of the marshes.

Baroque Alchemy is a unique fusion of old and new, bringing together the simplicity of one of the earliest wind instruments, the recorder, with the 21st century technological wizardry of the electronic keyboard. The repertoire, mostly drawn from the Baroque era, explores the myriad possibilities of this combination in a variety of ways – from the authentic reproduction of acoustic instruments to space-age sound worlds of which the composers could only have dreamt. Baroque Alchemy’s vision is to break free from the constraints of the classical music world and reimagine some of their favourite music in a way which they hope is engaging and inspiring.

She sets off on 5th October, and after an easy first day exploring Mount Nebo and the Dead Sea, the small group she is joining will set off on a five-day trek through rugged arid mountain territory, following the same path used by the Bedouin nomads. The Prince and the Knave takes extracts from Shakespeare’s Henry IV plays to tell the story of the tortuous relationship between Prince Hal, the future Henry V, and the down-at-heel knight Sir John Falstaff. With his incomparable wit, Shakespeare mingles comedy, drama and pathos in the tale of the young prince coming of age and at last finding his destiny, while the boastful, blustering Falstaff follows haplessly in his wake.

Five Yard Coffee is Frome’s hottest new hangout and event space based up at McEwan’s Customs classic car garage, offering specialist coffees from Round Hill Roastery, small batch cakes and tasty treats. Five Yard is the result of a collaboration between Euan of Moo and Two, Frome’s hugely popular indy coffee shop on Catherine Hill and front-of-house extraordinaire Rhi and her husband Jake McEwan, owner of McEwans Customs, a classic car and motorbike garage. Coffee is served from what was the Moo and Two custombuilt coffee shack, which has been a fixture at many festivals and events over the summer seasons and has now set up permanent residency at the Yard.
‘Frome has been our home for many years - Jake and Rhi are Frome through and through - and we all have a deep affection for our town,’ explained Euan. ‘Our
shared love of coffee and everything classic means we had the same vision for Five Yard. We have really exciting plans for the space, including live music, classic car meets and bike nights. Our next gig will be Alan Power and the Take Twos on Friday 11th Oct. Beers, burgers and country music!’

Frome’s Missing Links, a local charity run entirely by volunteers that aims to create new, safe, off-road paths to connect Frome with surrounding areas, is looking for help to finish a 1.3km section of path near Great Elm.
The charity has just launched a crowdfunder to raise £20,000, which will unlock more funding from a generous private donor and Sustrans (the sustainable travel organisation) amounting to £100,000 in total. All money raised will go towards putting a longlasting tarmac surface on Phase 2 of the ‘missing link’, which runs from Great Elm to Hapsford.
Thousands of hours of volunteer labour have been spent seeking permissions, clearing the route, in some places pulling out the old rails from the unused railtrack, putting down the base layers, and planting and maintaining verges to protect it as an important wildlife corridor. At present, it is a rough stony surface, not accessible to all. The charity received an initial generous pledge in the Spring to match public donations to take the final step to lay tarmac, as long as the work could be completed within twelve months. Now, with more funding pledged from Sustrans too, this feels very achievable.
The surface will allow all users to enjoy the path, as well as ensuring it remains usable throughout the year.
The Frome to Radstock link is now even more tantalisingly close to completion.
Richard Ackroyd, Chair of Frome’s Missing Links says ‘Please help – all donations, no matter how small, will help us to reach our target, and we simply can’t do it without public support. There are some rewards to be claimed for certain donations too, from key-

rings to named benches, but these are limited, so it’s worth having a look sooner rather than later.’ Go to crowdfunder.co.uk and search ‘Frome Phase 2’ to make your donation.
Journalist, podcaster and author, Laura Laker, was delighted that Frome’s Missing Links launched this crowdfunder at her sell-out talk about her new book Potholes and Pavements at Frome Town Hall last Friday. She says, ‘We can all agree on a few things: that we want safer, quieter streets, cleaner air, cheaper transport options, places children can be independent, and ways for older people to keep their mobility and health for longer by staying active. Happily, it’s not super-complicated, but that’s not to say it’s easy. The Frome to Radstock link is now even more tantalisingly close to completion. I urge you to support Frome’s Missing Links campaign to see it happen.’
