Millennial Wedding Trends "We're Doing It Different Than You Did Mom"
MUST KNOW
We’re doing it differently than you did, mom...
“Millennial ” Wedding Trends
BY JULIANNE MOSHER – YOUR MILLENNIAL CORRESPONDENT
Millennials have so much information available with a simple swipe of the finger – we were practically raised on the internet. So now that young people are starting to plan their weddings, the trends and fads that were popular even just 10 years ago are long gone. Things have changed – and not in a bad way. Millennials love to pick and choose certain highlights from past generations. Don’t worry, many traditions are still valued… but here are some of our favorite things that brides-to-be are jumping on in 2019.
Using Pinterest for thrifty ideas
You really don’t need a wedding planner anymore; all you need is a smart phone, a computer, and the website Pinterest.com. On this site, there are thousands upon thousands of ideas available to young brides who literally have no idea where to start. Other couples share what they did at their weddings, and you can pick and choose what you like best. There are ideas for wedding invites, food, locations, floral arrangements, favors, and even dresses – plus so much more.
Making Everything
‘Instagrammable’
Social media has a huge influence over the millennial generation. Constantly connected to our phones, we document our lives on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. People have caught on to that virtual necessity, and have hashtags for Instagram photos dedicated to the wedding. Some include the last name of the new couple like, “HappilyEverAllen”, or something simpler like “JonesWedding2019.” The idea is to get creative, and puns or play on words are always welcomed. Hashtags are helpful because when you click on the tag, all the public photos taken at the wedding are viewable, so if you miss a moment you can see someone else’s pictures!

The big gaudy cakes are no more
And so are the little people that stand on top. Couples now like to monogram their initials or last name on top of the cake instead of the typical bride and groom figurines. Those giant wedding cakes with lace and over-the-top icing designs are no longer in fashion, as most young brides are actually choosing simpler cakes with fresh flowers on top. Some prefer a small cake - just for the cake cutting ceremony – and the guests get donuts or cupcakes!
WE LOVE TORTA FINA IN BABYLON FOR OUR DESSERTS.
“We try to conform to what the bride is looking for,” said Nina Wiebke of Torta Fina Bake Shoppe and Patisserie. Torta Fina offers donut walls and cupcake stands for rent for brides who prefer something a little more unconventional and fun. Some couples offer coffee bars at the end of the reception, and ask to serve some of Torta Fina’s famous biscotti at the coffee bar. Whatever the bride wants, the bride gets.

No more tacky favors
No guest wants a favor that will just sit on a shelf or in a china cabinet. So many bakeries offer edible treats for guests to take home. Manhattan Sweets Boutique Bakery in Islip offers macaroons, cupcakes, sugar cookies, and donuts all wrapped up nicely with a little bow. What sweet ways to say ‘thank you!’ for coming.
Don't worry mom...
Some traditions will never go out of style. Many of us will always want to do the father and daughter dance, throw the bouquet, and cut the cake in front of all our guests. We may just want to steer away from the Chicken Dance and Electric Slide for now.
