For the Children The rising hills, the slopes, of statistics lie before us. the steep climb of everything, going up, up, as we all go down. In the next century or the one beyond that, they say, are valleys, pastures, we can meet there in peace if we make it. PHOTOGRAPHY + CREATIVE DIRECTION + WORDS BY REMI LAI

ANOTHER SATURDAY MORNING It’s a beautiful Saturday morning and the sun has risen. Outside, the air is cool and crisp, but inside this old house, the greetings of young smiles warm the atmosphere. The oatmeal has just been made, the fruit, freshly washed and the children take their places around the table. There is little chatter over breakfast, but soon the quietness is gently broken with talks of quills and crayons, storybooks and surprises. Between the old-fashioned window panes in the loft and the fading upholstery in the family room are walls that whisper years of laughter and of being chased down the halls. Linger long enough, and you will hear the thumping of little feet down the narrow stairway. You can feel the sting of a small toy left upon the wooden floor and see the liveliness within a messy room. Such is the life of growing up, where amusement meets chaos. And someplace in-between, is a special kind of love that strengthens and beauty that grows.

Lucca Valentine Turns One A Flora and Fauna Party When your Mama is one of the best event stylists going around, and your Papa is film maker and DJ, you’re kind of going to have a cool party, its a given. But when darling Miss Lucca Valentine turned One, the celebration was one to behold. Tori Hendrix of Sitting In a Tree Events in California created the most whimsical party, Flora and Fauna style, each tiny detail was crafted with care, glitter and gold dipped to perfection. Tiny and not so tiny deer were placed ever so carefully to stand to attention for this little Lucca Valentine’s special day. Guests were treated to a picnic style feast of vegetarian food via a food truck and tables were practically dripping with tasty sweet treats on this sunny afternoon. Lucca and her furry siblings were crowned in floral wreaths fit for the loveliest little family. The garden was adored with antlers, floral and collected twiggy garlands in a bohemian relaxed way, draped like they had grown where they were placed. Guests were given laser cut deer ornaments to take home and also temporary tattoos another element of the cool factor. Lucca and her Mama have the most amazing style, in their home and in their personal style, Lucca wears the most darling vintage dresses, or gorgeous little outfits Tori puts together for her and she is such a little light beam, always smiley and ready to take on each day with her bright little eyes and her curly head of hair, and I’m sure you agree, she loved turning One and the soirée that was held in her honor. Turning one is a party that I think is very important to celebrate, the first year with your first baby is one you always remember, its a year that changes something deeply inside of you, one for the parents, friends and everyone to enjoy and gather joy from.

‘Children reinvent your world for you.’ Susan Sarandon

A BABY WELCOMING I love the idea of the ‘Sip and See’ a tradition Southern affair that invited guests come along to see the new baby and sip iced tea or champagne with baby’s new parents. Along with an afternoon tea its a lovely way for a new mother to show off her baby once she is ready, and also to everyone at once, rather than many different house calls over weeks, allowing her to rest and bond with baby. We put together a little Baby Welcoming shoot to inspire you, and have included some recipes that are not only delicious but you will enjoy making them for many occasions to come.

SWEET SOUTHERN ICE TEA

BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE & BLUEBERRY PAVOLAS

3 cups boiling water 1 family-size tea bag or 3 regular-size tea bags 1/2 to 3/4 cup granulated sugar or to taste 5 cups cold water Ice cubes garnish with Mint Pour boiling water over the tea bags. Set aside and let steep 5 minutes. Remove tea bags. In a large pitcher, add sugar and pour warm tea over sugar; stirring until sugar is melted. Add 5 cups cold water and stir until well mixed. Cool and serve in tall glasses over ice.

WORDS BY TESS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANE SHEPHERD

INSPIRED MAMA

My flower baby who changed my life, who opened me up, who taught me that I am strong and oh so loving and who I love with every inch of my being. My girl who has taught me that even when there’s bumps in our journey as long as we are loving each other than we’re ok. That despite all my trying to shield her from life there have been bumps, some that I wasn’t wanting or prepared for, some immensely challenging. Bumps that included Hyperemesis gravidarum (severe morning sickness), natural birthing and now single parenting. It was Dahlia that gifted me an opportunity to support, educate and empower women through their own Motherhood bumps. So I start my University studies this year to become a qualified counsellor. My girl, my flower, Dahlia Rose has helped me her Mamma to blossom in more ways than one.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON VANDERMEER

INSPIRED PAPA We asked photographer Jason Vandermeer to give us the low down on his life as a Father to his two beautiful children Archer and Milla, and a husband to his wife Lisa, and how it has inspired him creatively. He is our first Inspired Papa.

Tell us about You and your Business? I’m 34 years old and married to Lisa. We recently celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary We live on the Mornington Peninsula, and love it. I grew up the son of a wedding photographer. But for some reason I always wanted to have a job that required a briefcase. This led to me eventually studied Accounting at University and I started working in the Finance industry. Just over 2 years ago I started a Photography business as I had an urge and desire to feed my creative side. My aim was simple: to take honest photos of people - people in love with each other, in love with their family, in love with their life, and in love with their future. It is very much a family business. I shoot, and Lisa controls all the editing and back end processes. On weekends when I’m not shooting, we are often scouting locations for upcoming shoots. The kids love seeing new places and meeting new people.

| 77

78 |

What are some of your favorite things about Milla and Archer? Where do I start. I can’t explain the joy that being parents has brought to both of our lives. It is by far our greatest love. Archer: His inquisitive nature His love of books His laugh. The way he constantly stubs his toes, just like me. His love of learning. Milla: Her confidence Her unwavering love of our dogs, Ruby & Hugo. When she starts laughing and she can’t stop...which is infectious. The way she runs, and dances. The way she misses her big brother when he is at school.

| 79

80 |

Has your photography style changed since becoming a father? Definitely. Prior to having children I was very much into street and landscape photography. Over the past 5 years my style has evolved into very much an emotive and documentary approach of everyday life. It has put life into perspective, and what truly is important. I strive to capture the moments of our lives together. Life is fast and children grow in the blink of an eye. I want them to look back with fond memories of how life was and the adventures we have had.

| 81

82 |

Describe what an ideal day with your family would include? We are a very close family. We do everything together. As parents we have always been conscious to expose our children to different places, people, and experiences to give them a greater perspective of the world. I guess my ideal day would include a few of the following things: All crammed into our bed for morning snuggle. Brunch, Coffee and Babyccinos An explore down at our favorite beach, Davey’s Bay. Take our dogs Ruby & Hugo for a walk. Have a family dinner together (and some ice cream if we all eat our dinner ) A quick game of hide and seek before bath time. Story time and read ‘We are going on a bear hunt’

How do you hope your children grow to remember childhood with you? I want them to look back on their childhood and with a smile, a laugh and a warm heart.

BLOOM

Jonathan on the shoot - I’ve known Chris & Christine for a while now, and did an Engagement session with them about 2 years ago. Chris & Christine are beautiful souls; they have such a generous heart and are an inspiration to many. So when they got pregnant and asked me to do a maternity shoot with them, I was thrilled. I like the idea that my journey with a couple doesn’t end after they get married, but that I have the honor and privilege to continue to tell their story. I wanted the shoot to be the least contrived it could be, so choosing locations that meant something to them and was part of their everyday life was essential. We took a walk to the pier down from their house; where Chris & Christine takes walk after a long day at work. We then just hung out at their home.

RISE AND SHINE It can be easy to overlook the start of a new day as a means to an end. Breakfasts are eaten on the run while chores are being done and the day’s schedule planned. It can make a refreshing change to stop and savor the morning, making a ritual of involving even the littlest family members in the preparation of a special meal (and letting them play while the hard work is being done). An easy menu with some special touches will ensure that everyone will come to the table in anticipation and leave happy and satisfied. Truly the start to a bright, sunshiny day.

Recipes Baby buttermilk pancakes Plain version I ½ cups buttermilk 1 egg, lightly beaten 3 tablespoons melted butter 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup plain white flour 3 tablespoons sugar ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt Put wet and sifted dry ingredients into a large bowl, whisk lightly together until all flour is just combined (over mixing can make the pancakes tough). If possible let batter rest for up to half an hour. Cook dessert spoonfuls of batter in a non-stick pan, over low heat, until golden and cooked through. Banoffee version: Make batter as in plain version above. In non-stick pan over low flame melt 2 teaspoons of butter and a teaspoon of brown sugar together until just combined. Add slices of banana to the pan and cook for a minute, or until slightly caramelized on one side. Add a spoonful of batter over each slice of banana to create individual pancakes. Cook as in plain version. Makes approximately 25 mini pancakes

Nutella hot chocolate 500 mls of milk 2 heaped tablespoons Nutella 1 tsp drinking chocolate (optional) Pinch of salt Whipped cream and chocolate shavings to serve, if desired Combine milk, Nutella and salt in a saucepan. Whisk over medium heat until Nutella has dissolved and milk is hot (but not boiling). For a richer drink add a teaspoon of drinking chocolate. Pour into cups and garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Serves two adults and two children, use small cups to serve as it is quite rich.

‘My favorite weather is bird-chirping weather.’

Terri Guillemets

BIRD WATCHING Birdwatching is a great outdoors activity. Wherever you go, you will see birds. In the city, in the parks, farmland, forests, mountains, at the sea, our feathered friends are everywhere. The fun part of birding is that different types of birds live in different areas and habitats, so you can find a spot and get lost in the joy of birdwatching. Starting out with your won neighbourhood is best to become familiar with the birds that live in your garden, the park, on walking tracks and more. Then you will soon become aware of the common species associated with each place, you can obsverve the birds with seasonal changes through the year, the breeding seasons, regular migrants and visiting birds. In no time at all you will begin to recognise different species, and eventually you will begin to notice that each has its own way of life, As you start exploring other places to watch these beautiful creatures, you will see more and more different species. Over 800 different species of birds have been recorded in Australia. Some are unmistakable, but others are a quite rare. Field guides are books with colour illustrations of all Australian birds, they have notes on how to identify them, and other information, such as lifestyle, calls and habits. You can even learn each brids call and strike up a conversation.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMELIA O’CONNOR

a letter to my children To my darling babies, How are you both on this beautiful day? Well, I hope. Sometimes the best way to say something important, is to write it down. This day and age, letter writing is becoming a thing of the past. When we need to say something, we often email, text, tweet or blog it. I wanted to put pen to paper - fingers to the keys, and write some very important things down for you guys to keep. Letters are one thing that can speak forever. I remember when I was a little girl, Grandma would write me a lot of little notes and letters, here and there. It is so wonderful to pick up a book and read a little note that was left behind many years ago. Now that Grandma is no longer with us, it is even more important to me. Her words will always be here with me, I can read it as if it were only written yesterday. I can even read it to you, and she can say it to you too. There is a special message that I wanted to pass on to you guys. It is something I learnt pretty early in life. It’s meaning may change over time but it is the one thing that you will keep coming back to. I am only a ‘spring chicken’, as I write this letter to you both I am not yet twenty seven. I am not claiming to know everything, far from it. I am still learning, still seeking. I learn new things every single day, I also learn that I am not always right. It is important for you both to continue to learn and to seek for yourselves. Help each other. Learning nourishes your soul. It will sustain you even when your chips are down. Okay, so what is this special message that I am talking about? It is the meaning of life. It is the meaning of happiness. It is the meaning of meanings. LOVE. Love is the key to happiness. Love is the key to creativity. Love is the key to the past, the present and the future. Love is ‘All You Need’. I have seen it with my own eyes. Love is the greatest thing on earth. It keeps the world moving. I remember the first time I met your Daddy. I knew straight away. I loved him, deeply. Love comes is many forms. The secret is to keep it and share it throughout your life, everywhere and anywhere. Reach out to the people you love and tell them, always. Love what you do. This is SO important. Don’t waste time and energy pretending to love something you don’t. Love it, live it and breathe it. By doing this, you will be the best person you can possibly be. Love your fears, love will help you overcome them. Love and respect people and humanity. Love and respect the earth. Treat others the way you expect to be treated. Be fair and listen. Love and respect go hand in hand. Love your life, it was a beautiful gift given to you both. Enjoy every single second, of every single day. You two little beings are just the greatest things in this entire universe. Daddy and I cannot believe how lucky we are to have you as our very own. We are just so chuffed that you picked us to be your parents. We love you both with every single cell in our bodies. You two made me a mother, and that is the greatest gift I could have ever received. Love created you. Love yourselves. Love each other. Mama xxxx

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARIA FOUNDER OF ‘AVE is BIRD’

MI CASA SU CASA Mi vida Hola! Welcome to my home; it’s a place where I create, where I feel joy, where love flows, where my familia grows and where our dreams come true…AVE is BIRD is one of my colourful dreams, one that’s inspired my childhood and by our beautiful chicas, Allegra 5 and Matisse almost 3. It’s important to us that they understand and celebrate their Italian/Salvadorean backgrounds by exposing them to different flavours, music, books, art etc…. AVE is BIRD studio is at home where the chicas can play around me while I work and create. They love being part of the process, I value their opinion as they often try the little Latin treasures before I decide to purchase or make it part of our range, they report back and tell me what they like and what they don’t like about the piece. I love hearing what they think as they are very in tune with what’s cool. I am lucky to have a relationship with suppliers and artists in El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala (and expanding) who want to share their vibrant culture with the rest of the world. The type of pieces I look for are hand-made, well-made and fair trade. Supporting these artists who create such beautiful pieces is part of the journey, most are mama’s looking after their kids at home while they work....much like myself. As an artist and crafter, being surrounded by the pieces makes my heart sing, they are beautiful works of art. Speaking of singing, in the AVE is BIRD website you will find Spanish nursery rhymes and stories, tasty family recipes and crafty sessions which have been given the ‘okai’ by the chicas! Stay around for a while, mi casa su casa.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER SANDO WORDS BY XAVIER SANDO AND JENNIFER SANDO

ALBUM REVIEW TOMMY What are Xavier’s favourite songs on the album? Smash the mirror, 1921, Tommy’s Holiday Camp. When was Xavier first introduced to the album? Just over a year ago... Where was he when he first heard it? I put it on in the car for him. We listen to music together a lot while driving. I remember how mesmerised he looked when he first heard the line, “It’s a boy, Mrs Walker, It’s a boy...”

Why do you think this is a special album for Xavier? It’s the only album that I have played over and over, and he never seems to tire of it. I think that he is intrigued by the theatrical elements. I also think it’s a bit of a mixed bag of goodies for him - he can sing along to it, rock along to it, sit back and chill to the slower numbers. I see him pondering as he tries to evaluate Townshend’s lyrics, or visualise the character of Tommy in his head. He senses that the album is an unusual one because of the journey and the dramatic story that Townshend orchestrated so well musically. What’s cooler than that, possibly, is that we both love this album for the same reasons. What is your favourite song on the album to listen to with Xavier? The overture, without a doubt. We both have pretend guitars and trumpets, and God knows what other instruments, and then we move our body in line with the notes - we have hand movements to match. We’re like a crazy mother and son conductor team. We look pretty awful doing it. But it feels good. And we make sure we do it when Dad is not watching...

“Rock opera” is one way to describe this exploration of childhood trauma and spiritual release. Here’s another way: the slash and thunder of “My Generation” blown wide open. Driven by Keith Moon’s hellbent drumming, the Who surge and shine, igniting the drama in Pete Townshend’s melodies.” Rolling Stone Magazine
