Today, the finest journalism instructors, professionals and students have gathered to learn from each other. As the officers of the Iowa High School Press Association, we have planned a program that will help you with your journalistic endeavors during this year and beyond.
Specifically, we hope you’ll walk away inspired and with a better understanding of your options and opportunities in this important and ever-changing field. We are the Fourth Estate, and we take our charge with utmost sincerity. News media, yearbooks, magazines, broadcasting, design – find your passion here today.

On the spot contest News writing- Attend keynote, report to Miller room 259 (2nd floor) at 9:40 and turn in work by 10:30. Photography- Digital Photography entrants will cover the conference until 10:25 a.m., at which point the shooting will stop and entrants will meet by the registration desk with their equipment and follow an IHSPA representative to the Adler Journalism Building to upload their TOP 5 PHOTOS. Entrants will have until noon to finish their selection of photos. Anyone who has not picked their Top 5 photos by noon will be disqualified. No cutlines/captions need to be written. Every Reporter is an Investigative Reporter
That mantra has guided Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter Stephen J. Berry from the days when he covered the local police beat or city hall to uncovering corruption and negligence for the Los Angeles Times. Berry, who now teaches investigative reporting as an associate professor of journalism at the University of Iowa, says that if you want to become your future editor’s go-to reporter for the big stories, all you have to do is develop the investigative mentality.
