Valentine’s Day Events Wise, Witty and Real; A Truly Southern Story Barter Theatre premieres a Southern story guaranteed to warm your heart. “Walking Across Egypt” begins on February 14 at Barter Main Stage, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Written

by Catherine Bush and based on the best‐selling novel by Southern writer Clyde Edgerton, this wise and witty story stars Barter audience favorite Mary Lucy Bivins and is directed by Eugene Wolf.

The story follows Mattie Rigsbee (Mary Lucy Bivins), an older Southern woman with a deeply held faith and a habit of taking care of others. Lately, she feels like no one needs her and that she might be slowing down.

Her world is turned upside down when she harbors a sullen and rebellious juvenile delinquent, and then, of all things, brings him to church with her!

Mattie is going to do her best to woo the young man to the side of good, if only she can keep out of trouble, herself.

Director Eugene Wolf knows that audiences will see their own !"#$%$&'( )&*%&+,&-( $.( ,/&( +/")"+,&)'( in the play. North Carolina author Clyde Edgerton named his book after a Southern hymn, and although the show is not a musical, the world of the play is made richer by having a live church choir on stage.

Hymns like “Walking Across Egypt,” “Amazing Grace,” “This Little Light of Mine” and “Softly and Tenderly” as arranged by Eugene Wolf add depth to the story.

“The integration of some music was important for us because music is such a large part of the Appalachian culture and the story is set in a small town in North Carolina,” said Producing Artistic Director Richard Rose.

“This is a great opportunity to see an artist who has worked with Madonna, Ringo Starr, Wynton Marsalis, the Boston Pops and Les Paul. His résumé is pretty extensive and pretty incredible.”

His repertoire is as extensive as his range. Gershwin ballads, Beethoven symphonies, Rodgers and Hammerstein show tunes, Lennon‐McCartney love songs and Django Reinhardt riffs all share equal billing in Vignola’s programs. This virtuosity, range and his unique gypsy technique earned him a spot on legendary guitarist Les Paul’s list of Top 5 Guitarists in the world.

“One of the unique things about him is the man has no limits,” says Jeremy Fritts, guitar instructor for Bluegrass, Old‐Time and Country Music at ETSU. “He’s thought of as a jazz guitar player … and he has

this style that is rooted in the gypsy jazz style of playing, but he brings that style to classical and rock, and he collaborates with people known as bluegrass musicians like David Grisman.

“Our dancers are really getting the hang of it and the skill level is really getting better”, states event organizer David Wiley. She was a featured caller at the Catapult Showcase last May in Atlanta and loves to put together programs that are both accessible to beginners and interesting for advanced dancers.

The work continues until the 1956 vintage Herschel frame is in its own round house connected to the Farmers’ Market and all animals have a place on the carousel with children of all ages riding. Completion date is set for spring 2014 so there is a lot of work to be done and a great way to get to know great people!

Duty Free Bluegrass Band Carter Family Memorial Music Center February 16th

Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by the Duty Free Band.

Admission to the concert is $8 for adults, $1 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free.

Duty Free is a bluegrass band based in Bristol, Tennessee.

Members of the band are Bobby Love, Charlie Powers, Rick Powers, Hal Boyd, and Tim Laughlin. Bobby plays mandiolin and demonstrates his versatility as a musician by singing both lead and harmony. He’s a songwriter as well who has written several tunes performed by the group. Charlie plays both lead and rhythm guitar and sings lead and harmony. Rick plays banjo in the traditional Scruggs

style and also lends his vocal talent to the band.

Hal Boyd anchors the group’s rhythm with his double bass playing and provides the baritone harmony ‐ as well as lead and bass vocals ‐ on many of Duty Free’s tunes. Tim Laughlin, long noted in bluegrass circles for his #2'$+"%( ,"%&.,;( C%"3'( *$--%&( !1)( the band.

Duty Free was formed a few years ago to provide music for a local restaurant. From that humble beginning, friendships and a bluegrass band resulted.

One year later, Shivering Timbers met and hit it off with Brian Olive (Greenhornes, Dr. John). San Cristobal de las Casas is a city located in the central highlands region of the southernmost Mexican state of Chiapas. Among the sites on the planned itinerary are the modern cities of Chiapa de Corzo and Comitán, and well as the indigenous villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán and the Mayan archeological '$,&'( 1!( d&%&.U2&;( @"Q+/$%".( ".-( Bonampak. Bristolians like all types of music as long as it is good and done well. Bristol Recovery Road for Women Announces Purchase of Home for Recovery “This is a wonderful step in faith that BRRW volunteers have been working towards for several years,” says board president Marjorie Tester. “We have been so blessed to have found a home for this much needed program that will serve women in our community.”

BRRW is a faith based residential program for women established to provide a safe and healthy facility for women referred to the program. BRRW seeks to give women a new beginning with the needed skills and support to break the cycle faced by women who face addiction or life controlling issues.

BRRW is a 501(c)3 organization established in March 2008 by local women who felt the need to help women in a faith based healing environment. Women in the program can earn their GED, learn about better nutrition for their families, and gain skills needed to become employable.

Once a woman is accepted into the program, they will live in the home, learn to care for themselves, and participate in parenting classes. Recovery counseling and support will be a part of their daily routine.

Their new CD, My New T"D1)$,&';( )&*%&+,'( ,/",( !2'$1.5( “Got To Have That Giving”, shows how piano, organ and claw hammer banjo can happily groove together on the same track. And the rock and roll accordion solo on “Go” is kind of like Chuck Berry gone Cajun.

My New Favorites are songwriters as well as performing musicians. They write about 95% of the music they play. Jeff Benedict is a singer and songwriter who plays guitar and banjo in the band. He writes most of the band’s songs.

Linda Waltner is a classically trained violinist, but doesn’t let that get in the way of being a *$)',[)",&( *$--%&)5( =$:/,( ",( /1#&( with Mozart or Mumford, she can also do old‐time and Celtic.

Amy Benedict, “the little girl with the great big bass,” is a veteran performer on the old time scene. A lifelong singer and dancer, she brings strong melodies and harmonies to the band’s vocal mix.

Tracy Johnson plays the keyboards and the accordion for us, and does a great job singing.

She’s the only one in the band to play Carnegie Hall! Her strong musical style helps drive the music forward through every performance.

Grover’s grant project speaks to the strong history of rural health care training at ETSU and the collaborative process between the university and the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center (VAMC) at Mountain Home. Throughout 2013, the funding will provide further, focused rural health training events consisting of on‐site “Train the Trainer” sessions and online experiential and interactive learning.

The College of Nursing’s Center for Nursing Research is administering the grant and will work to provide the training and conduct follow‐up interviews with participating VA team leaders who – as a result of the training – develop process improvement projects. INCOMING! Cosmic Debris Headed Our Way

P$8&( +2C$-I'( "))14'( *%3$.:( to a heady destination, cosmic missiles are in‐coming to our friendly Solar System.

The day after kissing your sweetie for a red hot Valentine’s Day, things are heating up in the Earth’s network of satellites as an asteroid buzzes by inside the orbit of those man‐made machines broadcasting our television shows.

Have no fear, though this close

shave is just another reminder that we are only one good cosmic whack away from a terrible catastrophe on Earth.

The invasion of 200‐foot‐ wide asteroid designated “DA 14” inside our earthly comfort zone will happen Feb. 15 at 2:30 pm EST. The closest approach of this 130,000‐ ton space rock half ,/&('$F&(1!("(!11,7"%%(*$&%-(4$%%(7&( 17,200 miles above the sleeping population of Europe, well inside

the orbits of geosynchronous satellites. And you can actually watch the closest approaching of this moving piece of rock by %1::$.:( 1.( ,/&( 0.,&).&,( ,1( 9%11/( Space Camera for a live feed of the passing space rock.

Astronomers say this close '/"D&( 1!( ,/&( "',&)1$-( *%3$.:( 73( Earth at 20,000 mph‐‐eight ,$#&'(,/&('C&&-(1!("()$*%&(72%%&,[ ‐is unprecedented in the history of skywatching for Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHA).

There are many telescopes around the world dedicated

,1( *$.-$.:( 'C"+&( -&7)$'( ,/",( threatens Earth. First seen in 2012, DA 14 is such an asteroid, and though close, it has no chance of hitting Earth‐‐this time at least! When the space rock swings back by Earth in 30 years, that might be a different story.

0!(,/$'()",/&)('#"%%('C"+&()1+8( did hit Earth, it might leave a three‐quarter‐mile‐wide crater, like out in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix. Astronomers predict that an impact with Earth by an object the size of DA 14 is a likely event every 1,200

years or so.

As for other Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) being tracked by a network of space watchers funded by NASA, well, there are currently 1,380 or so 300 feet in size or larger being closely watched. Astronomers *$:2)&( ,/",( #$:/,( 7&( LO( C&)+&.,( of the threatening asteroid they can see!

There is a possibility that skywatchers with binoculars and telescopes will see DA 14 in the night skies of Eastern E2)1C&;( <'$"( ".-( <2',)"%$"5( ( 0,( will move across the sky from southwest to northeast just below the visibility of the human eye, covering an amazing half a degree of sky a minute‐‐the size of the Full Moon. Large telescopes have been providing images of DA 14 for months.

The three‐hour journey in Earth’ neighborhood by asteroid DA 14 will go through a region that has very few satellites, and pose no threat. The 17,000 mile distance is just below the 22,000 mile height of the communication satellites, and Continued on page 23

0.+)&-$7%3;( LOO( ,1.'( 1!( 'C"+&( debris smashes into the Earth’s atmosphere every day! Mostly in the form of cosmic particles the size of grains of sand and usually .1,(%"):&)(,/".("(/2#".(*$',;(,/&( space junk is leftovers of comets, smashed asteroids and even ejecta from the rocky planets.

The Feb. 15 asteroid event is just one of several amazing events in 2013 that will turn the heads of Joe and Jane America skyward.

Right now, astronomers are closely watching three comets streaking through the Solar System.

By March 6th, you will start to see the faintly glowing tail of Comet PanStarrs as it comes from behind the Sun to put on a show for two weeks in our twilight evenings.

And Southern Hemisphere stargazers are currently watching a greenish comet in their telescopes called Lemon, which will appear in our night skies in late March with maybe the brightness of the stars in the Big Dipper.

Pulled by the tremendous gravity of the Sun that keeps the planets and everything around it in a predictable orbit, comets are thought to be the pristine leftovers of the Solar System’s birth.

Astronomers have recently understood that starting with Pluto, 4 billion miles away, is a section of frozen spheres and rubble called the Kuiper Belt.

The objects, the largest being Pluto, are now called “dwarf planets,” and there are at least a half dozen that rival the former 9th planet in size.

When a NASA spacecraft called New Horizons passes by Pluto on July 14, 2015, it will continue through the Kuiper Belt. This valuable data will mold a new

concept of this newly discovered feature of our Solar System.

Another new concept for our family of planets, moons and asteroids is a doughnut‐ like torus called the Oort Cloud.

Ringing the Solar system at radius beginning at 10 billion miles from the Sun, this is the reservoir for billions and billions of comets.

Theorized by Danish

astronomer Jan Oort in 1950, the existence is still inferred as sunlight is so feeble that even the Hubble Telescope can’t pick 12,(!&",2)&'5((0,($'(7&%$&D&-(,/",("( passing star or unknown object near the Oort Cloud disturbs the gravity equilibrium and sends thousands of primordial comets toward the reaching gravity of the Sun. The last naked‐eye visible

comets in the Northern Hemisphere, Comet Hyakutake in 1995 and Comet Hale‐Bopp $.( LMMf;( 4&)&( "%'1( *$)',( ,$#&( visitors from the Oort Cloud to the inner Solar System. Maybe we are entering an era of gravity disturbed comets heading our way as they are drawn to the gravity of the Sun like a magnet.

Only time will tell.

The very bright Procyon is way above Sirius to the left, and it in the small dog, Canis Minor. Look way to the right of Procyon, and there is the red star of Orion’s shoulder‐‐Betelgeuse. Anchored at the bottom by Sirius, a “Winter Triangle” with Procyon and Betelgeuse is formed. Amateur astronomers call ,/&'&(2.1!*$+$"%(',")(C",,&).'(J"',&)$'#'5S((G/&(A$:(V$CC&)($'(".1,/&)("',&)$'#;("'( a part of the larger constellation Ursa Major, the Big Bear.

The crescent Moon spends three days moving 36 degrees across the constellation Pisces before entering Aries on Friday and Saturday, then Taurus on Sunday, Monday and next Tuesday.

First Quarter Moon is today at 3:31 pm, directly south at sunset and half lit on the right side and dark on the left side. That dividing line is called the “terminator.”

Breweries coming to this year’s event include amazing breweries rarely seen in east Tennessee, including Highland Brewing, Moccasin Bend

Brewing, Oscar Blues Brewery, Sweetwater Brewing Company, Calf Killer Brewing Company, Green Man Brewery, Studio Brew, Wolf Hills Brewing Company, Saw Works Brewing Company and Smokey Mountain Brewery.

“This year’s list of breweries is like a meeting of the “who’s who” in brewing in this region. The brewers at our event are leading the way in southern brew styles and quality,” said Stephanie Carson, event organizer.

Les Misérables

G/&( *$)',( #1D$&( #2'$+"%( 0( can remember seeing was “The Sound of Music”, which my mom took me to see, and we waited in a long line outside the theater. The movie made a big impression on ,/&( 312.:( %"-( $.( ,/",( %$.&;( ".-( 0( am to this day a fan of the story of the trials and tribulations of the nun/nanny who frequently

broke into song.

Through the years, 0( /"D&( "%'1( &.B13&-( many additional musicals including “Rent”, “Chicago”, and “Hairspray” just to name a few.

The latest musical 0("--(,1(#3(%$',($'(JP&'( Miserables”, based on the Broadway musical which was adapted from the 1862 novel of the '"#&(."#&5(G/&(*$%#( has been nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and after viewing the *$%#( 0( +".( +&),"$.%3( see why.

G/&( *$%#( !1%%14'( the story of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a convict in France who is released on parole by a prison guard named Javert (Russell Crowe), and taken in by as Bishop. During his stay with the Bishop, Valjean is accused of a theft, and as a result, incurs the wrath of Javert, who promises to bring the convict to justice. While

on the run, Valjean has vowed to help others, and soon does so under a new identity.

G/&( *$%#( ,/&.( B2#C'( &$:/,( 3&")'( "/&"-;( ".-( *$.-'( X"%B&".( running a factory in and being the major of Montreuil‐sur‐Mer, T)".+&5( 0.( X"%B&".I'( !"+,1)3( 4&( meet Fantine (Anne Hathaway), who is soon dismissed from her job after the foreman discovers she has been sending money to an unscrupulous couple who are caring for her illegitimate daughter Cosette. The action of the foreman results in Fantine being forced into the world of prostitution in order to provide money for her daughter. Her new “job” is short‐lived however, as Javert arrests Fantine, but just as she is about to be taken away, Valjean comes to the rescue.

Due to a devastating end for Fantine, Valjean soon comes to take Cosette under his wing to be raised as his daughter.

G/&( *$%#( ":"$.( #1D&'( !1)4")-( in time, with Cosette now a young adult living in a world where the poor are being treated so badly, revolution is in the air. One of the leaders in the coming revolution in student activist Marius (Eddie Redmayne), who becomes the love interest of Cosette, but all is not easy for the star‐crossed couple.

Many are killed in what is know as the June Rebellion of France, but Valjean manages to save the life of Marius. So, as you can imagine, there is much drama ".-( '"-.&''( $.( ,/$'( *$%#;( 72,( there are rays of light as well, all conveyed in 51(!) songs.

K.&( 1!( ,/&( "'C&+,'( 1!( ,/&( *$%#( 0( !12.-( "#"F$.:( $'( ,/&( !"+,( "%%( the vocals were recorded live on set, as apposed to prerecording the vocals and then having the actors lip‐sync, thus the crying 4/$%&('$.:$.:($.(,/$'(*$%#(4"'(D&)3( impressive.

The actors are all wonderful, ".-(4/$%&(0(/"-(/&")-(e"+8#".I'( D1+"%( C)14&''( 7&!1)&;( 0( +12%-( not say the same for Crowe or Hathaway, but the two certainly impressed me with their singing.

Combined with wonderful sets, superb acting and singing, it’s &"'3(,1('&&(4/3(,/&(*$%#(:").&)&-( ",,&.,$1.( !)1#( 1%&( K'+")5( 0!( 312( enjoy musicals, or like myself, &.B13( U2"%$,3( *$%#'( 1!( ".3( :&.)&;( then “Les Miserables” hits the right note. (Rated PG‐13) A

Abraham Lincoln, Celebrity Hunter

This week marks the two hundred and fourth birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the larger‐ than‐life President who has become a true American celebrity and the subject of much recent attention. Already the most studied and written about person in American history, he is now more popular than ever, thanks to two disparate sources— Steven Spielberg’s new movie, based on the bestselling book by Doris Kearns Goodwin, and the intriguing revelation by author Seth Grahame‐Smith that not only was Lincoln our sixteenth President, but was also a highly‐ motivated vampire hunter as well. Given my obsessions with C1C(+2%,2)&;(0(.",2)"%%3(C)&!&)(,/&( vampire image, but as a historian 0( '2CC1'&( 0( '/12%-( ",( %&"',( acknowledge the “seriousness” of the Spielberg‐Goodwin version. All this goes to show that Lincoln can be practically anyone (or anything) you want him to be.

The truth of this observation is documented in a most enjoyable and controversial way by Bradley University professor Jackie Hogan in her delightful book, Lincoln, Inc.: Selling The Sixteenth President In Contemporary America(a=14#".(".-(P$,,%&*$&%-;( ^OLLb5( 0!( 312I)&( %118$.:( !1)( 3&,( another biography of the man !)1#(0%%$.1$';(,/$'($'(.1,(,/&(7118( for you, but if you’re interested in discovering how Lincoln has morphed into an enduring pop culture icon, your search is over.

0.(#".3(4"3'(,/$'($'("(+1#C".$1.( piece to Merrill Peterson’s 1994 study Lincoln in American Memory, but Hogan is a better storyteller than Peterson and is far more interested in Lincoln as a marketable consumer item than is Peterson. As Hogan tells us from the outset, “this is a book about the ways Abraham Lincoln

is packaged and sold in the marketplace of American ideas.”

Also, she is “less interested in proving or disproving the man’s greatness than in understanding why we see Lincoln the way we do.” Of course, the picture of the Abraham Lincoln bobblehead *$:2)$.&(1.(,/&(7118I'(!)1.,(+1D&)( should tip you off that this is no ordinary biography.

Hogan’s book covers a lot of ground in its brief 205 pages (a page, very conveniently, for every year since Honest Abe’s birth), and it analyzes most of the topics 4&( '/12%-( &QC&+,( ,1( *$.-( $.( "( book like this (not that there are many books just like this). Hogan takes a look at a wide range of topics, from Lincoln’s image as a marketing and tourism tool to his portrayal in literature, television, ".-( *$%#5( 9/&( "%'1( &QC%"$.'( /14( Lincoln has become a staple of American political discourse, polite and otherwise; can you, for instance, think of a campaign in which his name wasn’t invoked to make some inane points by both liberals and +1.'&)D",$D&'m( 0.( 1.&( of her more interesting chapters, she takes us on a tour of the countless Lincoln exhibits in museums across the country and wonders why we are so obsessed with cataloging such a vast array of memorabilia, from autographs to locks of hair.

At the heart of Logan’s immensely entertaining books are four principles that are revealed by a study of Lincoln as pop culture icon. Each one demonstrates how Lincoln, and other famous and much‐ $-&"%$F&-( *$:2)&'( !)1#(

American history, holds up a mirror to our national self‐ image. She sets these principles in the context of what social commentator Benedict Anderson calls “imagined communities,” highlighting that we have remade Lincoln in our own image several times since his tragic assassination in 1865. These often competing images form “discourses of national identity,” and can manifest themselves as uplifting political speeches or "'( 7177%&/&"-'( ".-( *$%#'( "712,( vampire hunters. Perhaps the best way we can envision Lincoln is as a shapeshifter rather than as a vampire hunter.

by Logan is that “discourses of national identity are not hard to *$.-5S( e2',( %118( ")12.-( ".-( 312( will see Lincoln’s face staring back at you from the pages of textbooks, from automobile logos, city limit signs, Lincoln Logs containers, and university memorabilia. Lincoln’s name is invoked, no pun intended, at the drop of a hat. Second, “in any given nation, different groups imagine the nation differently, so there are always multiple and competing discourses of national identity, and those discourses change over time in response to social conditions.”

Third, “discourses of national identity often carry implicit, or even explicit, messages about such things as gender, race, ethnicity, class, religion, and sexuality.” Just name your agenda, and Abe will be by your side with a handy platform. And, fourth, “discourses of .",$1."%( $-&.,$,3( )&*%&+,;( reinforce, and occasionally challenge social /$&)")+/$&'5S( 0.( 1,/&)( words, Abraham Lincoln has been and apparently will continue to be the poster child for any cause you wish to name. We can therefore see our stories about Abraham Lincoln as J$-&"%$F&-( )&*%&+,$1.'( 1!( the nation. They tell us who we think we are, and who we want to be.” History,

after all, is rarely a story about “what really happened, but is most often a tale involving wish‐ !2%*$%%#&.,(".-('&%![)&*%&+,$1.5 After reading Hogan’s book, 0( )&"%$F&-( ,/",( ,/&( #".( 4/1( presided over a divided nation when he was alive has now, in death, become a unifying force.

Although we can disagree, often violently, about what image of Lincoln we want to adopt, we can at least agree about our need to see ourselves in that craggy and bearded face. We turn to Lincoln for advice, which is nearly always taken radically out of context, and we transform him into a vehicle for entertainment. We can sip our Starbucks and debate who makes the most convincing Lincoln—Gregory Peck or Daniel Day‐Lewis?—or which director captured the real man—D.W. W)$!*$,/( 1)( 9,&D&.( 9C$&%7&):m(( “What Would Lincoln Do?” has become our mantra and our +1#!1),5(0.(!"+,;(#&(#$:/,(7&('"!&( in saying that Lincoln was our *$)',(.",$1."%(+&%&7)$,3k"%,/12:/( we would be hard‐pressed to ignore the star power generated earlier by George Washington, ,/&(#".(0(%$8&(,1(+"%%(,/&(JE%D$'(K!( The Eighteenth Century.”

0( 4$%%( %&"D&( 312( ,1( commemorate Lincoln’s birthday in your own personal way, but, regardless of what that might be, 0(/1C&(312(4$%%(,"8&(e"+8$&(Z1:".( along as your tour guide.
