Summary of brief for new Farm Education Complex at Dumfries House Masterplan • The location is the recently cleared area towards the south of the Temple Wood • For school visits, the facility will need to be able to accommodate 30 children plus staff. • Pick up and drop off will usually be via 2 minibuses, but allowance should be made for a 50 seater coach [turning radius 10.5m, to outside front corner]. • Access could be via farm to the south or track to the east. • During holidays the facility will be open to the public, at busy periods up to 100 people could be using the facility. • Animals will be looked after by farm staff. • There is to be a central building with associated animal enclosures around the site (see below). There will need to be services (electric, water) and toilet facilities. • Disabled access and parking will need to be considered. • This is more than a ‘petting farm’, it is very much an educational facility first and foremost.

Buildings • The focal point and main structure will be the information and orientation building at the centre of the site [approx 60m2 + storage]. • Here, groups will be taught about farming and where animal products (meat, wool, dairy, eggs etc) come from. They will then go out and see the various animals. • The design can be any shape/size but needs to hold 35 people and enable teaching sessions to take place. • Each animal type will have its own enclosure with housing. Each area would have at least 2 animals at any one time. • Animal types: -
