Welcome to SLATE, The London Film School’s celebration of the creative endeavours of our emerging filmmakers from across the world.

Congratulations to all of our graduates and their successes. We preview here the narrative and documentary shorts that are the results of an intense cinematic journey. Congratulations also to our very first graduates from our MA program in International Film Business. Your journey has taken you into the worlds of film finance, global co-productions and the challenges and opportunities offered by new platforms. The approach we take here is based on learning through practice. In the Filmmaking course, this means learning all aspects of the filmmaking process, which ultimately endows students with a deeper understanding of what it takes to execute a vision.

03 Welcome 04 A Message from our Chairman

For our screenwriters, their journey is about developing their story worlds, taking us on imaginative journeys. They leave having written a full length feature script, and ready to take on the challenges of making those stories come alive on screen.

06 MA Filmmaking 24 MA Screenwriting 34 MA International Film Business

In this fast changing creative media landscape there are other challenges. Our graduates need to be prepared for the industries they will work in, understanding diverse business models, distribution, technological and exhibition issues from the perspective of both producer and viewer.

That said, we are not about to abandon celluloid for digital, rather we want to have that conversation about how to use these varied channels to tell the most original and creative stories in ways that connect with local and global audiences. It’s about putting LFS into the centre of screen culture, and giving our graduates the best first step they can take.

A Message from our Chairman \ /

\ /

Here we are again - another successful year at The London Film School! Of course it was disappointing that our longcherished plan to move to the Barbican in 2017 was abandoned, but this was a wise and necessary course of action, and we now look forward to an even better and more suitable new home, the quest for which is very much under way. But as we approach our 60th Birthday, there is much to celebrate. Once again we featured in the Hollywood Reporter’s Top 15 International Film Schools, and our graduates have had a strong presence in film festivals worldwide. We had a record-breaking six films in the Palm Springs Short Film Festival, and a short and five full-length features in the London Film Festival. LFS graduate Simon Mesa Soto’s film ‘Leidi’ followed its Palme d’Or success last year with winning the CILECT (International Film Schools Association) Fiction Film Award, whilst graduates Petros Silvestros and Nikos Andritsakis made history at the Berlinale. Having won the Crystal Bear last year with their film ‘Mike’ (the first UK film to do so), they won again this year with ‘Confession’. This is the first time in the Berlinale’s history that a director has won in two successive years. Many congratulations to them all.

Welcome

On the academic front, this year saw the signing of our agreement with the University of Warwick. From January 2016 they will become our validating body. Warwick has an impressive Film Studies department, and we look forward to developing a number of collaborative project with them in the near future. We also launched a new MA degree this year. The MA International Film Business is run jointly with the University of Exeter. Our thirty students spent one term in Exeter, joining us here at LFS for the rest of the year, to be taught by a range of industry professionals. They also had the opportunity to participate in the Film Market at the Berlinale. This first intake graduate today alongside our filmmakers and screenwriters. This year we said goodbye to one of our longestserving lecturers. Howard Thompson, Head of Sound, made an enormous contribution to LFS over many decades, and has now retired. We thank him, wish him well, and send him our love. As always, I want to thank our talented filmmakers, and the LFS staff for their wonderful patience and commitment. Thanks too to all who have contributed to helping creativity and talent to blossom - visiting lecturers, volunteers, actors, industry sponsors, parents, friends and my hard-working Governors. A merry Christmas to you all, a jolly, prosperous new year, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LFS!!!

Benjamin Bee

I was born and raised in Santiago do Cacém, a quiet town in the south of Portugal. I moved to London to study at The London Film School, after obtaining a BA in Graphic Design and musical education. My interest in films started to grow when I was exposed to Meshes of the Afternoon, by Maya Deren.

Aboozar Amini (1985, Afghanistan) moved to the Netherlands as a teen. In 2010, he graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. His debut film KabulTehranKabul (2010) won a Documentary Wildcard from the Nederlands Filmfonds.

Arielle Apfel is a director, producer and editor whose work is comprised of surreal quirky comedies and avant-garde thrillers, stories which aim to capture the quandaries of her generation infused with humour and grit.

Mathias Askeland was born in Oslo, Norway, and finished a BA in Digital Media Production in 2011 before he enrolled at The London Film School in 2012.

Benjamin has won awards for both his directing and writing. His short film, Girl Power, starring Jason Flemyng, Alice Lowe and Dakota Blue Richards, won Best Comedy at Aesthetica Short Film Festival 2014. His first year LFS short, Step Right Up, played at over 35 film festivals and was long-listed for the BAFTA Short Film Award 2014. His first film, A Plastic Toy Dinosaur, won numerous awards and was screened on the BBC. This led Benjamin to be nominated for the BBC New Filmmaker of the Year Award.

Laurence was born and raised in Dartford, Kent and came into the realm of filmmaking through the irrelevancies of door-to-door milk selling, a philosophy degree and a statistical analysis position with a large cheese conglomerate. He has recently completed a Master’s Degree at The London Film School graduating as Director/Producer with a special interest in dark comedy.

Aephie is a Taiwanese filmmaker based in London. After studying architecture and fashion, she has been practicing her concepts and themes across spatial design, costume design, radio and visual artworks in Europe, USA, Japan and Taiwan. In 2012 she took a break from her work to study MA Filmmaking at the London Film School where she started writing and directing. She also works as a Production Designer.

Barbara is a German-born Assyrian. She was a BFA Motion Pictures & Television student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her passion led her to London to complete her studies as a graduate student, and receive an MA in Filmmaking at The London Film School. Growing up in Pfullendorf, a small town in Southern Germany, she developed an intense interest in films, particularly in the works of film director Martin Scorsese, and film editor Mark Goldblatt, who have been her biggest inspiration. Mark mentored Barbara throughout the making of her graduation film.

Born and raised in the Basque country, Spain, Leire studied Law and Political Sciences in Madrid, earning both BAs in 2012. She undertook a brief internship as a lawyer, before moving to London to pursue the MA in Filmmaking at The London Film School.

Mary Hasavari

Sohrab Kavir

Stephen Kenny

Wilhelm Kuhn

Mary Nunpau Hasavari graduated with a short film Before Spring in 2015, which has already been shown at several film festivals and got Honourable mentioning at The Isle of Wight International Film Festival.

Sohrab Kavir was born in Mashhad, Iran in 1979, in the year of the Revolution. He was brought up in a religious and crowded family during the Iraqi war. Sohrab who had dyslexia found his schooling years very stressful, especially due to the fact that this learning difficulty isn’t recognised in Iran. However, it was the gradual deaths of three of his brothers to Duchenne (DMD) that affected him the most. In 1999, after watching Elia Kazan’s East of Eden (1955), he decided to become a filmmaker to make a film about the disease that killed his brothers and left the rest of his family devastated.

Steve got his first introduction to filmmaking while at Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated with a BA in Film Studies and Italian in 2009. After university, he spent a year in Canada where he gained valuable experience working as a runner on several feature films.

Wilhelm was born and raised in Paris. He took cinema classes for 3 years in high school as a minor before studying Political Science in both France (Sciences Po) and the UK (University of Kent). His academic undergraduate courses taught him the equal importance of what to make movies about, and how to make them. The latter would be addressed during his time at The London Film School where he focused on acquiring technical knowledge, serving as a cinematographer/ camera operator on many projects.

Mary has also worked on many international production spanning Norway, Thailand, Japand, USA and France. These includes action features starring icons such as Steven Seagal to more art-house documentaries such as The Guitar King. She is currently working on her first feature project Saffron Robes (temp. title) a documentary following female monks in Thailand. \ /

Working on over 80 projects, she has gathered experience working on music videos, short films, documentaries, corporate videos, etc. and developed an instinctive understanding of the mechanisms that make a production fluid and efficient. Besides her inclination towards visual storytelling that motivates her approach to composition, lighting and camera movement to naturally enhance the script in unison with the director’s vision. Anais also enjoys collaborating; she works well with crew and welcomes pressured challenges. She is a good communicator and problem-solver, with a creative mind.

Shahrukh Naveed

Alexandra Migacheva was born in Nakhodka, a small port city in the far east of Russia in 1989. Having a background in Film Studies and Art History she was accepted onto the MA Filmmaking programme at The London Film School, where her main interests were cinematography and directing for film.

My name is Shahrukh Naveed, from Lahore, Pakistan. Up until I completed my intermediate program in pre-engineering, I was unsure about my future. My friendship with films and camera in particular came suddenly, that I am particularly sensitive to my surroundings, I wanted to present my view to the world. This was when I enrolled at the Theatre, Film and TV department at the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. Since media is a good tool to address a global audience. Those four years shaped my goals towards becoming a successful filmmaker. To polish that ambition further, I decided to undertake the MA Filmmaking programme at The London Film School.

After graduating with an MA from Queen Mary University in English Literature and Politics and completing a short course at the New York Film Academy, I started The Filmmaking MA at the London Film School in 2012. After finishing my graduation film Summer Leaves, I worked as a freelance writer and production assistant for the production company CG LUX. Currently, I am in pre-production of my next short film due to be shot this winter, while writing my first feature film. As a director I predominantly wish to create social realist films, forever pushing boundaries showing real lives and real people by creating socially challenging stories.

Ricardo Saraiva

Soon after returning from the UK having studied Finance, I realised that my future did not lie in any financial institution but in cinema. I wrote, directed and produced short films in the following years whilst working as an assistant writer in a corporate film studio in New Delhi.

Born in Siberia, Russia in 1987. Studied International Journalism and Spanish Culture in Moscow. Worked in writing and editing in Moscow and in cultural sponsorship in Barcelona within the Santander scholarship programme. She also studied access to acting in Vakhtangov Drama School.

Ricardo started at The London Film School after a degree in Social Communications in São Paulo, Brazil, where he worked as a copywriter. At LFS he specialised in directing and editing, having collaborated on several projects and graduating with the short film Salut Maman.

Director

Director

After having made three short films, I went to The London Film School in September 2012 to study on the MA Filmmaking programme. Over the past three years I have focussed on film writing and directing comprehensively as well as film editing and producing. I have learnt that a lot of making films revolves around collaboration. I feel more confident in my process and work ethic and hope to use what I have learnt to go on and make films in India. \ /

Tian Tsering Wang

Zeena Zakaria

I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. I earned a BA in Archaeology and delved into acting, only to discover that filmmaking was my call. This led me to The London Film School, where I earned an MA with an emphasis on direction and production.

Tian enrolled onto the MA Filmmaking at The London Film School in 2012 after travelling for two years across the remote regions of the Himalayas where he tried to tell stories through his camera.

Zeena is currently securing funding for her first feature film, a horror set in the Scottish Highlands due to commence shooting towards the end of 2016. Additionally, she is completing a documentary about the on-going refugee crisis in Europe and has started production on a short Arabic language film.

Lebanese writer Elie Choufany has also been commissioned to write an animated feature and is working closely with Alex Sokolov in Los Angeles while show running two television series for Cinemoz and contracted by London based gaming company YouGoFar to develop a video game for release next year. He is working with French writer Alexis Nolent on adapting his MAS feature project from 2013 as a graphic novel.

The Masters in Screenwriting (MAS) at The London Film School is an intensive one year programme with the focus on developing the writer’s voice in the context of a world class film school where we make over 160 films each year.

The MAS programme continues to flourish with graduates gaining five feature credits this year and working across the film, television and media value chain in development, production, publication and education – writing for theatre, television, animation, web series, graphic novels as well as comedy, shorts and features. This is a course of rigorous study where students practice and learn transferable skills of analysis, collaboration and storytelling. As we know it takes time, tenacity and talent to develop a career as a screenwriter. This is the eleventh year of the MAS programme at The London Film School and many graduates are now working professionally across the industry in development, production and on their own projects in companies as diverse as Tiger Aspect, Sky, BBC Digital, Kudos, Lionsgate and the Bureau. Currently for example MAS grad Phoenix Vu is in Bangkok for the premiere of teen romance Zodiac Lovers which he wrote and directed, while Hrafnkell Stefansson’s latest film Brave Men’s Blood had its premiere earlier in the year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. UK writer James Ruzicka wrote the screenplay for MAF graduate’s Anu Menon’s recent feature shot in India titled Waiting. He has also been commissioned by UK producer Matt Lacey to write a low-budget horror. Robert Macmillan has been picked up by US agent Jason Whittle while developing Stutter with Berlin based producer Beth Sanders from Crowfoot Films – with aims to shoot in summer 2016. Rebecca Hobbs’s children’s animation film has recently been green lit by Disney.

MA Screenwriting

UK writers have also been doing well this year with Chris Andrews awarded Creative England Development Funding for his British Western Scuttler and his collaboration with Film London producer Tessa Inkelaar on the rural thriller Shepherd. He is now represented by Jack Thomas at Independent Talent. Adam Dewar one of our first grads is also with ITA while recent grad Jada Nation was snapped up immediately by Casarotto Ramsey. Theo Krekis who also finished last year came second in the PAGE awards with Breathe the short script he wrote on the MAS programme and funded by Film London. He has now found a producer for his LFS feature SIFT with MAS script tutor Roger Hyams attached to the development team. Kefi Chadwick has been writing for BBC Scotland this year, and is now developing her first feature Southern Pacific with Ignition Films. Her play Any Means Necessary opens at the Nottingham Playhouse on Feb 2016. Laurie Doran who was selected for the Edinburgh Film Festival Talent Lab collaborated with LFS MAF graduate on the micro-budget Tongues shot in Chicago this summer and now in post. Samuel Jefferson was one of three writers selected to attend the BAFTA Rocliffe New Comedy Showcase which took place at the New York Film Festival last month. A jury of comedy professionals from the UK and US helped select the winning entrants, including executives from leading independent production companies and major broadcasters. Finally Ben Cleary an Irish writer/ director who came on the course “to learn as much about storytelling before beginning to direct” has just won the Best Foreign Film at the LA Shorts Festival for his short Stutterer and has RTE funding for his first feature. So another busy year for our screenwriting grads - today however we are highlighting the work of the 2015 graduating year with story worlds ranging from the forests of Malaysia to the backstreets of Hong Kong and Bogata, from the court of Henry VIII to classical Athens. There’s a political , thriller, a cult horror set in the swamps of Louisiana, revenge and fantasy, sci-fi and romance, all shaped around classic themes of love and betrayal, sexual and social politics, coming of age and self-discovery. We hope you will join with us in celebrating the hard work, intelligence and talent of the graduating class of 2015 as they prepare for the next step in their screenwriting and filmmaking journey. Born and raised in Paris, Lily moved to England at the age of seventeen to study English Literature at King’s College London. After a couple of years’ experience working in contemporary art galleries and assisting curators, she decided to return to her love of film and writing.

I am an American screenwriter recently returned to the Midwestern U.S., though I would be very happy to relocate. I am developing a slate of projects in several genres. My latest, The University News, is a present-day thriller set on a university campus. Other projects include Matinée, a feature-length comedy involving a group of teachers on a school trip, and Honeypot, a sitcom set inside a coffee shop deep within MI6 headquarters.

She was born and raised in Hong Kong. Graduated with a BA (Hons) in Film and Television in England and further pursue her passion as a screenwriter at The London Film School.

Rena Brown Short Film

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, she moved to the US at a very young age for a few years, becoming fluent in both English and Spanish. Her creative tendencies became obvious when at age eight she began studying piano. Writing became her passion shortly after, and screenwriting became a young adult’s obsession. Coming from a country with political and social difficulties, she could not use any Venezuelan money to fund her studies abroad, so to complete her MA Screenwriting she crowdfunded and held three jobs for one year.

Amy Ley Fiske Amy started in screenwriting when a short story of hers was adapted into a film. After that, she became addicted to seeing her work in live action, and so began voraciously studying visual media and screenplays.

She is inspired by daily life despite being unable to copyright an experience. If you recognise a piece of yourself in her work, know she made just as much money off it as you did. On darker days she wishes she had become something else yet screenwriting is her passion and the only thing Amy feels she is good at (besides catching the tube just before the doors shut). Adaptation, horror, and comedy are her specialties. Recently she was granted the rights to adapt a Stephen King short into a film. Theo Krekis

Mariana Gabriela Magallanes Gonzalez

Professional in filmmaking, graduated in 2009 from Politécnico Grancolombiano University. With 5 years’ experience, I started helping in the creation of independent short films and video reports for cultural activities and music concerts.

Mark Harris is an artist, writer and linguist with a passion for storytelling in the visual medium. From an early age an addiction to movies shaped his ambitions, and through a tortuous journey of discovery across the world and a deep commitment to his artistic development he has reached a point where he is able to use his talents to the very best of his ability.

Growing up as the son of a TV-preacher in Norway, with 8 brothers and sisters, Andres had to work hard from an early age to find ways of getting people’s attention. So he started telling stories. In highschool he handed in every school project possible (and not possible) as a film, and later performed as an actor and comic sketch writer for the annual revue, with special mentions in the local newspapers.

She studied film and television at CENTRO Design, Film and Television School, Mexico, and received a master’s degree in screenwriting from The London Film School.

Since graduating from the MA Screenwriting at The London Film School, Theo’s short film Breathe, which explores LGBT issues in the travelling community. The film was funded by Film London and the BFI and chosen from 640 other applications.

Mariana left Mexico at the age of seventeen to become a neo-gypsy and travel the world in search of stories and adventures. She has lived in France, Canada, New York and London since then.

I have three years’ experience working in advertising as an Executive Producer. Currently I am working as AD on advertising projects and working on personal, focusing on artistic and meaningful stories. \ /

In 2013 she received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Filmmaking from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and her obsession with storytelling brought her to London to study MA Screenwriting (2014-2015). Her mission is to tell stories to share what makes us human, and to spread love; making films is just the beginning.

His feature screenplay, Sift, is a social realist drama and currently in development, along with an adaptation of Kevin Barry’s The Girls and the Dogs. Selma Messai

Jada Nation

Christopher Nightingale

Marissa Ogbeide

Jessica Romagnoli

Daniel Sander

Born in Algeria, I grew up in France where I graduated from Medical School. I worked as a doctor in the emergency department for seven years and then for the Ministry of Health for three years. Before applying to the LFS Screenwriting MA programme, I wrote and directed an award winning short film and wrote a couple of short films for other directors.

Prior to attending the LFS MA Screenwriting course, Jada Nation completed her bachelors in film studies from the renowned Barnard College of Columbia University in the city of New York. Whilst there, she worked on numerous short films as a writer/director as well as a freelance videographer and editor.

I began my film training in Los Angeles where I completed my associates and bachelor’s degree in film production before returning to London to specialise in screenwriting at LFS. Throughout my education, I have had the pleasure of learning and collaborating with the greatest minds on both sides of the Atlantic. I recently set up a small production company Nightingale Film and have been working on producing video content for commercial business companies, short films and music videos, whilst continuing to develop the screenplays and supplement my writing. Recently my screenplay, The Bird and the Beasties, was selected for the TMFF Short screenplay collection.

After gaining a bachelor’s degree in architecture, Marissa decided to pursue her love of film and TV, working in the art department on music video shoots and interning as an agent’s assistant at Casarotto Ramsay and Associates.

Born in Bologna in 1992, I developed my passion for storytelling through my years in high school and at University of Alma Mater, where I graduated with the highest grades in Liberal Arts and Humanities in July, 2014.

Daniel is a Berlin-based screenwriter and journalist who likes to write lighthearted comedies, absurdist dramas, dark horrorstories or a combination of all three. He seriously dislikes writing short biographies.

Working in such creative environments fuelled her desire to create her own stories and develop her screenwriting skills, which she did so on the MA Screenwriting course at The London Film School. She is currently working on a sci-fi - drama feature film script and co-writing a comedy-drama TV series with fellow LFS screenwriting graduate, Amy Fiske.

I was the author of a French parody of the Divine Comedy performed on stage by my classmates in 2008 in Marseilles, of some short ghost stories, and of a fantasy novel I’ve been writing for seven years and (hopefully) planning to finish soon.

After making a decision to leave full time medicine, my ambition is to write the best scripts I can. \ /

She is finalising her feature film screenplay Iris and Gabriele, a moral thriller about two teenagers growing up in 1960’s Cold War East Berlin. The story is inspired by her time living in this historically fraught city, where she worked for a year for a pop-up cinema company Berlin Film Society. She has had consistent work researching story ideas for the film director Pawel Pawlikoski and has worked as a reader for Heyday films and Cascade Media Development. She script - edited numerous student films whilst at The London Film School and currently works as a script editor for the TV drama production company Mammoth Screen.

She interested in most genres and open to new ideas of this Zeitgeist (but perhaps not people who use words like Zeitgeist). At present, she is working on a gothic short about a woman obsessed with her own uncanny doom, entitled “Siren”, and a science fiction feature set in the jungles of South East Asia. Nuri continues to enjoy writing about faeries and witches and women with beards, whilst editing scripts that only sometimes involve any one of those things. \ /

LFS Workshops LFS workshops is The London Film School short course programme, a year-round schedule of targeted training modules ranging from introductory level to professional career development. In partnership with Creative Skillset’s TV Skills Fund and High-End Television Fund, LFS has developed a set of workshops for professional TV drama writers. Showrunning: An Introduction to Producing for Writers and The BAME TV Writer’s Boot Camp are aimed at writers who have already achieved a couple of network TV drama credits, and now want to concentrate on developing their own original series. John Whiston, ITV’s Creative Director of Serial Drama says: ‘The short courses currently being offered by The London Film School are hot property... They fill a really important training gap, targeting already skilled filmmakers moving on and up.’ Led by Bryan Elsley, creator of Skins and chair of the High-End TV Council, and producer Martyn Auty, Showrunning: An Introduction to Producing for Writers guided 20 writers through the process of production, from the first schedule to final delivery. From Line Producer Sue Calverley (Ashes to Ashes, Titanic) to Post-Production Supervisor Gisela Everts (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), the process was explained by those who do it: Production Designer Jason Carlin (New Tricks), Casting Director Matt Weston (The Missing), Director Jonas Grimas (Wallander), First Assistant Director Terry Bamber (World War Z), Director of Photography Dominic Clemence (Silent Witness), Colourist Max Horton (Gravity) and Sound Mixer Stave Haynes (Atonement). “I met some great people on Showrunning both among the other writers who attended and the industry professionals who led the sessions. I learned a lot about the industry and production process. I gained a real insight into how near and far I am from my personal goals. It was really worthwhile and enjoyable experience.” – Participant Led by Carol Russell, and presented in partnership with Fresh Voices, The BAME TV Writer’s Boot Camp involved six writers who had already devised their own idea for an original high-end returnable drama series. In two weeks’ time each writer had finished a first draft of their pilot script, and had begun to work on developing the subsequent story ideas for their series. Through a series of presentations to industry producers, production executives and broadcasters, the series ideas were tested and honed. At the end of the event each writer pitched their project to executives, and finished at a networking party, where they were introduced to more producers and broadcasters. Two of the six writers now have their projects in further development, one with BBC Drama and the other with a major independent producer. A third writer has been invited to join the Coronation Street writers group. Industry figures who took part in the BAME TV Writer’s Boot Camp include Fandy Baker (Clerkenwell Films); Adam Leatherland (EastEnders); Celine Coulson (Film4), Beth Aynsley and Polly Leys (Hillbilly Films) Francis Hopkinson (ITV Studios), Frances Flannery (Wall to Wall), Caroline Skinner (BBC Drama), Cameron Roach (BSkyB) Lisa Walters (Channel 4), Patrick Spence (Fifty Fathoms), Sophie Gardiner (Red Planet), Kirstie MacDonald (World Productions), Esther Springer (BBC Drama) Tom Hutchinson (Mammoth Screen), Caroline Hollick (Red Productions) and Surian Fletcher-Jones (Channel 4 Drama). Short Courses

The next edition of The BAME TV Writer’s Boot Camp will run from 1st February 2016. The next edition of An Introduction to Producing for Writers will run in May 2016. In addition, the Creative Skillset TV Skills Fund will support a new edition of Sharon Doyle’s Inside the Writers’ Room. This 2-day workshop is a crash course in writing as part of an American Writers’ Room. In June, 10 participants split into teams, and showrunners were appointed as the groups brainstormed, developed, pitched, beat out, wrote and rewrote the first act of the first episode of the Knick Season Two. In April, Sharon will run a new edition, with a new series for subject-matter. LFS Workshops will continue to run its popular TV courses for writers (Neil Arksey’s Creating & Writing Continuing TV Drama Series, for writers new to TV drama; Ellis Freeman’s Writers’ Gym, and Tim Fywell’s The Director-Writer Collaboration. Tim, director of the acclaimed Happy Valley and River, will also run his Director-Actor Collaboration workshop. Summer Schools

Welcome to Filmmaking

Jonas and Udayan also run their extended filmmaking summer schools. Jonas’ First Film Summer School will run from 21st August to 3rd September. Of this year’s first edition, participant Riccardo Uccioli says: ‘the ultimate filmmaking experience for beginners. It’s a great chance to be a real director for two weeks, to meet and learn from professionals, to improve your creative knowledge and skills and to make amazing international friends. It is something you’re going to miss so much after you go home.’ Udayan’s more advanced Directing Summer School runs from 31st July to 20th August. 2016 will be the fifth edition of Udayan’s famed filmmaking workshop. Previous participant Andres Dussan says: “Udayan’s advice was profound and very practical. The ‘working with actors’ section was incredibly useful as I had never directed before, not even a short film. I really enjoyed the hands on approach of the course, not to mention the feedback on all the assignments and the seasoned advice from the multiple guest tutors. The LFS Summer School gave me the tools and the self confidence to shoot my first feature comedy film, Down Dog. It was selected for the Raindance Film Festival and is screening at UK cinemas from 13th February 2015. I’m also working on a new TV series with Mondo, another participant from 2012.”

This year, Zillah Bowes will run her first Documentary Summer School from 11th – 24th June. It will be an extended version of Zillah’s Practical Guide to Self-Shooting Documentary, of which filmmaker Rosie Morris said: “This workshop has enabled me to have the confidence to practice with my camera, to go out and try things. I am now working on my own project that I have been self-shooting and am now editing. Before the workshop I was afraid of using my camera. I didn’t know how or where to start with it and didn’t have the confidence to get out there, but after the exercises and Zillah’s advice and encouragement, I have. Her technical knowledge, advice and skills were all fantastic, but I also really learnt a lot from her creative advice and experience, and often think of what she said. Like, ‘if you are present in the world with your camera then things will unfold in front of you’. I have definitely found this to be true. She is not just a practical and technicallyable teacher (although she is that), but she understands a creative process and above all is very open - to her subjects but also to the interests and enthusiasms of her students. Zillah is not judgmental, but is encouraging/empowering, She’s sensitive to people and her environment, which I guess is what makes her a great filmmaker and teacher. I will hopefully do another of her courses in the future.” Further details of Zillah’s Documentary Summer School, and all LFS Workshops, can be found at lfs.org.uk Archie Tait Head of Workshops
