RIVERBANK ROUND-UP

Athletics before COVID-19 seem like a distant memory. Spring sports were getting into a groove and important region matches lay ahead when the GHSA recommended that all member schools suspend team activities on March 12. Despite the abrupt finish, Lovett’s 2020 spring sports season still includes many fond memories and moments.

After a rain-filled start to the spring season, 11 of 12 varsity teams were able to compete. The boys’ golf team placed third in a crowded field at the Larry Nelson Invitational, while the girls’ team secured a win over Westminster at the Dogwood Country Club.

Lovett baseball started fast and hot with a four-game win streak and squeezed in a trip to Jacksonville for a two-game melee over spring break. Both boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams anticipated extended postseason runs this year. The boys’ team went 4-3 on the season, highlighted by a 16-3 win over St. Pius X. The girls’ finished with an impressive 4-1 record, their only defeat by 1-point in an overtime thriller to 6A powerhouse McIntosh High School.

Boys’ soccer entertained fans with thrilling wins over Marist and Northwest Whitfield. Their veteran leadership was apparent both on and o the field, in a season cut short by lightning delays and coronavirus. The girls’ soccer team met the same fate, as weather and the pandemic canceled eight of their fourteen scheduled games. However, the girls made the most of their limited playing time and ended the season with a 4-2 record.

Perhaps the sport most a ected by the gloomy spring weather was tennis. Both boys’ and girls’ teams had seven of 12 matches canceled before the pandemic ended their season. With the talent and skill of these teams, it’s a shame we couldn’t see them in postseason action. The boys ended the season with two shutouts and a 4-1 record, while the girls finished at 2-2.

Track & Field competed just once before spring break, but what Coach Mayer saw from his athletes that afternoon at Westminster gave him great hope for this season and beyond. The team managed to produce excellent results, including a first-place finish by the boys’ 4x100 meter relay.
