From the Headmaster In our 13 years at Lovett, Penny and I have had the pleasure and privilege of attending many arts performances at Lovett. We could not be more impressed with this school’s great tradition in the arts and the fact that the arts hold a central place in our educational mission and in the life of our community. Under the outstanding leadership of our director of the Fine Arts Department, Jay Freer, the arts continue to thrive and grow at Lovett. And, our Friends of the Arts give Jay and his colleagues and their students enormous support and encouragement. Our facilities, programs, and accomplishments in the arts would not be possible without the support and generosity of the Friends of the Arts and people throughout the Lovett and Atlanta community. We sincerely appreciate what our supporters make possible for our community and students in this essential area of school life. We thank you for attending our performances and for your ongoing devotion to the arts at Lovett. The spirit and soul of our school are all the deeper and richer because of the arts!

William S. Peebles IV, Headmaster

From the Fine Arts Director

The fine arts program is a crucial part of Lovett’s

philosophy of educating “the whole child.” If your child is not actively participating in sustained study of an art form throughout their educational career, they are missing the key to invaluable emotional and intellectual development. Scientific studies have proven the arts promote critical thinking skills, self-expression, self-confidence, discipline, and understanding of group dynamics. Students also attain higher SAT scores and gain an unparalleled edge entering college–see page 81. Mrs. Lovett understood the importance of the arts in education, and I urge you to carefully examine our Fine Arts curriculum with your child and encourage their commitment and sustained study. Taught by professional artists, Lovett students are afforded exceptional opportunities and resources in visual and performing arts—band, chorus, dance, drama, film, orchestra, technical theater, and applied lessons in piano, voice, and band and orchestral instruments. The Friends of the Arts volunteer parent organization (headed by Anne Marino), our Headmaster Billy Peebles, our dedicated trustees, and our parents and students all combine to make Lovett a very special school. How can you help? Join Friends of the Arts today (http://bit.ly/2aBHjRg) and help support the vital component that allows the arts to grow and flourish at Lovett. Membership information is available online at www.lovett.org/fota. Thank you for supporting the arts at Lovett by attending this performance.

Jay Freer, Director of Fine Arts Jay Freer, a 1978 Lovett graduate, received a bachelor of fine arts degree in acting from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts and was a Kenan Scholarship winner. He has taught and directed more than 79 plays and musicals at Lovett over the last 30 years. He won the Woodward Award for Excellence in teaching in 1992, the Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006, and accepted the position of director of Fine Arts in 2007. Professionally, Jay has directed at The Alliance Theatre, Aurora Theatre, Theatrical Outfit, and Theatre in the Square, and was also the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Actors Theatre of Atlanta (ATA)—an all-equity professional theatre company that operated from 2000–2006. Among the shows he directed for ATA are The Good Doctor, Collected Stories (Abie Award nominated in 2001), Underneath the Lintel (Southeastern premiere and chosen as the number one play of 2003 by the AJC & Creative Loafing), Talley’s Folly, and Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. Jay has also taught acting at The North Carolina School of the Arts and The South Carolina Governors School for the Arts, as well as numerous professional classes. He studied in New York with Uta Hagen, considered “one of the greatest actresses and acting teachers of the 20th Century” and continues to study acting with her protégé Ted Brunetti. Together Jay and Ted have founded Ted Brunetti Studios-South, a training resource for professional actors located here in Atlanta. In 2008, The Charles Loridans Foundation recognized Jay for excellence and leadership in theater education. 6 • Lovett

From the Friends of the Arts President Welcome, as we begin another season filled with anticipation of the year ahead. Our talented students will grace our stages and captivate audiences with their enchanting performances in music, dance and theater, as well as visual arts presentations. Director of Fine Arts Jay Freer and his faculty produce more than 40 performances, events, Anne Marino and concerts each year. At least 10 gallery displays are held on campus and local venues throughout the year. Members of Lovett’s Fine Arts faculty are working professionals who subscribe wholeheartedly to the vision of our school’s founder, Eva Edwards Lovett, who stressed the importance of developing the whole child—academically, athletically, socially, spiritually, and artistically. From the earliest grades, our students are exposed to and participate in a wide range of artistic offerings. By the time they graduate they will have developed a keen appreciation of the arts, perhaps even discovered a passion to pursue the arts as a profession. Friends of the Arts (FOTA) is the volunteer parent organization whose mission is to support the students and faculty of Lovett’s Fine Arts department. Every year, hundreds of families and individuals become members of FOTA, volunteer in the arts classrooms, serve on various committees, and attend performances, concerts, and gallery shows. In addition to creative support, FOTA raises thousands of dollars each year through its membership, events, and programs. Your membership donation allows you to partner with FOTA to advance and enhance the arts offerings at Lovett. We invite you to become a member of FOTA. Please visit the Fine Arts page of the Lovett website (www.lovett.org/fota) for more information. Thank you for supporting the Fine Arts Program at Lovett. Enjoy the show!

Choral Music at Lovett

The choral program at The Lovett School has a rich and distinguished history, dating to the founding of the institution. The school’s philosophy of utilizing a comprehensive curriculum that seeks to develop the total child-intellectually, physically, spiritually, socially, aesthetically, and emotionally, is exemplified through emphasis on the visual and performing arts. During the course of any academic year, more than 90 percent of Lovett students participate in the arts. Choral/vocal music at Lovett has enjoyed outstanding leadership over several decades. Lovett choral ensembles are represented annually in the Spivey Hall Honor Choirs, the GMEA District Five Honor Chorus, and the GMEA All-State Choruses. In 2013, the Lovett choral groups received the coveted Spirit of Orlando Award from the Heritage Music Festival. This award is given to the school that demonstrates support and encouragement of one another and other groups in the festival, and best exemplifies a positive model for music education.

In 2014, the Lovett Singers traveled to New York City, where they performed the National Anthem for a sold-out Brooklyn Nets/Boston Celtics game, and performed the Haydn St. Nicholas Mass in Carnegie Hall under the direction of Anton Armstrong. In 2016, the Lovett Singers returned to Carnegie Hall and performed in the National Festival Chorus under the baton of Keith Hampton. They also performed the National Anthem to a soldout audience at Madison Square Garden. Lower School General Music

The goal of the Lower School General Music program is to build a strong foundation of musical literacy. Through singing, playing instruments, listening, moving and creating, children are exposed to a diverse curriculum designed for active and fun music learning.

Children gain skill in improvising, reading, and composing their own music, and learn to use music vocabulary to describe what they feel, see, and hear. Focused skills, such as singing on pitch, steady beat competency, instrument recognition, and performance and audience etiquette are also taught. Music elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and form are sequenced age appropriately throughout the music curriculum. Children experience a well-rounded repertoire of music representing different genres and cultures.

Jan Boner brings to The Lovett School many years of experience teaching young children through her business, Musik to Grow in the Cobb County community. She is a Board Certified Music Therapist and specializes in working with young children with developmental delays and autism. She is a Past President of the International Early Childhood Music & Movement Association whose mission is to promote best practices in all areas of early childhood music and movement. Jan completed a masters in education through the Lesley University in Curriculum & Instruction: Integrated Teaching Through the Arts. She earned a bachelors of music in music therapy from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and a Bachelors of Theology, with emphasis in Christian leadership training from The Way College of Biblical Research, Emporia Kansas. Jan is certified to teach all Musikgarten curricula, and holds ECMMA Certification Level III and Orff Schulwerk Level II. Jan’s extensive experience and education indicates her passion for the young child and music.

Upper School Dance

The Middle and Upper School Dance Program is taught by Rebecca Metzger Hirsch, and is designed to introduce many styles of dance to the beginning student, but with a focus on ballet as the foundation of all dances. In the seventh and eighth grade dance classes, students are introduced to ballet, hip hop, jazz, and contemporary dance. In the Upper School dance class, students have the opportunity to focus on more detailed aspects of dance, concentrating on the fundamentals of technique (ballet, jazz, and contemporary), proper stretching form, strengthening exercises used in Pilates and Gyrotonics, and the choreographic process. Upper School students also develop their performance ability by performing in the Hendrix-Chenault Theater for a fall and spring dance concert, school assemblies, chapel services, and the Spring Arts Festival. In the Lower School, after-school dance classes are taught by Florence Fitzgerald, where students learn ballet, modern, and jazz movements, and also perform in a fall and spring concert. Rebecca Metzger Hirsch, an Atlanta native, left home at 16 to attend the School of American Ballet on a full merit scholarship. In her senior year of high school, she was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and was one of two dancers to receive the first ever Mae L. Wein Award for students of outstanding promise. At 18, she joined the New York City Ballet, performing a variety of corps, soloist, and principal roles during her career. She has appeared in the PBS series Dance in America and The Balanchine Essays. While rehearsing, performing, and touring full-time, she attended Barnard College, graduating magna cum laude. Following her performing career, Hirsch became the creative director of the New York City Ballet Workout. She has taught ballet to all levels and ages, from the public schools of New York City to elite ballet academies, and recently became a repetiteur for both the Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine Foundations. Rebecca joined Lovett in 2013 and is thrilled to be a part of the Fine Arts Department, a place that clearly understands the value of integrating academics with the arts. Lovett

Kindergarten–Second Grade Dance

Florence Fitzgerald received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to attend the School of American Ballet (SAB) at the age of 12. Soon after, she moved to New York City to continue her dance and academic studies and train daily at SAB. Florence then joined the New York City Ballet in 1979. One of her greatest honors was being chosen personally by Mr. Balanchine, artistic director of the New York City Ballet, to be among the last generation to work directly for him. Under the direction of Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Peter Martins, her professional career spanned 11 years. Other highlights include performing at the White House; touring extensively through Europe, Asia, and the United States; performing in a feature film and performing, “Live from Studio 8-H,” an ABC Special evening. After her move to Atlanta, she had the privilege of being accepted into the Independent Advanced Program with Romana Kryzanowska to receive instructor certification status in the Pilates Method. Florence became certified in 1998 and has been teaching consistently since that time. Her gift as an instructor is the ability to translate verbal instruction into successful physical execution. Watching a student achieve a movement with their body that they never expected to perform is Florence’s greatest satisfaction and reward.

Theater Arts Department The Theater Arts Department is dedicated to teaching an in-depth, multi-layered approach to the study of theater and its collaborative nature. Through acting classes, design and production, and education as audience members, students learn to communicate and expand their imagination, creativity, thoughts, and emotions. In classes and productions, Lovett students discover self-discipline, self-motivation, self-esteem and social interaction. The artistic process in acting and design and production is the core of all the work within the program. Students experience a heightened sense of culture, and an ability to make critical value judgment, through skills in acting and design and production. The Theater Arts Department combines these elements to form a curriculum that allows students to explore and experience the theatrical world, instilling a lifelong love of theater. The Theater Department produces plays both semesters, along with other workshop productions, as well as working with the Choral Program on the Upper School musical. In addition, they take an annual trip to New York City that is highly recommended, but optional.

Susan graduated magna cum laude from Culver-Stockton College with a bachelor of science in arts management. The combined business/arts degree has lead her to a variety of different opportunites, from theatrical stage management to administrative support of corporate presidents, set dressing to bookkeeping, properties design to marketing design. Susan is active in Atlanta’s professional theatre arena as a stage manager and props designer, having worked with Theatre in the Square in Marietta, and with Atlanta Lyric, Synchronicity, Horizon Theatre, and 7 Stages. Her past experience also included work with the Orlando Opera Company, Walt Disney World, Beers Construction, and The Sports Authority. Brian Patterson was born in the Orlando, Fla., area, but moved to the North Georgia mountains as an elementary school student. He grew up in Hiawassee, Ga., and is the youngest of two siblings. After graduation from high school, he attended one year of college at West Georgia College prior to transferring to the University of Georgia to complete his degree. He is the proud father of 16-year-old Haley. Brian comes to Lovett after many years in theater around the Atlanta area, as well as technical director for North Metro Church in Marietta, Ga. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in theatre, he moved to the Atlanta area and began working in the Atlanta theatre scene. While freelancing the majority of time, Brian also worked for 14 years as the production coordinator for Theatre in the Square in Marietta, and then served as director of technical services at his church prior to joining Lovett as technical director. He enjoys showing young minds the joy he’s found in a career in theater. Wesley Forlines graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Lighting Design. After college, he took a project management internship at Electronic Theatre Controls in Wisconsin but returned to Georgia in 2015. Since then, he’s worked with theatres around Atlanta and expanded his design experience to work with graphic design, video editing, and other projects. Originally from Columbus, Ga., Wesley has been involved with Georgia’s State Theatre the Springer Opera House since a young age. There he learned and performed as a part of their Academy program and more recently has designed for and stage managed various children’s theatre productions. Lovett

Upper School Film Studies Lovett Film Studies is comprised of four classes, Lovett’s own mini film school. Students in history of film explore the rich evolution of the popular art form, from Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope to today’s Red cameras and Sony 4K projectors. In Critical Approaches to Film, Lovett Film Studies students learn to better analyze, appreciate, and critically evaluate films, crafting articulate written critiques. For those who wish to learn the craft of movie writing, we offer Screenwriting I and II, in which students learn the structure, format, and technique required to pen a feature film script. Additionally, students in Motion Picture Production are taught the entire production work flow, from pre-production planning through the film shoot itself and into the editing suite for post-production. Finally, students in the Film Studies program at Lovett are offered the opportunity to travel to Park City, Utah, to participate in one of the most important film events of the year, Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival. An award-winning independent filmmaker and graduate of the University of Miami film school, David Silverman teaches five film classes here at Lovett. He also serves as director of The Lovett School High School Film Fest, an international festival held each spring featuring the best work from teen filmmakers worldwide. A successful professional actor, David is a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG/ AFTRA), as well as Actors Equity Association and was named Best Actor by Atlanta’s Creative Loafing magazine in 2006. On the big screen, David has recently worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including appearances opposite Tom Cruise in American Made, Michael Keaton in The Founder, and Harrison Ford in Anchorman 2. David’s recent TV appearances include Tyler Perry’s The Haves and Have Nots (OWN), Halt And Catch Fire (AMC), Being Mary Jane (BET), and Survivor’s Remorse (STARZ). He also plays Kent in seasons 5,6, and 7 of The Walking Dead (AMC). Davis is married to author and filmmaker Kelly Young-Silverman and is the proud father of Evelyn May.

GO LIONS! The Arts in Education Eva Edwards Lovett made the following remarks in a presentation on the “Progressive Education Movement” to the Fulton County Pediatric Association: “. . . schools where progressive education is practiced believe that every child has in himself or herself some power of selfexpression, some ability to create. It may be with paint or clay, or hammer and saw; with music or the dance; with dramatic work or story or poem. Whatever be the medium, it is in the expression of these powers and frequently unsuspected abilities that there lies the chance for the greatest personal satisfaction.” Progressive education knows that there is yet much to learn but it is eager and open-minded and keeps its eyes always on the child. Its ideal is that the child should be, in relation to the school, ‘Like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which bringeth forth his fruit in his season.’ 76 • Lovett

Why the Arts?

An excerpt from Academic Preparation for College, published by the College Board The arts—visual arts, theater, music, and dance—challenge and extend human experience. They provide means of expression that go beyond ordinary speaking and writing. They can express intimate thoughts and feelings. They are a unique record of diverse cultures and how these cultures have developed over time. They provide distinctive ways of understanding human beings and nature. The arts are creative modes by which all people can enrich their lives both by self-expression and response to the expressions of others. Works of art often involve subtle meanings and complex systems of expressions. Fully appreciating such works requires the careful reasoning and sustained study that lead to informed insight. Moreover, just as thorough understanding of science requires laboratory or field work, so fully understanding the arts involves firsthand work in them. Preparation in the arts will be valuable to college entrants whatever their field of study. The actual practice of the arts can engage the imagination, foster flexible ways of thinking, develop disciplined effort, and build self-confidence. Appreciation of the arts is integral to the understanding of other cultures sought in the study of history, foreign language, and social sciences. Preparation in the arts will also enable college students to engage in and profit from advance study, performance, and studio work in the arts. For some, such college level work will lead to careers in the arts. For many others, it will permanently enhance the quality of their lives, whether they continue artistic activity as an avocation or appreciation of the arts as observers and members of audiences. According to the College Entrance Examination Board: Nationally, students enrolled in fine arts courses score from 6 to 11 percent higher than students not enrolled in any fine arts courses.
