Lovett Athletics Fall 2020
Featuring a 50th anniversary tribute to the 1970 state champion Lovett football team on page 44!
Welcome to Lovett, and thank
you for attending this event to show your support of our students and coaches! One of the hallmarks of life at Lovett is the spirited encouragement of our parents, alumni, and friends of the school. It means a great deal to all of our studentathletes and helps us to build and maintain our unique sense of community. At Lovett, we are deeply committed to the development of the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. The formation of good character is at the top of our list of priorities, and nowhere is that more important than on the field and courts where our students compete. With that in mind, please join me in making every effort to strengthen and sustain the good sportsmanship that has marked our athletic endeavors through the years.
On behalf of Lovett’s Athletic
Department, I extend a heartfelt welcome to all students, faculty & staff members, parents, and alumni in attendance at tonight’s event. I’m thrilled to be back on The Riverbank to lead a program with a long and distinguished history of athletic success, and our coaches and athletes have been working hard to ensure that this continues. The support from our community means the world to our student-athletes and is a welldeserved reward for their efforts. Lovett places a strong emphasis on good sportsmanship, and it is our hope that the Lovett community will continue this tradition of gracious behavior towards our opponents, their fans, and the officials.
Thank you again for your support. We all look forward to watching our Lovett Lions in action in the coming year, and we are delighted that you are here for these games!
The Athletics Department would like to extend a special thanks to the LionBackers for their ongoing efforts in support of the Lovett Athletics program.
Go Lions,
Go Lions!

2020 - 2021 LionBackers Presidents Claudia and Carl Stimmel Dear Lovett Fans, The LionBackers welcome you to another exciting year of Lovett athletics. This year brings a unique set of challenges as we work through the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on all aspects of our lives, including athletics. We are all responsible for making smart choices with respect to social distancing and face coverings as we work as a community to give Lovett the best chance at competing this season. Thanks to the talents and commitment of our student-athletes, the dedication and hard work of our coaches and other members of the athletic department, and the support of the administration, parents, and fans, Lovett’s teams will continue to excel. Many thanks to the record number of fans that came out to cheer on our athletes this past year as they participated on 70 teams in grades 7-12. Indeed, there was much to cheer about and the accomplishments were truly impressive. Your support as both a Lovett fan and a member of LionBackers is essential to the success of our athletic programs. Through membership, concession sales, football program, and our two major fundraisers, the annual Golf and Tennis Tournaments, the LionBackers were able to provide substantial support last year to our athletic programs. Because of the abbreviated school year, we were unable to achieve our 2019/2020 goals and need your support more than ever this year to meet our fundraising target. Examples of purchases made last year with funds provided by the LionBackers include: *Major broadcast equipment; allowing us to broadcast most of the varsity sports (2019-20 broadcasts included cheer, football, softball, volleyball, basketball, swim/dive, wrestling, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis) *Painting of softball and baseball facility *Volleyball uniforms *Uniforms for several teams and MS football helmets *Postseason bonuses for fall and winter coaches *Enhanced HUDL program which allows coaches to improve their programs We encourage all members of the Lovett community to become members of the LionBackers for the 2020-2021 school year. Even if your child is too young to participate, your donation and participation strengthens the programs that await your child in the future. When you join, you will receive two family passes to all regular season varsity home sporting events. These passes alone represent a tremendous savings for each family! Lovett has a proud tradition of pursuing excellence in our athletic programs. With help, we can continue that tradition and accomplish our goals of fundraising, promoting school spirit, and supporting all aspects of Lovett athletics. We eagerly look forward to seeing everyone at the fields, gyms, courts, courses, track, and pool! GO LIONS! Claudia and Carl Stimmel LionBackers Presidents, 2020-2021 2 - Fall 2020

50th Anniversary
Excerpt from the 1971 yearbook
15-0 Record
“Hard work leads Lions to State Championship” Size, speed, ability, depth, and quickness are all characteristics of a typical championship team. The Lovett Lions had only a few of these virtues, yet in one department they far surpassed any of the teams they played, and that department was a characteristic known as “heart.”

The Lovett Lions were champions this year, State Champions to be exact, and the road there was no fluke. They began in earnest with a strenuous weight program in 1969. Two separate spring practices and summer camp in Tennessee came and went. Days of summer practice under the intense August heat dragged by like months. Endless after school practices during the season passed until on December 11, 1970, the Lions attained their goal, a 14-6 decision over highly renowned Savannah Country Day which gave them their first Class B State Championship.

The hours were long, the work unending, the biting, scratching, and clawing for the top against tremendous odds never for one second ceased. However, it paid off in the end. Two things will be remembered about the 1970 Lovett team. Number one, they were the greatest team in the history of the school and number two... they will always be remembered for their heart.

Thank you
To our Fall 2020 Athletic Program sponsors,
As we are embarking on another exciting season of Lovett Athletics, we want to take this opportunity to let you know that your support is so very meaningful to our school community. We truly value our sponsors as members of our LionBackers team! Your willingness to participate as a 2020 program sponsor is a major reason why Lovett is able to compete at the highest levels in Georgia interscholastic athletics--thank you! We hope that you will benefit from your 2020 sponsorship as much as our school and our athletes do. The entire Lovett community is appreciative of your support. Thank you, and go Lions!! With appreciation, Leigh Hoke, Marketing Chair leighhoke1@gmail.com
