Middle SCHOOL

Welcome

In the Middle School, each student is seen, encouraged, heard, and provided the opportunities to grow. By combining grace and love with the support of our dedicated faculty, every student will succeed as we develop young people of honor, faith, and wisdom.”

– Joseph Moody, Head of Middle School

Our Mission:

The Lovett School is a community of belonging that develops students of honor, faith, and wisdom with the character and intellect to thrive in learning and life.

Our Approach to Education:

At Lovett, our students find joy and purpose in learning by doing. Guided by our distinctive approach to whole child education, Lovett faculty immerse students in intellectually rigorous, hands-on learning environments that spark character development, individual passions, and social awareness. By design, we offer students the experiences that deepen their cognitive, emotional, and social skills while inspiring an enduring enthusiasm for learning.

Curriculum

Focusing on the whole child approach to teaching and learning, Middle School teachers work collaboratively to design engaging and meaningful classroom experiences that foster a love of learning in our students. As teachers strive to develop the whole child, they focus on creating experiences that not only deepen discipline knowledge but also strengthen character and executive functioning skills. Teachers utilize a variety of teaching strategies to meet students where they are and push them to their highest potential. Differentiated courses are offered in math, language, science (eighth grade only), and English (eighth grade only) to ensure that each student is being appropriately academically challenged.

School students follow a rotating, letter day schedule. Each class period meets for 60 minutes, and every class meets 4 times in a 6-day
rotation. Late starts every Wednesday provide time for faculty meetings and professional development. Afternoon tutorial offers students time to get individualized help, ask questions, make up missed work, or start their homework.

Community Engagement

Civic Leadership Class

The eighth grade Civic Leadership class combines civics curricular goals with community-based learning objectives to better connect academic study and real-world experience. Through hands-on experiences that spark student voice, engagement, and reflection, Civic Leadership students create enduring links between themselves and the community of Atlanta.

Custodial Staff Appreciation Dinner

Each fall, Lovett students from all three divisions come together to celebrate the Lovett custodial staff with a meal, thank-you posters, and games. It’s a great opportunity for students to show their appreciation to the people who make our facility such a great place to learn and work.

Hosting Guatemalan Exchange Students

The Middle School hosts two exchange students from Guatemala for eight weeks in the fall. The students, who are hosted by Lovett families, participate in classes, advisories, and after-school activities, and serve as cultural ambassadors.

Mock Congress

In Mock Congress, students immerse themselves into the roles of United States senators and representatives. Civics students develop legislation from their social issue research on topics such as animal rights, education, civil liberties, and the armed forces. They participate in legislative debate, engage each other with educated questions and answers, and voice their opinions through voting. Students exit the session with an understanding of how Congress operates and an appreciation for the legislative process.

Siempre Verde

Siempre Verde is Lovett’s protected preserve and research station in the breathtakingly beautiful Ecuadorian cloud forest. Each year, students from all divisions have the opportunity to travel to Siempre Verde to explore this very special extension of Lovett’s campus and to study Spanish, conservation, and research methods.

Student Leadership Council

Student Leadership Council allows for students to explore the concept of leadership through an examination of various different leadership styles and an exploration of significant figures that have had an impact on the world through their leadership. On a microscale, SLC offers students the chance to be a voice for the desires of their peers and to have a tangible impact on their own school environment.

Tutoring at Agape

Twice a month, Middle and Upper School students take an after-school trip to Agape Youth and Family Center where they work one-on-one with Agape students to provide homework help and STEAM classes. It’s a great way for Lovett students to connect with the community and get to know their neighbors.

Washington, DC Trip

Recognizing the importance of learning that occurs outside the classroom, Lovett incorporates experiential education into the curriculum at all levels. Our eighth grade travels to Washington, D.C., for educational learning mixed with fellowship and fun.

One Lovett Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Members of the Lovett community share in mutually beneficial expectations, practices, and commitments to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, which allow us all to thrive. As an inclusively Christian school, we are a community rooted in love and belonging for all, with a profound respect for diversity, service to others, and moral awareness. We share the knowledge that we are richer given the unique and individual identities within our Lion family.

Our community wholeheartedly believes that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging significantly enhance the outcomes and experiences of and in a Lovett education, independent of their background and or identity. We recognize that striving to be a diverse and inclusive community is an ever-evolving imperative that requires empathy, a growth mindset, and skill.

Groups & Alliances

Affinity Groups and Alliances

Middle and Upper School students have the opportunity to participate in affinity groups, which are designed for students to develop and strengthen their own racial, ethnic, or group identity, and alliances, which are also open to students outside of the identity group.

Parent Groups

The Office of Engagement supports parents through regularly scheduled coffees, book studies, and family gatherings. The Lovett International Alliance (LIA) is a parent-run organization that is committed to expanding international awareness by offering events and programs for the entire community.
