Lovett’s Upper School is a dynamic learning environment that balances challenges and expectations with support and care for students as individuals. Our teachers and students place high value on the relationships they create through shared learning, self-discovery, and the development of purpose. Our graduates leave the Riverbank well prepared for future academic endeavors, but more importantly, to be responsible, engaged, and self-aware citizens.

Our Mission:

The Lovett School is a community of belonging that develops students of honor, faith, and wisdom with the character and intellect to thrive in learning and life.

Our Approach to Education:

At Lovett, our students find joy and purpose in learning by doing. Guided by our distinctive approach to whole child education, Lovett faculty immerse students in intellectually rigorous, hands-on learning environments that spark character development, individual passions, and social awareness. By design, we offer students the experiences that deepen their cognitive, emotional, and social skills while inspiring an enduring enthusiasm for learning.

School Leadership

Curriculum

English [12 courses]

The American Studies program is a signature course offered to all 11th grade students. Students in 12th grade choose between British Literature and a variety of spring English electives or AP English Literature.

Math [16 courses]

Ranging from Algebra I Advanced to Post-AP Honors Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra. AP courses include Statistics, Calculus AB, and Calculus BC.

Science [17 courses]

Offers 5 AP courses (Physics 1, Physics C, Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science). Unique advanced biology courses for 11th and 12th grade students include Marine Biology, Botany, Genetics/Anatomy, and two summer travel courses.

Language [39 courses]

Spanish, French, Latin, and Chinese are all offered at Lovett. Each language is available through the AP level. Students can also participate in a summer Spanish immersion course at Siempre Verde, our cloud forest property in Ecuador.

History [19 courses]

Electives range from Environmental Economics to Honors Holocaust and the History of Genocide. Five AP courses are offered: AP World History, AP United States Government and Politics, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, and AP Art History.

Religion [12 courses]

Core religion courses include Intro to Religious Studies, Intro to Old Testament, Intro to New Testament, World Religions, and Religion and Nature. Elective courses range from Ethical Leadership to Religion in Film, and also include a summer travel course to Israel.

Computer Science and Engineering [8

courses]

Features Digital Media & Engineering courses as well as AP Computer Science A and Post-AP Honors Computer Science Studies.

Fine Arts [40

courses]

Courses offered span visual and performing arts, including summer travel courses, six honors courses, AP Art History, and AP Music Theory.

Physical Education

Lifetime Fitness, Wellness, and Health for is required for all ninth grade students. Advanced Fitness is an elective option for 10th-12th grade students.

Electives

Debate and Public Speaking, Newspaper, Yearbook, Introduction to Psychology, Independent Study, Global Online Academy, and more.

upper School Schedule

Each day, students have four or five hour-long classes. On days with four classes, students also have Chapel or community time. All students take seven courses each semester, one of which may be a study period. Each course meets four times during every six-day rotation. Teachers are available for optional tutorial time before and after school. Students start each morning by meeting with their advisory group, except on Wednesdays when we have a school-wide late start to accommodate faculty meetings and collaboration.

College Counseling

Our six college counselors work with students toward self-examination, goal-setting, decision-making, and self-advocacy in the search of options that will allow them to continue their learning beyond Lovett’s gates.

The team offers grade-specific programming and resources starting in ninth grade, with more dedicated and personalized meetings and events starting in tenth grade and lasting through senior year.

Affinity Groups and Alliances

Middle and Upper School students have the opportunity to participate in affinity groups, which are designed for students to develop and strengthen their own racial, ethnic, or group identity, and alliances, which are also open to students outside of the identity group.

Parent Groups

The Office of Engagement supports parents through regularly scheduled coffees, book studies, and family gatherings. The Lovett International Alliance (LIA) is a parent-run organization that is committed to expanding international awareness by offering events and programs for the entire community.
