GEAR UP! Catch-up Friday unfolds Bilscinians’ flair

Biliran Science High School participated in the Catch-up Fridays’ Program launched by the Department of Education on January 12.

Catch-up Friday is anchored to the MATATAG Program with the purpose of reinforcing learning and improving necessary skills to commence the aim of basic education curriculum.

Every Friday, learners dedicate their time two hours in the morning and in the afternoon—reading and analyzing the reading materials provided by their teachers.

After which, students will either write a journal or answer task questions aligned with what they have read.

“I find it very interesting and very fun,” one of the students from 8th grade said when asked about his feedback on Catch-up Friday.

He also emphasized how engag-

ing with this kind of activity helps him enhance his comprehension skills despite having difficulties with Filipino reading.

“The significance of Catch-up Friday is not for the teachers, but solely for the students to enhance or engroove their reading skills. Not just their reading skills, as well as the literacy skills of the students,”

Ms. Merialyn Pantas, Reading Program Coordinator said in an interview.

Implementation of choral reading, citing of unfamiliar words and operating educational games are just some of the activities they have done to make it more effective for the students.

Educators believed that opportunities like this are used to enhance the students’ holistic skills.

The Catch-up Friday program will continue up until the end of the school year.

COME AND ACQUAiNT BSHS Celebrates 3 in 1 Activity

In a lively gathering of camaraderie and achievements, students of Biliran Science High School celebrated its acquaintance party, victory ball, and induction ceremony at the Biliran Gymnasium on November 3, 2023.

Students were gathered inside the gymnasium at 6 o’clock in the evening, exhibiting their semi-formal attire and vibrant smiles. The program started with a doxology performed by the members of the Glee club. It was then followed by the opening remarks of the Head Teacher, Mr. Felix J. Abrigo Jr.

BSHS’ induction ceremony started off with the in-

duction of class officers led by Mr. Abrigo. After the oath-taking ceremony, the students from Grade 11-STEM spiced up the air as they performed their intermission number.

This amazing performance was then followed by the induction of club officers.

After which, the Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) officers also took their oath solemnly.

The officers of the Homeroom Parent Teacher Association (HPTA) and the General Parents-Teachers Association (GPTA) took their places in front for the oath-taking ceremony, which was conducted by Hon. Rico Retorca, and following this is

the induction of faculty and staff led by Mr. Abrigo. Next in line is the most anticipated part of the event, the search for Mr. and Ms. Popularity. Each unit had their chosen candidates go to the hallway and dance a curatcha dance. While students may show their support through cheering, others could also drop some money in there.

On that account, everyone was so thrilled to know the winners of the pageant. In the end, the candidates from unit 2, Justine Ropa of Grade 12-GAS and Dimstar Hughes of Grade 10-Gold, were crowned as Mr. and Ms. Popularity 2023.

Ropa couldn’t believe when he was declared Mr. Popularity of the Year.“Makuri kay aworon biya ak, pero nakaya laman. An na feel ko after gin declare ak kay bagan gin tagaan ak han motivation na umintra han sugad hito na event,” Ropa said.

On the other hand, Hughes also expressed her gratitude towards those who supported her.

“Throughout our recently concluded acquaintance party, I can say that I am successfully connected with the audience by giving my all even though I thought I would not win and of course

just like other people who won or had the opportunity to join, I felt joy as the emcee announced that I was the one who won the competition. I am grateful for those people who have supported me as well as the warm support of the audience that showered me,” Hughes said.

Following that, the hall was filled with cheers and applause for the students who performed their vocal solos and hip-hop dances.

By the end of the program, all the students were up in their seats as they went to the dance floor to dance and party with their classmates and friends.

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) face labor rights abuses and exploitation in South Korea’s Seasonal Worker Program (SWP), February 16, 2024.

According to the report of the Joint Committee with Migrants in Korea (JCMK) and the Migrant Forum in Asia, the said program was exposed of their negligence, failing to protect the rights of their workers from irregularities, trafficking, and forced labor.

Moreover, worker-applicants still have to send their deposit to the LGUs to preclude from overstaying, but the report said it is an abuse of human rights.

In a survey, it was shown that most seasonal workers were paid for 1.8

million to 2.2 million KRW, or P75,600 to P92,400 monthly. This seems to be a good catch compared to the average workers in Metro Manila who only received P573 a day or a little over P12,400 a month.

But the study found that in reality, brokers were reported to collect high recruitment and facilitation fees, take off some amount for the remittances of the workers, and sexually harrass them.

Now, the Lawmakers in House of Representatives and Department of Migrant Workers were sending complaints about their program, since January, they cut off the deployment of Filipinos in as seasonal workers in Korea.

“Para po ito din sa ating mga mangingisda na meron pong platform ang pamahalaan para po mas maipaabot pa sa kanila yung tulong ng pamahalaan at makita nila yung presensya ng pamahalaan doon po sa West Philippine Sea,” Briguera said.

Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for WPS matters, said that the PCG is in talks with BFAR to

ensure the complementary deployment of their vessels in the tense waterway.

“In instances when the PCG temporarily returns to port for logistical requirements, this is the opportunity for BFAR to deploy their boats,” Tarriela said.

In a patrol earlier this month in Bajo de Masinloc, PGC reported that it had monitored the presence of eight Chinese vessels. They

accused the China Coast Guard (CCG) of shadowing its patrol boat, BRP Sierra Madre, on more than 40 occasions and performing dangerous and blocking operation.

BRP Teresa Magbanua was deployed in early February to deliver provisions to Filipino fishers and ensure their safety.

Situated 240 kilometers west of Luzon, Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scar-

ow would you react when your respected leader is being accused of an illegal practice, again? I believe that, leaders are expected to be a model exemplary among its people. And once they become unreasonable with their actions causing stigma on their names, it can impair public trust and confidence on their organization. With the recent controversial issue between former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., it must have produced fear among citizens, disputing the possible danger our country could face but leaving the final judgment on authorities. I am like watching an interesting movie, waiting for the lead’s next scheme, although I am already making my own judgments based on the characters’ statements.

I guess, it’s possible for the former President to have a knowl-

Tedge with those politicians who were on the watchlist for being potentially influenced of illegal substances. Especially because he was once in a position to gather data with less difficulty. But in my perspective, it’s improper to state claims that aren’t supported with evidence unless they are trying to test truths. On January 28, 2024, Duterte threw allegations at our current President Marcos, accusing him of being a drug addict. He was then hit back by Marcos, saying the former president was addicted to the painkiller fentanyl, which may have affected his state of mind and behavior.

Rappler published an article on November 27, 2021, whereas presidential aspirants’ of 2022 elections went through a drug test, which resulted a negative finding for the current President, who matched specific descriptions Duterte said about the alleged drug addict during that year. Marcos could have used this finding to counter the accusation thrown to him. Where he is accused of a data that can be found during Duter-

he education system of a country is where its development begins. Through this educational system, great young minds and talented individuals bring to the nation’s future development and growth.

Southeast Asia’s educational system is continuously changing. Yet, the educational system here in our country remains constantly troubled by nonstop issues since then and now. The Philippine’s placement in every international assessment that measures every student’s academic level signifies the quality of education that we have here in our country.

This circumstance is causing an alarm, as it underscores a substantial issue. Even with the dedicated efforts of hardworking students attempting to enhance their academic achievements, the Philippines has yet to attain a superior ranking in international assessments.

Teachers and students play a crucial role in our education, but should we blame them for the alarming 2023 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)

te’s political position as Mayor. But what Marcos said is a kind of faulty reasoning, attacking the person to make amends of allegations he received. It seems to me that, the current President is like telling Duterte, “Why am I not allowed to use drugs when you also used it?”

During year 2021, opposition leader Vice President Leni Robredo, another contender in the presidential race, gave her opinion about drug test saying, “Dapat hindi siya nakaplano, dapat biglaan para hindi napapaghandaan.” In my perspective, this can give rise to assumptions that Marcos’ results could have been fabricated or he is up to something that could have been already speculated. Duterte also mentioned that Marcos went to Germany for rehabilitation before the campaign for 2022 election. The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) denied on recent accusation thrown by Duterte, that President Marcos is not on their drugs watchlist, and neither in their National Drug Information System (NDIS) or Inter-Agency Drug Information Database (IDID)

has his name listed. Former President then indirectly stated that they are just afraid with the current President’s power to be against at. Duterte is known for his strict personality and straightforward policies. He was labeled as “the Punisher” because of his merciless approach to crime. Since then, he has set his principles when it came to drug addiction. According to a data cited by International Criminal Court (ICC), since his election in 2016, roughly 12,000 and 30,000 civilians were estimated to have been killed in connection with anti-drug operations. These estimated deaths include civilians who were killed vigilante-style. Although, Duterte’s action for drug users took an effect, there are still numbers of deaths that weren’t justified that caused an uprising and anger for the former President. And now that he is no longer in his position, families of victims are waiting for a semblance of accountability for those responsible for the bloodbath and other human rights violations.

Students, teachers, or the system? Who’s to blame?

results?

Looking at it from a teacher’s perspective, an effective teacher must be prepared before teaching to ensure the quality of education. Young learners should be given emphasis on giving a high quality of education, but the results are telling the opposite.

If students could rate, they would probably rate conventional teachers as “low”̶̶̶ again, if students could only rate their teachers. However, it’s not always the teacher’s fault, it’s also about how the students interpret, cooperate, and exert effort in studying. Teaching is not effective if students do not show interest in learning because teaching is a two-way process.

Poor quality of education in our country has resulted in low proficiency levels among students. According to the results of the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), 72 percent of Filipino students performed lower than expected at their academic level.

Instead of submissively acknowledging the short comings, the Depart-

ment tried to put the blame somewhere else. Hence, it is not surprising to DepEd to reason out on focusing on the pandemic recovery and implementing programs like ‘Catch-Up Friday’ to address the issue.

Furthermore, this issue intensified when the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development published the result of the current 2022 PISA where the Philippines ranked third from the bottom gaining scores of 355 in math, 347 in reading, and 373 in science. Unfortunately, our education system is in the worst possible shape, and there is still much work to be done, as evidenced by the nation’s terrible ranking in the 2022 (PISA) for the second time.

In line with this, the advocacy group Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) stated that the Philippine education system is in a terrible state, the low performance of the students affects not only the field of education but also our nation as a whole. Our workforce’s lack will ultimately reflect our basic education system’s shortcomings,

which will have an impact on productivity and a major driver of our competitiveness and economic growth.

Although the government is trying to act on the issue, the actions they’re making do not fit with what needs to be fixed - the system. Other countries only spend 5 hours in their school while Filipino learners almost spend all their time in school with 10hour classes yet still rank lowest in international student’s assessment.

Additionally, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has observed a concerning trend stating that the passing rate of the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT) is persistently lower than other professional board examinations. This alarming trend calls into question both the preparedness of graduates entering the teaching profession and the effectiveness of teacher education programs.

Our country faces persistent challenges in its educational system, which adversely affect various stake-

holders, especially students. Nonetheless, the uncomfortable truth about the quality of education in the Philippines is clear.

So, I am urging the policymakers to carefully discuss the specific aspects of our education system. Unclear policy like ‘no child left behind’ and ‘mass promotion’ is clearly ineffective. Students who are truly not qualified will allow students to advance to the next grade level. This will result to incapability of making innovations and become more productive in their communities.

The Pisa results are not the issue, its whether Filipino students equipped with necessary skills on literacy and numeracy or not. If this is left unsolved, our so called ‘pag-asa ng bayan’ will suffer the setbacks in their high school and college. The Philippines still has a long way to go, and there is a serious education issue that calls for a quick action and cooperation from all sectors.

Diskarte or Diploma

“Daig ng madiskarte ang may diploma.”

An argument that continues to blow in online platforms. And I beg to differ. Though there were stories of entrepreneurs who have proven that their determination and hard work can stand in the tapestry of success, convincing people to choose “diskarte”, these narratives made me pause and ponder, how do we measure success then? Is it money? Nothing more, nothing less?

I understand that success’s definition is subjective and relative. I understand that we have to be well-off to make ends meet. Howev-

We interviewed 100 students to find out which do they prefer, Diploma or Diskarte.

Dear Readers,

er, money is not the beall and end-all of human existence. For instance, to some people, success means to effectively deliver and shape young minds so they can change the world which a non‘diploma’ holder cannot do. Lawyers may not earn as much as a successful business owner, but they are capable of protecting citizens from social diseases by regulating law to maintain peace and order.

On the other hand, to be able to practice a profession means one should have a ‘diploma’. Hence, ‘diploma’ is not only important in achieving a desired outcome but also necessary. The face value of a good academic standing somehow reflects the labor that a person gives to achieve academic success. Henceforth, giving you the edge over your

competitors in the job market who barely managed to have a passing average grade.

My point is, if we insist on equating success with money through a socalled ‘diskarte’, wouldn’t that mean that one day we might have a shortage of skilled professionals in the labor market? Which will eventually backfire on society because of the brain drain phenomenon.

If this brainwashing continues by intentionally convincing that ‘diskarte’ is all you need to be successful, this imposes a threat among the youth. For some children who might hear this argument may be discouraged to study and focus solely on ‘diskarte’.

Can we even afford to see the adverse effects of human capital flight?

Come wrack your brains.

On behalf of the Editorial Board and Staff, we are indeed grateful of your support to The Magnifier. And we will be very happy if you encourage others to read our school’s newspaper.

Respectfully yours,

In a groundbreaking development, the Department of Education (DepEd) has set forth a transformative policy aimed at liberating public school teachers from the shackles of administrative burdens. On January 26, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte signed DepEd Order No. 002 s. of 2024, titled “Immediate Removal of Administrative Tasks of Public School Teachers.” This decision, part of the MATATAG Agenda, aims to improve education delivery while prioritizing teachers’ well-being.

This is a noteworthy work of DepEd as a starting point of listening to the pleas and woes of the teachers in the field. According to the 2018 Teacher Workload, 50 common ancillary services are assigned to teachers in understaffed schools. Because of these ancillary workloads and administrative tasks, teachers tend to shift focus from teaching.

DO 002 wants DepEd-employed teachers in all public elementary and secondary schools to concentrate more on their main job – teaching. By reducing non-teaching duties, the order aims to help teachers feel better about their work. Moreover, without extra tasks, classrooms may become better places for teaching and learning.

Duterte’s emphasis on removing non-teaching tasks aligns with the agency’s vision to provide robust support to teachers, allowing them to focus more on the art of teaching and learning process itself. This strategic initiative is not merely administrative streamlining; it is a conscious effort to create an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning which is a commendable effort of DepEd.

Personnel Administration,

Property/Physical Facilities Custodianship, General Administrative Support, Financial Management, Records Management, Program Management like the Feeding, School DRRM and other related programs are just one of the few administrative tasks mentioned from the DepEd Order that will be removed from the care of the teachers.

Yet, a thorough examination reveals potential challenges that merit consideration. While the order aims to alleviate administrative burdens on public school teachers, there are concerns about unintended consequences that may impact both educators and students adversely.

One key apprehension is the immediate removal of administrative tasks without a comprehensive plan for training and adaptation could lead to a learning curve for teachers, potentially affecting the teaching-learning process initially. A possibility of incomplete task delegation, wherein the redistribution of responsibilities might unintentionally burden other staff members like the master teachers, non-teaching staff like the administrative assistants, head teachers and even the school heads or disrupt the smooth functioning of school administration.

What’s more is the actual situation in the field – schools. Will it really be an immediate removal of administrative tasks from teachers, or will it only be on the surface, but in reality, teachers will still make reports on behalf of the school administrators while the latter are already buried under a mountain of their own paperwork? This administrative “musical chairs” approach won’t even come close to enhancing the caliber of instruction unless

“For me, Catch-up Friday can help learners develop the habit of reading and improve their reading levels. It can also help to address the learning gap among high school students if it was properly implemented. This would be possible if teachers were oriented and well trained on the conduct of Catch-up Friday. Reading and evaluation materials should also be available to ensure success of the implementation.”

the prompt appointment of more staff is given priority.

Speaking of appointment of more staff, the DepEd Order is nonchalant in terms of the additional funding to hire non-teaching staff. Will they provide additional funding to schools? Instead, they directed schools to bill these against the maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE). This only shows that the budgets are inadequate to hire additional personnels.

Moreover, if they really had ample budget all along then there would not be an issue regarding the infrastructure and supply demands on public schools. The main reason why teachers deal with these tasks that are unrelated to their profession is the lack of non-teaching teaching staff and supporting personnel. If they cannot properly address these disparities, these only lead to uncertainty whether the execution of DepEd Order will be equitable and unbiased.

One more thing, how quickly can the government shift the gears of bureaucracy to address staffing gaps promptly, even if they could reallocate funds to enable schools to issue job orders for temporary employees? Can we expect to feel the impact of DO 002 this academic year or will it just become like the rest of the policies that got lost in translation?

While the intent behind DepEd Order No. 002 s. of 2024 is commendable – aiming to create a more teacher-focused and conducive learning environment – a careful examination of its potential drawbacks is crucial. In order to facilitate a seamless transfer of administrative responsibilities to the relevant staff, a 60-day

transition time has been set, and DepEd has pledged to supply the funding required for any necessary modifications.

On the other hand, these showed that DepEd is hearing out the apprehensions of our educators. However, without decent workforce and financial support these will only fall under the numerous policies that were improperly implemented. The institution had long been criticized for its said incompetencies on handling and implanting its policies. A hand-on-hand cooperation between the administration and its people is the key to achieving their visions but without building trust this is only a mere façade.

As it attempts to strike a balance between its administrative and instructional tasks, the education sector faces a difficult issue as a result of this changing situation. Although the idea to relieve teachers of non-teaching duties is praiseworthy, its success depends on careful planning, sufficient money, and a concerted effort from all stakeholders. The ultimate objective, which should not change as schools go through this transitional period, is to improve kids’ educational experiences by freeing up teachers to focus on what they do best—teach.

Hence, continuous evaluation and adjustments based on feedback will be key to mitigating any negative effects and fostering a positive educational landscape. This move by DepEd is a way of coping with the changing demands of the educational system, thus, deserves praise for showing its support to the teachers. However, will it really be a big step ahead or is it just another sinkhole disguised as a stepping stone?

Respecting human rights and giving justice to victims of state abuses, were just some of President Marcos’ promises to keep.

The alliance between the family of Marcos and his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte has been shattered publicly when Duterte called Marcos a “drug addict” during a rally against moves to change the charter. This threatens Marcos’ reform agenda and risk fueling instability.

In my opinion, they should talk this through by having a private conversation instead of slandering each other publicly. If you ask me, I think, they should act more professional, especially because they are the one taking the lead. Instead of making another problem that troubles a lot of people, which I guess also tests the honesty of our current President, they should address more serious problem that affects a lot of citizens. Such as the inflation that also involves the

current President’s promise regarding the 20 pesos per kilo for rice, and changing the Philippines for the better.

It is my understanding that, Philippines is led by imperfect presidents, trying to fulfill their promises they have made in front of their countrymen. I know that I also have to understand that most of the time, fulfilling promises requires sacrifices, and performing unacceptable actions must involve great consequences. Great changes demand great sacrifices. At the end of the day, both words and action matter. Administration also involves the support and trust of his people, and because of the circulated issue, one must prove his innocence by what his people desires. And this can be remedied by Marcos, through accepting Duterte’s dare to have a public drug test. An open and honest process.

During the 2012 Scarborough shoal standoff, China pursued to occupy or “grab” the Scarborough shoal which had been of Philippines possession until the standoff. After a few weeks, the internation community decided to urge both countries to withdraw to ease tensions. Both nations agreed and decided to withdraw. However, after both countries withdrew, China immediately sent warships to counter any forces that the Philippines might send. The blatant betrayal of China was met with international outcry. After a few months, American footage shows Chinese structures and ballistic missiles stationed at the shoal.

on January 2013 which put China’s actions to be unlawful in accordance with UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea). But unfortunately, China is like a spoiled child who won’t listen to what their parents say until their demands are met. So, on July 12, 2016, a court case was decided to be held in Hague Netherlands in which the PCA (Permanent Court of Arbitration) is located.

According to the PCA, The Philippines claims for the west Philippine Sea ruled overwhelmingly in favor of the Philippines against China’s claim for the south China sea. But alas reality often disappoints as China considered the court ruling as null. With the court ruling being “China’s historic rights claims over maritime areas inside the “nine-dash line” have no lawful effect if they exceed what is entitled to under UNCLOS. China’s actions are the reason for the creation of this informative essay.

With China’s constant bullying, information about the conflict is needed to be shared.

But despite all of what had happened, China is still continuously harassing Filipino vessels over the west Philippine Sea. And with all the events currently unfolding the Philippines is still continuously persisting that they rightfully own the west Philippine Sea.

SOLO-HOTS: Why Not Give It a Shot?

Does SOLO-HOTS ring a bell to you?

In the ever-evolving structure of education, educators are finding various ways to enhance the teaching methodology and learning skills of their students.

The Department of Education (DepEd) stated that the performance of the Philippines in the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is 5 to 6 years behind in

learning competencies, scoring about 120 points less than the average scores in its 2022 assessment. Sadly, the result says a lot about the educational system of the country.

In response to these pressing educational challenges, educators are increasingly turning to progressive approaches like the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) taxonomy.

SOLO is more than just an educational acronym; it’s an innovator designed to develop

Filipinos couldn’t agree more, when Ferdinand uttered a tempting proposition. It has almost been a year and nine months since Marcos’ political party, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas said in a statement that Marcos would ensure to lower rice prices once elected as president. A 20 pesos per kilo of rice that became a dream for most of us. It did not only brought hope for poor people but for those individuals who try their very best to live independently. It could also be the reason why Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was able to dominate the number of votes for the 2022 presidential candidates. An inviting statement that if you’re an ignorant, you will get easily swayed. The possibility of it remaining as a wishful thinking is great for lowering its price will affect farmers the most.

the students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This model classified the student’s understanding into five levels of complexity: prestructural, unistructural, multistructural, relational, and extended abstract.

In 2023, Professor John Hattie referred SOLO as “the most powerful model for understanding these levels and integrating them into learning intentions and success criteria.” This tool is helpful since teachers were able to identify which level their students belonged to as they assessed their learners’ comprehension and critical analysis.

WishfulpRICEThinking Value

Farmers who cultivate it— that without them we won’t be able to sustain our daily need for energy are affected the most with the statement been spoken. Has it ever crossed your mind? What will happen to the agricultural sectors? Will they still be able to persuade youths to pursue agriculture in the future? Because if the day comes that what remains in their mind is that farmers will work for other people and not for their families anymore, they might be discourage to continue agriculture.

Lowering the price value of rice requires great sacrifices. Because it also means lowering the price of rice production, expanding the rice fields to cultivate more, the need for more fertilizers or other materials necessary in cultivating it, and so much more. These are just some of the necessities in lowering rice prices, that supports the testimony—it will take a lot of time for that to be fulfilled, not

Nevertheless, education systems have prioritized memorization and rote learning, which primarily engage Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) such as remembering and understanding. This emphasis has been deeply engraved in teaching practices over time. And it might stand as a hindrance to implementing innovative solutions.

In addition, it’s worth noting that while learning languages and mathematics requires a certain degree of memorization to achieve fluency and proficiency in this field, researchers havefound that developing deeper understanding and higher-or-

even after 2 years. It has come to my own understanding that in order to have a lower price for rice, there should be an increase of supply for it. Because how will the farmers sustain their daily expenses, if they will give almost every grain of rice to the market?

So, in my perspective, if they want to hit two birds with one stone, they should support the farmers first for bigger production that will lead them in their main goal. As a line from a movie says, in solving a problem there’s a need in recognizing that there is one. But what if they fail to fulfill that wishful thinking rice value promise? Will you hate them for being a liar, or hate yourself for being gullible? Either way, one must be responsible for their action. One should not blame others. This became a lesson for me that I should avoid uttering promises I am uncertain with. For I will cause pain for others and feel the guilt as I live in shame.

der cognitive skills would better prepare students for their exams and even real-world challenges.

With our previous performance and our current rank in PISA, changes in cultivating students to transcend traditional learning boundaries are important in bridging the gap in learning outcomes highlighted by assessments. However, is it really possible to break other people’s concept that students’ intelligence only varies with their lower order thinking skills? The answer is simple: there’s no harm in giving it a shot. So start by embracing the SOLO-HOTS.

OPPENHEIMER: A Tragedy of Greatness

Does evil come from an external factor, or do they originate from within us? A thought-provoking question that might lead you to another one once you watch Oppenheimer.

rounding the development of a weapon that has the potential to cause massive harm.

He is a theoretical physicist from the United States who contributed to the Manhattan Project, which produced the two atomic bombs that were detonated on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II. Oppenheimer originally hesitated to join the Manhattan Project but eventually agreed due to his sense of duty toward his country. However, driven by a firm conviction that defeating fascism was essential to preserving Western civilization, he decided to take charge of the project. The urgency to prevent Nazi Germany from developing the bomb initially served as the scientist’s primary determination, but as the research progressed, his conscience began to trouble him. His awareness that the atomic bomb would perhaps cause the end of the world shocked him to his core.

With its riveting historical psychodrama theme, Oppenheimer is known as an epic thriller film from 2023 written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan. It won 7 awards at the 2024 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, making a significant achievement for Nolan and the film crew. The film is noted for its authenticity and gripping nature for much of its three hours, a dense and intricate period piece, playing out in a tangle of timelines. The movie explores significant personal and career achievements, such as his involvement in bomb development, the controversies he faced, the anti-Communist assaults that nearly destroyed him, and the complex relationships that both supported and troubled him.

Cillian Murphy portrays J. Robert Oppenheimer, as a fascinating but disturbed man who explores the complex moral conundrums sur-

oath that has such a heavy price yet be broken so easily. From the movie alone you could say that Oppenheimer is a man renowned for his brilliance and creativity yet easily swayed by the actions of his enemies.

He experienced psychological effects from the making of the atomic bomb after witnessing the destruction produced by the Japanese bombs. He suffered from nightmares, troubling memories, and developed a sense of isolation. He believed that he had liberated a force capable of quickly eradicating the whole civilization. The film gives a detailed portrayal of the internal pain Oppenheimer had as he questioned the ethics of science and the obligations of scientists.

The helplessness of being unable to control the very weapon he had created. Despite a man known for his brilliance, adultery cannot truly be separated from the human body. Love clouds a man in his judgment, even an

The incongruous persona of the father of the atomic bomb has come to represent both moral complexity and scientific brilliance. Oppenheimer called the first atomic weapon “technically sweet,” but as the obliterating light blanketed the New Mexico desert, his thoughts drifted to the terrifying line from the Bhagavad Gita: “I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

ho would have known that the odyssey towards countless fights and tiresome midnights would be more than just a sweet nothing?

When the emcee announced the winner for the 2024 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, everyone’s reaction leaped from troubled to bejeweled. The name of the mastermind behind the sublime 13 pop tracks was called. Taylor Swift felt like walking on air as she paved her way to the stage.

“This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number,” Taylor said as her lips curved into a sweet smile. In the field of arts and symphonies, Taylor has made a history that has moved millions of listeners all over the world. From pop music to indie-folk to electro-pop, she enchanted Swifties with her

multi-genre songs. But underneath the invincible facade of her image lies the black hole of her past. She was involved in a lot of controversies, damaging her reputation. Yet, she remained silent. She couldn’t get a chance to speak up for herself because haters were extensively throwing backlash at her. Until exhaustion killed her fiery passion, and the next thing people noticed, she disappeared from public view. It was her extended hiatus since the beginning of her career.

During the past months that Taylor spent after retreating from the spotlight, she’s done nothing but write and record her new album in Nashville. And after the long silence, she knocked everyone down with a feather when she released her Reputation album. Little did they know, it was just the beginning of her comeback. She released several albums and re-recorded the stolen ones to claim ownership. These albums gained heightened prominence due to their enhanced production quality,

making her fans feel a sense of nostalgia while at the same time embracing the evolution of her artistry.

Following these whirlwind successes, Taylor continued to reignite her reputation as she released her latest album, “Midnights.” Which clinched the prestigious Grammy Award for Album of the Year, solidifying her status as a reigning icon for winning four consecutive awards in the music industry.

Every song that falls on this record encapsulates profound emotions and mirrors different stories that could just be unfolded at midnight. One of these is Anti-Hero, the lead single of this album, which brought the listeners to another spectrum of reality with its poignant lyrics and ardent beat.

Perhaps if people would just give themselves time to pause and ponder Taylor’s song, they would’ve noticed that it’s not just about her romance, regrets, and agony; it’s how she got lost and had lost everything and got it back.

Perfectly Imperfect Placid Nature of Kumpay

Are you feeling lost?

Be found in a newly discovered geologic marvel of Biliran. Nestled in the heart of the Municipality of Biliran, amidst the growing trees of Barangay Canila, lies a geological wonder that has captured the interest and brought serenity to the troubled souls of different people— the Kumpay of Canila. With its hill-like structure, visitors will get to experience climbing the rolling hills of Batanes or the chocolate hills of Bohol, and witness a panoramic countryside view over its hilltop terrain.

Before Kumpay was known for its placid nature, it used to be an area of growing cogon-like grass that served as food for cows that were being pastured upon its wonderful landscape.

These cogon-like grasses are termed as kumpay, hence the name “Kumpay”.

Traveling to Kumpay is somewhat easy, with its two-course way visitors can take, they just have to choose. They can travel to Kumpay by traversing a relatively rising to a great height road going through Biliran National Agricultural High School (BNAHS), or they can also pass through Barangay Hugpa and get there without worries. Certainly, it will take you a long ride before you get to Kumpay. But as you arrive there, you will be convinced that a good destination is worth traveling far. Like, how an individual is supposed to believe in their so-called life despite its perfectly imperfect challenges along the way.

Visitors to the Kumpay are treated to more than its breathtaking roads. Adventure seekers who don’t want to exert too much energy climbing high mountains can set-up their tents in just a few walks after parking their vehicles there. For those craving and needs a more leisurely experience, panoramic viewpoints with its inviting and refreshing wind on the hilltop offer the perfect vantage point to soak in the beauty of this newly discovered tourist attraction of Biliran. With the clean cut of grasses in the meadows, anywhere can be a place for everyone to sit and set their tents for camping. Beyond its geological marvels, there are simple yet hospitable personnel that can accommodate tourist’s hand-

ful needs and help campers maintain their personal space in the vicinity of Kumpay.

There is a shortcoming when it comes to electricity since it is still a work in progress. For this reason, it is a paradise without lights at night, but a place where stars could be more visible. A perfect place for nature lovers, indeed.

But as the sun sets over the undulating hills of Kumpay, it’s easy to understand why this relaxing destination continues to captivate travelers from near and far. Whether you’re drawn by its geological wonders, placid nature, or simply the promise of adventure, a visit to Kumpay is sure to leave a lasting impression on your heart and soul.

Biliran Island Province – an island of flourishing mountains, pristine beaches and countless waterfalls located in the eastern part of the Visayas which people usually haven’t heard of. Often, it is mistaken as ‘Tagbilaran’ in Bohol, others mistakenly say it’s part of Leyte, which was true. But now, it has already been an island province.

An hour drive from the provincial capital lies a coastal municipality. Kawayan citizens are commonly known for their hospitality and how heartwarming they greet their visitors. Above all, this place of interest allows for a little exercise before you delve into the cold waters.

Nestled in the heart of Kawayan Biliran, Mondelo’s Nature Park stands as a testament to the natural beauty that Biliran has to offer. Accessible to both locals and tourists, Mondelo’s Nature Park welcomes visitors with open arms. As you step into this haven of natural wonders, the captivating views of offshore islands unfold, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey. You could even smell the salty breeze of the sparkling sea and have a rejuvenating dip in their swim-

ming pool. One of Mondelos’ highlights is its culinary offerings. The park’s restaurant boasts an extensive menu featuring a delightful array of dishes that cater to various tastes. Mondelo’s Nature Park also caters to those looking for a perfect spot to enjoy the day or evening with its open cottages. When daybreaks, you could see the lush greenery of the island complimenting the vastness of the blue sky. With its breathtaking view, it’s either you’ll gasp with so much adoration as you take photos of them, or you’ll forget that phone even exists. For those enchanted by the park’s evening ambiance, there are nighttime cottage rentals, providing a magical setting to create lasting memories.

my thoughts - typical teenage girl.

Much like a typical teenage girl, I like Taylor Swift. Much like a typical teenage girl, I fall in love... sometimes even with my friends. As in, romantically.

Having to balance criticism and norms while still being nice to them is not my forte. Like, what do you mean I can’t post about my opinionated aunts on Facebook? Oops, I just did. 13 people laughed reaction on my post.

Teenage girls are expected to act prim and proper, sociable, demure, mature for her age and they’re expected to be able to stand up for themselves yet judged as ‘rude’ when you reasoned out at a family gathering.

At some point in our lives, it may have come to us, the thought of wanting to run away. “What if life is better if I was something else? If I was someone else?” At age 11, we have learned to have philosophical thoughts that could most likely beat Plato, or maybe not, you decide.

It has been considered a “compliment” that we grew up fast because, “Oh hey, she has a good sense of self-awareness, that must mean she’s incapable of committing mistakes, right?” Hah, no. The sad part about being more mature than your age is when you accidentally let your childish behavior out when you’re older; and a lot of people have many negative comments about it—as if someone asked.

Being a teenage girl is probably the hardest time for any girl, lady, or woman out there. No one would be willing to understand your temper and your tantrums, no one would want to understand why you get defensive, even if it wasn’t your fault in the first place.

And no one would understand why, and how you saw the world differently, earlier than most children.

temperature so boiling hot. You cannot smile because your lips are too dry. Your tongue seeks nothing but a sweet nectar of refreshment. You’re supposed to be having fun. You should be enjoying your walk after class with some friends, but instead, you keep on grunting in disgust at how you bathe in your own sweat. Because unlike the previous summer, this one is different. And it’s because of him.

Tired from all the things that had happened today, I ride on a bus with the yearning of laying my back on my bed. Everything feels so exhausting and energy-consuming. My eyelids became heavier. I was about to close my eyes and succumb to a deep slumber despite the heat and commotion of the other passenger when I noticed the man sitting adjacent to me. He’s wearing a black tuxedo that perfectly matches his vintage loafers. Instead of ranting about how hot the weather is right now, he just sits there in the corner, frozen and silent. I carefully observed his actions. From the way his eyebrows creased as he bit his nails to his endless leg tapping. Just by

looking at him, you can tell that he’s quite nervous about something. I also notice that some passengers are irritated. They keep on mumbling; others are whispering to one another. The man who sits next to the tuxedo guy gasped loudly. He then covered his mouth. People here are acting so weird, but why?

It seems like I’ve been looking at them for so long that I didn’t even realize the bus had already stopped. People were in a hurry to get off, so I didn’t immediately stand up. We locked eyes again with the man in a tuxedo. His face appeared gentle, but it seemed like it was about to burst in its redness. As he approached my direction, I contemplated whether to smile at him or not. In the end, I stood up to gather the courage to do so. He paused briefly by my side due to the crowded passengers. I was surprised when a sudden, loud noise abruptly stopped the bustling crowds. But instead of covering our ears from the noise, we covered our noses. Because following the loud explosion, a foul odor filled the entire bus.

We all looked again at the man in the tuxedo. His face was filled with shame. He immediately ran off the bus, and many of us couldn’t move due to the incident. I quickly thought about the man sitting next to him. He’s not covering his mouth; he’s covering his nose. And I think we all know why.

Dual Reality of Neuralink Odyssey: Which weighs heavy?

Aren’t we too much for trying to control our minds with technology?

It’s not new to everybody that technology affects almost every aspect of an individual’s life as it develops. It changed the way we behave and operate. Unfortunately, its progress is leading people to exceed the humanitarian limits.

In the year 2020, the Neuralink company which was co-founded by a billionaire technologist, Elon Musk, executes its plan of planting chips in the human brain. It was said that the proposed implantation aims to restore vision and mobility to people by linking brains to computers and providing individuals the ability to control external devices with their thoughts. Mr. Musk has also previously suggested that the proposed technology could help ease concerns about humans being displaced by AI.

In September, the company received approval of recruitment for the human trial but they only proceeded with their plans in January. Mr. Musk announced just this January 29, 2024, that his company successfully implanted the brain chip in the receiver. The recipient was “recovering well,” Mr. Musk wrote on his social media platform X

(formerly Twitter) on Monday evening, adding that it shows a promising result.

The company’s device contains a chip and an electrode array of more than 1, 000 super thin and flexible conductors that a surgical robot threads into the cerebral cortex. Electrodes are designed to register thoughts related to motion.

Furthermore, the technology known as brain-computer interface (BCI), has a wide range of potential applications, particularly for those with disabilities, according to the experts in the field.

“I think, at least in the immediate future, it’s going to potentially revolutionize the way people with sensory or motor deficits might be able to interact with the environment and live more independently,” says Xing Chen, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at The University of Pittsburgh, whose work focuses on BCIs.

BCIs have previously shown promise in enabling people to operate technology with their thoughts, letting paralyzed patients move a cursor or operate a robotic arm. Professor of Active Implantable Medical Devices at Kings College, Anne Vanhoestenberghe notes that during a recent trial, a person was able to manipulate a video game

with their thoughts.

While the experimental research about the implantation is ongoing, another individual contradicts the idea of continuing the said experiment. According to the Pew Research Center, men are somewhat more favorable about this idea than women. Among women, 61% say computer chip implants in the brain would be a bad idea for society, while just 6% say it would be a good idea. The balance of opinion tilts in the same direction among men, 50% see it as a bad idea, and 20% good idea.

Religion also plays a crucial view in this idea. People with a high level of religious commitment say widespread use of computer chip implants in the brain would be a bad idea for society. By comparison, 44% of those low in religious commitment say this would be a bad idea, while 20% say it would be good and 35% say they’re not sure.

The competitive landscape raises potential issues concerning the welfare of the patients in the study. According to Nathan Higgins, a PhD candidate in Psychology at Monash University, it is notoriously difficult to recruit participants for neural implant studies. Trials are naturally risky and

it requires a lot of participants that must meet the criteria to be eligible.

Even though Mr. Musk is notorious and can help the company look for a participant, Neuralink Company needs to be prepared to provide long-term support to patients for possibly several decades. If things go wrong, patients may need support to live with the consequences and if things go right, Neuralink should ensure that the implanted chips won’t stop working.

As stated by Nathan Higgins, in 2022, a company called Second Sight Medical Product demonstrated the risks. Second Sight made retinal implants to treat blindness. When the company went bankrupt, it left

Surge in Cybercrime

Over the recent years, Cybercrime has been a pressing problem of our country. In this ever evolving world where people are becoming more dependent on technology, this poses a significant growth of crimes involving the use of it. Cybercrime doesn’t only affect individuals but also government, institutions and several organizations.

As the use of technology arises many problems also emerge. We thought that online is a safe place to store our sensitive and confidential data but then complexity occurs. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr was among those of the unsuccessful targets, by trying to infiltrate his personal website “bongbongmarcos.com”. Also according to him the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) has a record of at least 17,000 hacked attempts from December up to February.

more than 350 patients around the world with obsolete implants and no way to remove them. Neuralink must be prepared and should have a wide range of insights about their potentially long study. Thoughts create a neural pathway, reinforcing patterns of thinking. The flexibility of the brain means people have the power to change and interpret the life that each individual has. Thoughts of being controlled by technology will surely be a hard one for every individual. However, thoughts being controlled can allow the individual to interpret the kind of idea that pops into their mind. If this study succeeds, they’re likely to transform a patient’s life.

According to Jef frey Ian Dy, DICT Under secretary, several at tempts were made to invade some of the government servers. There is an unidenti fied hacker that tried to infiltrate a server used by Filipino overseas workers

In the midst of facing these challenges, Kaspersky Internet Security advises that to prevent the rampant spread of Cybercrime it is important to conduct regular software updates to eliminate possible threats, changing passwords into a more strong one, allow multi-factor authentication login, avoid giving out personal information, be more cautious, use anti-virus software.

As we stand in this fast changing world, it is crucial to have knowledge of what is happening in your surroundings. The fight against cybercrime is not a mere challenge it is more serious than one person could think. By being more attentive and careful about what we clicked online, cooperation with one another, we can achieve a more secure and resilient digital world.

Heat Index Rises to Dangerous Level

April 2024 — Philippines suffered extreme heat as the heat index in different areas were declared as dangerous level according to the weather bureau PAGASA.

Highest heat index of 46˚C was recorded last April 1 in Catarman, Northern Samar which is at a dangerous level. A heat index between 42°C to 51°C is considered “dangerous,” according to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). People who are exposed to these high temperatures may

suffer from heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke but according to PAGASA, it is expected that the heat index will exceed 40˚C and they have already warned people about this.

In response to the said phenomenon, Department of Education has given the school heads the authority to suspend the conduct of in-person and shift to the Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) in times of extreme heat and other calamities that may affect the health and safety of learners, teach-

ers, and non-teaching personnel under the reiteration of Department Order (DO) 037, issued in 2022.

The Department of Agriculture also responded by giving a reminder to farmers who are raising livestock to prevent animals from heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Current abnormal heat this summer has led to numerous complaints from Filipinos. Moreover, PAGASA still advises people to not stay under the sun for a long time, and should have 8 to 12 glasses of water every day.

Going Green

PALCONIT
“To see it happen is not surprising, it’s frightening.”
- Stephanie Dutkieuicz

“Go green” has always been the tagline of the science community. From patronizing eco-friendly products to a conscious decision to cut down the carbon footprint. To “go green” means finding balance between the life that you live, the impact of your life and choices on the planet and being mindful and responsible enough to help maintain the ecological balance to preserve the planet, its ecosystem, and its natural resources.

Green is associated with plants, nature, the Earth, and life in general. But what if we become literally green? Is this a boon or a bane?

Over the past two decades, the color of Earth’s Ocean has changed significantly. Scientists are worried and keep coming to an odd conclusion that the Earth is going greener. Not green in the sense that it is sustainable, but in literal green. Though this color appears unclear to the human eye, scientists undoubtedly indicate that the Earth is in constant change and is caused by human- driven climate change.

been telling me for years that these changes in ocean color are going to happen”, Stephanie Dutkieuicz, research scientist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences and the Center for Global Changes said. She also added that these changes are consistent with man- induced changes to our climate.

However, experts say that it would take around 30 years to identify a trend driven exclusively by changes in ocean’s color because of climate change. Subsequently in 2019, scientists determined that by tracking smaller variations of other ocean colors, they could cut a chunk of time of that figure to spot signals of climate change with just 20 years of monitoring.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched a satellite called Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud Ocean Ecosystem (PACE) on February 8, 2024. PACE will measure ocean color to better understand how the ocean and atmosphere exchange carbon dioxide.

Increased Brain Volume Links to Physical Activities

Physical activity is linked to increased brain volumes in areas important for memory and learning according to Clinical Researchers of Pacific Neuroscience Institute’s Brain Health Center at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, February 10,2024.

An international study involving clinical researchers from the Pacific Neuroscience Institute’s Brain Health Center has uncovered a fascinating connection between regular exercise and improved brain health. It reveals that regular physical activity, even at moderate levels, is linked to increase brain volumes in areas important for memory and learning, offering a straightforward approach to enhancing brain health and reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study’s results are presented in detail in a report that was just released in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. According to this study, physical activity is linked to an increase in the size of brain areas that are important for learning and memory.

Prenuvo imaging centers, a key collaborator in this research, looked at MRI brain scans from 10,125 people and it was reported that those who regularly engaged in physical activities such as walking, running or sports had larger brain volumes in key areas. This includes the

gray matter and white matter. Gray matter helps with processing information while white matter connects different brain regions, as well as the hippocampus, which is important for memory.

“Our research supports earlier studies that show being physically active is good for your brain. Exercise not only lowers the risk of dementia but also helps in maintaining brain size, which is crucial as we age.” Cyrus A. Raji, M.D., the lead researcher, said, explaining the findings in simple terms. It is stated that even moderate levels of physical activity, such as taking fewer than 4,000 steps a day, can have a positive effect on brain health. This is a lot more manageable goal for many people than the frequently recommended 10,000 steps.

In 2020, a study published in the Lancet indicated that around twelve modifiable risk factors including physical exercise, reduce the chance of Alzheimer’s disease. This study expands on earlier research by the same group, which linked enhanced brain anatomy to calorie burn from recreational activities.

Study highlighted an easy way to keep brains healthy, that even a daily walk or a favorite sport and regular physical activity can have lasting benefits for brain health.

Keto diet, why don’t you try it?

Diet has always been the top solution of every individual that aims to achieve their ideal body.

In about 100 ways of Diet Plan, Ketogenic or keto is the most used diet plan among others. Keto diet is a science-based, low carbohydrate, moderate protein, high

ple to lose weight. But keto was first discovered for controlling seizures and there are many other dietary-therapies benefits as well, such as improved neurological functioning, increased mental clarity, and sustained all-day energy. It now involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. Weight loss and reduced risk of certain diseases can be beneficial for your health.

In ketogenic diet plan, there are several versions, and what people eat depends on the type. According to Healthline’s Post on The Ketogenic Diet: A Detailed Beginner’s Guide to Keto, it includes:

Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): It’s a very low carb, moderate protein, and high fat diet. It’s usually 70 % fat, 20 % protein, and only 10 % carbohydrates.

Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher carb refeeds,

such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high carb days.

Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts. High protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein, and 5% carbs. The most popular keto strategy and the one that is most strongly advised for newcomers is SKD, which is included in all of these versions. The main goal of SKD followers is usually fat loss or weight loss. Additionally, people may be trying to reduce inflammation, cholesterol, and some of the symptoms associated with depression and mental health issues.

Have you heard of PCOS?

Do you know someone who has this condition?

If so, then read this.

Basic rules for SKD are:

1. Limit your carb intake to 20-50 grams of net carbs per day;

2. Consume moderate amounts of protein;

3. Consume high amounts of fat.

4. An intake of 30 grams of net carbohydrates or less will typically induce ketosis.

Though ketogenic diet is known as a rigid carbohydrate restriction diet that increases an individual’s intake of fat, it can cause short-term adverse effects like keto flu, which include headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Diarrhea, diminished sports performance, weight gain, decreased muscle mass, slowed metabolism, and an elevated risk of diabetes and heart disease are additional adverse effects of the ketogenic diet.

(PCOS) is a reversible metabolic condition that makes significant contribution to the global epidemic of lifestyle-related chronic disease. It is a complex multisystem

World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that PCOS affects approximately 8–13% of reproductive-aged women, estimated at over 200 million women worldwide as a result of sedentary lifestyle and up to 70% of those remain undiagnosed. Majority of women with PCOS manifest multiple metabolic features including obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), and hyperandrogenism (a medical condition characterized by high

levels of androgen). There are no concrete findings to identify the underlying cause of PCOS. Researchers think that having a high insulin level, low-grade inflammation, and obesity are some of the several factors that cause it. Also, genes play a role in this condition, if a mother has PCOS her daughter is most likely to have it.

Furthermore, PCOS is scarier than you think. When you think that it only affects the reproductive system, you’re wrong. Along with having it, many problems also arise such as Type 2 Diabetes, Non-alco-

Is the price of smoking measured only in money, or in life itself? Does a puff of smoke justify a lifetime of compromised health?

Smoking is an old aged habit of many individuals. It’s like taking drugs and falling in love with the ecstasy it offers, your body keeps on looking for the taste it gives even though deep inside it is shattering you piece by piece. Smoking addiction is somehow similar to taking your life into the door of death, leading to your own doom. This addiction does not only challenge the health officials, but also the smoker itself.

“A comparison of immune responses in smokers and ex-smokers revealed that the inflammatory response returned to normal levels quickly after smoking cessation, while the impact on adaptive immunity persisted for 10 to 15 years,” observes Darragh Duffy, Head of the

Translational Immunology

Unit at the Institute Pasteur.

Nowadays not only adults were affected by this broad range addiction, even minors are. Tempted by the urge and influence of their environment and people, they choose to be engrossed in the path that they might regret later on. For them being perceived as “cool” is more alluring rather than to be seen as “healthy”. Trying to escape the chain of smoking is really a tenacious task. Many succeeded but some did not. Unfortunately for those who failed, they continue to live in the cycle of harming themselves in exchange for momentary pleasure.

Even for those who succeeded, the battle is not yet done. Still, many health consequences await. Smoking makes it harder for the body to fight infections and diseases because it damages

the immune cells and makes them work less effectively. You see, it doesn’t guarantee that if you quit smoking you’ll live a healthy life.

Additionally, smoking has a long-term impact on the body. Such as asthma, diabetes, blood vessel disease, pneumonia, stroke and etc. In short, smoking weakens the body’s natural defense system, making it more vulnerable.

Even though smoking has a lot of serious threats, people tend to continue despite the danger it poses. Ignoring the warning and advice of the health professionals, willingly subject themselves to suffering and agony.

Smoking won’t give you anything better, hence disease is the only thing it offers. It is better to quit before it is too late. Don’t waste your life into something worthless

Untended Dreams

n sports, a special field like Para Games, is somehow interesting to individuals as it emphasizes the ability of those who have special needs. Biliran Province conducted its Provincial Meet and Para Games to allow those people who have special needs to showcase their ability when it comes to Sport.

International competitions for students-athletes with orthopedic handicaps/amputees (OH), visually impaired (VI), and intellectually disabled (ID) under Special Education (SPED) classes, including goalball, bocce, and para-athletics, will take place during the Paralympic Games. Even though disabled athletes had participated in sports for almost a century, they did not re-

ceive widespread recognition until after World War II.

Does sending athletes for para games without training and preparation reflects the incompetence and incoherence of the department’s mission to have an inclusive education?

Sending an unprepared athlete for para-games causes a lot of challenges, given that they have special needs, letting them compete without proper training and not checking if they’re ready will lead to calling of safety concerns. This lack of specificity inevitably led to blurred information and gave no clear pathway for injury prevention.

Just like what Vience Niel B. Tregal has experienced

during the recently concluded Biliran Provincial Sports Meet 2024 held at Marienor Mountain Resort. He is a 16 years old Grade 11 learner of Biliran Science High School who lacks his right extremities. He is the first learner of BSHS with special needs who participated in the latest provincial para games specifically for para swimming events. What Tregal thought would be a wholesome experience went to a disaster when he caught himself struggling to breathe and suddenly stopped swimming midway the long course pool.

Though he is capable of doing that particular event, his life was still put at risk because he was immediately chosen to compete three days before

the said competition without undergoing proper training due to time constraints. Tregal never had the chance to train. His supposed coach failed to provide him with adequate preparation due to their busy schedules and the swimming pool where he practices is far away from school. This is just some of the challenges that para game athletes encounter. This negligence has resulted in unexpected events. The current situation causes negative incidents, requiring urgent action to be taken to address the issue. The institution, specifically in Biliran, needs to exert an effort when it comes to training. Coaches should conduct a time-totime training and check if

the para game athlete is prepared to compete. The Private sectors should also prioritize and show support to athletes like Tregal, who is trying to achieve his dreams of becoming a successful athlete despite the odds.

In his dream of becoming a preeminent athlete in the field of swimming, he didn’t expect to drown so early in his career.

This story of Vience B. Tregal, reminds the unfair treatment that some of the athletes experience and tells us that sending untrained, unprepared athletes to sports meets would be a waste of time and resources that could make the coaches license and dignity at risk.

lieved in me and supported me all the way, and for the Philippines, the country my heart will always beat proud,” she said.

It was in 2023 that Esteban was removed to the national team in the Philippines during the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games that made her go through a crucial decision to shift national federations and pursue her Olympic dream.

Maxine Esteban is

now preparing for the Paris Olympics event that will take place on July 26- August 11, 2024.

South Carolina Gamecocks subjugates Iowa Hawkeyes

South Carolina Gamecocks vanquished Iowa Hawkeyes with an 87-75 score in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship at Rocket Mortgage Field House last Sunday, April 7. South Carolina commenced their game to an offbeat start. Hawkeyes began the game with a 10-0 run helped by prominent player Caitlin Clark. With her 18th basket, she became the all-time leading scorer in an NCAA basketball tournament after

breaking another record with the first deluge.

In the second half, the situation has been reversed. South Carolina held a one-possession lead at halftime through sophomores Raven and Johnson’s steal and score for the final basket of the half.

South Carolina then dominated the final two quarters. Freshman Tessa Johnson led the team with 19 points off the bench. Chloe Kitts takes down a double-double.

Karmilla Cardoso recorded 15 as the team smothered Iowa’s hope for its first-time championship title. And the team that remained as NCAA Women’s Champion

finally completed a perfect and undefeated season.

Once again, a season ends in sorrow for Iowa Hawkeyes, with their Most Valuable Player, Caitlin Clark recording 30 points in the final game.

“I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport,” Staley said. “She carried a heavy load for our sport. And it’s just — it’s not going to stop here on the collegiate tour, but when she is the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, she’s going to lift that league up as well.” Staley then took the chance to shout out, calling Clark one of the GOATs or the greatest of all-time players of their game, showing appreciation to her.

When You’re on the Right Track

Sweats are slowly dripping from the man’s temple as the sun kisses the whole earth. He halts from running and lets out a deep breath. Running isn’t and will never be his forte, but as he looks at the determined faces of his young athletes, he can’t help but laugh at his own situation. In his mind, he silently recites their mantra. “Train hard, win easy.” And so, as the wind from the east gently whistles, a memory of flickers and rigors flashes in front of him.

It was unbeknownst to anyone that his destiny would carry him to the field of tracks. Mr. Noly M. Palconit never imagined himself coaching his athletes in the green oval of Biliran Science High School. Although during his elementary days, he used to compete as a sprinter in their school. But unfortunately, he didn’t pursue it because he thought it wasn’t for him.

iran as part of their preparation. They also experienced running on the sea, feeling the heaviness of each wave in every step they took, making it an alternative to weight equipment. Each day ends with their usual lap at the wide plaza of BSHS. With each pant, each muscle cramp, and the loud thumping of their hearts, these athletes remind themselves of the reason they started and the reason they keep on going.

When he reached high school, he decided to shift from athletics to volleyball. But it didn’t seem to fit in with his enthusiasm, and so he opened his heart to badminton. He participated in the district meet and was qualified for the provincial level. Despite having little background in the sports firmament, he had no clue about coaching at all. Everything for him is his first time. But how did he end up here?

One of the mentors of athletics challenged him to be the coach for Biliran District since it’d be such a loss of face if Biliran didn’t win in spite of having a standard oval. This extraordinary challenge became his motivating force in coaching.

Without anything under his sleeves, he started from scratch. He asked a lot of people in hopes that he would gain something that could help him fulfill this pursuit. He learned from them the basic know-hows in training his athletes. His newly invoked passion led him to a greater sense of purpose.

It was indeed a challenge for him because, compared to other schools, BSHS lacks the equipment needed for their training. To make up for the things they can’t do because of limited resources, they’ve made some substitutes. When dawn starts to break on the horizon, Coach Palconit and his trainees jog the precipice of Bil-

When the first batch of trainees under Coach Palconit hit the jackpot and became medalists, no one could ever explain how he was over the moon. Jazzpeer Lanz Arcenal garnered bronze in the 400-meter dash and 100-meter hurdle in the Palarong Pambansa 2023. Plus, his sprinter from Biliran National Agriculture High School (BNAHS), John Paul Antor, was supposed to compete for EVRAA, but because of the pandemic, the tournament got postponed. Yet this doesn’t stop Antor from achieving his dreams. When he stepped into college, he played again in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) and won a gold medal in the 100-meter dash category. It was exactly because of their incomplete resources that made them break through their own limits and eventually reached their goals of claiming bronzes, silvers, and then golds. Coach Palconit couldn’t be more proud of his trainees because of their immense discipline and determination to help everyone win and enjoy themselves. Under his eyes, his student athletes are not just for competitions but also for companionship.

“The real coach, you should be a working coach,” Coach Palconit stated his advice to aspiring coaches.

In every blood and tear his young athletes shed, he understood the significance of balancing their lives as students and as his trainees. For him, they’re not just meant for running, or sprinting across the oval, or throwing javelins. They’re students as well, who need to keep up with their grades and strive to make good performance in their academics. Truly, he trained his young athletes with support and heartedness as his foundation. If it’s not for his commitment and perseverance, the dominoes of their fortune won’t cascade to their respective lines.
